(S1) Chapter 4: Silver Wolf

The smell of potent stink took me back to my senses!

I'm lying on the same bed in the garden. But right at this moment, something is different. I dislike the smell of flowers! I cough one after another while itching my nose. My steps spontaneously run towards the outside. I grasp on the fences while relieving my nose and throat with the fresh air.

And when I touched my forehead, I felt the tightness in my nails and found out the reason why. Everything about the incident last night is vivid in my memories. The moon... the sensation underwater... The ghost… I thought it was just a dream. My nails grew longer, sharper. I tested scratching the fence and it left a deep mark, effortless.

My body feels lighter—and that's not a bad thing. I looked at the path beside our farm and found a villager passing by with a wagon. The sound of the wheel, even at least one hundred meters away, is clear to my hearing.

"Weird..." It was the first word I uttered this day but I covered my mouth when I felt something strange with my teeth: fangs. “Wha… Did I become a merman?”

I bit my wrist to wake me up from this odd phenomenon but I ended up hurting myself. My fangs and teeth left a mark on it and bled. However, it's astonishing that I felt not the pain, only an itch. In addition to these odd things, my wound closes for a short period of time. This is above normal and I can't stop my sentiment.

I can hear Cormelio's voice inside the garden, his steps, and his moves. I ran towards the closed door, expecting Cormelio to come out and he did. Right after the door opens, I cuddle him! I even heard him squeal.  "Uncle Cooor! You won't believe what's happening to me!" I said with a euphoric grin, then coughed.

"I know what's going with you, now get off me!" He pushed me on my shoulders. And right away, he wore a long blue coat on me.

"Are you feeling better?"

"Well, yes. Better than better."

He slapped me on my temple! "And what were you up to last night? Did I tell you to swim!? I only asked you for an errand!"

"Yes, I heard you." I thought he was concerned and harmless. That made me giggle.

"The mark! Why do you have that mating mark on your neck!? With whom did you make love last night!?"

I suddenly embrace myself and say, “I did not!” That reminds me of the ghost. The bitemark was carved. “Uncle Cor, do you have any idea about the apparition on the cliff?”

“What brings that up?”

“I was bitten by a ghost underwater! You said you’re aware of what's going on with me. Please tell me.”

I slid my fingers on the hem of the coat and that's when I found out that my nails are back to their usual and decent appearance. The coat has a silver lock where the design is a full moon brooch that is cut in half. The cotton itself is soft like fur rubbed onto my palms. And this includes a hood too.

He sat on the cemented fence of the flowers. "From now on, start wearing that coat to conceal your power."

"Conceal my..." I licked my teeth and found no fangs, my fingers are normal, and the flowers don't itch my nose anymore. I set aside my excitement to heed Cormelio's explanation about this. "Did you know everything all this time?"

His eyes closed and he expelled an amount of air. "... Hessuel. You're not a normal human. You belong to the race of werewolves. Not just that... You are a silver wolf. A living weakness of your kind, and the last one. Yes, I've known you all along. But I hold my tongue with this truth to hide you... to protect you from any werewolves who hunt you."

He said, "These flowers aren't just flowers. I fertilized it with stenches that irritate a werewolf. I'm sophisticated with developing traps and weaknesses for them. And now that your power finally reawakened, it affects you. So, always wear that coat to hide your identity for a while... because once they figured this out, they'll kill you."

"Who're they?"

"The pack is called Vengeance. Don't let them catch you. And if that still happens, don't let them kill you."

"Uncle Cor, I'm an adult now. Scary tales like this won't work to drag me to bed earlier."

"You think this is just storytelling? Do you think the changes in your body are illusions? Do you think I tell you werewolf tales for nothing?"

I swallowed. "No?" I said.

His shoulders fell. "Take this seriously. I will not tell you everything but line upon line only. You have to discover some things on your own, too."

"In terms of what? A growl? Can I do a mighty 'roar' like a beast? Then let's figure it out." I was about to give it a shot when he halted me.

"No— Don't be ridiculous, Little Devil! You're a werewolf, not a dinosaur."

"Actually," I scratch my nape, "I thought that I'm a long-lost prince. Or a son of a god underwater. Either a cursed mage or a noble member of kin, too. Just like how stage plays work. But being a beast is a whole turn of events."

He sighed in frustration. "Then stop feeding your head with such plays. Your story is different. You're not a monster. Don't ever degrade yourself. You are a wolf but something peculiar; your claws, hair, and fangs are silver. I do not know the whole background but—"

I unplugged the moon brooch to remove the coat, hung it on my shoulder, and rushed to his upper room to see myself in the reflection of his study table mirror. My sharp pupils in the eyes are crystalline blue. And when my mouth formed a circle, I saw my fangs that are silver in color but the other teeth are the same.

With my hair, some strands are silver, and I played with my fingers and that twinkled my silver claws. "This... is so attractive~! It feels like I'm walking with free pieces of jewelry!" I look at my reflection and through it, I can scan the slightest details of my skin. So this is how I look without the coat. I'm totally a different person. A perfect strange thing that isn't cogent.

I jumped down from the second floor and asked Cormelio. "Is this..." I cough and rub my nose. "Is this really me? I don't have the natural image of humans now. How can I..." He pulled the coat from my shoulder and put it on me.

"That's why I told you, every now and then, wear this coat to conceal your appearance and the essence of your power while you still have to master everything you've got."

"You will teach me how?" I asked with a grin.

"The little devil is waggling his wolf tail," he mumbled.

Nothing but pure excitement lingers within my chest. Although I have several questions about who I really am. Why am I mundane from the tales of the werewolves? Where did I come from? Who is my family? And why should I be here? What did the Vengeance pack do to them? What is the origin of these? Cormelio said that I might not handle the entire truth about myself which awakens my curiosity even more.

And just like what I'm excited about, my life routine mutated into something exhausting. I trained with Cormelio using the dagger we bought, he taught me every knowledge he has when it comes to combat, and that left me for the rest of the episodes boosted up and frailty. As for the break time, Cormelio lay on the ground.

I let my hands down holding the dagger and stood beside him, concerned about the reason behind this rehearsal. "Uncle Cor, why do you have to train me? Does it mean that I might encounter countless feuds? Are you preparing me for war or something?"

After his rough hum, the answer was spilled, "To defend yourself from potential harm ahead, now that your identity has awakened. I know you have great power. And it's completely worthless without prior knowledge on how to handle those. I have experience of dragging novice knights to deadly training. I can do the same for you."

"That's exciting! When?"

"... Not the answer that I expected." He sighs. “But other than this, I want you to keep in mind one of the most important things you should do as a werewolf.”

“What is it?”

“You need to find your mate.”

I gained two lucky pockets for today's merchandise. The weight of it pulls my belt down, leaving me no choice but to tie it to the handle of the handcart instead. I was on my way home, filled with excitement and lines in my head on how to brag about my fruit of hard work today! But on my way, walking roadblocks discontinued my pace.

"That's him. That's the slave the old man feeds." The scoffers are on the field of my whereabouts again. But this time, they have a giant commissary. His baleful stare down on me is terrifying. I'm still glad that Cormelio isn't around to spar with him. The scoffers are standing behind, some of them are bruised from the last battering.

Two of them locked my arms with theirs. "You’re gonna be dead for good. Let's see what that old man realizes."

Cormelio never has to realize something from these guys. It's them. It feels like my head was shaken when that fist from the giant guy blew on my nose! The two men locking my arms were thrown into the handcart with me. The rest of the guys murmured praises for the tall man. The two left my side while I'm cringing my nose and lying on the handcart. The man stood with his legs both on my sides and showered me with more punches. I made sure that my training with Cormelio is useful. My arms cover my head from the intense and heavy punches that shake my head, bump on the wood, and nothing but brute beating. Every hit depicts hostility to avenge an accomplice. And I believe that's acceptable. It's my right to avenge myself then. The tall man ceased and was startled after having sight of me. His fists are swelling and shuddering, the unfathomable reaction on his face is adorable. Without a glimpse of hesitation, my uppercut attack met his chin. He was pushed backward, rolled, and fell fro

"He suffered from blood loss," the nurse lady informed after the aid. Cormelio's wounds are wrapped with bandages, deep cuts have cotton wool for the prevention of bleeding. Just the sight of how pale he is makes my legs shudder. I almost lost him. His life is still in danger. I remember every word he told me earlier. And I don't think I can live on my own. My knowledge is still out of the league. "We need to fill him with blood again," the nurse indicated, "or else, his heart will suffer and die." I extended my right arm. "I'm—" ["You can't."] I halted when I heard the resonating voice again. This time, I look at Acro who's perching on top of the pendulum in this dark room. And her eyes are directly looking at me. Then some thought came into my mind. I can't donate my blood to a human for I am a werewolf. That doesn't prove the logic without experimentation but I prefer not to involve Cormelio with such. I reason out, "I'm not allowed to be his donor. I wasn't capable of selli

I don't have the coat with me! That's not really surprising for my power is unleashed and lively. But I have to retrieve it. The only problem ahead is its whereabouts. And I can't show myself like this in the crowd. When returning slides into my thoughts, I knew somehow that it was absolutely late. Good thing, I saw the archer on a window of the tower fired at me and I was able to dodge. The arrow pierced onto the roof and I lost balance when I lifted a leg; I stumbled, rolled down the roof, and fell into a pile of laundry. A lady on the ground squeals when I ruin her space and cause a clutter. Her hands are on her chest while the wet bed sheet is within her clenches. "I'm sorry—!" She shrieks even more after landing sight on me. I'm supposed to ask her for the exit but her mouth isn't in good condition to spill assistance. I run away into these narrow and congested pathways outside the houses as fast as a silver wolf can—seven steps in a click of a clock. Someone wearing a hood

And it didn’t come when she needed it the most, she never should have suffered harassment from those vile knights.” “How did you know?” “I had those contusions before.” "Oh, right… I’m sorry. You have no stigma of mistreating dark-skinned people, do you? I deemed that you can help me save my enslaved niece." "Me? But what can I do?" "You have the power to defeat Mraz. You do it and I'll stop his nefarious laws." Her arms fold in accordance with her grimace expression. "Several months ago, people in my town went missing and most of them are from dark-skinned families, including my niece. He's mocking me, it's my thoughts on the matter. But I find it reasonable. I already knew the sore brutality of silver wolves like me. "Then... you shall do the same to me? Sir, I have another reason why I need to meet you." "Freedom for the slaves? Yes. The knights informed me about your petition. But would you mind guessing why we enforce this law?" He leaned his arms on the bars with an overweening stance. "It's because of you. We know you're hiding under that color. And all we've been doing is to pull the rat out of its hiding. "I know how to tame dogs," she boasts. She lifts her right hand up and above her skin is a huge orb of light spinning in the air. We all looked at it as the light imitated the glow and image of the moon. As always and have been, the beauty of it is mesmerizing, stunning… soothing… But my fascination ended harshly when I was slapped on the face. "You're awake now?" Dandeline asked. I blinked rapidly at her. “Aw,” I said, and when I looked at the werewolves, all of them were flabbergasted and spacing out on the sight of the moon Dandeline made. "Oh, so, it's your way of taming? Hypnotizing?" I pointed a finger at the moon. "Let's hurry!" She pulled me on my coat again to run away while the werewolves were deluded. “Wait! I want to try to slap them if it’ll work the same as mine—.” “It will!” We're running down another spiral stair, the space is slim and dark but the noon light through the window spares the burden. The very first noise I heard in this darkness is the wailing supplication of a woman. It pricked my heart. I'm looking around to find her but all I can see is darkness. No. I wince my eyes. This is just an illusion fabricated by Mraz. I never knew he had this kind of ability. He must be taking advantage of my real shell. Maybe it takes a strong mind to break free— ["Why me? WHY DOES IT HAVE TO BE ME!?"] Fear struck me when I heard the voice of the raging man. He isn't around. The only thing or apparition I saw is a man above me, smiling. Yet his eyes tell the opposite. ["My carefree pup... I will make sure he'll regret this throughout his immortality..."] said the man of the vision. I kept hearing the voices. My emotions are overwhelming; fear, sadness, and longing. These voices and visions are all intimate to me. Confusion is overflowing. Curiosity is killing me. I cross the stony river and innumerable trees. I stopped in front of a giant tree when Acro flew on top of it. I make steps backward while looking at where Acro is perched. When the distance is enough for a spurt, I dash upward on the tree defying the gravity. However, Acro's spot is too high. I almost fell down again but I managed to cling to a robust branch and hop from there. I step on another robust branch to draw closer to Acro. I never knew there was an owl nest here. And it's wide enough for me to fit in. I squinted inside and inside I saw a mini box. I sat on the branch, leaving my legs hanging, and I blew the dust from the box which means it had already taken years in this hidden nest. It's a good thing no one found it first. If you’re here because you’ve finished reading the book, you have my deepest gratitude. To anyone who gave their best to read this book, in any legal way (or not through a 3rd party beneficiary), I salute you. Will there be a book 2? -None. Please? -No. This is the end of Hessuel & Dandeline’s story. Seriously, I just tried a werewolf genre and finally proved to myself that this isn’t my cup of tea. We Asians prefer vampires. *chortles* Will the twins have their own book? -No. They will stay kids in your imagination. Will Hrista & Andrew have their own book?-Yes. Their book is part of the contemporary romantasy series I’m building. Which means this book is a side story of that series. It wasn’t the plan at first, this was planned to be a stand alone book, but midway I fell in love with the characters of this book & decided to connect them to the universe of this beloved series. I have big dreams for this series & I want this book to be part of it. Meaning, some of the scene

I'm too tired throughout the preparation and the whole day of the great day! Dandeline is taking her time in the bathroom and I nap while I wait. But, my waiting took longer than her time inside the bathroom, the squint of sun rays was coming inside the room already! I fell asleep facing her, she fell asleep facing me. I stare at her face for a while, then reach for her nape and hair. She woke up with my touch."Hey…""Why didn't you wake me up last night?" I still woke up late when I am supposed to be the one waking up early! A folded bathrobe is prepared underneath my feet. He turns his face to me before looking with his eyes. "I have an errand~"I skip steps and help him fix himself, but then he requests me to hold the bouquet while he fixes his shoes. He seems lively, probably because that's what it feels when money is expected on the way."Where are the twins?""Back to school.""Ugh, sorry, I woke up late."

The day finally came when I sealed the spellbook that contains the power of the moon in front of the pulpit of another mage school. My strength is even lesser now, but it doesn't bother me if this is equivalent to an increase in time with my boys."Is this your final decision?""Yes.""From now on," an enchanter declares, "you are a retired moon priestess. Your name shall remain eminent throughout the mages' history. You have done a good, and quite risky job. Hence, we are grateful for your services." He made me sign the declaration which all the witnesses in this chamber have signed as well.Shortly, I left the solemn room and met Lanasia waiting outside. At first, she taps my toga, and then she hugs me tight. "I'm gonna miss you on duty! You have no idea ho

Afvshaganifs is imprisoned in the main forest castle in an empty room guarded with tough magic. The door is only a messy sketch on the wall and only my power can make it work. I expect to be surprised since it's the captain who's inside. But not at this level— "What the..." Supposedly, the room should be completely empty but she provided a royal chair, a gallant coat dress paired with a big hat, and eye shades for her own while sipping a luxurious wine in front of her levitating spellbooks! "Great. You look more like a lady now. Do you have to dress like that in prison?" "What, would you rather see a hot captain than a glamorous queen?" she replied with the flickering of her painted nails. Her dead personality somewhat mismatches the fashion. The confidence blinds me! "I just hope this has nothing to do with Tanya's influence. Anyway," in front of her, I flipped my skirt first and then sat in the air as if there was a visible couch, "I came here for confirmation after I prosecu
