Chapter Three

“Hello my heartbeat. I can’t seem to get you out of my mind because you are the soul that powers my existence.” Claudine laughed at his words sensationally.

It was 1am on a Saturday morning. Ara was surprised she had picked the call on the second ring. It had taken him all the confidence he could muster to place the call in anticipation of how their first phone conversation was going to turnout. The words he had just told her were as true as the blue of the sky because Claudine was the only happiness in his life keeping his mind off the mysterious incidence of the past two days.

“So it took you two full days to find the courage to call me?” Claudine asked. “No Claud, it has nothing to do with my confidence but everything to do with me being nervous with everything that has to do with you. I guess it is love,” Ara replied. There was a short silence on the other side of the line before she finally said, “I love your choice of words as long as they don’t give birth to equations.” Ara couldn’t hold back his laughter.

“What are you doing awake at this time of the day?” he inquired. “One of this day’s I am going to drop dead and the autopsy report is going to be death due to social network addiction,” she replied and they both laughed.

A brief silence ensued and he took the opportunity to ask her a question. “Are you seeing anyone currently?” She was silent for some few seconds before she replied, ‘No.’ Ara felt relieved by her answer “That sounds like a lie,” he said. She laughed before she replied, “Ara I have a lot of male pals but I have never been in a relationship and currently I don’t have a boyfriend.” He pondered for some seconds before he finally said, “So who am I to you?” Claudine deliberated for some seconds “That’s up to you to help me find out because after you sent me your equations I liked you and now with every passing moment of this conversation I like you more. Impress me more and I could be where you want me to be. It all depends on how far you are willing to go to conquer my heart,” she replied in a flirtatious tone.

“I will do my best to win your heart, body and soul Claud,” Ara said. “I guess we will let time be the judge of that,” she replied. He took his time before he asked her his next question, “If you had the power to view the future, what will you do?” After what seemed like eternity she said, “Life will be quite boring if we knew the future because we will end up making unnecessary alterations to prevent some shortcomings in our lives from materializing and by so doing upset the balance of destiny and nature. Ara a mind that knows the future will never be at peace.”

Ara never doubted a word of what she had just said but out of curiosity he asked, “Whoever knows the future could play God so why pass up such an opportunity when curiosity is part of human nature and every great invention is built on curiosity?” Claudine was silent again for some few seconds before she delivered a reply someone older than her age would be expected to deliver, “There are two sides to everything, a negative and a positive. Positive curiosities is remaining within the confine of reality yet having hope while negative curiosity is imposing your philosophy on destiny no matter the consequences of your actions. A negative curiosity is powered by greed and a complete lack of respect for fate. What I had just told you were the words of the philosopher in me but coming back to religion, it’s a sin to feel that you are the ultimate controller of your destiny because a supernatural force drive’s everyone and everything on earth. We are all powered by a divine God that is why we have souls that we can’t see but we know deep inside that it is the impulse that keeps us alive and once it abandons our bodies we are nothing but lifeless piece of decaying matter.”

After listening to Claudine attentively he said, “Please Claudine Douglas would you accept me as your husband so that you can teach our kids philosophy and religion?” They both laughed. Finally he has met his match in the game of minds and funnily enough it had turned out to be the girl he was having a crush on. If you wanted to keep your conversations with a girl on a personal level very interesting you had to know your timing and when to make an exit before the lady on the other end of the line got bored with you. “I know you are probably exhausted and tired of this boring guy so I will take my technological leave for now and let the mother of my unborn kids get some rest,” Ara said to Claudine who laughed sensationally before she replied, “You are an interesting prospect Ara. It’s a pity we have to reschedule our conversation to the near future.”

“Good night Claudine Douglas and dream of nothing but you and me,” Ara said. “I will try that and let you know if it works. Call me later,” she replied. “I will my heart beat,” he said before ending the call. After ending the call, Ara closed his eyes and tried recalling every detail of the interesting conversation they just had. Slowly he drifted to sleep.
