I checked on Brooke throughout the afternoon. Because she was hungry, Everett said she could eat small meals every couple of hours as long as they were bland. This actually helped because her grief was keeping her from being able to eat much, but her desire to leave this room was forcing her to eat. Aspen and Enya stayed with her all day, sometimes, just holding her hand, sometimes talking to her about what it’s like here.

By dinner time, I was able to help her sit up at a table to eat with Enya and Aspen. I already know that she’s not strong enough to leave the hospital tonight. She might have been if not for the news of her parents, but that has slowed her recovery and after dinner, I put her back into her bed as she’s too exhausted to walk.

Everett comes in a few minutes before our meeting with Cedric, Ishir, and the others.

“How are you feeling, Brooke?” he asks her.

“Tired,” she answers honestly.

He nods, checking over her vitals before turning back to her.

“I’d like you to

I had a very enjoyable night with my mate, one where both of us found our pleasure multiple times and I was able to dominate my mate enough that I then let her take control. I had her ride me backwards, in a reverse cowgirl, so I could see her pink ass cheeks bouncing on me. Since my mate seems to enjoy her spankings, as evidenced by her dripping wet pussy while I was spanking her, I spank her some more while she rides and when she has her last orgasm of the night, it was so hard, it pushed me over the edge again. I’m awake before her this morning, loving the feel of her in my arms, her long blond hair, mixed with the sapphire blue, spread across my chest and arm. I gently stroke her back, once again feeling so lucky that this dragon is mine. “Mmmm,” she murmurs, snuggling closer to me. “How lucky do you feel?” I smile. “Is my dragon feeling needy or greedy this morning?” “Greedy,” she says, looking up at me, her sapphire eyes glimmering. She gives me a naughty smile before sliding

Everett and Merethyl got Fenian and Yhendorn to agree to the paralytic testing. Yhendorn wanted to be on-site for the process to help if the vaccine didn’t work. So, we waited until the weekend to test Fenian. Yhendorn flew in with Kenna, and while he went inside to talk to Fenian before the test, Kenna went to talk to the dragons. Another one shifted this week, this time it was one of our female fire dragons. Both Everett and I have realized that the females seem to be shifting before the males. I asked the others and it’s not something that the dragons had ever consciously paid attention to before. I’m on my way to the hospital when Tesha comes rushing up to me. “Kaylani!” “Tesha, what’s wrong,” I ask, seeing the panicked look on her face. “Is it true?” “Is what true?” “Is Fenian going to do some stupid test to see if the elves are immune to the paralytic?” she asks, tears in her eyes. I take her hands. “No, that’s not exactly true,” I say, pulling her away from prying ears.

When I wake up from my most recent blackout, I find myself curled up next to a white dragon. The same white dragon that nearly killed me when we got out of my father’s laboratory. I have no idea how I got here, and I’m terrified that this dragon captured me in order to eat me, or feed me to it’s young. However, this little dragon seems to like me. I say it’s little because it’s the smallest dragon I’ve ever seen. And I say it likes me because it begins nudging me gently when I wake up. Then, I see that it has angry, bloody marks around its neck. “Hey there….” I look on its underside, “boy. I’m going to check your neck, okay. You look injured.” Instead of screeching at me or blowing fire or something, he croons at me. I take that as a good sign, and I walk up to him. “Ouch. That looks like it hurts.” I gently run my fingers over part of the wound, watching his neck flinch at the touch. “Sorry, boy. I didn’t mean to hurt you.” I look him over, and he watches me. “You remind me o

While Ancalagon is gone over the weekend with his father, I take the time to run tests on the other dragons and also on my mate. I want to make sure that she’s staying healthy during her first pregnancy. When Ishir and Cedric heard that I was testing Kaylani and doing an ultrasound, they insisted that I do the same for their mates and then Merethyl wanted one too, in case she could surprise Avani when he and Cal returned. Since I’m desperate to see my babies as much as Kaylani is, I run her tests first before doing an ultrasound. We’re the first human-dragon mate bond in a very long time and based on Yhendorn’s books, a dragon’s gestation will be around five months with a human-hybrid child. Add to that, Kaylani is having twins and she’s already showing, so I’m hoping that we’ll be able to see our little ones. Since we know we’re having a boy and a girl based on Ishir’s sense of smell, this is just a confirmation and a picture for us to keep. After taking all of her vital signs and

“What the fuck are you talking about, Doc?” Avani asks, the earth rumbling with his anger and frustration. Everett called everyone together this morning to explain what is happening with Ancalagon before we talk to him. “I’m not 100% sure…” “Then why the fuck are we having this conversation?” Avani growls. “Avani,” Merethyl says, putting her hand on his arm. He grits his teeth, pulling his mate into his lap and burying his face in her hair, breathing deeply. When he calms himself, he looks up at Everett. “My apologies. Please continue.” “What I think has happened, is that the scientists wanted to force Ancalagon into a mate bond with a specific person or hybrid. I’m not sure if that bond was intended to be with his Sunshine, or if they had someone in mind. But, either way, it doesn’t currently matter. Without a mate to claim him, Ancalagon is slowly going to begin losing his humanity.” Everett flashes another group of two DNA strands on the screen. “These strands are Amne and M

  • The Gentle Dragon   Chapter 53: Everett

Well, I wasn’t expecting that we’d have our first mate bond sealed with our hybrids and laboratory created dragons so quickly, but most of the dragons are coming of age now. Since they shift into adults, we’ll most likely have quite of few of these in the near future. Because I hadn’t claimed Kaylani like the other dragons, I’d been horrified at the strength of will and power it took to do it. It makes me rethink Kaylani’s idea of wanting to have public claimings. What if Amne had killed Kano. I’m not sure I could have forgiven Cedric or even Kaylani for holding me back. The dragons trumpet as Amne submits, blowing her fire on Kano. They lift into the air and begin to fly away. They don’t like seeing one of their own claimed. However, the group of dragons that are claimed, namely Kaylani and Tana, and even Zephyr who came back after hearing all the noise around us, stand by and wait to see the kind of rider that Kano will be. I have no such hesitation. Kano is my son. I may have onl

The next morning, we plan to talk to Cal about his DNA, but before we have a chance to do that, another one of the dragons shifts. Because these first shifts are so painful for the dragons, we all go outside to be with them. This time, it’s Kenzo, one of our earth dragons. He, Ajax, and Ancalagon have become close friends. So, I’m not surprised to see Ajax on one side of Kenzo and Ancalagon on the other. Ancalagon is crooning encouragement while Ajax is telling him to breathe through the pain. When he’s done, he’s barely conscious. Ajax picks him up before Everett can get to him, nodding at Everett to lead the way to the hospital. Since Everett will be busy and he’s our medical expert, I know that the conversation with Ancalagon will have to wait. As I turn back to the main house to continue working on the new curriculum for our students, I notice that Amne and Kano are standing close together, Kano’s arm around Amne, having watched Kenzo shift. That isn’t unusual. What does surpri

“Is this going to become the norm around here?” I ask everyone standing around us. “We have a large group of dragons that are coming of age, we have several hybrids that are of age or older, so yes, I think this is going to become a common practice,” Zephyr says. “I’ve started working on the dragon claiming and riders’ curricula. I need to meet with Tana, Avani, and Zephyr about the claiming curriculum, making sure we aren’t giving anything away. I need to meet with Cedric and Merethyl about claiming elves and Lycans, and you, Cedric, Merethyl, and Ishir need to review and finish developing the rider’s curriculum,” Kaylani says. “You’ve been busy,” I say, pulling her to my side. “I was hoping we could all get together to speak to Ancalagon, but he’s taken off with the other dragons. Any idea when he’ll be back?” “I’d say a couple of hours, so perhaps we should plan to speak to him first thing in the morning. Afterward, and depending on how that goes, we can work on the two curricul

Six months later School is in full session. We nearly tripled the number of students in this semester’s classes. A large portion of those are werewolves, which has brought an entirely new set of problems and solutions to our growing school. Cedric wanted more protection around the school, so he added werewolf patrols. Sometimes, those wolves take their jobs too seriously and not only keep others out, but try to keep the students in. And while I don’t want students wandering around on their own outside the school boundaries because it’s unsafe, I also know that a lot of our hybrids were held captive and knowing the are free to leave at any time goes a long way to making them feel safe here. Thankfully, Cedric and Tana manage the wolves and Cedric holds them accountable when they become overzealous about not letting the students out of the territory. The other group that has added to our numbers this year is the elves. We had several already, but now most of the troupes have sent at l

  • The Gentle Dragon   Epilogue 1: Everett

I’ve been working as many hours as I can without taking too much time away from my mate and our newborn twins. I’m exhausted, but I can’t stop. I can’t figure out what Oliver did to cause the problems in Ancalagon’s DNA. What I do know is that his attitude has become abhorrent. He’s gone from the sweet, kind dragon that he used to be, to an arrogant, asshole prick who loses his temper over simple things. Yesterday, he blew his fire over the hybrids and it was only because of Ajax and Elio that he didn’t burn some of them alive. The three of them, Cal, Jax, and Elio, had started to get closer as friends, but now, I’m not sure if that will last. Ancalagon is being an equal opportunity jerk, lashing out at the elves, the werewolves, the hybrids, the lab dragons, the elemental dragons, and even his friends. The hardest part is that those who have dragon genetics in them feel the draw to answer to him because he’s their Alpha, no matter what kind of prick he's being. I’m not sure how I d

I stayed at home one more week after Everett returned to work, taking care of the twins. Once we got them on the same feeding schedule, it got easier. And then, by the end of the second week, we began supplementing my milk with formula, giving Everett a chance to help me feed our babies, but also giving me the opportunity to go back to work. Bajaro and Kayid had reached out to the shifters in the forest and there were several who had lost families or were alone who liked the idea of living among a bunch of young supernatural beings in a place that felt safer to them. We quickly renovated mine and Everett’s old rooms into a nursery where all of us could drop off our babies while we are teaching class, or for me, when I’m working. It’s a good thing that so many shifters wanted to come work for us, because we have a large number of babies with the possibility of more coming next semester. Before the end of the semester, all of the elemental dragons agreed to add in a class for claiming

Having a baby is exhausting, everyone says so. Having two….yeah, this is exhaustion like I’ve never felt before and I did my residency in the emergency department of a hospital. As a resident, I always got put on the night shift. There’s no such thing as sleep when you’re a resident. Of course, I’m older now, but, wow! I’m not sure if I’d prefer my babies be in sync and both want to be up at once, or if it’s better that one is just finishing when the other starts to cry. Then when that one is done, the first one is ready to eat again. Even as babies, my dragon babies have a voracious appetite. I’m rocking Ebba after she’s finished eating. Again. I’ve learned how to slide down in the rocker so I can hold her while she sleeps and still catch a little sleep myself. As I rock, I feel my mate put her hand on my arm. “Don’t, Kaylani. You’re feeding two dragons and sleeping less than I am. Don’t you dare push your strength into me,” I say, tired enough that I don’t bother opening my eyes.

The very next day, we implemented a requirement that any dragon claim, whether hybrid dragon, laboratory dragon, or pure dragon had to be requested. Any claim not going through the proper request would be stopped, by force if necessary. Ancalagon had snorted at the pure dragon wording in the decree. “Who would be stupid enough to claim me?” he asked. “Anyone who is power hungry enough to want the strength that only you can give them, Ancalagon. You’re the Alpha of us all. Controlling you means that someone could conceivably control all of us. That is a scary thought, considering the Chief and Oliver haven’t been dead that long,” I tell him. “What about Sunshine? Does this clause include her?” The way he asks, it’s as if he expects that it doesn’t include her. “It includes all dragons, Ancalagon,” Zephyr says to him. “So, if say, a certain white dragon tried to claim her, and I came across them, I could stop the claiming?” he asks, as if the rest of us don’t understand what he’s a

Tana’s delivery was a bit more intense than Zephyr’s. Being a fire dragon, her emotions literally run hotter. Add to that, Cedric missed the birth of his first two children, and he becomes very possessive when Tana is delivering a baby. After warning him twice, I finally had to wash him out and threaten to keep him out of the room if he couldn’t control his temper and his fire around Everett. All of our mates are possessive, but Everett is a doctor and Cedric can get over it. No one threatens my mate. After Tana snarled at him to get his shit together, he finally settled and Everett delivered their baby girl, one with a Lycan gene this time. They named her Aithne, which means fire. By the time we had delivered two babies, I was exhausted and so was Everett. As we walked back to the main house, Everett scooped me up. “You don’t have to carry me,” I tell him, but my head falls on his shoulder. “I know I don’t have to, but you’re exhausted.” “So are you,” I mumble. “Rest, my dragon

It was a long night. None of us were willing to go to bed while Ancalagon, Avani, and Zephyr were out. When they finally returned, we were all exhausted. I did find out from Zephyr that Ancalagon blames himself and realizes that Eliane probably blames him for what happened to her. Ancalagon had cried his dragon’s lament for hours, devastated with the news that Everett had given him. There are so many problems with the mate bond between Ancalagon and Eliane and I have no idea how to help them come together. “I wish I could do that thing that Merethyl does, where she says ‘peace’ and it flows through the person she wants to calm. I may only be human, Kaylani, but I am your rider. So, peace. I need you to relax. You’re carrying our twins and that’s already a lot of stress on your body,” my mate says once we’re back in our room. “I’m so tired, but I don’t know how to shut my mind off, Everett. This situation is terrible, putting brother against brother for a mate, one fated, one possib

  • The Gentle Dragon   Chapter 60: Everett

I watch as the dragons work together to calm Ancalagon. His anger is something to behold and it never occurred to me that as the manipulator of four elements, he could, quite literally, destroy the earth. As I watch, it makes me even more concerned that his DNA is breaking down where his mate bond should be. If his brother intends to fight him over his mate, would he really kill him? What would that do to Avani and Zephyr? Zephyr’s mental state isn’t as steady as the others, although Ishir keeps her mind from breaking. How would something like this affect her? How would it affect Ancalagon? And how would it affect Eliane? When Merethyl and Zephyr finally calm him enough, I walk up to him and put my hands against him, wanting to heal him with my element. It’s the first time that I’m attempting to do this with such massive injuries, and I know Zephyr is also pushing her element into him to heal him, but as soon as I open myself to my element, I can feel Ancalagon’s power and the heat o

“Kaylani, can I talk to you?” Tesha asks, as she knocks on my door. “Hey Tesha, come in,” I say, getting up from my desk and coming around to hug her. She looks like she needs a hug. “Do you want me to close the door?” She nods. I close the door and then lead her to a couch where we can sit together. “What’s on your mind, Tesha?” She looks everywhere but at me, before focusing on my stomach. When her eyes finally meet mine, I’m pretty sure I know what’s wrong. “I’m pregnant. I mean, I think I’m pregnant. I’m pretty sure I’m pregnant,” she huffs, then looks at me. “I’m pregnant and I don’t know what to do.” “What happened to the condoms?” “They burned off. Every time we used them they burned off. Then Fenian started pulling out but sometimes…” she scrubs her hands over her face. “I had no idea how strong the mate bond is. How good it would feel to be with him. In that moment, I don’t want him to pull out any more than he does, and now…” “Have you been to see Everett? Just to con
