It was the light filtering through her eyelids that eventually roused Thalia from the thick molasses of sleep that held her tight. Trying to crawl out of that safe and comforting darkness was like crawling through glue and there were a few times she succumbed to that protective embrace and sunk back under its waves. Eventually, pushing through became easier and Thalia felt the world around slowly slip back into place.

For a few moments the young woman thought she was still in her cell, tucked away underground like a condemned criminal only to see the light of day when she was required to serve. Then the memories started to return to her.

The car journey. Marcus negotiating with the blonde haired woman. Rafi throwing her into the back of the car. Ms Thorton drugging her.

The events of that morning crashed down like ice cold water, sobering her immediately. She gasped as if breathing for the first time and shot up, espresso brown eyes wide and frantically taking in the room around her, unable to find any familiarity in her surroundings.

Sunlight poured in as buttery soft light through large arched windows, caressing her bare legs like a friendly cat. The room walls were a delicate magnolia colour with a large gold framed mirror hanging between two sconces and above what appeared to be a vanity made of rich dark wood and fashioned into a modern design. Matching bedside tables sat on either side of the large ottoman bed where Thalia found herself, cream sheets and pillowcases glowing in the lazy sunlight as if they were white clouds on a summer's day.

It was the night slip that Thalia noticed last. Gone were her threadbare sweater and dirty leggings. Now, a deep, rich red satin slip hugged her body, the material buttery against her skin. Despite its delicate appearance, it seemed to cover her generously feminine hips and ample breasts that had somehow survived the years of malnutrition even if the rest of her had been stripped of any body fat.

Just as she was moving to slip off the bed, the door that Thalia hadn't noticed before opened, Ms Thorton's stern presence entering the room.

"Oh good, you're awake. I was starting to worry I had given you too much of the sedative." The blonde woman spoke, forgoing any greetings.

"Where am I?" Thalia asked, cautiously watching the other occupant of the room in case she tried to drug her again.

"You're in your new home for the foreseeable future." Ms Thorton answered vaguely. "Your presence has been requested. I suggest you make yourself presentable. There is a bathroom through that door where you will find all you need to get cleaned up."

"What about my clothes?" The young brunette asked, her slim dark eyebrows pinching together in confusion. Surely she couldn't be expected to go anywhere just dressed in a nightgown!

"The clothes you arrived in, if they can be called that, have been disposed of and an appropriate outfit will be provided." Ms Thorton replied, her voice not hiding any of the impatience she was feeling from all the questions. "Now enough of the questions. Please hurry and clean up otherwise I will have to get someone to assist you and I assure you, you won't like that."

Thalia understood the threat clearly and didn't hang around to find out how it would be carried out. She scurried to the door that the blonde woman had pointed to, blindly letting herself into the bathroom and collapsing against the door as it shut.

If Thalia hadn't been so terrified, she might have appreciated the luxurious decor of the bathroom with its walk in shower that took up one call and the club foot bath that could fit a whole family in it. Even the tiles oozed grandness, with its sandy marbled effect covering every inch of the walls and floor. Giant white towels that looked as fluffy as clouds were hung neatly on a wall rack and robes hung next to them. Two basins sat under the large mirror and warm sunlight filtered in through the frosted windows bathing everything in natural light.

Scrambling to the shower, Thalia was surprised to see Ms Thorton was right. There were a range of shampoos, conditioners, body washes and anything else Thalia could think on the shelves for Thalia to choose from as she washed. Within seconds of the warm water hitting Thalia's trembling body, it ran dark with dirt, grime and even dried blood. Thalia couldn't remember the last time she had been allowed to bathe much less bathe with hot water and the experience was disarming, leaving Thalia feeling like she was in some strange alternative universe. It took three goes with the shampoo before her hair felt clean and the water ran clear but sadly no amount of conditioner was going to fix the dry and split ends.

At least she was clean.

Drying off, Thalia's dark chocolate eyes scrutinised the array of body lotions and face creams sitting neatly around the wash basins almost begging to be used. She declined though. Surely they weren't for her!

Once wrapped in one of the huge robes, Thalia timidly opened the door and peered out. Ms Thorton was now sat in a seat near the window, tapping away on her phone and an outfit had been laid out on the bed.

"Ah good, you're done." Ms Thorton's voice broke the silence like the cracking of a whip. "Hurry and dress. You don't want to keep him waiting."

"Who?" Thalia frowned, taking a nervous step towards the bed.

"Our employer." Ms Thorton replied with a click of her tongue. "Now come along!"

Thalia still felt none the wiser to what was going on but reluctantly forced herself to stand in front of the bed, staring down at the neatly selected bra and underwear and the forest green summer dress. Next to it was a simple chestnut brown belt and fawn coloured cardigan. She hesitated again, well aware that the stern blonde woman sat only feet away. She couldn't help but glance towards the woman, noting she was still on her phone. Suspecting she wouldn't have time to hide in the bathroom again, she reluctantly pulled on the clothes, finishing it with a pair of flats the same colour at the belt.

"About time." Ms Thorton huffed, standing up abruptly and putting her phone away in a jacket pocket. "Now, let's have a look at you."

She was in no way gentle as she turned the young brunette to look at her, critical blue eyes running over Thalia's appearance like a razor blade. Once her gaze made it to Thalia's hair, she frowned.

"Good grief! When was the last time your hair was cut? It looks like a dead animal!" Ms Thorton snapped, making Thalia blush in shame. "No matter. We will deal with that later. For now, we will put it up so it's out of the way."

Thalia had no time to react as Ms Thorton spun on her heel and strutted over the dresser, digging though the draws before returning with a hair tie. Again, she was in no way gentle as she gathered Thalia's dark hair into a bun and secured it in place. It was thick and messy, but it seemed to satisfy Ms Thorton because she didn't redo it much to Thalia's relief.

With few words exchanged, Thalia quickly found herself exiting the room and stepping into a grand looking hallway with dark grey, muted red and cream pillars and chandeliers evenly spaced along the ceiling. The walls themselves were white, divided by white doors with gold painted trim and luscious plants on top of end tables. The whole space was busy but oozed wealth. Thalia hadn't seen anything like it. Her parents were wealthy thanks to careful business decisions and coming from wealthy backgrounds, but this place made her parents look like paupers.

Ms Thorton was an enigma as well, although not one Thalia wanted to solve. The blonde woman had to be in her forties and her accent wasn't one Thalia had heard before. Despite the sharpness of her tone, Ms Thorton's accent was strong and rounded making Thalia think of green fields and quaint British summers. Then there was her strength. She wasn't a werewolf as Thalia hadn't sensed a wolf, yet she was indeed strong, having taken on Thalia with just one hand!

Finally, Thalia found herself being led down a grand staircase. She struggled to keep up with Ms Thorton who seemed capable of running a marathon in her Louis Vuitton heels or perhaps it was because the she-wolf hadn't eaten in goddess knows long and she was running on fumes just to stay on her feet. It did surprise her that she was just allowed to follow Ms Thorton without any escorts, but it quickly occurred to her, as they came to the bottom of the stairs, that she had no idea where they were or where the exits were.

The journey through the gigantic property finally came to an end outside a set of double doors that rose up almost to the ceiling. Unlike the rest of the doors, these were made of dark wood and had intricate designs hand carved into them. The handles appeared to be made of gold and glowed proudly in the buttery sunlight.

Ms Thorton gave a swift knock, turning to scrutinised Thalia's appearance once more as she waited for a response. The look was enough to make Thalia feel unsettled, and her pulse throbbed in her neck as she imagined all the terrible things waiting for her behind those doors. What had Lars sold her into exactly?

Before she could sink down that dark tunnel of thought, a muffled voice from the other side of the door called out, giving permission to enter before Ms Thorton grabbed the handles and pushed the giant doors open.

The large doors pushed open slowly, a soft whistle accompanying the movement as soft early spring air raced to escape through the opening. A delicate spicy scent mingled with the light scent of flowers, coming forth to wrap itself around Thalia like a loved one, coaxing her forward on wobbly legs to enter the room after Ms Thorton. Her heart thrummed in her chest like a caged bird making her lungs ache. The room appeared to be much like what Thalia had seen of the property. Pale vanilla sunlight poured in through several tall but narrow windows as navy blue curtains billowed on the breeze that came through the open panes. The patterned marble floor reflected the lazy sunlight softly. The main colour was a soft milky coffee colour with thin rectangles of black bordering strips of cream to create an intricate Rosetta pattern spreading from wall to wall, corner to corner. The room was not lacking in furniture or decor. Cream walls were bordered by patterned trims at the ceiling and floo

Thalia had been expecting to be sent back to her room and confined there until her dinner with Dante Connaught. If not that then at least she would be put to work cleaning or whatever it was that was needed from her as a slave. Yet neither scenario occurred.Instead, Thalia was led to another part of the strange residence where a tall, young woman with sharp features and skin as pale as snow worked silently to cut and tame the young she-wolf's thick dark hair. This and the shaping of Thalia's eyebrows were accompanied by a manicure minus any polish while Ms Thorton looked on, making sure everything was done exactly how she wanted it. Now Thalia's hair no longer sat in a mangled and damaged mess down to her hips. Instead, the colours of obsidian, espresso and molasses felt in silky waves over her shoulders, the ends curling ever so slightly just below her shoulder blades which protruded unhealthily. Thalia watched silently from her perch on the giant bed where her day had started as

At first Thalia thought she had misheard her master, then she thought perhaps she was imagining it. Thalia couldn't remember the last time she was allowed to go outside or shift. Lars either didn't like or didn't care to let Thalia out. Thalia had heard that the less a wolf shifted, the weaker they became but Thalia wasn't sure if that was true. She had endured years of torture and still healed quickly which sadly meant she was subjected to another beating. "A run?" Thalia's voice was shy and hesitant, her eyes flicking up to gage Dante's mood only to find him observing her calmly. “Yes.” Dante nodded with a smile. “Doctor McKinley did mention it in his notes and that it has been sometime since you were last able to let your wolf out. I can only imagine how torturous that must be for you so I would like to rectify it starting tonight.” Thalia was speechless, her eyes wide in shock and mouth agape. The rush of emotions was certainly overwhelming, and she felt the prickling sting i

Thalia only realised now how tired she was, as if Dante mentioning how late it was had drawn Thalia’s exhaustion to the front of her mind. Only a few minutes before she had felt invigorated after finally being able to shift and explore the mystical outside world. Her muscles were sore, but the warm burn wasn’t unpleasant, if anything it felt like home. How long had it been since she had felt that familiar ache from running in her wolven form? Now though, at the mention of going to bed, Thalia’s limbs felt heavy and her eyes scratchy. She caught herself stifling a yawn only for a pink tint to bleed into her cheeks when Dante smiled at her in amusement. “Come, I’ll escort you to your room.” Dante rested a large hand gently between the petite female shoulder blades, guiding her to another door, one she hadn’t noticed before. How many doors did this place have? “Thank you.” Thalia nodded, letting her hospitable master guide her through the door. The hallway that stretched out before t

Thalia felt her heart leap into her mouth as Jennifer continued to stare her down. The lessons she had been taught as a pup came back to her like a reflex. All pups were taught from an early age to be careful not to expose who they were truly to humans. Of course, there were some who knew of the supernatural species that existed but there was an agreement as old as time to keep the humans in the dark as much as possible to protect them from the dangers that came with the supernatural world. "Relax," Jennifer broke the silence first, letting out a humourless laugh. "Mr Connaught tells me everything." "Oh Jesus…" Svetlana rolled her eyes. "Your delusions are getting worse by the day. He told all of us." "But he told me first!" Jennifer argued, long slender fingers coming to play with her ice cream blonde hair before flicking it over her shoulder. “We talk all the time.”

Even though Thalia knew Priyanka wouldn't be at dinner that evening, she couldn't stop the worry gnawing in her gut. The other girls seemed unfazed by the absence of their friend and were happily chatting to each other. Even Jennifer had made an appearance and seemed in a much better mood even if she kept her distance from Thalia. However, when almost a week had passed and Priyanka still hadn't been seen by any of the girls, Thalia knew something was going on. Whenever Thalia questioned Ms Thorton or Dante, they had merely changed the subject or made some vague excuses. Dante was certainly more convincing than his assistant. It seemed that he just had to utter the words don't worry about it. She is fine and Thalia would forget about the matter until late that evening and when there was no one to ask.Thalia was also no closer to working out anything about her master or this strange place he called a home. Six weeks later Thalia groaned as she pushed her hair out of her face, her mouth still watering as she blindly fumbled for the handle on the toilet. She had heard morning sickness could be a bitch, but she was now learning just how much of a bitch it really could be. It had only been six weeks since the night the small life inside her womb was conceived and yet it still felt like a strange dream. The exact details of that night were hazy in her mind, but Thalia remembered being unable to control herself as she agreed to Dante’s surprising request. In reality it wasn’t that strange. Women all over the world acted as a surrogate for other people all the time but to have six women be surrogates for one person was unheard of. Also, Thalia couldn’t help but shake the feeling that, while she hadn’t been forced to agree, she certainly had been coerced in some way which really wasn’t any better. Sink

Doctor McKinley’s words stuck with Thalia like a bad memory well after her appointment was done. She had remained preoccupied and lost in thought for the rest of the day, too stunned to think clearly. The past few months had been crazy, and Thalia was starting to wonder if it was her that was going mad and hallucinating after years of abuse or if this was all real and she was pregnant with a demon’s baby.“Thalia?” Dante’s deep voice cut into the maelstrom of thoughts going through Thalia’s mind. “Is everything okay?”“Hm?” She glanced up in a daze, taking in her surroundings as her espresso brown eyes cleared. “Sorry, I was just thinking.”She had been on autopilot when Ms Thorton had come to collect her for her dinner date with Dante. Fourteen years laterThe sun had long since set but the air was still sticky and thick with summer heat. The humidity had been building for days and now the low rumble of brontide echoed through the darkness with its promise of cooler temperatures to come. Despite the impending storm, the group of friends were still playing under the glow of the light coming from the giant packhouse. Nearly every window and door were open to let in fresh air in hopes of getting a cool breeze. Two males and two females pranced barefoot over the manicured grass as their laughter echoed and bounced against the fortress of trees that flanked the packhouse estate. In just a few days, the four young wolves would be travelling to the nearby facility to finish their training as warriors. Their excitement was palpable and was what spurred their excitable moods. While three would likely go on to become warriors, the fourth had had her destiny mapped out for her from the moment she was conceived. The future Que

By the time the weather had turned and the first storms off the North Sea began to batter the land, the house was ready to welcome not just Kade and Thalia but two little pups as well. Thalia had been lucky that she hadn’t struggled too much with the pregnancy thus far but, the two weeks leading up to her due date had been hard work. Her stomach and ankles seemed to be in a competition to see which could swell the most while her lower back and hips hurt constantly to the point that she struggled to sleep. In the end she was relegated to bed rest by Simone while Kade insisted on making sure everything else was done. For Thalia it had been torture but being pregnant with one child was never easy. Being pregnant two twins was doubly hard on the body."I thought you were given strict orders to stay in bed." Kade spoke up when he came in that evening to find Thalia pacing the living room, his playful smirk disappearing when he saw his mate’s frantic face. "Thalia?" "My waters broke." Tha

One month laterAdapting to life in a pack again, especially one that Thalia had never been a part of before, was a lot easier than she thought it would be. True to everything Kade, Daniel and Eva told her, the pack had welcomed her with open arms and didn't once cast her a judging look or a pitying glance when they learned of what she had endured. They even seemed okay with the fact her children weren't Kade's offspring or that they had demon blood in them. The pack regarded them as pups and asked her the usual questions a mothers-to-be endured. The Indian summer brought cooler nights but sun drenched days which the pack's pups were keen to enjoy by running through sprinklers or playing in the long grass that filled the meadows around them. The Pack's doctor, a woman by the name of Simone, insisted on regular check ups to make sure Thalia was doing okay and ensure there were no complications. Between that and spending time with Eva, Thalia had very little time to dwell. In the even

Kade let Thalia storm away. Arguing with her right now wasn't going to fix the hurt and the betrayal. He very much doubted that Thalia meant what she said and Kade was going to make sure that when the time came, she would be able to reach out to her family and not regret turning her back on those who had been innocently caught up in their alpha's web of lies. "She's a fiery one." Lucien's voice broke the silence. "The moon goddess chose wisely." "We shall see if Thalia agrees with you in time." Kade replied, turning to face the angel. "I'm not convinced that the local council of Alphas will be much use here. Do you think you could find out who helped Castor kidnap the girls? If any of Thalia's brothers were involved, then I don't want the Alpha title being passed to them.""Agreed." Lucien nodded. “Thalia, are you sure this is a good idea?” Kade asked for what felt like the hundredth time since Thalia had announced she wanted to travel to Greece. The whole thing sounded like an awful idea, but Kade had seen the resolute hardness in his mate’s eyes. She would not be able to move on from these until she saw the truth for herself. It didn’t matter that what she would find would potentially hurt her beyond repair. She had made up her mind and all Kade could do was be there for her. Still, it didn’t hurt to try and get her to stop and think this through a little more. The beta watched from his seat on the edge of their bed as Thalia packed a few essentials for her trip. Night had descended only an hour before, but the air was still heavy with summer heat and the tiny flames hovering over several candles quivered whenever the warm breeze rolled in through the doors that led onto a balcony. Given everything she had been through, Thalia ought to be resting but she wouldn’t listen, n

It had only been a week since Dante had been killed and his plans to destroy the world had come to an end and yet that all seemed like a lifetime ago now that Thalia was sat in the sunroom of Lucien’s north England manor, a warm breeze danced lazily through the large French doors that open out onto the sprawling grounds. Everything was so green and luscious. It was a vast difference from the sun baked earth and salty air Thalia had grown up with. They had left Prague once Priyanka had given birth and before the local authorities caught up with them. Laila’s brother thankfully was able to use his powers as a police officer to distract the Czech police and the group had slipped away quietly. Thalia hadn’t been surprised when Lucien had managed to transport them back to his manor safely, nor was she surprised by the team of doctors and nurses waiting for them to whisk Priyanka and her premature baby away for medical attention.Thalia didn’t want to trust Lucien’s intentions given his rel

"I don't understand why this is happening." Priyanka whimpered, her eyes wide with fear. "Just breathe," Miriam reassured the distressed woman, brushing her sweat-soaked hair off of her forehead. “Holy shit! What the hell happened in here?” Mully’s voice couldn’t have been any less welcomed as it split through the brittle silence and echoed through the rubble. What had once been a rather generic looking waiting room designed in the same way as a corporate hotel lobby now resembled a bombed out building in some worn-torn country. Mully had seen plenty of scenes like this but none with so much blood and caused by supernatural beings battling it out. The first thing that was clear was that this part of the building was ready to collapse. Thick chunks of concrete and plaster had already begun to fall onto the mess of what appeared to be bodies and the steel framework was completely bent back or hanging like the broken bones on a skeleton. Furniture had been completely decimated and was now strewn across the floor as shards of broken wood and split cushions. Amongst it though was the mildly terrifying form of the fallen-angel and Kade’s broken body. Between them was a pitch blac

Kade prepared for the impact. There was nowhere to go so he readied to feel the demon’s talons slice through his skin. He had the dagger in his hand, ready to plunge it into the heart of the demon. If he was going to die, then he was taking the ugly sonofabitch with him. Yet the searing pain of being impaled on the razor-sharp claws never came. Dante had descended on Kade with all his fury but when he was a hair’s breadth from the were-wolf, something sent the giant beast sailing backwards. Kade watched in confusion as the demon crashed into a wall but not before he took out one of the supporting columns sending chunks of concrete flying like shrapnel. The whole building shuddered violently when the beast hit the wall, cracks spreading across the plaster like fork-lightning from where Dante impacted with the wall. “Kade!”The beta snapped out of his daze, silver eyes snapping to the owner of the voice only to widen. Where Lucien had once stood was a creature similar in size to Dante
