Chapter 7:
Lancelin’s P.O.V
“A red lipstick from my luxury line deluxe edition?” Amber Rose Verborg, the CEO of one of the famous luxury make-up brands in the UA, Esteem Amber, a part-time supermodel and a Succubus, a female Incubus, raised a perfectly arched eyebrow at me from the opposite side of the table.
“Is there a problem?” I asked her, trying to give away anything that would raise unwanted interests in my personal life.
“Absolutely not.” Amber Rose smiled widely and tilted her head to the side making her auburn curls brush her exposed shoulders. “However, I will need specifics.”
I was currently at the La Donna Deluxe Hotel in Queens, New York, on a dinner date discussing business and family matters. To outsiders, it may look like we were on date but we weren’t actually. Amber Rose was my cousin, my maternal uncle’s daughter and she was currently running a very successful make-up company. She was also a big gossip and the main source of information for my extended family.
“What kind of specifics?” I eyed her suspiciously as she picked up her wine glass with slender fingers and took a sip while studying me with open interest.
My mother’s side of the family was full of natural red-heads, a trait that did not pass over to any of her sons. Instead, both Acelin and I were mirror images of our fathers. Amber Rose however, had inherited the family’s auburn hair, their honey gold skin tone and the slightly short stature that was common amongst the women in the family. My mother was five feet two and Amber Rose had barely touched the five feet three mark. But thanks to the six inch golden heels on her feet, she almost managed to reach my shoulder.
Tonight, she was dressed in a black satin bodycon dress that reached to her knees and threw her bright hair into sharp focus. The dress was off shoulder with the sleeves reaching her elbows. A golden Rolex watch sat on her wrist and she wore two diamond danglers on her ears. Every male attention in the room was fixated on her, but Amber Rose seemed not to notice any of it. It was only a facade however, because I knew extremely well that she was already searching for her next meal amongst the crowd, much like I would.
“Hair colour, skin colour…eyes, etcetera.” Amber Rose waved her hand dismissively. “All the basic stuff.”
“Dark hair, midnight black to be precise.” I listed off the answers to the questions she had asked for. “Golden olive complexion and deep-set chocolate brown eyes.”
When I finished, Amber Rose was looking at me in open surprise. “Wow! I’ve never seen Lancelin Eustein be this descriptive about a woman in my five hundred and forty three years on this earth. Who is she? Now I’m desperate to meet her.”
“Hold your horses, Amber Rose!” I scolded her, even though she was a grown woman in her own right. She was still twenty nine years younger than me, so it was natural for me to feel protective of her. “She is just my new secretary and the lipstick is a way of repaying her for her help in a recent project. Don’t go looking for unnecessary trouble.”
“Amber Rose makes me sound like a grandma.” She sighed. “Why can’t you just call me Amy or Rose like everyone else does?”
“Amber Rose is a perfectly elegant name,” I told her. “I find it more suitable for you. Now, tell me, can you get me one of your red lipsticks from the deluxe edition?”
“Can you get me one of your red lipsticks from the deluxe edition?” Amber Rose repeated my words in a mocking baby voice. “Do you think the red deluxe line has only one shade? My company has over one hundred shades of red and twelve in the deluxe line. I’ll have to select a proper colour based on the skin tone you just described.”
“That’s fine.” I told her. “How fast can you get me the lipstick?”
“I’ll have it delivered to your office by tomorrow morning.” Amber Rose smiled. “Now, tell me dear cousin, how is Acelin? And aunt? I haven’t been able to contact her in a while.”
“They’re fine,” I sighed. “Nosy as usual, just like the rest of you bunch.”
“You can’t blame us for being curious,” Amber Rose twirled a strand of her hair around her fingertips. “Everyone wants to know what the future King is up to. When will he be crowned? Who is he currently dating? Will he get married before taking the throne or after?”
“Then you better tell them to forget about such ridiculous thoughts.” I paused as a waiter came to deliver our dinner and spoke only when we were out of earshot. “Because I don’t plan on getting married anytime soon. Besides, if they wanted a wedding, they could’ve just attended the Vampire Prince’s wedding last year.”
“That was a different scenario. Erick’s wedding and yours are two completely different things.” Amber Rose waved her hand dismissively. “And you never know…I never thought that my brooding, uptight older cousin will ever ask me for a favor, that too for buying a red lipstick for his new secretary! I mean…you’ve never even asked for a lipstick for any of your mistresses! Now I really feel like anything is possible!”
“Let’s just get dinner over with.” I told her irritably as I picked up my spoon and dug into my soup.
Amber Rose’s words stayed with me long after I bed farewell to my cousin and got into my car to head back home. I had several real estate’s around New York but I could call none of them my home. I have been staying in the ReefWood HQ for the last two decades, ever since I built my company.
My ancestral home was in Prague in the Czech Republic. My parents rule from the Avalanche Palace that I had called my home when I was younger. Soon, after my coronation, I’ll have to return to Prague as well, but honestly, I don’t want to. New York holds a special place in my heart and I find it difficult to let go of a city that hasn’t even seen as many sunrises as I have.
“Sire, isn’t that Mr. Billard’s car?”Martin asked as we were crossing Madison Avenue.
I looked out the window at the direction Martin had pointed out and sure enough, Acelin’s Bombay Blue Audi Q8 was parked outside a small Italian restaurant.
“What should I do, Sire?” Martin asked as he stopped the car at a red light.
I was about to tell him to ignore it and move on, that was until I noticed who he was with. Sanaya Johnson was in Acelin’s arms and both of them had big smiles on their faces as Acelin picked her up and spun her around.
I leaned forward in my seat to have a better look at the duo with my eyebrows furrowed. “Follow them.” I instructed Martin when Acelin held the door open for Sanaya and she got into the passenger’s seat of his car.
“Sire?” Martin looked back at me in surprise but nodded and did as told when he saw my expression.
It’s been a while since I saw Acelin smile like this…so carefree and happy. As for Sanaya, I didn’t know that she could smile at all. She always came across as too serious and a workaholic. The smiles she gave me at work all seemed too professional and polite, as if I’d swallow her whole if she didn’t smile.
Watching her now, in this carefree avatar, I wondered what it would feel like to watch her go wild. To see her with her hair down so I could run my fingers through those luscious silken strands of midnight. To see her in normal clothing rather than the professional shirts and skirts. To watch her cheeks flush in excitement or a blush. To hear her laughter echo throughout my house as I kissed those gorgeous full lips, drinking in her laughter, absorbing her happiness into my soul.
We followed Acelin’s car to a residential area in Manhattan Avenue where a bunch of old buildings stood proudly, upholding the tests of time. Sanaya got off the car and waved goodnight to Acelin and walked into the gated community. The security guard gave her a wave and they exchanged a few words before Sanaya walked inside and Acelin’s car drove away, but not before flashing the back lights twice.
I smirked. Bastard had known all along that I had followed them. Of course he did, he was nosy as hell and prone to noticing everything that even the most skilled detective would have missed.
“Sire, should I wait or head back?” Martin asked a bit unsurely, trying his best to keep the amusement off his voice and failing miserably.
It was only then that I noticed the irrationality of my behavior.
I was Lancelin Eustein, the CEO of ReefWood Inc. and the future King of all Incubi. I did not stalk my secretaries and worry about them mixing with brother.
“Let’s go.” I told Martin as I leaned back in my seat.
As for Sanaya Johnson, I had something else planned.
Chapter 8:Sanaya’s P.O.V“I’m home!” I called out as I shut the front door behind me.“Maa?” I asked out loud when I didn’t hear her reply. “Maa, where are you?”Hanging my keys in the key holder beside the door, I took off my shoes and entered the house. The bright neon green sticky note stuck to the fridge was like a huge pop-up sign that I already knew the contents of, but I ripped it off the fridge and read it anyway.Gone to Mrs. Sharma’s for Maata Ki Chowki. Don’t wait up for me. P.S- Mrs. Sharma’s son, Rahul, he’s also going to be there. I heard he’s a civil engineer. I’ll save you a seat.I sighed and threw the note away in the trash can. Only my mom would make a post script longer than the actual message and advertise her friend’s ‘talented son’ all at once. Her
Chapter 9:Sanaya’s P.O.VMy breath was a bit unsteady as I walked into ReefWood HQ the next morning. I couldn’t tell if it was because I was barely skimming the eight o’ clock mark this morning or because of that blasted dream last night, but my hands were a bit shaky as I pressed the elevator buttons to the sixteenth floor and I was pretty sure that the entire building could hear my heart beat.Incubi could invade dreams. Fuck! How could I have forgotten one of the most crucial powers an Incubus has? It was the first thing that Acelin had warned me about when I was first promoted to the position of a Scribt.“Not all Incubi possess this power,” Acelin said to me, his bright crystalline blue eyes clear as the ocean. “But some of us do and it can be very dangerous for the human. Mostly all high ranking Incubi can invade dreams.”“I understand, Sir.”
Chapter 10:Sanaya’s P.O.V“Sanaya! Hold up!”I paused on my way to the exit and looked back to find Tanya running towards me in her disastrous high heels. I half expected her to slip on the polished marble floor and break a leg or two, but the woman managed to gracefully come to a stop in front of me without breaking a sweat.“Good! I was able to catch you just in time.” She panted with a hand on her chest. “Are you done for the day? Do you wanna hang out?”“Hang out? Where?” I asked her and noticed three other people had come to a stop a few feet away from us.“The Vixen.” Tanya said with a huge smile and turned back and motioned the others to come join us. I immediately recognized Martin from the group. He wasn’t wearing his chauffer’s uniform this evening and instead had a light blue shirt on that complemented his icy blue eyes
Chapter 11:Sanaya’s P.O.V“Yes, she knows, Soph…TinTin.” Martin spoke from the bar. “She’s the Sire’s Scribt.”Everyone seemed to visibly relax and breathe a sigh of relief.“What the others meant by the Supernatural club was that we all know that our CEO is the future Incubus King and we are a part of the supernatural world as well.” Martin explained to me as he came to stand beside me and placed a comforting hand on my shoulder. “Well…they are at least. You and I are the only humans.”“Technically, you’re not really human.” Tanya tilted her whiskey glass at Martin before taking a sip.“Technically, you just scared Sanaya to death.” Martin said in a mocking voice, imitating the way Tanya had spoken. Tanya just stuck her tongue out at him.“So…what’s exactly going on in her
Chapter 12:Sanaya’s P.O.V“Sir?” I knocked on the door twice with my knuckles and entered Lancelin’s office only after getting a response from him.“Sir,” I held out the planner for him to take. “The Internal Affairs Department has submitted the result of the polls that the bars recently conducted. They have also placed in several suggestions that the employee’s had made and are now waiting for your approval.”Lancelin took the planner off my hand without even glancing away from the file he was reading and started to scroll through the pages immediately.“Tangshineun nu-guwah yakso-geul jabasseoyo?” (With whom did you make an appointment?) Lancelin asked as he was still scrolling through the planner.“Mswa hamkke. Stonewellui jinsil-ibnida.” (With Ms. Ruth from Stonewell, Sir.) Was my immediate response.Wait. A. Minute.
Chapter 13:Sanaya’s P.O.VLancelin Eustein, the CEO of ReefWood Inc. and the future King of all Incubi in the planet…had a sweet tooth. His basket was filled with Twix bars, Oreos, M&M’s, KitKats and Reese’s as we neared the cash register. I tried to hold in my laugh when laugh when Lancelin peeked into my cart to see what I’d gotten and saw his disappointed frown when he found only cheeses, some Doritos and some hot pockets. There were also some spice roasted hazelnuts and pistachios thrown into the mix, as well as a pack of dried cranberries. They would all pair very well with some Barbera or some Pinot.“I think you forgot the Hershey’s and Snickers, Sir. Should I go grab them for you?” I asked with the most innocent voice I could master.“Not another word, Ms. Johnson. Not another word.” He glared at me from the corner of his eyes.I could
Chapter 14:Sanaya’s P.O.V“You got invited where?” Tanya and Sophia gasped in unison.“To Ms. Amber Rose Verborg’s party?” I looked at the two women in confusion as their mouths hit the floor. “Okay, what am I missing?”“Honey!” Sophia put her hands on my shoulders and gave me a little shake. “You’re wearing an Esteem Amber lipstick from the Deluxe collection! How could you not know the owner of the company?”Oh! “Wait…how do you know I’m wearing Esteem Amber?”I frowned at Sophia.“That colour is unique to Esteem Amber.” Tanya told me. “I would’ve bough it already if it wasn’t that damn expensive. I’m saving up my bonuses.”“Me too!” Sophia chimed in. “But, let’s discuss that later, shall we? Sanaya needs help and I
Chapter 15:Sanaya’s P.O.VAcelin took one look at me and his lips turned up into a ridiculously large gleeful smile. If I hadn’t been so flustered, I would’ve thrown a champagne flute at his head, but sadly, Lancelin had his arm around my waist and Acelin was safe and sound with his obvious joy…for now.Even Martin had given me a smirk when he had seen me get into the car after Lance. It had caused me to check my appearance several times in my compact mirror, but everything had seemed fine…except for the blush on my cheeks that refused to disappear and the tiny but noticeable mark on my neck…which I had fixed with a tiny bit of concealer. Lancelin had frowned at the concealer but had otherwise said nothing.Surprisingly, Lancelin had held his hand out for me when we got off the car and he had had his arm around my waist ever since. I didn’t quite know what to make of it. I cou
The Accidental DateAcelin’s P.O.VMy mother always told me I was never meant for politics. I was too much my father’s son; an artist, a dreamer and a creator. But not a very good politician.Queen Valleria Eustein had tried her best to groom me in her ways, so I could be ready to take the throne in case my younger half-brother, Lancelin Eustein, turned out to be too much like his father. But it was soon realized that it wasn’t necessary. Even though both of Queen Valleria’s sons looked just like our fathers, everything else came from our mother. And we wouldn’t have it any other way.But now, looking at the man sitting opposite to me, I was beginning to feel at a loss for not having my mother’s keen outlook, her sly way of reading people just by looking at their eyes.“So?” He raised a perfectly groomed eyebrow at me, his dark, dark lips tilting up in
Winter SolsticeSanaya’s P.O.V:“There are way too many guests today…” I told Amber, clutching her hand in mine as we peaked from behind the corridors, at a safe distance from the crowd and hidden in the shadows.Lancelin had decided to throw a sort of ‘after-party’ to celebrate his coronation properly, since his actual coronation ended up in a disaster. Also, since Queen mother Valleria had rushed to get the crown on Lance’s head, the coronation had been super rushed, which meant that a lot of people, including several members of the Dark Council, hadn’t been able to attend. Hence the after-party.“Don’t be a sissy!” Amber scolded. “You’re a vampire now, a part of the immortal world itself and Lancelin’s fiancé. Hold your head high and rock the shit out of this party.”I looked at Amber wide eyed. Why
PermissionLancelin’s P.O.V:“How do I look?” I asked Acelin as he raised an eyebrow at me.“I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the clothes or your hairstyle.” Acelin shrugged, looking me up and down. This was probably the first time in my life that I had asked my older half-brother for his opinions on my clothes and he was quiet enjoying my dilemma. It may not look like it but I’d put a lot of effort into today’s clothes and my appearance. I had dumped my usual dark suits for a steel grey suit jacket and trousers, paired with a sky colored shirt. I had also combed my hair back and skipped the gel. Light colors are supposed to make you more attractive and charming, right?I had also chosen the flowers carefully as well as the gifts and I had made sure that the dinner reservations were up to the mark. Everything had to be perfect
Epilogue:The Dark Council Vault“Thank you for gathering here,” Miaka spoke to the general audience, her brothers and sister, gathered around a round table. The vault was mental and every member was here through their sub-consciousness; but every decision made here was very much conscious. She had been able to create these mental vaults since she was a child and they became very useful as she grew up when she could arrange emergency Dark Council meetings without everyone having to be physically present. She had been influenced by the legend of King Arthur and his round table for his knights while designing the outline for this mental room, in which all the Knights bore equal power. Similarly, all Kings and Queen here were equal, even though they considered her their leader. Each King/Queen was also given a throne to sit on.“We are here today to discuss a pressing issue at our hands.” Miaka looked
Chapter 61:Sanaya’s P.O.VThe entire terrace was lit up like a Christmas tree. Fairy lights hung from the railing of the terrace and the roses were bordered with red fairy lights to bring them to life. Even the gazebo was lit up and there were red velvet drapes all around them to give us privacy. But the biggest surprise was the table set in the middle of the terrace, right in front of the lotus shaped fountain. It has several food items, wine and even champagne and what appeared to be a red velvet cake, all surrounded by fresh plucked roses.“Happy Birthday.” Lance whispered into my ears as he wrapped his arms around me from behind.“Oh my God…” I whispered in surprise. “It’s November 3rd already? How could I have forgotten my own birthday?”“I don’t blame you.” Lance said, still whispering so as not to ruin the serenity of
Chapter 60:Sanaya’s P.O.VEvery Incubus in the Kingdom mourned the loss of the former King. They were spared the gory details about his advent into darkness and how he wanted to manipulate Mages and other creatures of Shadowland to gain control over other dimensions. It was a unanimous decision by the Queen mother, Lance and Acelin. The people will remember Nathaniel Eustein as a just King who died to save his son from a corrupt mage. He would become a hero and Lancelin could rule proudly as a martyr’s son rather than the son of a traitor. Everything had been calculated carefully to secure Lancelin’s rule and I was in agreement with it no matter how much it hurt to stand in the front line of the grand funeral service that had been arranged for the King.“Sometimes, it’s the best option to grin and bear than to face a revolt. I’d survived the loss of my mate…I cannot bear to surv
Chapter 59:Sanaya’s P.O.V“Martin?” The King asked with a frown, his hands still holding me down on the bed.“I’m trying but nothing seems to work on her.” Martin looked at me confused before chanting another spell…but once again, nothing happened.“What the hell are you doing, you useless bruja!” Nathaniel yelled at Martin and the next instant, he was being slammed against the wall beside the bed, allowing me to untangle myself from the bed sheets and scurry away. When I noticed that Martin and Nathaniel were focused on each other, I got off the bed and rolled under it, away from their sight. I needed to plan my escape but I had to get away from their line of vision first.“Martin!” Nathaniel spoke a warning, but Martin didn’t loosen his hold. I didn’t know what happened next but very calmly, Nathaniel told Martin to loosen hi
Chapter 58:Lancelin’s P.O.V“Mauve?” Miaka asked surprised as we all rushed out of the dungeons. “But she’s dead.”“Yes and she’s left behind a disciple.” I spoke through gritted teeth as betrayal made my blood boil. “Martin.”“How’s that possible? Martin is without any magean powers.” Acelin said as he rushed to keep up with my strides. “He’s no better than a human.”“Have you heard of dark mages?” I asked them both, pausing for just an instant so I could look at their faces and instantly, Miaka’s eyes widened. “You have, haven’t you? Tell me everything you know.”Miaka might only be sixteen in human years but she had the mind of a genius. She was also very curious and was always looking for clues and details of every race, every species that existed on Earth and learnin
Chapter 57:Sanaya’s P.O.V“Your Highness,” I sat up in bed after much difficulty.“Ah, it’s alright, my child.” King Nathaniel spoke cheerfully. “Stay in bed, you’re injured.”I listened to him and leaned back against the headboard, my strength wasn’t back to full potential yet and my body was aching, but I felt a lot better than I did a few moments ago. The only problem remained the thirst. I knew I had to drink blood but I was trying to avoid the deed for as long as I could.“I’m sorry for not being more presentable, Your Highness.” I told him sincerely. “I wish we could meet under favorable circumstances.”“Oh, what nonsense!” The king waved it off and sat on the edge of my bed. “I should be the one saying sorry for not visiting you earlier. How are you feeling?”“I’m good,
