At tea parties, noblewomen use their words as weapon. When men plan their schemes, they use the top secrets to either slander or blackmail their targets. In any situations, the bullet to their guns is information. Where could you get that fresh meat? At information guilds. Among the information guilds, the pub that sells cupcakes at night is the best guild, with infinite connections within and outside of the empire. The leader of that guild is the high society playboy, Markus Febrez.
“So what made you visit my dwellings in this time?”
“You have houses at the capital. This aren’t one of them.”
I examined his visage. Sultry lips, deep eyes, and his nose stands proudly on his pinkish skin.
“Would you like to marry me, Markus?”
Markus was red. Ugh, I knew it was stupid.
“Sorry that was a strange thing to ask.”
“W-What has gotten into you? That was sudden.”
“Mother wants me to get married.”
“So, you proposed to me?”
“I just tried it on you. Well, I guess that was embarrassing.”
“That’s right. Don’t go around proposing to random men. I’ll kill you if you do.”
Markus threatened, pouting his lips slightly. How childish.
“Yeah, father. I’m going to follow you. So stop pouting already.”
“I am not pouting! W-well is that all? Did you really came to annoy me?”
That’s right. I never came here to escape from my mother’s mouth.
“I came here to find information about a person.”
“Who? And let me remind you, even if we’ve known each other for years--- You don’t tolerate passion paying. I know. I came here with another fresh meat to trade.”
Markus grabbed a pen and paper, and handed them to me.
“It’s not that I don’t trust you. I just needed your sign for inventory.”
“You found a rat bite?”
“Hmmm. And I’m sure the rat’s still nearby. So who was the unlucky man?”
“Give me the list of all the man in the empire with red streaks on their hair.”
Markus was startled. “Do you have some weird fetish with our hair?”
I sighed. “No. But please do it. Whether he was a Febrez or an illegitimate one. I want to know every single one of them.”
“Any distinct features?”
“I haven’t seen his face but...”
His eyes flashed into my memory. That was distinct enough.
“Red eyes. Strikingly red eyes. Those eyes were scary yet somehow warm... Was that enough?”
“In the Febrex population, three out of ten possess such ‘strikingly, scary yet somehow warm red eyes.’ Febrez is an in- demand genes. Many would wish to be impregnated for these red streaks.”
I can’t believe such a trait could be inherited. Was that part of their culture?
“Like father, like son. The saying is indeed true. Speaking of red streaks, Colosas finally publicized his fiancée. If not the guild, no one would dare talk about the engagement of a Febrez. I guess that should be good enough as a payment.”
He heaved a sigh and gently took the contract from my hands. “I’m tired of announcing engagements that doesn’t even last long. Don’t you think I’ve lived such an absurd life for so long?”
“You’re too slow to notice. I can’t believe it took you half of your lifetime to realize. Alas, I’m going home now. I had to settle some financial statements first.”
“Are you a Count? Such hassle...”
“You knew everything. I can’t untie the leash unless I’m married.”
With another heavy sigh, I left the pub.
-
Markus tore the contract his comrade just signed. Even after she left, her voice keeps ringing on his ears and embarrasses him.
“Asking me for marriage then suddenly saying it’s a joke. How shameless, Cass.”
He gathered all the documents from his table and threw everything to his open cabinet. He grabbed his coat and squeezed the knob beside the cabinet. Aside from him, nobody knows that passage, even his long- time comrade Cassey.
“What took you long?” A man in his nightwear, wearing specs and leaning on the window, uttered.
“It’s a client, Tradiskano.”
“That client must be a VIP. To think you would really postpone a meeting with another VIP must mean he is more important than any VIPs in your life.”
“Shut it, Tradiskano. It’s almost like you’re saying I am infatuated to her.” Markus spins on the swivel chair.
“I’m not one to meddle in your affairs, especially women.” Tradiskano was resting his chin on the table, with eyes drunken from all the work he has done for the day.
“Whatever, I can never be with her.”
“Are you really hesitating for a girl?”
“She was never in my plan in the first place. Since she has the blood of a Maharlika.”
Markus caressed the picture frame on his table and then covered his eyes with his veiny hands.
“I’ll take a nap, Tradiskano.”
“You can rest whenever you want, Markus.”
Then the two guys rested peacefully.
On the other hand, the sun has risen already and the Timmerhaus residence is getting worked. This is the first time the legendary lady- in- waiting, the duchess of Froilan, has came to visit. The sister of the countess is a close kin of the Restitute, the most favored concubine of the emperor, and the servants of the Timmerhaus wanted to leave a good impression on her, to have a brighter future of getting employed at the imperial palace. A recommendation from the emperor’s most beloved consort would surely bring them to higher heights.
Cassey Timmerhaus, the only one who isn’t excited of her arrival, is busy writing the papers. Her eyes were dark and tired from all the writing. She only slept for a few hours and woke up to finish some papers. She was aware of how the maids of the esteemed daughter peeks at her unfavorable state, and laughs to themselves. She has predicted that the esteemed lady would barge in to her room and act merciful.
“Greetings, sister! This humble daughter offers her humblest regards and greetings to the elder sister.”
‘Where did you read that greetings? How unnecessarily awkward,’ she mumbled.
“Greetings, Ashanti. What brings you here?”
“Auntie was at the dining table. She must be waiting for us, oh! Don’t tell me, mother never told you?”
‘Pfft, does she think I’m easily pissed by such things? How adorably stupid.’
“I was informed beforehand. But you see, I’m handling the finances right now, which is also important so I am expected to send my greetings to maternal aunt later. I’m sure she would understand.”
Ashanti was taken aback. To think her sister is still so calm despite that.
“Y-yes I’m sure she would be considerate. Then, I shall take my leave.”
The esteemed daughter arrived at the dining area and gracefully greeted the aunt.
“Greetings to auntie! I am Esteemed Daughter Ashanti Kaia Timmerhaus, and---”
“Of course, I know you already. You don’t need to bother yourself with the long greetings. Well, where’s Cassey?”
Ashanti’s face hardened when she heard her sister’s name.
‘I am here and yet, she’s looking for that dumb thing.’
“It’s because sister claimed that she is busy. I told her that you arrived but...”
“Is that so?”
Ashanti smirked at her aunt’s reaction.
‘I am terribly sorry, Cassey. But this could ruin your luck.’
“Please don’t misunderstand aunti--- Of course, I won’t misunderstand.”
Ashanti was annoyed.
‘Why are you not angry at her?’
“If it weren’t for Cassey, those financial statements won’t be achieved by the Timmerhaus. Lira is always busy and pushing her works to Cassey. How would she be able to marry?”
Ashanti gritted her teeth. Cassey is supposed to be hated by the aunt but was praised instead.
“Well, would you like to have a tea with me on the garden, Ashanti?”
Ashanti smiled innocently despite the bitterness she felt.
“Shall we go auntie?”
“Unfortunately, Cassey had work. Well, it’s fine since we could have tea anytime.”
Ashanti glared at the back of her aunt. She hates how the aunt idolizes her sister. At the back of her mind, she curses her and swears to kill her when she becomes a queen.
‘Once I become the queen, I’ll get rid of Cassey and everyone who favors her.’
-
“So why are we here? I heard the maternal aunt is at the residence right now, so what are we doing here?” Cassey was wearing pants and is currently on top of a beast.
“It’s hard keeping this from you. So, I decided to talk to you, personally.”
Cassey jumped off to the ground and spread her umbrella. There were tiny droplets of rain falling on her head but she thinks her mother would not notice.
“I’m thinking of divorcing the count. We may spent a lot of times together but we still don’t understand each other. We can’t be together forever, right? I want some freedom too.”
“Then who’s the new guy you’ll be marrying?”
“The duke of Morelli.”
Cassey let out a tiny laugh. “I knew it. That’s why you’re gleaming, huh?”
“You might be thinking he’s not any different from my past lovers. But he is. He treats me with respect and he is a capable man. I never plan marrying him right after a divorce but, it just so happen that he confessed to me right after the count and I filed for divorce.”
Cassey was quiet. Her mother noticed how quiet and gloomy she was, so she held the umbrella instead of Cassey.
“Please don’t be so gloomy. You should know how I’ve been waiting to escape from that house full of war. You shoulf be happy that I’m free right?”
“Mother... Do you really think you could free yourself from that leash with another leash?”
Cassey was slapped. She smiled at her mother painfully, with tears forming at the corner of her eyes.
“Then, what about me Mother? Where should I go this time? Should I follow you? Or should I go to grandma instead? Must I welcome another stepsibling?”
“With your status now, you can’t just enter the Morelli and expect adoration. If you were the esteemed daughter, you can’t also be with me. But you know that Ashanti is lacking knowledge in the nature of your work, so you should be an aid to her.”
“Then, am I finally imprisoned in that house?”
Her mother caressed the side of her cheek that she slapped. Cassey flinched out of pain and she buried her nails on her legs.
“Then you must marry. That’s the only way you could free yourself. You’ll be free from the responsibilities of a Timmerhaus’ shadow. You’ll be free from all the hassle from your maternal family. You just have to be a good wife, Cassey. I hope that’s not too much for you. You’re almost turning 18. You should be able to take care of yourself.”
“If you marry him, will you really be free?”
Her mother smiled and said, “I promised.”
Her mother left Cassey unshielded from the pouring rain. Cassey went and rode on the beast quickly. She thought of the things her mother just told her.
“How am I going to believe your promises?”
“She wants me to get married. Does she wants me to experience such distress? Mother must be a sadist.”
She arrived at the capital. She had no intention of going home, since she’s aware her aunt will pressure her more about marrying.
“Miss what’s your business here?” a vendor asked her. She roamed her eyes on the goods sold by the vendor. The table is full of brooches and hairpins.
“Why are there so many brooches here?”
“Ladies love them. You know, there’s a festival coming, and a lot of noblemen are gearing for a hunt. It’s the perfect time for noble girls to hunt for their groom.”
A groom? Cassey has never thought of that. She ran swiftly to the registration booth, leaving her beast on the care of dark skinned teenage girl.
Unbeknownst to her, a mysterious man hidden in the shadows was closely observing her.
“Looks like we’re going to meet at last, Milady...”
The man disappeared from the crowd.
VI. FiestaThe capital was crowded than ever. Nobles are visiting one store to another, buying expensive souvenirs and jewelries to boast when the time comes. Commoners took this opportunity as a chance to sell their handmade products. Their children are out of sight, busy running errands for the higher ranks. Women, noble or not, are on their best dresses and behaviors. On their preferred seats, they await for their ‘prince charming on a white horse’ to take their hand. With all the grand decorations and the presence of the royalties, this is not bad for the day of fiesta.Cassey Timmerhaus rode on her horse, a swift and elegant black mare. Cassey is wearing an equestrian uniform in light pink color. Her mother chose that color for her. Her silky black hair was tied on a clean bun, exposing her sharp jaws. Noblewomen who prejudiced her for having black hair and eyes were infatuated to her sword- cut features, and often compare her side profile with their l
Today, I woke up in tears. Mother and I had a quarrel early in the morning that rooted from a mistake I made in the finances. In the end, she finished the work and I fled to my uncle’s house.“It was your fault, Sica,” Grandmother said while knitting the yarn. I pouted. Although I don’t expect her to take my side, I somehow wished she would see things in my perspective.“You shouldn’t have answered her like that, Sica. After all, she’s your mother. If you want to badmouth someone, then why don’t you hit that Count? He’s useless, so...”“Does my maternal grandmother really think things are as simple as hitting someone, like how Maharlikas do to their child? If I really did that, I must have been sentenced to death now. Knowing mother, she would surely take his husband’s side.”Nothing has really changed. Maternal grandmother still hates the Count. She was so opposed with the marr
The loud crows of a rooster awoken me. In just a month, my mother is getting married to the Duke of Morelli. I immediately went to the bathroom to take a bath. Upon arriving at the bath, I was surprised at the number of red petals on the tub. I may not be able to smell it but I felt the liquid streaming down my cheeks. There’s only one person in the house who could do such detailed work.“Lola… it was you,” I said with much certainty. My grandmother peeked from the shower curtain. It’s nice to see her being energetic and beaming.“I don’t regret making such an arrangement. I will certainly make you the most beautiful, even more beautiful than your mother.”Maternal grandmother washed my hair fondly. However, I am not delighted even in the slightest. Even if I wear the brightest jewels of the empire, it may not be able to hide my dull appearance.“It’s a shame, Lola.”“T
Cassey’s head was squeezed by a nutcracker. It wasn’t exaggeration; it definitely feels like being squeezed.“Lady Cassey, are you alright?”Lady Lieughan asked in a worried tone. Cassey shrugged and sat down when her mother finally reaches the elevated stage.“This thing should end sooner.”Cassey’s face throughout the ceremony was crumpled and distorted. Her mother would crease her brows every time she catches the sight of her daughter’s displeasing facial expression. Lady Lieughan held Cassey’s trembling hands and occasionally fans her when other’s are busy applauding for the new couple.“And on this moment, with the presence of the dignified ladies and gentlemen, I shall pronounce you, husband and wife.”The crowd gave them a round of applause. The new duchess, Liracynthia, bowed happ
The smell of roses reached Cassey’s stuffy nose.“I heard you had a nosebleed.”Her mother’s words broke the silence. The proud Ashanti was sitting beside her mother, intentionally displaying her close relations with her. Cassey stared at them, as they sat comfortably on the soft cushions. She tapped the table to create melody and rocked her wooden chair.“The doctor said it was out of fatigue.”Cassey’s answer infuriated her mother. The tapping never ceased.“So what do you imply? Everybody knows I never left a job for you. You should be living well now!”Liracynthia raised her voice. Ashanti hurt her ears from the loud sound. She shoot glares at Cassey, thinking that her mother’s rage was caused by her sister’s stupidity.“Sister, you should have told me that you were exhausted. I could take some of your work.”Ashanti’s concerns were a mask t
It was a story of a brilliant woman who chose to leave her beloved home to test her luck at the neighboring empire, in hopes of saving her bloodline from the danger of being extinct. My mother once told me about her sacrifices for the Maharlikas. Due to unfortunate events and the consequences of their rage, the Maharlikas has faced a threatening crisis – poverty. Because of that, my first aunt was forced to work as a maid of an old baron in the empire. Her skills were recognized by the queen and took her as a lady-in-waiting. The second aunt never gave up the farmlands and worked as a farmer of another baron. She never attracted a member of the imperial family like her older sister, but she cared for her sickly mother, who cried all her joy because of her husband’s sudden death. My mother, Lira Maharlika, studied hard and gathered all the scholarships she could pass to sustain living in the expensive state of Larunduquez, while having me. She suffered from discrim
Cassey was getting ready for work.A sunny side up egg, baked bacon that looked like the frills of a noble lady’s dress, and cooked rice shaped like the crescent moon. It was her usual meal to give her the strength and motivation to work.“Working again, Sica?”Akoi looked at her dear cousin. Cassey was sleep deprived, and her eyes are drooping low.“I think it is better to have more sleep first.”Cassey shook her head aggressively to disagree.“I have plans on the weekend.”Akoi gasped and put her hands near the heart, as if she is having an attack.“Y-you… you’re still my cousin, right?”Cassey weakly nodded, that made Akoi react excessively, falling on the floor with her head low.“Sica, perhaps… have you gone nuts?”Cassey sat on the table and quietly chewed her food. She failed to hear what her overreacting cousin sai
Even under the dim light, I could see how disappointed my mother looks at me.Just a moment ago, my dinner date with Cai was interrupted by blue-collar men.“Lady Cassey Timmerhaus. The blue collar needs your cooperation.”I held my rage and answered politely.“For what cause, Sir?”I nervously stared at the officer’s eyes, an attempt to read the situation. But all I could sense is a vague danger.“Lady Cassey, you are mandated to cooperate in the investigation of the corruption and embezzlement within the County of Timmerhaus.”I burst.“Is the officer suggesting that I am suspected of embezzlement?”“Any attempt of retaliation is prohibited, hence, we request you to behave and cooperate silently, like your life is on the line.”The blue-collar men chained my hands behind and locked it with a golden padlock.I looked back at Cai one la
A woman's thoughts are complex. But Cassey's are endless. Her mind is a bottomless pit and her ideas flow unceasingly like a river. There is no end to it.She writes a poem in the morning, a prose after an afternoon nap and a few words before she goes to bed. She is drawn to her own words, to her own world. When she was a young kid, she thought that a pen contains nicotine because it is too addicting, although during that time she was not even sure what a nicotine was. She just heard it from the older men in the manor. Her friends love her tales. Lieughan especially loved her romantic novels. She often requests Cassey to think of her as the main character, and lately, she has been begging Cassey for the hero to have the "shell" of a Febrez, which basically means the usual appearance and physical characteristics of a Febrez man, especially their red streaks hair. Cassey obliges to her requests because she finds it cute how her friend uses her novels to feed her fantasies about Markus (
An insignificant place. That was how aristocrats think and talk about the farmlands. Only when the genius prodigy, Liracynthia Maharlika, taught the upper class how significant the farmlands are to the nation’s economy that it is finally recognized as one, as a significant place. However, there are still people who hate the smell of grasses, including the genius prodigy herself – Duchess Liracynthia Morelli.“Lira, why are you scratching your skin aggressively?”“Because it itches me! Where is that girl, how dare she come late to my dinner?”That second aunt gulped heavily as she caressed Akoi’s back, who was raging with anger and annoyance towards the duchess.‘She is speaking as if she never lived in the farmlands before, what a b*tchy hypocrite.’Just then, the bell of the front gate rang. “I am going to open the gates. Excuse me.”“Yes, and please usher that b*tch too!”Akoi then stormed her way out.“Ahh, this stresses me out. I should have not…”“Even if she is your daughter, y
Cassey was panting aggressively as she sat down in Cai’s new couch.“What did you just say?”“I said, MY MOTHER WANTS TO MEET THE BOTH OF US!”Cai gasped and plopped beside her. She leaned onto her shoulders and stretched his arms to wrap around her waist.“But we should not be scared right, since we have nothing to be scared of?”The lady patted his hair which made him close his eyes.“Yes, that is the true. But nevertheless, we need to be more than prepared, Cai. My mother is the duchess of Morelli, and I am only a commoner now. I need to have the confidence she was missing when I was a noble’s daughter.”Cai loosened from the hug and stared at Cassey.“Then we should prepare right away!”They heard a growl. Cassey awkwardly smiled and caressed her tiny stomach.“Maybe we should have lunch first?”“I guess you are right.”-“Cai, do I look fine with this?”Cassey asked as she played with the silky balloon skirt.“Mhm. It really suits you.”“Pfft… You are not even looking Cai.”Cai s
Cai walked through the silent corridors. He reached his house unit but he noticed how the door was unlocked. He slowly squeezed the knob and…“Greetings Lady… Oh, it was actually you, Cassey.”Cassey turned around and faced him.“I am really sorry for barging in, Cai. I really need to talk to you about something, but you seem to be late so I just unlocked it. You know, I am a little scared of staying outside for too long.”Cai just smiled.“It is fine. We are soon to be married, so I guess it should be fine to give you the right to enter whenever you need to. Well, what brings you here?”“I missed you.”Cai flinched and his legs weakened.“Pardon me?”Cassey sat straight and stared at his eyes.“I missed you, Cai.”Cai doubted his ears. Since when did Cassey became like this?“I know I am soon to be your wife, but I was so busy with work and other stuffs. I did a good work, so the Tradiskano rewarded me with a vacation.”The Tradiskano allows employees to have a vacation? That sounds
The sunrise was a pleasing sight to Cai. It reminds him of a new day, and a new day is a new hope. He needs tons of hope and patience for his business.“I really hope the Amadeos will help me this time. It is very difficult doing everything by my own.”He then placed his documents carefully on his bag, and squeezed the knob of the door. When he is finally outside, he noticed that Cassey’s door is locked from the outside.“How strange... Did she go to work so early?”Maybe... That could be possible. So with that thought on his mind, Cai departed.Unbeknownst to him, Cassey never went home last night at all.“The report is impressive and well-written. I am grateful to you for your sincere cooperation, Lady Cassey.”Cassey never replied to the excited claims of her boss, the Tradiskano. She is mentally sleeping with her eyes wide open.“Have you eaten breakfast yet?”She snapped at the word ‘breakfast.’ The Tradiskano chuckled and grabbed the tele communicator.“Wow, what an advanced tec
As birds chirped, Cassey lifted her head and sighed heavily. Her back hurts from carrying a bundle of woods back and forth. The sun is high up, but she was unable to rest even for a minute.“Cassey Maharlika!”And finally, the call she was waiting for…When she receives the money, she plans on spending half of it for a cup of rice with sauteed vegetables, and half will be allotted for a humble dinner at an inn.“I am here.”“Oh, Cassey Maharlika. The former…?”The madame tilted her head, and Cassey knew what she was going to say next.‘Detainee.’A word that is always linked to her. She feels bad for it, but never complained even once. As long as she could eat three times a day, those things could never hurt her. So, she just accepts it, out of desperation and exhaustion.“Yes, I am.”“Well, you see… That mister over there is looking for you.”Cassey followed the direction the madame was pointing. Then she had a glimpse of a familiar back profile. She just stared at his back, until th
The days passed so quickly and Cassey’s work from home routine has finally met its end. Thus, Cassey will be reporting to her job at the stationery again.“Good bye and thank you, Miss Cama!”Cassey chuckled at her cute pupils. Her face turned back to the old professionally stern and stiff look when she sensed the sharp gaze from the window of Madame Oprah. Madame Oprah has been keeping strict watch over Cassey, but unbeknownst to her, Cassey is also keenly and quietly spying on her.“Mom, the Madame Oprah is coming.”Navis snitched to her. She came from the kitchen to get Cassey a glass of water, and she happened to see Madame Oprah pretending that she is strolling on the garden.“I will buy you some grilled meat tomorrow. Look forward to it, my children.”Navis and the other pupils beamed and they started to run away as the Madame Oprah is getting closer to where they stand.“Oh, Miss Maharlika!”As soon as the children left, the annoying voice of the witch rang in Cassey’s ears.‘T
Tired from work, Cassey lazily laid herself on the couch.“Cass! I told you it’s not good to lie down after a long walk!”Cassey groaned while rising from the couch.“Who told you that thing?”“My mother. But it’s not something superstitious Cass, it’s really, definitely, certainly unhealthy to immediately lie down after a long walk. Remember during sprint classes, we are not even allowed to sit after a finishing a lap.”“Really?”“What do you mean by that ‘really’? Do you not know?”Actually, Cassey never knows.“I do…”“Then why are you doing it? I am sure you are not the kind who does unhealthy things.”“Honestly, I don’t. During my studies, I have to skip sprint classes. My mother excuses me from the instructor, who happens to be her friend, so that I could focus on the tasks she gives me.”Cai patted her shoulders.“That’s so pitiful. I hope you don’t take those things to heart.”“I am not pitiful in any way. I hated being active since it’s a big waste of time.”Cassey definitely
The streetlamps lit in golden beam. Several stores and inns have lighted their establishments and buildings too. It was heavily dark tonight – an unfortunate new moon.Among the stores in the certain street, one store is obviously different.Tradiskano’s Stationery Shop.First and foremost, it was founded and owned by the Tradiskano, a monster in business. Second, it is a stationery shop, where customers could buy materials for writing and typing, such as paper, pens and ink. In a period of time where majority of the men in the Febrez household are in marriageable age, the stationery shop is an oasis in a desert. Be it scented paper or a colorful pen or a ribbon to adorn, everything a girl wishes for her confession letter can be bought in Tradiskano’s stationery shop. Third, the quality never disappoints. Despite being known as a noble, the Tradiskano also sell affordable products for the working class. Those affordable products are actually even better than the expensive products fro
