Sully

When we entered the dining hall, almost all the chairs were occupied.

Damien nodded at the man who sat at the head of the long table.

I raised my eyes and saw the Head of Silverclaw family. He was a man with domineering presence. His head was held high as he watched me head to toe. He had dark black hair like Damien and silver eyes. He was just an older version of Damien. He was most probably in his early forties. How old was Damien? I had no idea. I should ask him after the meal was over.

On his right was a smiling short woman. She had dark hair, a mix between brown and black, and freckles all over her face. The woman beside her gave me a small smile. She had hair as white as snow. Her eyes were golden like fire. She seemed timid. There was another woman on the Head’s left-hand side. She had only one eye. The other eyelid was sewn shut. So were her lips. I shuddered and gulped down the scream that almost left my mouth.

Damien placed a hand on the small of my back and led me to three empty chairs beside the white-haired woman. He kept the chair next to her empty and took the other chair. He helped me sit down beside him. I could barely see other people in the room. There were many children, all aged between ten years old and early twenties. The Head had three wives and had a lot of children.

“How was your wedding night?” the dark-haired woman asked.

I could not even blush since I was scared of that woman with sewn eyelid and lips.

“It was satisfactory,” Demian said.

“It might as well be. You took my pet from me!” a girl yelled. She had red hair like the scary woman and red eyes.

“Now, now, don’t be sad, sweetheart,” the dark-haired woman said. “Your father will give you another pet. This one belongs to Damien now.”

I felt disgusted. They were talking about me like I was a pet, not a human being.

The door of the dining hall opened and a young woman walked in. She was probably the same age as Damien. She had white hair and silver eyes. She wore a white dress the same color as her skin and bright red lip paint. She was beautiful, like a goddess. Her name was Rose. I had seen her before.

“Am I late?” she murmured as she took the empty seat between Demian and the white-haired woman. That must be Rose’s mother. They looked very much alike. However, Rose did not have any of her mother’s timidness. In fact, her attitude and gestures were more like her father’s.

Breakfast was served. I could barely eat anything even though I ate almost nothing yesterday. The maids forced me to eat soup before the wedding night. Other than that, I ate nothing the whole day. According to my family’s tradition, brides must remain hungry before her marriage. Only after the wedding could she eat.

“She has beautiful body,” the dark-haired woman said. That should be Damien’s mother. If not, then that woman with sewn eyelids and lips would be his mother. “Did you see her breasts? Huge. You must like them, Damien.”

Damien did not say anything.

The woman winked at me. “My son did not like any of the women I sent him. He would always send them back. He must truly like you since he wanted you for himself right after seeing you.”

“I wonder how your ex-fiancé would react. He must have gotten the news,” the Head said. It was the first time I heard him talking. He had a deeper voice than Damien. “What do you think, Sully Silverclaw? How will he react?”

“He will be angry,” I murmured.

“Ah, yes. He will be angry,” he said and threw his head back and laughed. “Very angry, indeed. Very angry.”

My mother was the second wife of my father. Right after I was born, Rose was born. We had different mothers. Our mothers were far from different. They had exactly opposite personalities. Still, my mother liked Rose’s mother Rosalia and spent time with her. Rose and I were not close. We still were not that close. But we were stuck together since childhood. Sully must know about Rosalia. I had seen her watching Rosalia. Rosalia was from the Star family, after all. She was Rose’s aunt, her father’s sister. My father kidnapped Rosalia and married her, the same way I married Sully. A war almost broke out decades ago when it happened. In the end, the two families came to a negotiation. Sully never met Rosalia before. She probably just heard about her. Sully was born a year after Rosalia was kidnapped. She was two years younger than me. Seeing Rosalia here must have been something new for her. Sully was also looking at Melissa a lot. She must be intimidated by Melissa’s appearance.

I splashed cold water on my face. It did not look so puffy anymore. Demian left because he had work to do. I was left alone. I told him not to let any maids in.I cried for a long time. I had held it in as long as I could. But not anymore.Seeing Rosalia there, stuck for years with such a horrendous man, made me feel hopeless. Would that be my fate as well? Or, would my fate be like Clarissa with her sewn eyelids and lips?If Demian’s father was capable of doing something like that, so was Demian. Besides, Demian did all the dirty work for his father. That was the reason he never went to the banquets. Because he was always busy getting rid of people.Even now that he left, he probably went to kill someone or stalk someone.Rosalia, the beautiful younger sister of my father, kidnapped at age eighteen by Alexander Silverclaw just because she was beautiful and he liked her looks. “Tell me about you, sweetheart.”I glanced at Dela once more. She was smiling. Her manners were gentle. She called me ‘sweetheart’ and did not act rudely with me. Instead, the moment I came here with my maids, she embraced me in her arms and kissed my cheek. Then we sat down and had tea when she asked about myself.“There is nothing interesting about me, Your Grace,” I answered.“No, no, I am certain there is. Rosalia is so interesting. A charming lady. You are from House Star too. I am certain you are also a very admiring lady with interesting stories,” she said. “Go on. Tell me about your childhood. And do not call me Your Grace. That makes us sound so distant when we are not. Just call me ‘Mother’, won’t you?” She smiled again.I nodded. “Yes, Mother.”There was truly nothing to tell her. She probably knew everything about me by now through an informer.“I am the second oldest daughter and the third child of my parents. I have two brothers, two sisters and a half-sister. My elder si

Dela smiled a lot. I should not be afraid of her. But I was. For some reason, her attitude disturbed me. It felt like there was something more to her that I could not see, but sense. My subconsciousness picked up on something that my eyes could not see. After having tea, Dela offered to take me on a tour around the estate. I agreed. I would not dare disagreeing with her if I could.“You are pretty, Sully. Are your sisters pretty too?” Dela asked as she showed me the garden first. We had been having tea in the greenhouse which was in the garden.“Prettier than me,” I said.My mother called Millie ugly. She said Millie’s hair was disgusting looking with a very odd color.Millie had bright red hair like her mother’s and freckles all over her body. She was very beautiful. Even as a child, I could see that. She looked like her mother. I woke up in Demian’s (our) bed chamber. Demian was smoking a cigar by the window.“How are you feeling?” he asked.“She is not going to kill me, is she?” I was terrified.“If she wanted to kill you, she would have.”“She… She killed a maid. Decapacitated her… I saw it… Just because she stepped on my train…” Tears started to run down my face. I was shaking. “I…”“Have you truly never seen anything like this before?” Demian asked. He was not concerned at all.I shook my head. “Why would I?”“Why would you? That’s a nice question, darling.” He put out the cigar and walked over to the bed. He sat down beside me and cupped my face. “But that’s not how it works here. You make a mistake, you die. That’s how it works here. It’s better if you get used to it quickly.”“I can’t…”“I was notified when I came back a while ago. One of Mother’s guards carried you here and the maids bathed you. Mother thinks it’s unfortunate what happened and would like to continue the tour when you feel better,” D

I sat on the windowsill, smoking the third cigar of the day. Occasionally, I would turn to watch Sully sleep peacefully on the bed. At first, she was pretending to be asleep, probably to see what I would do. But then, she fell asleep after a while. That woman amused me. I had not been so amused in a long while.I was thirsty. My thirst was never this much before. After all, I was not a full-vampire. The original Silverclaws were vampires. Then the Silverclaws married a human and created half-vampires. To protect the bloodline, sometimes there was incest in the family. My father was an original vampire. But he never married his sister. In fact, he was disgusted at the prospect. That was why there were no more original vampire other than Father. I and all my siblings were half-vampires. We did not need blood on a regular basis. Once in seven days was fine. But something about Sully’s blood made me crave more. Or perhaps it was because I was attracted to her. It was not my fault. She was

I would not feel safe no matter what, unless Demian was with me. I must admit that he made me feel at least a little safer than alone. He liked playing with me. He might even want me for my body. But that was fine. It would help me survive this hell house.I threw up once right after waking up. What happened the previous day kept on playing in my mind. I felt sick every time I remembered the separated head. I could feel the maid staring at me with her big brown eyes.At breakfast, everyone had their particular place at the table. My place was beside Demian as his wife. On my other side was a crippled boy around sixteen. He did not look at anyone. He kept his head down and ate.“I heard you were sick yesterday,” Alexander, the Head said. “You couldn’t join us for dinner.”“My apologies,” I murmured. I kept my head down as I apologized. “I felt under the weather.”“It shouldn’t happen again. After all, we cannot let you go hungry the whole night, can we?” He said it with a threatening t

My plan for today was simple. I was to check the surrounding by joining Dela for a tour around the estate. No matter how afraid I was, I had to do it. I needed to know where what was.I sent a letter to Dela by a maid. I got a reply soon enough. Dela said we would meet in the afternoon and she would show me everything. At lunch, once again, I sat beside Theodore. On my left, there was an empty chair between me and Rosalia since Demian was not here. I felt awfully alone without him.I was not asked as many questions as before which was a relief. After lunch, I went back to our bed chamber and lay down on the bed. I was used to being alone. Back at home, I spent most of my time holed up in my chamber with books. However, everything was so foreign that I craved company who was familiar with the rules, regulations and every nook and corner here. I wanted someone to tell me what to do, how to be safe. Demian did that. He might not want to kill me so soon, so I wanted to believe him for t

The ship reached our kingdom once again. Demian and I got down the ship with our belongings, which were not too many things.First of all, we went to an inn to eat something. I was hungry. Even though the ship was luxurious, the food had not been that good. Besides, I could barely eat anything with the constant movement of the ship.We took our horses and gave them to the son of the innkeeper who would feed the horses and brush them.We were served a beef stew with quite a lot of beef in it and bread to soak it up with. The bread was not stale, fortunately. Demian and I ate slowly, enjoying each bite. After we were done eating, Demian paid the innkeeper while I waited outside.Someone touched my shoulder and I almost screamed.“Selina!” Without thinking, I wrapped my arms around my sister, hugging her tightly. It had been so long since I had last seen her.She was wearing the usual priestess’s attire like she always did since the moment she began devoting her life to God. When we pull

All day long, Mother sat on her balcony and watched ships come and go. I sometimes urged her to take a walk with me in the garden, or down the streets, but she never took me up on my offers. She would smile and say that she was fine where she was.I brought a doctor to take a look at her. The doctor said that Mother should not remain idle all the time. It was making her body weak. She needed to walk at least for an hour each day.Mother did not listen to the doctor, or to me, or to anyone.Jace and I arrived two days ago. These two days, all she did was sit by the window and watch the ships like a little child who was fascinated by it.“My daughter will return in one of those ships,” Mother would say to everyone who went near her.“Sully is not here, Mother. She will not come back,” Jace said many times. We believed that Sully had settled her life somewhere far away and in a quiet place and was never going to come back. It was better that way as long as she was happy wherever she was.

Hearing about Sully’s condition and what Father did to her made me disgusted. At that moment, I hated Father more than I ever hated anyone before. And I pitied my sister. I was worried about her.I knew that Father would be angry about Sully’s lost maidenhood. But I never thought he would take it that far. I never could imagine that he could hurt his own daughter like that.‘You knew he hurt Millie. But you never did anything. You knew about it all. You saw how he slapped her, hit her with a cane and sometimes whipped her. You saw it all, but you acted like a blind man. You acted like you did not see anything. You pretended like you did not know anything just to avoid any kind of confrontation or responsibility,’ a voice inside my head said. But then again, Millie was an illegitimate daughter unlike Sully.‘There is no difference. You know it very well.’I tried to shake the voice out of my head.“Do you think she truly went to another kingdom like Father thinks she did?” Selina asked

This ship was better than the one I took with Leo and Rose before. This one looked much luxurious. The cabin we got was quite big. The bed was meant for two and the sheet and covers were clean.Demian talked to the captain while I looked around our cabin. At least, I did not have to worry about catching skin diseases here, sleeping under the covers.I was truly going back with Demian. There was no turning back now. I had chosen this.Sometimes I wondered what would have happened if I did not want to go back with Demian. Would he have forced me to come with him?I did not know. I did not want to know the answer, lest it should make feel bad. Besides, I knew what kind of person Demian was. He might be better than Alexander, but in the end, they were similar in many ways. I could not expect him to change himself, not after the way he had to grow up. He had to kill his own twin brother. That kind of thing was bound to mess up someone’s conscience. It was a surprise that Demian had not tur

It was raining a bit. Demian brought us two horses which would take us to the port. We were to take a ship back to our kingdom. It would take a long time, but that was okay. The two horses were huge and black. They were not just like big horses. They were monstrous in size and look.“Where did you get them?” I asked.“They look like you brought them from hell,” Lloid said, who was a moderately religious person.“This one is mine,” Demian said, patting the one which was bigger than the other. “I brought him with me.”“On a ship?” I asked.“He did not like it, but that was the only way. I like this horse,” Demian said. Only Demian would bring a horse all the way from another kingdom.“What’s his name?” I asked.“Thunder,” Demian answered.“That’s majestic. He looks majestic,” I murmured. Indeed, Thunder looked like a horse that carried a conqueror on her back.Demian and I started our journey in the afternoon. We did not want anyone to see us, so we waited until it got dark. The port wa

Demian and I would leave in three days.Demian was painting something. He had painted a lot in the past few days. He had once painted bruises on my skin which looked oddly real. I still could not forget standing in front of the mirror with those fake bruises all over my body. But now, my father gave me some real bruises.I shook my head. I had promised not to think about that. Most of the time, I pretended like everything was fine and that I was not in mental and physical pain most of the time. However, it never was possible to forget. I kept remembering and reliving that day all over again.I hated the kind of effect my father’s action had on me. I could not stop thinking about it. Mother sat at the bench with her hands clasped together on her lap. Her eyes were closed and her brows knitted together, as if in pain. Someone might think that she was asleep and was having a nightmare.I touched her on the shoulder. “Mother?” I called. She opened her eyes, those red ruby eyes that she passed on to Sully and me. When I was a child, I read in a children’s book that demons had red eyes. Since then, I had been afraid to look into the mirror. I cried about it and asked my nanny if I was a demon, who said that children’s book sometimes lied to make children afraid.I did not believe her. I went to Mother and asked her about it, who said that it was better to be a demon than a god who did not listen to the prayers of the devoted ones. It seemed like she had been angry at God to say something like that.Later, Sully told me that it was because she was angry at Father because Father kept betraying his vows that he took during their wedding.“You look pale, Mother,” I said. “

“I have to tell you something.” I automatically expected the worse when Sully said this the moment I woke up and walked into the kitchen. She had cooked beef porridge and prepared orange juice. I had to admit that she had gotten very good at cooking a few dishes.I rubbed my eyes. I still was sleepy. I could not understand why I suddenly was so sleepy. I had not been like this in a long time.Lloid was still sleeping. I poked his back a few times with my finger but he did not even move. It was like he was dead, so I checked his pulse. He was alive. Just asleep.I turned my attention back to Sully, who looked like she did something she was ashamed of. It was not like Sully. She usually was never ashamed of anything she did. She rarely felt guilty about something. She always said that she never regretted a single decision she made.“Is something wrong?” I asked. My head felt numb. It was like I could not think straight. For this reason, I never took sleeping potion no matter how hard it

I opened the door of my room and tiptoed to Leo and Lloid’s room. I knocked once, but nothing. Both Lloid and Leo woke up at the slightest noise. I could wake up at the slightest noise as well, but since my body was weak, I could not do so anymore. I slept deeply. Otherwise, how did I not hear when Demian came in?“They will not wake up,” Demian whispered into my ear. I almost jumped.I was a little sore between the legs, so walking straight was difficult. It was not like Demian had been rough like he was all the time. In fact, he had been gentle and passionate. Yet, I was in a little pain. I did not tell Demian that since I had been the one who insisted on doing it.“Did you hurt them?” I asked.“Of course not. You care about them,” he said. “They are just sleeping. I injected them with sleeping potion. They will be fine in the morning.”“How?”“I could not get through the window without waking anyone since you locked all of them. So, I decided to get through the front door. I knocke
