I paced the floor of the living room contemplating what tasks I had left to complete around the house.

I was alone at home again because Kerrick was at work, so I tried my best to pass time preoccupying myself with something to do. I already did everything I needed to for the morning because it was only two of us so there wasn't much, to begin with.

Three weeks went by since I was in this house, but it still felt strange being here.

It didn't feel like my home but Kerrick's, so I always felt like I was intruding in his personal space whenever he was around and I was just a stranger here.

I missed my home with my father. I missed the curtains, the carpets, the floors - everything I longed for back at my old house.

What was worst of all was the fact I had no one to talk to.

Kerrick mentioned earlier that we didn't have any neighbors. From what he knew, they were business people who traveled frequently so they were never around.

I missed gossiping and interacting with everyone around me

"One or two?"I lifted the fruits in my hands, trying to figure out which one had better quality and how many I should take.I shoved them in my cart and continued onto another aisle before I stopped and picked up more things. It was refreshing leaving the house after being locked in for so long, I felt so free I didn't want to return at all.I pushed my cart and gazed along the aisles nostalgic for my father's store but it was better than nothing.I decided early in the morning I was going shopping because I was tired of sitting around bored and the house desperately needed a few things.I left as soon as I was finished cleaning for the morning and went straight to the nearest supermarket.I had to admit I was glad I did because I finally felt free again to think coherently and without looking over my shoulder. My shopping cart stopped when I made it up to the cashier, a thin dark haired girl that reminded me of myself as a teenager. She checked my groceries and I swiped my card acro

What was a marriage? What did it mean when I came to this house? What was I supposed to do with this responsibility?I didn't know it was going to be this hard for me but it was.I knew our marriage wasn't built on love so happiness wasn't a high expectation on my mind but neither was disappointment.I didn't know the weight of the title wife, or what it meant but I was slowly understanding it.When I agreed to this marriage I was thinking only about my father, I didn't stop to ask about myself or my well-being.I tried to help Kerrick but all he did was gnaw away at my sanity.I didn't know he could make me cry as much as I did or leave me with feelings of loneliness but it was the reality of our marriage.I was still Delancy and Kerrick was still himself, marriage wasn't going to change that."I'm going to be early from work today.""Okay.""When I return, I'm going to be busy, so don't get in my way."I sat beside him on our bed and contemplated his words.I didn't know if I was hi

Golden sunlight poured through the window at my bedside while I secretly skipped through the pages of Kerrick's photo album.Something had to be in there, something I missed but I wasn't sure what I was looking for, to begin with.In the majority of the photos, he was standing with his father. In another few, a person I suspected to be his mother, besides that nothing crossed the norm.I scratched my head and looked at another picture of him and his mother together. They were exact contrasts. Her face was bright and she was always smiling though it looked a bit forced.Kerrick on the other hand was withdrawn and disinterested."These pictures are old," I whispered under my breath and turned another page. All of them seemed to be taken before Kerrick and his family lived in his father's 'big house'.I closed the album and hid it back where I found it because I felt guilty for going through his personal things.I slowly made my way back downstairs where Kerrick was working since before

I folded our clothes while I watched Kerrick sitting by a window, staring out at the sky.His face was the perfect image of blankness but his eyes were glazed over with what looked like sadness. Each time I folded a new piece of clothing I watched him, but his gloomy expression didn't change."Delancy.""Yes?""We're going to a party tonight.""What?""A business party, my father is throwing it at the office."I licked my lips and furrowed my brows nervously."Kerrick, I've never been to a business party before."He was quiet and he didn't look at me.I went and put our clothes away but he was still looking out the window."I don't have anything to wear."He turned to me slowly and sighed."I'll take you to a store then."I smiled and rubbed the nape of my neck."Um, Okay, thanks."He got up and walked over to where I was, and I averted my gaze but I could tell he was staring at me.A blush colored my cheeks when I realized how embarrassing it was to be avoiding him so obviously but h

"What do you see in him?"I lowered the box I was holding and stared intently at Daniel."What makes him so special that you chose to marry him?""What are you asking?"Our gazes locked for the longest moment and I felt an uneasy feeling in my stomach."You've never done anything in haste or made any risky decisions regardless of what the reasons are. So why him?"My mind went blank for a moment and I searched for words to fill the blankness around me.What was I supposed to say? That wasn't exactly true? I didn't love Kerrick and he didn't love me?"I don't know."He laughed, shattering the tension between us and surprising me."I thought you would say something like that."He ruffled my hair a bit, much to my protest, and an ache formed in my chest when I realized how much I missed being around him."If you're happy with him, I can't complain. I only hope he realizes what an amazing person you are." He practically beamed from ear to ear as he spoke, oblivious to the truth."I know h

"How do I look?"I ran my hands over the dress I was wearing and turned slowly so Kerrick could see me, he watched intently but in silence."You look okay.""Um, thanks." I smiled gladly, grateful that I was still able to look good in this dress as I did in the other, but I knew I had the jewelry I was wearing to thank for that."If you're finished dressing, let's go."He held my hand and walked along with me until we were outside and in his car. For almost the entire journey I couldn't help staring at him because he looked very handsome due to how well he was dressed. I wanted to mention it to him but thought better of it.There were so many things I felt when I was around Kerrick that grouping them all under one word was impossible. One thing was certain though, I would never forget the way he humiliated and hurt me.I made the choice a long time back to focus on other things so I wouldn't be hindered by the things he did, but sometimes I couldn't and all I felt was bitterness and r

"Delancy," The hairs on my skin rose when he said my name. I paled and stared at him dumbfounded but he beamed at me. "I'm not judging you or anything, we all do things for the stuff we want. I'm sure you and I aren't that much different from each other."He pulled my hand and brought me even closer to him, his strong, expensive cologne almost choking me."How do you know?" I muttered, still heavily shocked and confused.Didn't Kerrick say no one else besides us and our fathers knew?Stephen stared contemplatively at me as if he wasn't understanding what I was asking."I'm very close to Mr. Matthau." He simply said."Close?""Yes, very close. I'm one of his most trusted employees and he even treats me like his son.""His son? Kerrick is his son! How can you stand in front of me talking this rubbish?""Calm down, I didn't mean it in an offensive way." He said laughing, obviously trying to stir up my emotions. "I'm not surprised he didn't tell you." He looked me over then threw his head back and laughed. "I asked him to find a wife before I could consider him for a certain proposition. I asked, staring at the floor wide-eyed and ashamed to meet his gaze."Delancy I'm a business man, not a preacher so you have to expect that I'll do what's in my best interest."My gaze flicked back to him but I couldn't believe what he was saying. How could someone be so callous and harsh without batting even an eyelash?Did I really sacrifice my life for this? Did I give up everything for something so small?Humiliation, embarrassing, loneliness and pain - I endured it all with Kerrick and he was only using me?Did I give up my life with my father and

I said running my fingers through his hair.A soft smile traced across his lips as he tilted his head up to look at me. "I'm glad you're taking an interest in what's happening."I smiled back at him and nodded."E&E's sell canned goods as you know so with the new canning machine we have at the factory we can easily output at least ten thousand cans a week." As I put the finishing touches on tonight's meal, I couldn't help but watch in awe as steam slowly billowed out of the pot on the stove. The tantalizing aroma wafted through the air, making my mouth water in anticipation of the delicious meal ahead. I was in the middle of turning off the stove when I heard Kerrick's car pull into our driveway so I quickly headed to the door to greet him. As soon as he walked in, I noticed a glimmer in his eyes that seemed to suggest that he was filled with excitement. "You look happy, what happened at work?" I asked curiously. Instead of replying he picked me up bridal style and spun me around and I clung to him and burst out laughing at his unusual behavior until he put me down. "I did it, Delancy," He said hugging me. "I got a client!" "What!?" I mumbled out shocked but as I locked eyes with him he nodded with confirmation. I hugged him in elation and began jumping around while holding him. "This is amazing news! "Do you have everything packed?" I asked Kaleb as he was getting ready to go off to school."Yes Mom," He answered as he threw his backpack on and headed towards the door."Don't forget this," I said handing him his lunchbox as he thanked me. Just then Kerrick came down the stairs and called him."Kaleb," He said going up to him and hugging him. "I love you.""Um, thanks Dad," Kaleb responded bewildered. He seemed caught off guard by his unusual actions but said nothing as he bid us goodbye before heading off to school."Is everything okay?" I asked."Yes, It's just that my dad never told me he loved me so I wanted to make sure I never forget to tell Kaleb." He said looking out the window at our son heading up the road."Wait are you serious?" I asked in disbelief. He paused and turned to me silently. "You were the first person to ever tell me that you loved me."My heart nearly broke when Kerrick confessed this and I instinctively reached for him."It's okay. I don't care about that

A few days had passed after meeting Charles and although Kerrick gave him no answer he was still pushing the idea of a merger. As of right now, I decided to visit my dad while Kerrick was at work and Kaleb was at school so I could get my mind off the situation. As I approached my dad's store and my old home, pleasant memories flooded my mind and a smile broke out on my face when I saw my best friends standing right outside the doors. When they noticed me they ran and hugged me and I burst out laughing. Samantha and Victoria always knew how to lighten my mood and I was so lucky to have them as my friends. "You caught us on our way out!" Victoria said between giggles."Oh, I should've come sooner." I apologized. "It's fine, we'll call later," Samantha added as she hurried up to her car."Where are you guys going ?" I inquired as I watched them."I have to pick up my daughter from daycare," Samantha said unlocking her door. "And I'm meeting up with my boyfriend!" Victoria added with

Kerrick was carrying Kaleb on his shoulders when we came home from the football match. Kaleb was still riled up from his win even hours after and couldn't stop talking about it. Kerrick and I were very proud of him and we laughed as we watched our son could bask in his victory."Kaleb, weren't you nervous when you were about to score?" I asked as I helped him down from Kerrick's shoulders."No, I knew I could make it," He smiled and ran around the living room, still full of energy.I smiled as I watched him beam with happiness but I couldn't take my mind off Kerrick's words."My business deal fell through"Kerrick didn't say anything else about it the entire evening but I knew he must've been crushed after all the efforts he put in. "Where are you going so early?" I asked my son while clearing the table after breakfast. Kaleb had changed out of his pajamas into a blue jumper paired with a white T-shirt and was currently tying his shoelaces. "I'm going to meet my friends, remember I told you." He said jumping to his feet. "I do but it's still early," I said looking over at the wall clock and sighing. "Okay but remember to come home for lunch," I followed him to the door and watched as he hopped on his bicycle before riding off. "Bye, mom!" He called back to me as he went up the road. "Keep out of the road and watch out for cars!" I responded as he rode away and he paused momentarily to nod before continuing on his way. I turned to go back into the house so I could help Kerrick get ready but not before glancing up the street at my son's retreating figure. Once inside I got Kerrick's things together and put them on the table just as I heard him coming down the stairs. "Where's Kaleb?" Kerrick asked while fixing

Sunlight filtered through the curtains by the window as a cool gust of wind blew in and the sky was still overcast from recent rain. The sound of children laughing and running by putting a smile on my face as I waited patiently. I looked over at Kerrick who was quietly working at the table with a mug near his face, wafts of steam warming his lips but not taking the concentration from his eyes as he reviewed his papers. I turned back to the window which looked up the street that all the children were coming down and searched until finally, I saw Kaleb coming my way, his smile warming my heart as he ran along the street. He was walking between two friends, but he was unmistakable from his dark hair protruding from under his yellow raincoat, his obsidian eyes, and his quick stride. I watched him wave goodbye to them and cross the street before running up to the house and I left the window to greet him at the door. "Mom!" He said surprised to see me already waiting for him. I gave him a b

I ran the tips of my fingers over the soft delicate petals of the roses I carried as I followed my father's footsteps. Slowly he stopped and kneeled on the ground as we made it to our destination, my mother's grave."She was so pretty, your mother." He spoke without meeting my eyes, taking the flowers I was carrying and the ones he also had, he placed them in matching ceramic vases opposite each other by her gravestone. "She was so young and I don't think I'll ever stop loving and missing her.""I'm sorry," I looked at my father sadly but with a tinge of happiness that we were finally able to come here together after so long. "I guess I'll never truly understand the pain you went through when you lost her but that just goes to show how much she meant to you and me."My father tucked the last rose firmly in the vase next to him and touched her gravestone again, closing his eyes for a moment when he did so.
