Chapter 4: A Blast from the Past
Anaya's P.O.V:
Trevina McKinley lived in the complete opposite direction to Reefwood HQ and at a distance of nearly 2 hours from my house. So once again, I had to get up at 4 in the morning despite having reached home at 12.30am, dress within seconds and have breakfast on the bus, reach Ms. McKinley's office by 8.30am, only to find out that I'd have to wait till 10.30 to meet her. Apparently, she isn't a morning person.
Disappointed and a bit furious at myself for not having researched her better, or at least called her office, I decided to wait two hours and try my hardest to stay awake by the end of it. Then again, why hadn't I researched her properly? It's very unlike me. I always stay prepared for all kinds of circumstances. Oh, yeah! Guess I was busy loathing Mr. Manwhore Eustis who had happily dumped all his shit on me and then gone his merry way banging some poor woman who doesn't even know she'll be tossed aside once he's done with her!
God, he makes me so mad!
Sighing, I took a seat on one of the large couches laid out in the waiting room of the office building, a 4-storied mansion that also acted as her residence. To say that it was posh would be an understatement. This tiny building amid the giant skyscrapers had all the luxuries in the world including an expensive looking coffee machine on one and a fancy mini bar on the other side of a room, big enough to fit a thousand people and decorated with huge lighting fixtures the shape of globes that cascaded down from the plain white and black walls. The couches felt like fluffy clouds when I leaned my back on them. Even the air conditioning was set to relax rather than freeze to death. I could definitely fall asleep in here if I'm not careful enough and given the past two near sleepless days, I didn't quite trust myself.
Getting up, I beelined for the coffee machine in hopes that a cup of caffeine just might keep me awake for the next half hour, but the manual had me rethinking my decision. Half the words were in Japanese or Chinese (never could distinguish the two) and I had no idea what the other half, which was written in English, meant. Even the settings were way advanced to belong to a coffee machine. Where was this manufactured, NASA?
"Do you need any help with that?"
My back stiffened at the slightly husky and all too familiar voice. "Keith?" I turned to face the door.
"Anna?" The old name brought a smile to my face.
"What're you doing here?" I asked my ex-collegiate and ex-boyfriend, Keith Simons.
"I am Ms. McKinley's Personal Secretary." He gave me a dimpled smile. "And you must be Mr. Eustis's Personal Secretary."
"Yeah...." What exactly do you say to your ex-boyfriend after nearly five years apart? There must be some kind of guidebook for Awkward Moments 101?
"You've changed a lot. You look different." He motioned to my hair and clothes.
"I had to." I shrugged. "It's very difficult to get a job when you look like you're still in High School."
"True. You never really grew out of your adorable baby face." He winked, making me giggle.
"Thanks, I'll take that as a complement." I said, laughing.
"It was. I'll get your coffee." Thankfully, Keith seemed to have revised the entire awkward moment’s booklet. Walking over to the machine, he pressed a few buttons and the coffee machine hummed to life, beeping and steaming. He produced a cup from the opposite side of the counter the machine was set on and held it under a lever. Steam came off the cup as the hot espresso poured and more buttons were pressed, he repeated the process under two other levers until a professional cup of cappuccino was formulated.
"Extra sugar and cream with a perfect, professional cappuccino froth!" He said as he handed me the steamy cup of goodness.
"You remember that?" I asked, startled. The scent of freshly brewed coffee making my mouth salivate.
"Of course I do." His smile was wide and genuine. "Come on, let's have a seat."
He led me back to the couches and sat opposite me. "Aren't you going to have some?" I asked, raising my cup as a gesture.
"No, I've already had a huge breakfast." He shrugged.
"Your mom!" Shit, how could I forget? Mrs. Simons was always adamant about her boys having a huge breakfast. And yes, that did include Mr. Simons, or Joe, as he likes to be called. I'd made the mistake of accepting her invitation for breakfast once, back when Keith and I were dating, and I'd been full till dinner. "How is she? It's been ages since I last saw her!"
"She's good. She's asked about you quite a lot since then. She was so sure you'd be her daughter-in-law someday." And here comes the awkward territory.
"Keith, I-"
"Its okay, Anna," he placed a soothing hand on top of mine which was resting on top of the couch. "It's been five years. We've come a long way. It's okay to discuss the past now."
He was right. This didn't have to be awkward. We'd dated for nearly three years. Even planned on getting engaged. But then Keith had to move away to Canada after graduating, he'd been offered his internship there while I'd made it to Bluestar. We'd parted on relatively good terms. We didn't have a choice though; we were at a point in our life where career came first. I had to support my mother and he had to support his family.
"When did you move back to New York?" I asked.
"Last year, actually. I tried to contact you, even went to your old apartment, but it's being turned into a hotel or something." He said.
"Yeah. They were selling the apartment so we had to relocate. It's quite far from here." I told him. "So...anyone else you've been in contact with?"
*
*Two hours went by in a flash as we sat there talking about our old friends, New York, Canada and even us. By the time he had to leave for work, we were almost back to being best friends, like nothing had happened between us at all. The awkwardness had gone away and I was gushing on about my life like I hadn't spoken in years. There was always this thing about Keith, not only was he a good listener but he could make even the most introverted of people acting like a social butterfly. It's one of the reasons why I'd been instantly attracted to him.
At 10.30 on the dot, I was called into Ms. McKinley's office by the same receptionist who'd shown me the waiting room. I walked behind the blonde woman down a long hallway and into a splendid office room.
This place was completely different from Reefwood's office. While Reefwood, although clean and organized, was like a storehouse for millions of files, this place was neat and beautifully decorated. There were even several model houses on various shelves, brought into focus by lighting fixtures from above. Some of Ms. McKinley's earliest and finest works.
The receptionist knocked on a set of double doors and then held it open for me as they replied.
I stepped inside the room and was instantly pinned in place by a pair of gorgeous blue eyes.
She was the most beautiful woman I'd ever laid eyes on. Shiny blonde hair, a face that looked like a Goddess, and a to-die-for slender figure. No wonder Mr. Eustis wanted her at any cost.
"Yes?"
The lyrical voice broke me from my stupor. It also made me realize that my thoughts had drifted towards a very jealous edge, which wasn't supposed to be there.
"Ms. McKinley, I'm Anaya Johnson, Mr. Eustis's Personal Secretary." I told her, taking a seat on a chair on the other side of the desk when she motioned me to.
"Eustis? Which one?" She said with a kind of familiarity I didn't quite like.
"Mr. Lancelot Eustis, ma'am." I answered her and watched as her eyes sparkled with instant interest.
"Lance, huh?" This time, there was an up tilt of her soft pink lips as she spoke his name with that same familiarity. "What does he want?"
"To make a deal with you about a project we're working on." I told her, handing over the file I'd brought with me. "All the details are inside this. Would you like me to brief you about the contents?"
"Sure."
So I did, telling her about our recent project and all the details that go with it, but Trevina seemed like she hardly heard a word I said.
"Good." She told me once I'd finished briefing her. "I like the deal. But I'll need to speak to Mr. Eustis personally if I'm to work with him."
"Okay." Lancelot had told me to hire her at any cost, so I guess I'll have to arrange for the meeting immediately. "When would you like the meeting to be?"
"Now." She finalized. "Take me to him"
I'm quite sure I don't like the sound of that.
Chapter 5: Behind Closed DoorsLancelot's P.O.V:It was 11.46 am when Anaya brought her into my office. I'd been dreading this moment for a while now, but this is important.Anaya looks a little flustered as I turn my attention towards her, she motions her in and then stands behind the set of chairs in which Ms. McKinley takes a seat, pen and paper in hand, ready for taking notes. I'll probably never admit it to her face but she's indeed a very efficient Secretary. But this meeting cannot include her."Ms. Johnson, you won't be required for this meeting. Please wait outside and shut the door behind you." I told her sternly. At first, she looked stunned, but then she nodded her head and went outside the room, closing the door shut behind her. It was only then that the viper spoke."My, my Lancelot." Trevina angled her head to one side, blonde hair sliding over her shoulders like liquid silk. "I didn't expect
Chapter 6: ReunionsAnaya’s P.O.V:“Yes mum! I’m not on a date, I swear! I’m meeting with Mary and then I’ll go straight to her apartment…Okay, I promise I won’t get drunk. Bye mum, love you.”I hung up the phone as I passed the familiar bouncer, who gave me a nod of acknowledgement before putting on his poker face.At ten minutes past nine, Joe’s Bar was comparatively empty, but considering it was a Wednesday night, I wasn’t complaining. This was my favorite place in all of New York, not just because the booze was cheap, but they also serve the best chili in the world.I could easily spot Marissa’s flaming red hair right from the entrance. Her natural hair color was the palest of blonde’s and it tended to make her face look paler too, so she dies it a flaming red to look more vibrant and quite frankly, it matches her personality pretty well.&
Chapter 7: Jealousy and revengeAnaya’s P.O.V:It was two days after Lancelot had left with Antony that Trevina called to get an update on him. To say that she was furious to find him gone would be an understatement.“He went without me? How could he? Tell him to call me as soon as he gets back!” Were her exact words and her tone had made me want to dig up the floor and burrow my head in it. How did Lancelot tolerate her for six years?I was kinda worried that she might just quit even before the contract has been made, but also, I felt weirdly relieved that she might not be working for us anymore. But honestly, the only reason I could feel relieved for her leaving would be because she was Lance’s ex and that she was drop dead gorgeous and Lance just might get back together with her if given the chance...which all led back to me being jealous of her relationship with my Boss…which I had no re
Chapter 8: We’ll SeeAnaya’s P.O.V:“Is everything alright Mr. Eustis?”I asked as I set his coffee down on the desk in front of him. Today was the final day of the one-week deadline he had placed on me and I’d been extra careful to reach office ten minutes before time. But I hadn’t exactly expected Lancelot Eustis to look this exhausted and worried. His shirt, which was the same he’d been wearing last night when I left him, was unbuttoned halfway down his chest, revealing porcelain white skin with a few scattered hair. His hair was in a disarray as if he’d run his hands through them multiple times. But despite that, he still managed to look drop dead gorgeous and I could not be more envious for it. If only I could have that sexy bed hair...But most of all, his cabin looked like a tornado had passed through here. “Did a thief break in?” I asked, worried that that just mi
Chapter 9: A Shot Too CloseAnaya’s P.O.V:I took my appointment letter and my file with me and placed it on my desk. Since this was Lancelot Eustis, I was pretty sure that he would be back before sundown and barking orders till midnight. I was already looking for an apartment around town where I could stay so I didn’t have to spend hours on travel every day. So far I’ve had no luck and the offers I’ve got so far are far too expensive. I’m hoping there will be some place I can stay that won’t suck me dry.“Let’s go, Ms. Johnson. We’re getting late.” Lancelot said from in front of the elevator.I picked up my bag and dashed after him, reaching just in time for the elevator door to ding open. We entered together and as soon as the doors shut, I felt engulfed in Lancelot’s aura. I’d generally avoided staying near Lancelot for too long since it feels suff
Chapter 10: Wilting FlowersAnaya’s P.O.V:I stared at the man in disbelief. How could he? And to think that I’d actually been worried about him!But he couldn’t be that hurt if he could bang a nurse while he was hospitalized, after getting shot only two days ago.I moved back from the curtains of the cabin and strode out the door, slamming it shut in the process. It got me a good few glared from the nursing staff in the corridor, but at least I was satisfied Mr. Eustis would be able to hear it loud and clear.Dumping the flowers I’d bought for him in a trash can just outside the door to Lancelot’s room, I walked as fast as my legs would take me without having to run. I’d nearly made it to the exit to the Hospital when I heard someone calling my name. Ace!Trying my best to regain my composure, I turned towards Ace with a smile on my face, but from the way his smile disapp
Chapter 11: Something UnexpectedAnaya’s P.O.V:It was nearly ten at night when the elevator doors to Lancelot’s office dinged open and he stepped into the room, looking utterly exhausted and ready to pass out.“Mr. Eustis?” I ran out of my cabin and reached him just in time to catch him before he collapsed on the ground. “Lancelot!”“I d-don’t need help!” He fought against my hold on him as he stood up on shaky legs. “Book me a hotel for tonight, now!” He snapped at me as he walked towards his desk. “Where’s the diary I gave you?”“The diary?” I asked him dumbfounded. He couldn’t possibly be thinking about that damned diary at a time like this? “Are you sure you don’t want to rest for a little while?”“Do not tell me what I should and shouldn’t be doing Ms. Johnson. Get that di
Chapter 12: Revelation Anaya's P.O.V:The feeling that I'd messed with something I shouldn't have finally set in as the temperature in the room kept dropping enough to freeze.Lancelot's back was still turned to me, and although I couldn't see his face, I had a feeling it wasn't going to be anything good. The women all around the room seemed to be frozen in place enthralled as they kept staring at his face, their eyes wide and mouth wide open as they looked at Lancelot. And then suddenly, their eyes changed, becoming void of any emotion. Then I heard Lancelot speak, in a voice I've never heard before. A voice so cold it made me shiver all over again."Leave this room and forget you came here today. You will come again when called, if and when I need you."And then, as if in a trance all fifteen of them walked out in perfect synchronization, their eyes dull like they weren't even human but robots on
Epilogue:Anaya’s P.O.V:“Jesus Christ!”“Oh dear!” My mom placed her hand in front of her mouth strategically to hide her smile.“Not funny, mother!” I snapped before turning to the culprit. “What the Hell, Mary?”Mary looked at me from under her lashes, trying her hardest to suppress her own smile as she held the bucket close to her chest as if for protection. Lance however, was already on the floor, clutching his stomach and laughing his ass off.“I just wanted to see if you were immune to Holy water…” Mary said innocently.“And what if I wasn’t?” I glared at her through dripping eyelashes.“Well, it was only 2% Holy water, so I’m pretty sure you were fine.” She offered.“Are you fucking kidding me!” I yelled and it just made everyone laugh that much harder. “
Chapter 35: The Final DecisionAnaya’s P.O.V:“Anna?”I lifted my lashes to watch Lance enter the room. His face was set in a frown causing lines to appear on his forehead. Even so, he looked stunning. Black jeans and a blue t-shirt with long sleeves, it threw the gold of his eyes into sharp focus. His hair fell messily on his forehead, indicating that he had been running his hands through them a lot.“Hey…” I whispered, too tired to sit up.Lance crossed the distance from the doorway to our bed in a few long strides. He sat beside me and took my hand in his, his long fingers wrapping around my wrist to measure my pulse. “How are you feeling? Your pulse seems stronger.”“Better. I should’ve called, I’m sorry. You came back early for me.” The sun was still shining, which means he couldn’t have been gone that long. And with the pres
Chapter 34: HomeAnaya’s P.O.V:I don’t know which direction I was running in, but I knew that I hadn’t gotten very far. The groaning sounds of those red eyed creatures were all around me. Maybe they were everywhere; I couldn’t tell. I was too busy trying to prevent my heart from bursting out of my chest and to stay on my feet.I was never this comfortable in heels but today I was glad I had worn them because it kept my feet well above the sharp ground. I came to a sudden halt when the red light emitting from the pendant grew brighter.“What the-“It was a good thing that I stopped, because the ground ended only two feet in front of me.“A cliff?” I asked myself as I tried to look at what was down below. But it looked more like the road ahead had been broken by something heavy. Small shards of the black rock lay scattered on the ground but I couldn’t see
Chapter 33: A MiracleAntony’s P.O.V:“It’s a miracle!” The healer exclaimed while inspecting Lance’s perfectly healed shoulder. “I’ve never seen such a severe wound heal so quickly! But, how is this even possible?”“Let’s not get into any details for now, Hanshaw.” I smiled politely at the older man. “Lance is better now, that’s all that matters. But, thank you for all your help.”“It’s my duty, Your Highness.” Hanshaw bowed his head before was on his way out of Lance’s room.We were currently at Sanctium, a dimension that was inhabited my all supernatural creatures. It’s a sanctuary for every supernatural creature ever born, without human influence. And it’s also the place where most of the Royalty resides. And I had to thank the Gods that the person I had wanted to contact was at Sanctium when
Chapter 32: ShadowlandAnaya’s P.O.V:Black.That was all I saw no matter where I turned; no matter how many times I blinked my eyes. It was as if I had been shoved into a room that had all the lights switched off. Except, this wasn’t a closed room. It was open space, open enough that I could feel an icy wind blowing against my skin. It’s said that when you lose one of your senses, all the others become heightened, but they couldn’t be more wrong.Other than the chill in the air, all I could feel was panic. Where was I? Why couldn’t I see? Was this really Shadowland? The great thing about Shadowland is that no one, mortal or immortal, has ever come out of it, alive or dead.Melinda’s voice rang in my ears and with it came a sense of hopelessness like I’ve never felt before. I felt tears stream down my cheeks as I swung my hands around wildly, trying
Chapter 31: Into the Black HoleAnaya’s P.O.V:Everything happened in an eerily slow motion.I watched Lance fall to the floor on his knees in front of me. My father let go of the sword he was holding and backed up, just as shocked as everyone was all around us. The sword was stuck a few inches below Lance’s shoulder, almost halfway down to his chest. For a few agonizing seconds, nothing happened, and then…I watched his shoulder tear in half, blood vessels and nerves snapping in half and his arm sagged to one side as blood erupted from the torn part of his body.“Lance!” Several people screamed at once, but I saw his body start to fall to the floor. I don’t know how I unfroze myself, but I was reaching for Lance before I knew it.I was able to grab on to Lance’s uninjured hand, but then Melinda was there beside me, holding Lance upright and pulling the sword out of his wou
Chapter 30: Inevitable Anaya’s P.O.V:“Daddy?” It was barely a whisper.Just like I’d seen him in the changing room, he looked older, ten years older. His once brown hair was now filled with grey highlights and his skin was wrinkled near his eyes, his mouth and his forehead. But his eyes were still the same green orbs. Except, there was no emotion in them at all. It was like looking into the eyes of a dead man. That glint in his eyes was enough to tell me that he was no longer the father I knew and loved. He was no longer the man who kissed my mother goodbye when he went out for work. He was no longer the father who’d taught me to dance while standing on his feet in the middle of the living room. No, instead he now stood in front of me with a sword in each hand, ready to fight the person that I had fallen in love with.“You’re breaking protocol, hunter.” Lance’
Chapter 29: The EventAnaya’s P.O.V:I had already known that Lance would look breathtaking today; after all, it was his party. But no matter how prepared I’d thought I was for full impact, it was nothing compared to the real impact I got when he entered the room.He was wearing all black, from jacket to pants to shirt and even shoes; the only prominent feature that stood out was his pure gold tie and his topaz eyes. His hair was gelled back to give a sleek look and it brought attention to his square jaw and sharp nose. I’m not really a fan of men with gelled back hair but on Lance, it looked pure heavenly.“Wow!” We both said at the same time.He shook his head. “There’s nothing special about me, Anna. But tonight, every woman in the part will be jealous of you.”Rather than pleasing, that compliment was rather horrifying. “I don’t want to stand ou
Chapter 28: TransformationAnaya’s P.O.V:“Did you find anything?” I asked hesitantly the next morning as Lance stood in front of a large rack of suits in varying colors.“We found the woman who’d held me up, but no sign of your father.” Lance told me. “We’re trying our best to find something, but it seems like the work of a professional. No DNA traces, no fingerprints, nothing. If it weren’t for the footprints on the floor, we’d have thought there wasn’t anyone there at all.”“I see…”Honestly, I was confused as fuck. Why was my father surfacing after ten whole years? If he was alive, why didn’t he come back? Is he associating with the mafia or something?“Come to think about it, the only people I’ve seen to be that clean about something are hunters.” Lance muttered to himself, almost like an a
