Chapter 9

Author: Glazed Snow
No one welcomed her arrival—they were all trying to push her away.

Wendy found it laughable. Her cold, sharp eyes swept across Lilian, Jessica, and Harry's faces before she yanked her arm out of Stanley's grip.

A faint smile tugged at her lips as she said, "Fine, I'll leave."

'Remember this—it was you who told me to go!'

With that, Wendy turned and walked away.

Soon after, she came back. Tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear, she asked, "Mr. Hawk, do you know why I came to the naturopathy center today?"

Stanley's gaze fell on her flawless, porcelain-like face, her soft peach fuzz catching the light, making her beauty even more striking.

Stanley's expression was cold, and it was clear he didn't care. His voice was harsh and distant. "Wendy, this is getting annoying."

Wendy stepped forward with a dazzling smile.

"I'm here to help you find a naturopath." She pulled a small card out of her pocket and handed it to him. "Here, this is for you."

Stanley looked down at the slightly yellowed card, which looked like something someone might slip through a door crack.

The card read, "Traditional Naturopath – Specializing in ED, premature ejaculation, infertility, and helping you rediscover your manhood. Contact: 138XXXX8888."

Stanley's usually stoic face cracked ever so slightly.

Wendy slipped the card into his suit pocket. "Jessica has a problem. Mr. Hawk, don't you as well? You both should really get yourselves checked out."

She turned and walked away without waiting for a response.

Stanley's hand, hanging by his side, clenched into a fist. This woman always managed to push his buttons.

Jessica broke the silence. "Stanley, let it go. Wendy isn't worth our time."

Lilian nodded. "Right. Why isn't Dr. Ceylan here yet?"

Everyone grew tense at the mention of Dr. Ceylan, who was Jessica's last hope.

Stanley glanced at his watch. The appointment time had passed, but Dr. Ceylan hadn't arrived.

Just then, a nurse walked in. "Mr. Hawk."

Jessica, Harry, and Lilian perked up. "Is Dr. Ceylan here?"

The nurse addressed Stanley. "Dr. Ceylan arrived earlier but has already left."

'What?'

Stanley looked down the hallway but didn't see anyone—only Wendy disappearing around a corner.

Stanley frowned. "I didn't see Dr. Ceylan."

The nurse explained, "Dr. Ceylan came, but decided not to stay."

"Why?" Jessica, Harry, and Lilian's expressions changed instantly. "Why would Dr. Ceylan leave without helping Jessica?"

The nurse apologized, "I'm sorry, but Dr. Ceylan refused to treat Miss Jessica."

Jessica's face went pale. Dr. Ceylan wouldn't treat her? Why?

Their earlier hope was doused like a bucket of cold water. Everyone was stunned.

Jessica lost it. "Why won't Dr. Ceylan treat me? Why?"

Harry and Lilian immediately comforted her. "Jessica, don't get upset. We'll figure something out and bring Dr. Ceylan back. You'll be okay!"

Stanley's sharp features hardened. He stared down the empty hallway, his aura radiating danger.

Outside the hospital, someone called out, "Wendy."

Wendy paused and turned around slowly. It was Lilian, who had followed her out.

Lilian approached her. "Wendy, this is for you."

Wendy glanced down—it was a check for 20,000 dollars.

"Wendy, Mr. Hawk doesn't love you. Stop clinging to him and give him back to your sister. Why can't you let her have him? Just divorce him and take this money to start fresh in the countryside," Lilian said.

Wendy found it absurd. If she hadn't secretly done a DNA test on Lilian and Jessica, she might have believed Jessica was Lilian's biological daughter. Yet, that wasn't the case.

Lilian was only Jessica's stepmother. However, Lilian adored Jessica and not Wendy, her actual daughter.

Wendy knew Lilian was obsessed with Harry, which explained her bias.

Wendy's gaze was calm as she looked at Lilian. She smiled faintly. "So, being Mrs. Hawk is only worth this much to you? Or is that all I'm worth in your eyes?"

Lilian froze, then hurriedly said, "Wendy, I'm your mother, and I'm doing this for your good. You don't belong here…"

'Mother?'

The word sounded foreign, and Wendy laughed softly.

"You already sent me to the countryside once, and now you want to do it again. You really are a great mother!"

Wendy didn't look at Lilian again. She stepped into a taxi and left.

Inside, she sat quietly in the back seat. She retrieved a candy from her bag, unwrapped it, and popped it into her mouth.

The cab driver glanced at her through the rearview mirror. She wore a simple dress, exuding an air of elegance and composure that commanded respect. On closer look, her skin was so pale it seemed translucent, and her figure under the dress looked fragile, as if a gust of wind could knock her over.

The driver, who had a daughter around the same age, smiled kindly. "Young lady, you really like sweets, huh?"

Wendy turned her head slightly, the breeze outside blowing her hair across her face. She smiled softly. "Yeah, a little sweetness makes the bitterness easier to bear."

-

Lilian stood frozen, watching Wendy's taxi leave.

Just then, someone approached. "Mrs. Crone."

Lilian turned to see Ted Whalen, the head of the naturopathy center.

Lilian immediately approached him. "Dr. Whalen, you have so many connections. Can you help us get Dr. Ceylan to treat Jessica?"

Dr. Whalen smiled. "Mrs. Crone, I know Dr. Ceylan personally. I can make the introduction."

Lilian's face lit up. "Really? Thank you so much, Dr. Whalen."

Dr. Whalen's gaze shifted to where Wendy had disappeared. A sly smile tugged at his lips. "Mrs. Crone, was that your daughter who came back from the countryside? She's stunning. For a second, I thought I'd seen an angel."

Lilian's expression turned cold, her earlier excitement fading into icy indifference.

Shaun stood under the shower, water beating down on his shoulders and rolling off the muscles on his back. That was when he heard a knock at the door."Halsey?" he called out.Outside, Sierra's heart skipped. She heard him say Halsey's name, but stayed quiet. If she spoke, it'd ruin everything. She needed Shaun to think it really was Halsey.Shaun didn't suspect anything. This was his bedroom with Halsey, after all. He didn't even know Halsey had brought Sierra here."Come in," he said.Sierra's lips curled into a smile she could barely hold back. She grabbed the doorknob and stepped inside. The room was filled with the clean, steamy scent of soap and water. Shaun was behind the frosted glass, rinsing off.Thinking Halsey had come in, he turned toward the door. "Halsey—"He paused sharply. He couldn't see clearly through the glass, but his gut told him this wasn't her.Sierra's heart raced. She tilted her chin, eager to catch a glimpse of the man everyone called the rising sta

Shaun felt his chest fill up in the best way. No matter how busy he was outside, coming home to his pregnant fiancée was everything. Happiness felt real here. This was all anyone could really want in life.He wrapped his arms around Halsey and rested his big hand on her round belly. "You're almost six months now. This is when it starts getting tough. Try to get to bed earlier, okay? I'll do my best to come home sooner."Tonight, he'd made it back by 8 PM, which wasn't late at all. But usually, he was home around 6 PM, already in the kitchen cooking dinner.Halsey smiled, lips curving up. "You've had a long day, too. Go on upstairs and take a shower.""You're coming with me," Shaun said. She held up her sketch pencil. "Let me just finish this design first, then I'll come up."He looked at her half-done drawing, nodded, and said, "Alright. I'll go ahead and shower first." Then, he headed upstairs.Just then, Jocelyn walked to Halsey, carrying a little bowl. "I brought you som

Sierra looked at the rug. "This is, what, a Biazean carpet? It's so soft. And that chandelier—it had to be imported from Cruiseland, right? It sparkles like a pearl! And this sofa…"Her awe was written all over her face; there was no way to hide it.Halsey tilted her head. "I thought you said your family didn't have much money. How do you know all this stuff?"Sierra froze. She looked up and ran right into Halsey's clear, sharp gaze. Her stomach dropped as she cursed herself. She'd gotten too excited and slipped up! The whole poor-girl backstory she had spun didn't match the way she could recognize luxury items at a glance.Quick on her feet, Sierra forced a smile. "Oh…right. I studied interior design for a while. I saw things like this in magazines, so that's how I recognize them."Halsey curved her lips in a light smile. "I was just asking. No need to get nervous.""Haha, I know," Sierra muttered, trying to cover.Just then, Jocelyn walked in. "Welcome home, Mrs. Lane."Hals

Halsey listened quietly to Zada's whole story before finally saying, "So let me get this straight. The night you got into trouble, Sierra just happened to show up and save you. Then you find out she goes to Anteoch University as well, and you two become besties. Then, you introduced her to me. Kinda feels like a perfect little coincidence, don't you think?"Zada frowned. "What are you saying? You think Sierra saved me on purpose, just to get close?"Halsey raised her brows. "I didn't say that."Zada thought about it, then shook her head. "Come on. You've seen Sierra's situation. Her dad's a gambler who hits her, and her whole family leans on her to make money… She's got it rough. I really think she's just a sweet, unlucky girl. We shouldn't overthink it."Seeing how much Zada trusted Sierra, Halsey let it drop. For Zada, Sierra really had been a lifesaver, so of course, she was grateful.Halsey smiled. "Alright. No more talk about Sierra. Let's get ready for class."Zada nodded

Halsey pulled out her phone and started dialing 911.The big guy glanced at Sierra, and she gave him a quick look, telling him to run.He bolted out the door.A few classmates shouted after him, "What, you scared now? I thought you were so tough you'd stick around for the cops!"But the man was long gone.Everyone rushed over to Halsey instead."Halsey, you were amazing!" one girl said, her voice still shaky."I was so scared I could barely breathe," another admitted. "But you weren't. You stood up to him like it was nothing!"Halsey shook her head, serious as ever. "Listen. When your safety's on the line, fear won't help you. The only thing that works is the law. Always protect yourself with it."Zada grinned and stuck up her thumb. "You're the best!"Sierra was silent, her face filled with frustration. She had put on this whole performance, and somehow it was Halsey who walked away the hero. Everyone was crowded around Halsey, cheering her on. What about Sierra, the suppo

  • The Heartbreak Prescription   Chapter 1029

Sierra had secretly hired a man in his fifties to play her abusive, gambling dad.Her hair was a mess, her clothes tugged and wrinkled in his grip. She put on her best desperate voice. "Let go of me! I just want to stay here and study! I don't wanna ruin my whole life!"The man growled, "What's the point of a girl getting so much education? A woman's real value is getting married and having kids!"Sierra widened her eyes in fear. "What are you trying to do? Are you trying to push me toward those shady guys again? They're all just like you—drunks, gamblers, and abusers! I don't want to meet them!"The man sneered, "Listen, sweetheart, someone's already offered me six grand to marry you! Six thousand bucks! Marry this guy, be a good wife, pop out some boys, and he'll keep the cash rolling in. Then I'll finally live the good life, thanks to you."Tears slid down Sierra's cheeks. "No! I don't want that. I'm your daughter, not some money machine!""Shut it!" he barked. "Come with me r
