When we entered the dining hall, almost all the chairs were occupied.

Damien nodded at the man who sat at the head of the long table.

I raised my eyes and saw the Head of Silverclaw family. He was a man with domineering presence. His head was held high as he watched me head to toe. He had dark black hair like Damien and silver eyes. He was just an older version of Damien. He was most probably in his early forties. How old was Damien? I had no idea. I should ask him after the meal was over.

On his right was a smiling short woman. She had dark hair, a mix between brown and black, and freckles all over her face. The woman beside her gave me a small smile. She had hair as white as snow. Her eyes were golden like fire. She seemed timid. There was another woman on the Head’s left-hand side. She had only one eyes. The other eyelid was sewn shut. So were her lips. I shuddered and gulped down the scream that almost left my mouth.

Damien placed a hand on the small of my back and led me to three empty chairs beside the white-haired woman. He kept the chair next to her empty and took the other chair. He helped me sit down beside him. I could barely see other people in the room. There were many children, all aged between early twenties to ten years old. The Head had three wives and had a lot of children.

“How was your wedding night?” the dark-haired woman asked.

I could not even blush since I was scared of that woman with sewn eyelids and lips.

“It was satisfactory,” Demian said.

“It might as well be. You took my pet from me!” a girl yelled. She had red hair like the scary woman and red eyes.

“Now, now, don’t be sad, sweetheart,” the dark-haired woman said. “Your father will give you another pet. This one belongs to Damien now.”

I felt disgusted. They were talking about me like I was a pet, not a human being.

The door of the dining hall opened and a young woman walked in. She was probably the same age as Damien. She had white hair and silver eyes. She wore a white dress the same color as her skin and bright red lip paint. She was beautiful, like a goddess. Her name was Rose. I had seen her before.

“Am I late?” she murmured as she took the empty seat between Demian and the white-haired woman. That must be Rose’s mother. They looked very much alike. However, Rose did not have any of her mother’s timidness. In fact, her attitude and gestures were more like her father’s.

Breakfast was served. I could barely eat anything even though I ate almost nothing yesterday. The maids forced me to eat soup before the wedding night. Other than that, I ate nothing the whole day. According to my family’s tradition, brides must remain hungry before her marriage. Only after the wedding could she eat.

“She has beautiful body,” the dark-haired woman said. That should be Damien’s mother. If not, then that woman with sewn eyelids and lips would be his mother. “Did you see her breasts? Huge. You must like them, Damien.”

Damien did not say anything.

The woman winked at me. “My son did not like any of the women I sent him. He would always send them back. He must truly like you since he wanted you for himself right after seeing you.”

“I wonder how your ex-fiancé would react. He must have gotten the news,” the Head said. It was the first time I heard him talking. He had a deeper voice than Damien. “What do you think, Sully Silverclaw? How will he react?”

“He will be angry,” I murmured.

“Ah, yes. He will be angry,” he said and threw his head back and laughed. “Very angry, indeed. Very angry.”

“Tell me about you, sweetheart.”I glanced at Dela once more. She was smiling. Her manners were gentle. She called me ‘sweetheart’ and did not act rudely with me. Instead, the moment I came here with my maids, she embraced me in her arms and kissed my cheek. Then we sat down and had tea when she asked about myself.“There is nothing interesting about me, Your Grace,” I answered.“No, no, I am certain there is. Rosalia is so interesting. A charming lady. You are from House Star too. I am certain you are also a very admiring lady with interesting stories,” she said. “Go on. Tell me about your childhood. And do not call me Your Grace. That makes us sound so distant when we are not. Just call me ‘Mother’, won’t you?” She smiled again.I nodded. “Yes, Mother.”There was truly nothing to tell her. She probably knew everything about me by now through an informer.“I am the second oldest daughter and the third child of my parents. I have two brothers, two sisters and a half-sister. My elder si

Dela smiled a lot. I should not be afraid of her. But I was. For some reason, her attitude disturbed me. It felt like there was something more to her that I could not see, but sense. My subconsciousness picked up on something that my eyes could not see. After having tea, Dela offered to take me on a tour around the estate. I agreed. I would not dare disagreeing with her if I could.“You are pretty, Sully. Are your sisters pretty too?” Dela asked as she showed me the garden first. We had been having tea in the greenhouse which was in the garden.“Prettier than me,” I said.My mother called Millie ugly. She said Millie’s hair was disgusting looking with a very odd color.Millie had bright red hair like her mother’s and freckles all over her body. She was very beautiful. I woke up in Demian’s (our) bed chamber. Demian was smoking a cigar by the window.“How are you feeling?” he asked.“She is not going to kill me, is she?” I was terrified.“If she wanted to kill you, she would have.”“She… She killed a maid. Decapacitated her… I saw it… Just because she stepped on my train…” Tears started to run down my face. I was shaking. “I…”“Have you truly never seen anything like this before?” Demian asked. He was not concerned at all.I shook my head. “Why would I?”“Why would you? That’s a nice question, darling.” He put out the cigar and walked over to the bed. He sat down beside me and cupped my face. “But that’s not how it works here. You make a mistake, you die. That’s how it works here. It’s better if you get used to it quickly.”“I can’t…”“I was notified when I came back a while ago. One of Mother’s guards carried you here and the maids bathed you. Mother thinks it’s unfortunate what happened and would like to continue the tour when you feel better,” D

I sat on the windowsill, smoking the third cigar of the day. Occasionally, I would turn to watch Sully sleep peacefully on the bed. At first, she was pretending to be asleep, probably to see what I would do. But then, she fell asleep after a while. That woman amused me. I had not been so amused in a long while.I was thirsty. My thirst was never this much before. After all, I was not a full-vampire. The original Silverclaws were vampires. Then the Silverclaws married a human and created half-vampires. To protect the bloodline, sometimes there was incest in the family. My father was an original vampire. But he never married his sister. In fact, he was disgusted at the prospect. That was why there were no more original vampire other than Father. I and all my siblings were half-vampires. We did not need blood on a regular basis. Once in seven days was fine. But something about Sully’s blood made me crave more. Or perhaps it was because I was attracted to her. It was not my fault. She was

But that was fine. It would help me survive this hell house.I threw up once right after waking up. What happened the previous day kept on playing in my mind. I felt sick every time I remembered the separated head. I could feel the maid staring at me with her big brown eyes.At breakfast, everyone had their particular place at the table. My place was beside Demian as his wife. On my other side was a crippled boy around sixteen. He did not look at anyone. He kept his head down and ate.“I heard you were sick yesterday,” Alexander, the Head said. “You couldn’t join us for dinner.”“My apologies,” I murmured. I kept my head down as I apologized. “I felt under the weather.”“It shouldn’t happen again. After all, we cannot let you go hungry the whole night, can we?” He said it with a threatening t

I needed to know where what was.I sent a letter to Dela by a maid. I got a reply soon enough. Dela said we would meet in the afternoon and she would show me everything. At lunch, once again, I sat beside Theodore. On my left, there was an empty chair between me and Rosalia since Demian was not here. I felt awfully alone without him.I was not asked as many questions as before which was a relief. After lunch, I went back to our bed chamber and lay down on the bed. I was used to being alone. Back at home, I spent most of my time holed up in my chamber with books. However, everything was so foreign that I craved company who was familiar with the rules, regulations and every nook and corner here. I wanted someone to tell me what to do, how to be safe. Demian had been watching me in an odd way. He usually looked at me a lot. But now, he was blatantly staring at me regardless of the place we were in.“Who do you think it is?” I asked, not for the first time. “Is it Luke? But I don’t understand why he would do that. He might want to… you know, he might be attracted to my body, but I don’t see the point of his sending someone to kill me.”“I don’t know anything, Sully. I’m looking into it,” Demian said. He said the same thing every time I asked. It was getting tiresome. He was acting differently. I could barely recognize my husband.“What’s wrong?” I asked, placing my hand on his arm. His arm was strong and hard. “Did something happen?”He shook his head. “Nothing. I just have a lot of things on my mind.”I could not ask him what they were since he looked like he did not want to share.I lay my head on his lap. His whole body was like it was made with steel. It was not comfortable to lay on his lap, but I was in peace when I did it.“T

I stared at the window, at the man coming inside my chamber. I lay still, watching him. He was not so tall, but not short either. He was wearing a cloak, perhaps dark green or red. I could not tell in the dark. But I could see the outline of him as he came near the bed towards me.My heart was calm. It was not thundering inside my ribcage like it did when I was anxious. The man bent over my body. I felt his musky breath on my face. I felt his fingers wrap around my throat. It grew tighter with each moment.I raised my hand from my side and stabbed the man in the neck with a dagger. It all happened very fast. He let out a small groan, clutching the side of his neck where I stabbed him. I pulled the dagger out and let him bleed out.It was amusing watching him bleed out on the ground. The days were spent with me going to the library with Theodore, having tea with Rose and sometimes with Dela and Rosalia and then seeing my brother Jace in the dungeon every few days. Rose took me down there and showed me a cell that Alexander wanted to give to me.Jace was okay. Rose did not hurt him. But living in the dungeon was taking a toll on him. I could see it in his face. He did not look as lively and alive as before.“I’m fine. Just take care of yourself,” Jace would say every time I cried about his condition.“Demian treats me alright. I don’t have to live in a dungeon like you, Jace. I’m worried you will catch some sickness living in the filth. Rose, can’t you tell your father to move him elsewhere?” I looked up at Rose expectedly.Rose shook her head. “I wish I could, but you know as well as I do that it’s not possible. Father is mad enough that Jace is not dead.”Leo was still here. I had not had the chance to meet him again. I could not dare risk it. We could not let Al

I told Demian about the rumor when he came back at night. He said he knew about it.“I know you are not sleeping with him,” he said. “Besides, Theodore is not brave enough to lay his hand on you.”“I think it’s not bravery but insolence to lay hand on his sister-in-law,” I said.“It is, isn’t it?” he chuckled. “Try saying that to Luke.”“It is Luke, not Theodore I’m worried about. Theodore won’t do anything. But never ever be alone in a room with Luke, or Father for that matter.”“What if they summon me?” I asked.“Father might and you have to go if he does. But as I said, I’m keeping an eye on you. I will try not to let anything happen to you, but I can’t guarantee. Try to be with Rose. I talked to Rose and she said she will protect you for the time being,” he said. “But if Luke summons you, you don’t have to go. “Your brother wants to take me to the library,” I told Demian after we came back to our chamber. It was good to see Leo, although I was not satisfied; I wanted to get him alone so we could talk. I said I trusted Demian, but not entirely. It was hard, if not impossible and stupid, to trust a Silverclaw. They were too sly for their own good.“Did you tell him to?” Demian asked. He did not believe Theodore suggested it on his own. “I know how much you like books.”“Your brother wants to take me there because I told him I like books,” I said.“How many times did you tell him? A hundred times over the course of a few days so he would be forced to take you there because he is so soft towards you?”It was like Demian could see through me. It never happened before, so I was not prepared for such a forward attack.“What do you think of me, Demian? Do you think I am a vile and sly woman?”Demian smirked. His silver eyes never seemed so warm before.“Not vile, darling. You are rather pleasant. B

Sully was okay. It was my first thought upon seeing her. I had not seen her in a while, but she was the same as ever. Sharp crimson eyes and those plump lips that told a lie within a flash and a face that could mimic her lies.Rezef Thorn could never suit her. He was a man of words, brave but not strong enough and a hero. He was hailed a hero. But when I saw Demian Silverclaw with her, oddly enough, I felt that he suited her more than anyone ever could. He was a liar and a manipulator, just like her. There was no better couple than them. And seeing them together, I had no doubt that their relationship as a married couple was not an act, but real, despite the situation that threw them together.Sully explained everything to me.“When asked, tell Alexander that I seem to have some problem with fertility, so you are making me a potion,” Sully said.“Are you really?” I asked jokingly. She exchanged a look with Demian. “I don’t want children, you know that,” she said. I knew that. In fact,

When we made the illegal potions at the academy, we would see it to a merchant named Owl because he had an owl with him all the time. We would never reveal our identity. We would wear cloaks and masks- Leo a fox mask and me a hawk mask. Our secret names were respectively Fox and Hawk. The merchant would then sell it to buyers underground. Like us, the merchant never revealed his identity to us, although we found it out anyway.Once, at home, I made a potion using a full-blood vampire’s blood that I bought from Owl. I made poison for full-blood vampires. In the books, it was said that it was almost impossible to brew a potion that would hurt a vampire, or even kill it. But I made it possible. I was seventy percent sure of the potion’s success. I sold it to Owl on my own since Leo was not with me. I got the most money selling that poison. I never thought it was Demian who bought it from Owl.The specialty of the poison was that it was a slow-killer so you would not even notice something

“I knew Theodore had an alchemist who gave him medicine in secret. Father would not approve so Theodore had to keep it a secret,” Demian said. “I also knew it was Leo, but back then, I did not know this Leo is your friend Leo. I realized so after you told me about him. And I also looked into your background, so there is that.”“He is here because of your father,” I said. “Do you know that?”“Of course. I was the one who told him about Leo. Leo also agreed readily because he wanted to see you,” Demian said. “Although Father did not tell me exactly why needs an alchemist.”“And you don’t know why?” I asked.“I do. It’s my job to know things, Sully darling,” he said. It was rather strange for us to talk so comfortably as if we had known each other our whole lives. He braided my hair as he talked, his movements smooth. I taught him how to braid; he was a quick learner.“Won’t you tell me?” I asked.“First of all, what do you know about vampires?” he asked.“Well, that they drink blood, ob
