I stared at the man who the guards escorted to my father. He was filthy, his blond hair full of mud and filth, his clothes ripped from places. He had dried blood on his face and the parts of his body that was visible.

The man was my brother, whom I could barely recognize.

I wanted to hug him and bury my face in the crook of his neck, no matter how filthy he was. He was alive, at least.

But I could not hug him since Father was asking him questions, without letting him to change and clean himself first.

“Who let you out, you said?” Father asked. He had asked the same question before.

“Rose Silverclaw, the daughter of Aunt Rosalia,” Jace answered.

“Why did she help you?”

“She doesn’t want to stay there, at such a monstrous place. She said her father makes her do cruel things that she doesn’t want to do. If she doesn’t do as her father says, he will get rid of her. She said she will help Sully too.”

“Tell me everything about what is going on there and about your sister,” Father said.

Mother fussed over me a lot. She cried about my wounds and then cried about Sully. She asked me how she was and if she was hurt. I assured her that Sully was okay. But truth be told, I did not know. I did not like Sully with Demian Silverclaw, even though I did not know him well.Sully whispered into my ear that Demian helped me survive the game and that he was the one who shot arrows. She told me not to mention it to anyone, so I did not. I did not tell Rose about it either. That was why I believed Sully had a hold over Demian Silverclaw, since he listened to her and protected me. That was going against his own father. He still did it for Sully. In my opinion, telling Father of this would be a good idea. But I decided to listen to Sully. Since she told me not to tell anyone, I would not tell anyone. I valued her words more than anyone else’s.Selina put ointment on the whip marks on my back. They did not hurt as much as before, although there was always a tingle of pain when I tried

The night the fire happened and Jace escaped passed in utter confusion. Demian and his father talked about how it could have happened. Neither of them was at all affected by the fact that Kierra was dead.Well, I did not care either.I had not seen Clarissa as of yet. Dela said Clarissa was in another chamber, away from all the chaos. Therefore, I still did not know how Clarissa felt about it.I stayed with Dela and Rosalia. Rose also went to Alexander’s office to discuss everything.I had dozed off for a while since I was tired; I had barely slept since the moment I let Demian take me. My whole body was sore and I walked a little awkwardly. When Demian came to fetch me, it was almost morning. He led me to our chamber without a word. Then, he stripped and went to sleep with my body pressed against his. He had not said a single word. It shocked me.At some point, I fell asleep too. Now, it was morning. I woke up just a while ago and broke my fast with a few dates (they made my teeth ac

“Did Demian suspect anything?” Rose asked. She was wearing a white full-sleeved dress. The train of the dress was long. Her long straight silver hair was loose on her back with a middle part. She looked like a divine goddess.“He asked me if I had anything to do with it,” I said. “I don’t think he suspects me truly.”It was a lie. Demian suspected me all the time. He believed I lied a lot. I could see it in the way he looked at me. But as I promised before, he would never catch me in a lie, no matter how much he suspected me.“Do you think he suspects me?” Rose asked.“There is no reason to.”“He doesn’t trust me,” she said.“That does not matter. I am pretty sure he does not suspect you of freeing Jace.”We were at a theater. It was the first time I could go outside the estate. I could go only because I was with Rose and her guards. Her guards were far from us. There was a play going and it included the audience clapping their hands at the same time. It was somehow important. Rose sa

Goosebumps erupted on my skin at the sudden chill. The library was huge, but filled with bookshelves in row so each part of the library was hidden from other parts. It was an enjoyable experience to lose myself among those alleys.Theodore was not here. I had not seen him during the fire, not after it. I went to inquire after him, but he did not open the door. Demian said Theodore had episodes when his legs hurt more than usual and he did not get out of his chamber, no matter what. The windows of the library were rarely open. But today, one window was wide open. A cold wind was blowing through it, making me shiver. I wished I had brought a shawl.I wrapped my arms around myself to shield myself from the cold. It was not helpful at all.“Did you help your brother escape?”I turned my head so fast that I gave myself a headache. I almost bumped into Alexander Silverclaw’s front. He was way too close.I backed up and stared at him.“Your grace.” I performed a small curtsy. He grabbed my c

Sully was sitting on the couch, her knees bent and tucked under her thighs. Her hands were shaking. Her eyes were closed. She was burning up.“Sully,” I called, cupping her face. Her skin was very hot. After we returned from the library, a fever took over and she had been in bed since then. She refused to go to have dinner. I sneaked in some bread and soup. She drank a spoonful of soup and ran to the bathroom to throw up.Then, she sat on the couch and refused to move. It had been a long time since then. She had not moved an inch. She groaned occasionally and called my name, but that was it.I called the maids and made them bring me a bowl of ice-cold water and a small piece of cloth. I sent them back again.I sat beside her, wet the cloth and wiped her face with it. I undressed her and wiped her entire body with it. I had never taken care of anyone before. However, I was surprised to find that I did not find it uncomfortable. A little foreign, but that was to be expected since it was

I woke up in the middle of the night, naked under the blanket, and in Demian’s arms. I was sweaty and it was too hot.Demian was sleeping. Or, at least, he appeared to be asleep. I squirmed. I was always uncomfortable about sweat. Demian did not sweat much since he was a vampire. I also never sweated much. Now that I was sweaty, I felt disgusted.“Demian…,” I whispered. He opened his eyes so fast that it scared me.“You are awake,” he said. His voice was calm and emotionless, like most of the time. He was always so to the point that he sounded emotionless.“I am sweaty,” I said. He was holding me too tight. I could not even pull my arms out of the blanket. “I smell.”“It’s not a bad smell,” he said, unwrapping the blanket like I was a present. He touched my forehead. “The fever subsided, that’s why you are sweaty.”“I can’t remember anything.”“I don’t expect you to.”Demian opened the windows. I felt better when the cold air of the night touched my naked skin. The memory of what Alex

There was no funeral for Kiara. It was because Kiara’s mother Clarissa’s family never held a funeral. Dela said that Clarissa insisted on not holding a funeral and Alexander was happy to oblige. He did not like to bother about such things anyway. At breakfast, I felt disgusted. I could barely look at anyone. I did not, not once, as much as glance at Alexander because I would not be able to look at him without glaring. That would be a horrendous thing to do, knowing Alexander’s madness. He might torture me, skin me alive for all I knew.Dela talked a lot, like she always did. Most of it was directed towards me, unfortunately. For that reason, I could not stay quiet, even if I wanted to.“I must say, Sully, we should go and shop to our heart’s extent,” Dela said. By ‘we’, she meant me, her and Rosalia. “You look pale these days. If we go out, it will lighten up your mood.”“Please accept my thanks, Mother,” I said with a smile even though I felt like crying. I did not want to be here. I

I had seen this room only once. It was a big spacious place with a piano in the middle. In front of the piano was a leather bench.Demian closed the door behind us noiselessly and led me towards the piano with a hand on the small of my back. There was a piano at House Star as well, which was for my mother. She could play well. Sierra also could play. Sometimes she and mother used to play together while the three of us- Selina, Jace and me- would listen, sitting on the floor beside the piano. We would even dance sometimes like the crazy little children we were. We used to be more alike when we were little. Then we grew older and developed different personalities. Selina grew quieter and I became too suspicious of everything to enjoy the little things like music. I was busy rebelling against the injustice towards women. I was mentally suffering because by then, I knew that the next head would be Kyle and I did not want that. Only Jace remained the same- kind, loyal and loving.Yet, as I

“Did you have a sexual relationship with Shea?” I asked when Demian climbed onto the bed beside me after finishing his bath. He had come back a while ago, with blood on his cloak, and took a long cold bath.“No,” Demian answered.“Are you telling the truth?”“Do I lie to you?”“Then, what happened with her? I know something did happen,” I said.“Did she tell you that?”“Just tell me.”“Well, she once tried to seduce me. But I told her not to come to my chamber again and said that if she did, I would get her tongue cut. Nothing happened between us. I never had any sexual relationship with any maid.”“I see.”“You don’t believe me?” he asked.I sat up. “I believe you.”“Now tell me. Did she tell you about it?”I shook my head. “I guessed.”“A guess?” He seemed skeptical.“I had the feeling. She told me that you knew about her secret. That was when I guessed that… And she flees the room right after you come in. That’s why I thought there must be something else. So I asked her about it an

“I want to ask you something,” I said.“Yes, my lady?” She put down her cup on her saucer.“Did you ever have share a bed with my husband?”She turned red. “My lady…”“I have asked you a question.”She shook her head.“But you tried, didn’t you?”“I heard… it’s always better if you can get a lord to bed you and if you can get pregnant… Since Lord Demian did not have an heir and was not married, I tried to… seduce him. But he… threw me out of his chamber and told me never to do it again and that if I did, he would tell everyone of my secret and get my tongue cut. That’s why I never…”Well, that sounded like Demian.“But my lady, you can be certain that I would never… do it again. I would never try to…”“I know,” I said calmly. “I just wanted to know the truth.”“Did Lord Demian tell you?”“No. I guessed it,” I said. She was shocked. She stared at me in surprise.“Are you angry, my lady?” Shea asked slowly and cautiously.“No. I don’t care about my husband’s past as long as he is loyal

My time at the tower was going well. Actually, it was better than I thought. I spent most of my time at the lab, making potions. Demian had gathered so many ingredients that most of the time, I had no problem making a certain potion without checking what ingredients I had first. I always checked though. It had become a habit. One of the first things that they taught you in an alchemy class was that you must always check the ingredients before making a potion to make sure that you had the right amount of ingredients needed for that potion.Alchemy was a fun subject, especially for those who were good at using the correct measure of ingredients and who were good at cooking. I was not good at cooking. I could certainly cook a few dishes now, but back then, I could not cook a single thing. But I was good measuring correctly. I was also patient about it which helped. Something about mixing a few ingredients, sometimes just a drop of some, and then getting a liquid that could do things alwa

Sully never told me before last night that Rezef had true feelings for her. I always assumed that the marriage was only to tie those families together because of a previous contract. It meant I took someone’s love of his life away from him. Well, my father did, but I was the one who married Rezef’s fiancée.Did I regret it? No. Did I feel guilty? No. Did I want to fuck Sully in front of him so he would know who Sully truly belonged to? Yes. Hell yes.Sully was eating a slice of watermelon. It was a big slice. She was eating it in a rather adorable manner. I could not stop watching her.“It could have been a little sweeter, but I like it anyway,” Sully said. Her chin was dripping the red juice of the watermelon. If Rezef could see her like this at this moment, would he fall in love with her all over again?“What are you thinking about?” Sully asked when she was done with the slice.“About what you said about Rezef,” I said.“What about him?” she asked nonchalantly. It was obvious she d

The fact that Sully had been pregnant knew only a few people. There had been a rumor going around. I questioned Jade Star about it and he was forced to admit it. He said Sully had a miscarriage and that she was not pregnant anymore. Now, he was planning to take revenge on the Silverclaws. I joined him because I also had a debt to settle with them. Alexander Silverclaw took my bride from me on our wedding day. They took the woman from me who I wanted all my life since the moment I saw her.I never wanted much things in my life. But Sully- she was the only thing I truly wanted. I set my eyes on her and knew I had to have her. When I met her, I thought she was the prettiest girl every with brown skin and ruby red eyes and long curly hair. She talked little, but watched everything with curious eyes. I remembered asking my father who that little girl was. When he told me, I knew I needed to have her. I wanted her.But then I heard that she ran away from

For some reason, I dreamed of Millie tonight. It was strange. I never even thought about her. At least, not much.I woke up and found Demian beside me. He was staring at me. Okay, it was a little uncomfortable to think that he watched me while I was sleeping.“What’s wrong?” he asked. “A nightmare?”“No… Just a dream,” I said. “About my half-sister.”“Millie Thorn.”“Ah yes, she is a Thorn now. I keep forgetting,” I said. “I wonder if she is happy there. I wonder if Rezef is treating her right.”“You said Rezef is a righteous and kind man. If he doesn’t treat his own wife right, won’t it defeat the purpose of his righteous and kind personality?” Demian did not like Rezef at all. He might be annoyed that I told him that Rezef was like the hero of a story.“Rezef is like that, but he… He can be harsh, you know, without even meaning to. For example, he can’t show care and love even if he wants to. I have noticed this a lot of times. For example, when he used to want to meet me, he would

Rezef’s father died this morning. It had been sudden. The maids woke me up and told me about it. Apparently, he fell from the roof.“How did he fall from the roof?” I asked Rezef.“I don’t know. It happened in the middle of the night,” he said. He was hastily changing his attire.“Why didn’t you wake me up?”“For what? It’s not like you can bring him back.”I did not talk back. It was not good if I talked back. What if Rezef sent me back? Now that Rezef’s father was dead, Rezef was the new Head of House Thorn. The problem was that Rezef did not have an heir and according to the tradition, the new Head must already have an heir. What would happen now?Rezef had an older sister and a younger brother. It did not make sense that someone else other than him could be the new Head. Well, his older sister could not be the Head anyway. So, his younger brother remained. It was not like Byron had any heir either. He was only sixteen.“What will happen now?” I asked.“What do you mean?” Rezef sou

We went to the top floor today. The strange things Shea talked about last night turned out to be something that I knew very well. All those things in glass jars- big and small- I knew them a little too well. It was in a room that was accessible from my bed chamber only. There was a big table there, a cauldron, many pots, spoons- long and short, small and big- knives in various sizes.“You made me a… workplace,” I murmured. “Gosh, Demian, you made me a lab!”I threw myself at Demian and he caught me casually as if I weighted nothing. I wrapped my legs around him and laughed. I could not believe he did this for me.“That’s so… Gosh, I love it, Demian! I love it a lot! I love you!”“I had a feeling you might like it,” he said.“You really did thought of everything, didn’t you?”He put me down and kissed me on the forehead.“I wanted to build you a lab for a while now. But I thought it would be better if it was not at the estate, since… Father might start to blame you for everything, like

Demian came back two hours later. His hair was damp and he was wearing a black robe. Shea bowed to him and me and then left since it appeared Demian made it clear that when he and I were together, Shea or any other maid could not stay.“You did not tell me about her before,” I said. “That she can talk.”“It was a good surprise,” Demian said.“I don’t like surprises.”“I know,” he said. “Actually, I did not think it was that important for you to know earlier.”I decided not to press on the matter farther. I was having a hard time coming in terms with the fact that I had to stay in a tower on the top floor.I still could not believe Demian did such a thing. How could he?“The water is cold here all the time,” Demian said. “I suggest never to take a bath in the water just like it is. Tell the maids to warm it first.”“You used the cold water, didn’t you?” Demian preferred cold water over warm or normal temperature water. In fact, I once found him soaking in an ice-cold water bath.
