Chapter 15 – A New Development
We continued to train on the field every morning at seven am. After about two weeks of Devin showing me how to correctly punch, kick, and block; we moved on to simple escape moves from a standing position. Devin was still as intolerable as ever, but the information he has was useful, and I was getting better every day. I was able to get out of a simple wrist grab, and could get someone off me if they grabbed me from behind. Our training became longer, and Devin had actually begun to speak to me humanly, and not as if I was some sort of demon. I still hated him, and he made it clear he was forced to be there, but I actually started to look forward to our time together instead of dreading it.
My body was taking nicely to the intense work outs too. In two weeks, I could feel the muscles start to form in my arms and legs. The little belly fat I had was barely noticeable, and my butt had begun to firm. Even though my entire body was still covered in bruises in different stages of healing, I looked healthier than I ever had. That could be because of Moira too of course. The girl never let me miss a meal, and treated me like a little sister she never had. She showed up like clockwork three times a day, and always had castle gossip even if I didn’t know who she was talking about. I even managed to get Marcus to say a few words to me, even if they were just gruff answers to questions. I did, however, catch how he looked at Moira though. Sometimes she would catch us walking back from training, and I would watch as his face would soften, and his eyes would light up. The ghost of a smile appearing anytime he was in close proximity to her. Though, I think she was clueless about it, and I wasn’t going to be the one to point it out to her.
Of course, I was still locked into my room for most hours of the day, but I did have the immense bookshelf in my room to keep me company when Moira wasn’t around. I had finished five books, and they served as a much-needed distraction when my mind wandered to my father or the monsters that lay beneath the castle.
“Focus faerie.” Prince Devin’s voice snapped out, pulling me from my thoughts. He was crouched low to the ground, ready to jump me. We had just started working on grappling on the ground, and honestly, I wasn’t great at it.
I crouched down low to match him, and he launched himself into me. Sending me flying backwards, and towards the padded blue mat on the ground. I hooked my left leg over the small of his back, and used his weight against him to turn as we fell. Causing him to take the brunt of the force as we hit the mat, dust flying up from the dirty ground. My hips dug into his as I reach for his neck, but he was faster than I was, and quickly lifted his hips and turned. Causing me to tumble to the side and changing our position; Devin now shifting his weight on top of me. His hips pressed into mine, and his hands wrapped gently around my throat. I lifted my arms and tried to pry his fingers from my neck, but it was no use, he had me pinned again. I sighed in defeat, and tapped my hand on the ground, signaling that I gave up.
“Better luck next time faerie.” Devin smirked down at me. I rolled my eyes, why was he so cocky all the time? I made an attempt to sit up, but he held fast against my neck, applying gentle pressure to keep me on the ground. My eyes widened as I looked up at him, his blue and brown eyes were dark as he looked back at me through long lashes. I felt him gently roll his hips farther into mine, causing sparks to shoot up my body at the friction. Heat flooded my face, and my heart rate shot sky high with the strange contact.
“D-Devin.” I sputtered out, and realization brightened his eyes. He quickly released me as if I had burned him, and rolled off me to the side. His chest lifting as he breathed heavily. I sat up on the mat, looking at the ground. There was no way that just happened, this man hates the sight of me.
My face was still burning when Devin lifted himself from the ground, and turned away from me.
“Tomorrow same time.” He snapped at me, and walked away without even looking in my direction. The guards weren’t even here yet to take me back to the room, but he still left through the side gate, closing it behind him.
I sat on the mat still staring at where he had left until the Simon and Marcus came to get me. Running the event through my head over and over, attempting to pick it apart to make any sense of it.
Marcus walked in front me, his large stature blocking out the sun as he looked down to where I sat on the mat with my arms wrapped around my knees. Concern seemed to flash across his face, but was gone as quickly as it came. He held out his hand to help me up, I accepted it, and he pulled me to my feet easily.
“Moira is waiting for you.” He said gruffly, and I nodded, walking back with him to the door to meet Simon who was scowling at us. Disgust evident on his face at Marcus offering some sort of kindness towards me. Marcus ignored him, though, and opened the door to let me through.
Moira was standing outside my room, tapping her foot impatiently on the hard stone floor. Her hands on her hips in the ever brazen way that was Moira.
“Took you long enough,” a smile spread across her face as she looked at me. “Marcus, you can’t just keep me waiting like this.” She laughed, and I looked up to see a small blush forming on Marcus’ neck. He had it bad for her.
“Hey Moira.” I gave her a small smile and her face fell, catching on to my discomfort. She looks at me, and then over to Simon and Marcus. She stepped up to me and grabbed my chin lightly, surveying my face for any new bruises or cuts. When her search came up with nothing, she turned her attention on the two guards.
“What did you two do!?” She demanded, and guards froze. “I swear if one of you laid a hand on her-“ Moira started, and I cut her off.
“They didn’t do anything Moira, I promise, let’s go inside.” I heard Marcus let out a breath, and he walked over to lift the large iron lock on the door. Moira pulled me into the room, and slammed the door behind her, whipped around to point an accusing finger at me.
“Something happened.” She stated frankly, and I couldn’t do anything but nod at her. I could already feel the blush creeping up my body. I sat down on the couch, and took a small sip of water from a glass I had left there the night before. I looked up at Moira who was now pacing in front of the door.
“No one hurt me Moira, come sit down.” I patted the soft cushion beside me. She shook her head and continued pacing.
“It’s bad enough they keep you locked up like a dog Aspen.” She snapped. Her arms were shaking in anger, and my appreciation for her swelled in my chest. Even outside of this prison, I never had a friend protect me so fiercely as she did.
“Moira, something strange happened with the prince today.” I started, and anger blazed through her eyes. I needed to calm her down before she burnt the entire castle to the ground. “He didn’t hurt me Moira, k-kind of the opposite actually.” My face was full on red at this point, and Moira looked at me shocked, realization dawning in her bright eyes.
“Oh, gods. Did he kiss you!?” She asked, hand on her chest feigning shock. I shook my head furiously, hair spiraling around my head. My face was so red at this point, I wouldn’t have been shocked if steam started rising from my skin.
“It was nothing! Well, I think it was nothing.” I recounted to her the short event of the day and she listened intently, eyes wide. A blush almost as red as mine creeping across her cheeks.
“A-and then he just walked away. Leaving by myself in the training field.” I ended the story, and she continued to look at me silently. “Come on Moira! Give me some help here” I pushed her lightly on the shoulder.
“Well, Aspen,” she started “you two have been spending a lot of time together. That could evolve into some sort of, well, sexual feelings.” I groaned at her and hung my head in my hands. That’s all I needed, the prince who hated me also wanting to sleep with me.
“I mean, can you tell me you don’t think about him?” She said with a small smirk on her face. I looked at her incredulously, but took a second to think about it. The prince was handsome, with his tousled blond hair and classical face. His body filled out everything he wore, muscles straining against his t-shirt as he moved around me on the ground. A flash of his darkened eyes filled my mind, and I felt warmth spread up into my belly, causing me to clench my legs together against the sensation. Moira watched me with curious eyes, and a smirk still on her face as I squirmed uncomfortably in the couch.
“I can see it on your face. What’s wrong with having a little fun anyway Aspen? Your stuck rolling around on the ground with him anyway, may as well have some fun while you’re at it.” She winked at me, and I was sure my face couldn’t get any redder.
“I-I can’t Moira.” I looked down at my hands. “I mean, I never have.” I looked back up to see shock obvious across her face.
“Are you trying to tell me that you, curvy, gorgeous, and stunning Aspen. Have never been with anyone before?” She asked, eyes still wide, and I shook my head.
“I was never interested. The boys in my village were always all over me because I was the only girl in town. Plus, I had to help my father with his work, and of course the endless dread of being taken to the castle when I turned eighteen left little time for romance.” I spilled out to her, and she nodded in understanding. I had kissed a boy when I was younger, around sixteen. Jonah, a brown haired, skinny, and crooked teeth boy from school had taken me down to the river to swim. When we were alone, he leaned in while I wasn’t paying attention. It was sloppy, and wet, and I had pushed him off me and ran home. Not exactly the most exciting story in the world.
“Well, Aspen” she said, and evil glint shining in her eyes. “Consider yourself my apprentice, and class starts now.”
Chapter 16 - Moira Moira stayed until late into the night, giggling and talking. It was nice to take a night, and just be a normal teenage girl for once. Through it all I almost started to believe that I was some sort of monster, and not just a normal eighteen-year-old.Moira had attempted to teach me how to flirt, even pretending to be some guy with a fake deep voice and everything, but she eventually conceded when I was too embarrassed to look at her. She had patted me on the head, and told me how cute I was. Making my face flush even more than it had been. When she left in the middle of the night, I was exhausted. Showering quickly before jumping into the comfortable bed, and snuggling myself into the soft covers. Whatever was coming, at least I knew I would have her to depend on.I woke the next morning to the usual knock on the door that signaled fifteen
Chapter 17 - SparksMarcus found me still sitting at the immense dining room table, staring at the full plate of food I hadn’t touched. Luckily, Simon was still not around, and Marcus gave me the time to gather myself before taking me back up to the room. Walking in slow comfortable silence instead of pushing me to hurry along. When we arrived, he lifted the large bolt and pushed the door to the room open for me. I went to step inside, but he stopped me with a hand. I turned to look at him, and he placed a large warm hand on my shoulder and gave it a small squeeze. Marcus didn’t seem to be great with feelings, but I gave him a watery smile at the attempt to comfort me. He stepped aside so I could walk into the large bedroom, and he pulled the door closed behind me. As soon as the lock clicked back into place I sprinted to the bathroom and threw up the contents of my stomach into the toilet. Hugging the cool ceramic as
Chapter 18 - TemperDevin helped me stand to my feet, kicking some of the rubble out of our way, as he helped me walk on shaking legs back through the training doors. I lifted my foot to take the first step, but my leg gave out and I tumbled forward; closing my eyes in preparation to hit my face on the hard stone.Large warm hands wrapped around my waist, and lifted me into the air before I could land, and Devin lifted me into his arms; tucking his arms under my knees as he continued to walk up the stairs as if I weighed nothing. I could feel the heat gathering on my cheeks when I opened my eyes and looked up at him. He was staring straight ahead, his blond hair hanging disheveled into his multi-colored eyes.“I-I can walk myself.” I stuttered out, but he ignored me and continued to carry me up the stairs, passing my room on the way down the hall. “Hey, that one’s mine.” I kicked my legs, weakly struggling
Chapter 19 – HeatI struggled against Devin, attempting to twist and pull my arms from his grasp but it was useless. He held firm with one hand wrapped around both my wrists pinning them above my head, and moved his right leg in between mine, pressed his hips down onto me. He dipped his head down, bringing his lips against my cheek, and causing sparks to scatter down my body.“Stop fighting, and calm down.” He whispered into my ear, his hair brushing against my neck as he used his free hand to reach into his pocket. He pulled the iron bracelet out, and reached up to my trapped wrists, locking it into place around my left arm with a loud snap. I winced as the cool and unforgiving metal grazed the thin skin, leaving its usual trail of burns as it slid down my arm. “Take a deep breath Aspen.” The prince mumbled into my cheek. I inhaled deeply, the smell pine and lavender filling my senses, and making me lightheaded.Even when I hated him
Chapter 20 – ReleaseLight filtered through dark curtains as I squinted through half asleep eyes. I couldn’t remember the last time I slept so well. I sighed as I attempted to snuggle myself deeper into the soft cushions, but was met with a tight resistance wrapped around my waist. My eyes fluttered fully open, and I looked down to see a thick muscled arm wrapped around me. My eyes widened, as the fog cleared from my head, and I recounted the events of the night before. I was in Devin’s’ bed. Not only was I in his bed, but he was wrapped around me, holding me tightly to his chest, and legs locked around mine. I shifted, attempting to pull myself out of his arms, but he groaned and pulled me tighter to him, something hard poking into my hip. I felt my face flush, as warmth again started to spread through my body.“Hold still, it’s still early.” He grunted at me, and I froze, heart beating fast as I felt him a
Chapter 21 - HistoryDevin woke me up in the late afternoon, when the sun was starting to sink into the bright rolling clouds. The sky was turning colors, bright pinks, reds, and purples all melting into the light blue painted a perfect end to the day. Devin needed to meet his father for dinner, and he was going to use the opportunity to ask for a little more freedom for me. The thought of finally being allowed out of the blank walls I had been staring at for weeks had me giddy, even if I had to be escorted everywhere. Devin walked me from his room to mine, and placed a soft kiss on my forehead before shutting the door and locking it behind him. The loud metal loudly grinding into place into the lock, as he left me alone. My body was still sore from the past day’s events, and as I lifted my arms to stretch, I caught a whiff of myself and wrinkled my nose.“Time for a much-needed shower.” I said to myself, and moved towards the small bath
Chapter 22 - Red *Prince Devin’s POV* Warm light shimmered across my body as it filtered through the dark curtains of my windows. I opened my eyes, slowly taking in the soft shadows that danced across the opposite wall. Swirling and changing colors as the sun was starting to sink lower in the sky. It was probably late in the afternoon, and I had uncharacteristically slept the entire day. I sat up in bed, rubbing the sleep from my eyes, and looked at a clock that was ticking on the opposite wall. It was only quarter past six, so I still had a little less than an hour before I had to meet my father for dinner. I sighed, and swung my legs off the soft mattress, stretching my arms above my head before standing. I turned to pull the thick comforter back over the pillows, and a small lump caught my attention on the other side of the bed, black hair spilling out from under the blanket in long obsidian waves across the dark silk sheets. My eyes widened
Chapter 23 - Fear My heart was beating fast as Devin ripped me through the hallways, terror increasing my breathing as we took staircase after staircase down to the lower levels of the castle. He was looking straight ahead of us, the muscles of his biceps flexed tight in anger, as he held my arm in a steel grasp. I didn’t know what had changed in the hour we had been apart, and by the way he was acting, I was afraid to ask. This wasn’t the prince who had held me tightly through the morning; this was a different kind of monster. If it wasn’t for his telltale blue and brown mismatched eyes, I would think it was a completely different person who was dragging me around so carelessly. It was as if he regressed back to the prince I had originally met in the dungeons, a person full of distrust and hate, calling for my head without asking any questions first. I stumbled over my feet after a particularly quick movement around a corner, and almost fell to the gr
Chapter 56“Witches have been gone for over a hundred years Fern.” Terran spoke first, breaking the tension in the silent room. “They were killed in the wars so many years ago.”“How did they obtain their magic Terran?” My mother challenged, “I know you have some history books in this den of yours.” Terran let out an annoyed growl at her, and shook his head like a dog shaking water out of his fur. The action almost funny if it wasn’t for the seriousness of the situation.“They were normal humans that were gifted magic by the moon. From what I understand, there was no rhyme or reason to it, and sometimes it wasn’t even passed through bloodlines if the child was deemed unworthy.” Callum said, cocking his head to the side in thought.“This is nonsense.” I added, looking between the three of them. “I’ve never done a damn witchy thing in my life. What do witches even do anyway, cast curses at people who glare at them?” I waggled my fingers at Callum, and he jumped back as if I was throwing
Chapter 55 I let out a war cry as I lunged for the women standing in the entryway of the Alpha’s office. Throwing my earth magic out in a quick blast around me, I formed deep trenches between everyone else in the room and the devil I set my sites on. No one was going to get in my way. I heard someone yelling my name, but let it skitter through my brain as I closed in on the brunette. Fingers flying out and wrapping tightly around her thin neck, before slamming her against the wall. She was taller than I was, but I pressed into her just the same, forcing her into the plaster hard enough to send pieces scattering in our wake. It was almost surprising that I didn’t push both of us through the wall with the sheer force I hit her with. I tightened my hand in a bruising grip around her soft skin, snarling like a beast close to her face. Sparks were flying around my fingertips, dancing against the milky color of her neck and I held back the urge to fry her completely. “How dare you.” The
Chapter 54 The Alpha called an emergency meeting with all of us, as well as his closest and most trusted wolves. We met in the safe conference room as the day before, and I tried my best not to think about how Simon and I had defiled was seemed like almost every inch of this room. The thoughts still circling my mind even as the Alpha, and his two men pinned us with fierce glares from across the table. “Do they have any weaknesses? Did they give you a timeline to when they would be here? How many are there?” Terran shot in rapid fire at me, and I tried to answer to the best of my ability, but to be honest, I knew little about the Children except for the short time in their cave, and the couple of visits they so graciously paid me. “Iron is a weakness, just like all Faerie.” I started, and thought about the chilling time Moira had just barely saved my life from the herd of them in the cave. “I was able to kill one with my magic, but I had used ev
Chapter 53 I woke wrapped in Simons body, so entwined that I didn’t know where he started and I ended. We had ended our little encounter in the office three orgasms later, and only after Keagan had awkwardly knocked on the door and told us to find a different room. We had ended up in Simon’s room shortly after, where he tucked me tightly into his body, and we both fell asleep in an exhausted and naked heap. His breath was even and warm against the skin of my neck, as he continued to sleep. He had chosen to leave the following week to meet Marcus at the gate with the two wolves of the Gold Moon Pack, and he needed as much peace as he could get before they began tracking down Moira in the absolute pits of hell. My heart squeezed uncomfortably at the thought of him going into danger without me, the thought of losing another person in my life scratching at the back of my mind. If he failed, I not only lost him, but Marcus and Moira as well. Everything about this was absolutely fucked,
Chapter 52 “We cannot send my pack into a vampire den with absolutely no information, or even knowing if your friend is still alive at this point. I understand that she is your family Keagan, but my hands are tied right now. My top priority is protecting this pack from Ben Avon, and that has proven to be much harder than any of us anticipated.” Terran said firmly, but not without sympathy. We had been at the Gold Moon pack for a week now; gathering strength and speaking to the Alpha about our plans for rescuing our sweet Moira from Alaric and his Night Walker clan. It had been a whirlwind of meetings, greeting the pack members, and finding time to curl up in one of the very large beds that Terran had offered to each of us in his personal home. Everything had come to a head when Marcus was able to get past Devin and Ben Avons’ defenses to send word that he had located the den of the vampires, and was going to begin preparations to move that way. Knowing that he would be going alone
Chapter 51 “Aspen.” His voice was rough, husky. The deep tones scraping against my head like a metal rake. Goosebumps chasing the magic that was wrapping and warping itself around my arms; rearing its head in protection against the monster in front of me. My fight or flight kicked in, and I began to struggle furiously against his arms that were holding me tight to his chest. I could hear my name being screamed repeatedly from behind me, but it was a dull noise as I struggled to get away. “Aspen Stop!” Devin’s voice came out in a strangled order, as I slammed my foot into the ground, forcing my magic down my leg and into the ground. Dust flew out from under my foot, and a booming crack sounded from underneath us. Then we were falling. My entire body pitched forward, and Devin’s arms loosening from around my waist. I pushed his chest away from me, putting distance between us before landing to the ground with a hard thump. My shoulder taking the brunt of the impact, as I landed on my
Chapter 50 – The GateWe travelled in a tight group through the darkening woods; Terran’s pack spread out around us in a defensive circle. Most of their wolves choosing to stick with their fur and teeth, rather than walk on two legs next to us. The few of them that had changed stood close to Terran, surveying every move we made as we walked closely behind the Alpha. Terran had paid them no mind though, and had kept Keagan next to him, speaking in quiet hushed whispers, as if their very presence would disturb the forest itself.“The pack village is only about a mile from here. Normally it’s much faster on four legs.” Terran spared us a glance, and small tilt of his lips. “We should be there in about ten minutes.”I nodded back at him, and he turned towards Keagan, keeping on the conversation that was too quiet for my ears to pick up. “Well,” I started, and looked up towards Simon’s face; his sapphire eyes glancing quickly to mine. “We aren’t dead yet.”I had meant it as a joke, but wa
Chapter 49 – Meet the AlphaWe were surrounded before Keagan’s words had sunk in. Six wolves of varying colors, each one larger than the next one, had moved in to block any chance of escaping.“Thanks for the heads-up” Simon said under his breath. He had pushed me behind him in an effort to place himself between me and the wolves, but failing as two wolves moved in behind me.“I tried, but I was racing wolves who have been allowed to run much longer than I have.” Keagan snapped back at Simon, the irritation in his voice obvious at he back into the two of us to tighten our small circle.“Now is not the time you two.” I growled at both of them. The wolves were tightening their circle, teeth snapping and hair raised as they moved on silent paws towards us.A gray wolf with blue eyes moved in almost close enough to touch my arm, its hot breath fanning across my skin, and causing goosebumps to rise on the base flesh. I flinched back away from it, nerves fluttering through my belly, and my
Chapter 48 – Not an ApologyDarkness has come upon us quickly. We had made it to the line of the Gold Moon pack an hour before sundown, and Simon suggested we wait until morning to go an speak with the Alpha. Not wanting to agree with anything he said, I opposed, but Keagan had agreed with him. Thus, leaving me the odd man out in the decision. We walked about a mile back from line, and tucked ourselves under a thick section of pine trees that had long and spindly branches that brushed against the soft ground. It wasn’t a bed or a hot shower, but it provided some semblance of shelter and coverage from anyone who may happen to be hiking through. I had pushed myself as far from Simon as I could go, placing as much space as I could between us in the small area. Curling myself into a small ball against one of the sappy trunks, and covering myself with a sweatshirt that Keagan had pulled from his backpack. We weren’t able to light a fire, as to not attract the unwanted attention, but I co
