Chapter 2: A Second Too Late

Anaya's P.O.V:

Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. BEEP. BEEP!!!

SLAM!

The door banged open at the exact instant I shut off my alarm clock.

"Honey, if you're trying to wake up the entire neighborhood, I think you've already succeeded."

"Five more minutes mom..." I groaned from under my blanket. Soon found it flying off of me to land on the floor.

"Say that to your new boss." Mom put her hands on her hips to emphasize her point.

"Mooooom! Why did you remove my blanket? I'm not five!" I whined, the cold morning air making me shiver as goose bumps danced on my skin, but being the stubborn, lazy person that I am, I simply stayed put.

"Yes, you're not. You're 25 and you know very well that it takes over an hour to reach your new office!" She said sternly. "Up. Now!"

"I'm up! I'm up!" I sat up in bed, rubbing the sleep from my eyes. Twenty-five or not, my mom is still the boss of the house.

"Good. Get ready. I'm making breakfast." With that, she flipped her dark brown hair over her shoulders and walked out of the room.

Does she have to be this dramatic at six in the morning?

I sighed, rubbing the sleep from my eyes. It was past four o' clock when I went to bed last night, or should I say this morning. I’d hardly had two hours of sleep. But I can't waste time on sleep today. I have a hunch I'll be working my ass off this week at my new office. Any mistakes and I'm fired.

Sometimes, I really need to know when to stop. Antony had merely asked for a favor, to work at his brother’s office for the remaining of my term. If I couldn't do it then I can go back to working with him any time I wanted to and he’d even renew my term for another 3 years. I should have refused but the idea of taking on a challenge with Lancelot Eustis was just too tempting. The pay's pretty high too. But most of all, it was Lancelot's I-am-God's-most-prized-creation attitude that got me into this mess and I'm not the kind of person who gets scared of the big bad wolf.

I took a quick shower and dressed in a blue pencil skirt and jacket with a white shirt underneath. Pulled my hair into a neat bun on top of my head and put on my glasses. Applying a tiny bit of eyeliner and lip-gloss, I checked my reflection in the mirror one last time before leaving the room. Mom was making me breakfast when I reached the kitchen.

"Mom ", I called out to her."I'm leaving."

"Here's your breakfast honey," she handed me a lunch box. "I made your favorite sandwiches. Eat them on your way and I’ve packed salad for lunch, separate dressing."

"Thanks mom, I love you. Bye." I gave her a hug before leaving for Reefwood HQ.

The bus ride took an hour, which gave me enough time to go over and compare everything Antony had told me about his brother and what I'd gathered from the net, while snacking on my mom's delicious turkey salad sandwiches. The difference was humongous.

What the tabloids said was that Lancelot Eustis had it all easy. He was never in office the entire day, was always seen with a different woman, he was a cheater, a heart breaker, but no matter how bad the break ups, none of his ex's said a single bad word about him.

On the other hand, Antony had told me that he was a hardworking man who didn't want people knowing that he was talented; he came across as a spoilt rich playboy because he had commitment problems and that he was a genuinely nice person.

I could play eenie-meenie-miney-mo here but since I've known Antony for over three years, I decided to trust his advice.

But Lancelot Eustis on the other hand, other than being Godly handsome with soft, shiny black hair and golden eyes similar to a topaz, had an air of power around him that could intimidate the Angel's themselves. But at the same time, there was no denying the fact that he was also extremely arrogant. I sighed. I have to steer clear of him before my infatuation grows. I'm his secretary and I plan on keeping it completely professional if I am to survive a single day.

I got off at my stop and decided to cover the short distance walking on foot. Since I wore wedges, walking was a bit easier. I checked my watch before entering the building. Punched in my card and took the elevator to the 10th floor.

"Hey! Hold up." I stopped the elevator doors and smiled as another person entered the elevator on the third floor. A man with light brown hair and green eyes in the usual staff attire, carrying a coffee mug in his hands.

"Here," he handed over the steaming cup of espresso to me. "Boss has this every morning. Gets really cranky without it. Mr. Eustis asked me to inform you."

"Mr. Eustis?" I raised an eyebrow at him.

"Antony." He corrected with a dimpled smile.

"Thank you, Mr. Trevor." I read his nametag. "And don't worry; I'll prepare it myself from tomorrow onwards."

"Happy to help, Ms. Johnson." He exited on the ninth floor.

I stepped out of the elevator on the 10th, placed my purse on my desk, took out the organizer in one hand and used it as a tray for the coffee, adjusted my jacket with my free hand, took a deep breath...and opened the cabin door...only to nearly have a heart attack.

"Ah, Ms. Johnson. You seem to be a second too late for work." He smirked, leaning over his desk, palms on either side of a half-naked woman underneath him.

I tried my hardest to keep my poker face on. I'm a professional and I've seen worse. I would

not be fazed. "Actually Sir, I'm two minutes and three seconds early. You're clock is approximately four minutes and twenty nine seconds faster than standard."

His smile vanished and he pushed away from the woman, who got up and fixed herself as if I hadn't just walked in on her and my boss, going at it at eight in the morning, on top of my boss’s working desk…, which I’ll now have to disinfect. My boss on the other hand, was currently on his iPhone, checking for the correct timing.

"Looks like you get to keep your job for today, Ms. Johnson. Now," he looked at the woman who was now standing on her feet by his desk, not a hair out of place.

"I'll leave you to your work then," she smiled seductively at him, making me shudder inwardly. "Call me when you're free." With that, she glided her way out of the room, but not before pinning me with her murderous gaze.

"You actually counted the timing?" He asked, incredulously.

"I would have corrected it if the clock weren't so high." I answered truthfully. “Here’s your coffee, Sir."

He gave me a piercing look, which had me freezing on my spot. Did he think I'd poison him or was he just startled? I didn't have to ponder that long for the answer since he took the mug away from me at that instant.

"Sir, if you tell me what your plans for the day are, then I ca-"

"Oh, I'm not going to need any planning, Ms. Johnson. But I do have some for you." He smirked, cutting me off as I took out the organizer. I was beginning to learn that his face, as Godly as ever, was just as mask for the Devil underneath. "Are you ready for it?"

"Yes Sir." I said firmly. I will not bend like all the others have before. If he thinks a little work will scare me, he doesn't know me yet.

But what was also running through my head at that instant was… I should have trusted the tabloids.

He'd given me work alright, and I wasn't complaining about it at all, but he purposely kept calling me out to do meaningless chores so I get delayed from the actual work at hand. For example, I'd been working on compiling data in a recent merger Reefwood had undergone with Glasgow Internationals, but he constantly kept calling me in his cabin to fetch files for him which simply kept piling up on his desk. Not to mention that the files he asked for were kept in places too difficult to find."Ms. Johnson."And there we go again.I gathered the Glasgow files in my hand as soon as the printer released the final page; stapled them together and put the whole thing into a file and took it

So once again, I had to get up at 4 in the morning despite having reached home at 12.30am, dress within seconds and have breakfast on the bus, reach Ms. McKinley's office by 8.30am, only to find out that I'd have to wait till 10.30 to meet her. Apparently, she isn't a morning person.Disappointed and a bit furious at myself for not having researched her better, or at least called her office, I decided to wait two hours and try my hardest to stay awake by the end of it. Then again, why hadn't I researched her properly? It's very unlike me. I always stay prepared for all kinds of circumstances. Oh, yeah! Guess I was busy loathing Mr. Manwhore Eustis who had happily dumped all his shit on me and then gone his merry way banging some poor woman who doesn't even kno

I'll probably never admit it to her face but she's indeed a very efficient Secretary. But this meeting cannot include her."Ms. Johnson, you won't be required for this meeting. Please wait outside and shut the door behind you." I told her sternly. At first, she looked stunned, but then she nodded her head and went outside the room, closing the door shut behind her. It was only then that the viper spoke."My, my Lancelot." Trevina angled her head to one side, blonde hair sliding over her shoulders like liquid silk. "I didn't expect

This was my favorite place in all of New York, not just because the booze was cheap, but they also serve the best chili in the world.I could easily spot Marissa’s flaming red hair right from the entrance. Her natural hair color was the palest of blonde’s and it tended to make her face look paler too, so she dies it a flaming red to look more vibrant and quite frankly, it matches her personality pretty well.&

Chapter 7: Jealousy and revengeAnaya’s P.O.V:It was two days after Lancelot had left with Antony that Trevina called to get an update on him. To say that she was furious to find him gone would be an understatement.“He went without me? How could he? Tell him to call me as soon as he gets back!” Were her exact words and her tone had made me want to dig up the floor and burrow my head in it. How did Lancelot tolerate her for six years?I was kinda worried that she might just quit even before the contract has been made, but also, I felt weirdly relieved that she might not be working for us anymore. But honestly, the only reason I could feel relieved for her leaving would be because she was Lance’s ex and that she was drop dead gorgeous and Lance just might get back together with her if given the chance...which all led back to me being jealous of her relationship with my Boss…which I had no re

Today was the final day of the one-week deadline he had placed on me and I’d been extra careful to reach office ten minutes before time. But I hadn’t exactly expected Lancelot Eustis to look this exhausted and worried. His shirt, which was the same he’d been wearing last night when I left him, was unbuttoned halfway down his chest, revealing porcelain white skin with a few scattered hair. His hair was in a disarray as if he’d run his hands through them multiple times. But despite that, he still managed to look drop dead gorgeous and I could not be more envious for it. If only I could have that sexy bed hair...But most of all, his cabin looked like a tornado had passed through here. “Did a thief break in?” I asked, worried that that just mi

Since this was Lancelot Eustis, I was pretty sure that he would be back before sundown and barking orders till midnight. I was already looking for an apartment around town where I could stay so I didn’t have to spend hours on travel every day. So far I’ve had no luck and the offers I’ve got so far are far too expensive. I’m hoping there will be some place I can stay that won’t suck me dry.“Let’s go, Ms. Johnson. We’re getting late.” Lancelot said from in front of the elevator.I picked up my bag and dashed after him, reaching just in time for the elevator door to ding open. I’d nearly made it to the exit to the Hospital when I heard someone calling my name. Lance however, was already on the floor, clutching his stomach and laughing his ass off.“I just wanted to see if you were immune to Holy water…” Mary said innocently.“And what if I wasn’t?” I glared at her through dripping eyelashes.“Well, it was only 2% Holy water, so I’m pretty sure you were fine.” She offered.“Are you fucking kidding me!” I yelled and it just made everyone laugh that much harder. “

His once brown hair was now filled with grey highlights and his skin was wrinkled near his eyes, his mouth and his forehead. But his eyes were still the same green orbs. Except, there was no emotion in them at all. It was like looking into the eyes of a dead man. That glint in his eyes was enough to tell me that he was no longer the father I knew and loved. He was no longer the man who kissed my mother goodbye when he went out for work. He was no longer the father who’d taught me to dance while standing on his feet in the middle of the living room. No, instead he now stood in front of me with a sword in each hand, ready to fight the person that I had fallen in love with.“You’re breaking protocol, hunter.” Lance’

But no matter how prepared I’d thought I was for full impact, it was nothing compared to the real impact I got when he entered the room.He was wearing all black, from jacket to pants to shirt and even shoes; the only prominent feature that stood out was his pure gold tie and his topaz eyes. His hair was gelled back to give a sleek look and it brought attention to his square jaw and sharp nose. I’m not really a fan of men with gelled back hair but on Lance, it looked pure heavenly.“Wow!” We both said at the same time.He shook his head. “There’s nothing special about me, Anna. But tonight, every woman in the part will be jealous of you.”Rather than pleasing, that compliment was rather horrifying. “I don’t want to stand ou

No DNA traces, no fingerprints, nothing. If it weren’t for the footprints on the floor, we’d have thought there wasn’t anyone there at all.”“I see…”Honestly, I was confused as fuck. Why was my father surfacing after ten whole years? If he was alive, why didn’t he come back?
