"Our Luna would love a word with you, Kaya." Said the man as my mom and dad stood up from the table while Jack placed himself between the man and me.
"What is this in regards to?" Asked Jack.
"It's a private matter, Miss Kaya let's get going."
"I'll come with you." Jack said.
"That won't be necessary, it was instructed for her to come alone."
Jack and dad were about to protest but I cut them off.
"It's fine,I'll be back in no time." Right?
I thought to myself as I slipped my phone in my back pocket. As I was going I squeezed my parents hands.
As I came outside I saw 3 big black SUV cars, our royals really liked to travel in stile.
"Over here, Miss Kaya." The man said as he oped the door for me.I don't like when people take away my control.
"Thats ok, I'll follow you in my jeep."
The man simply closed the door and looked at the other man before getting in the car. Seeing the mark on their necks, the hanging half moon I suspected they were mind linking eachother. That was the power of the mark among the "royal" guards.
"What do you think She wants from us?" Said Safire.
"I don't know Saf, there is only one way to figure it out." I said in my mind as I turned on the engine.
I know exactly where the manor is,everybody does. But this was the first time I was actually going there. As for the Alpha Archer and Luna Victoria, I maybe saw them like three times in my life. Needless to say we don't run in the saim circles. Suddenly I found myself in front of a large iron fence guarded by many men,
when I pulled into their parking lot my poor jeep looked so out of place.
"Well at least here you don't have to worry about someone stealing your tires." Said Saf as she walked next to me.
That was one thing about my wolf that seemed to be different from the rest. Saf had the ability to be in my mind yes, but she didn't have to wait for me to transform to run freely. She would walk next to me,only visible to me. Normally when a werewolf gets injured, transforming helps the healing process but I don't have to do that.My wounds heal rather rapidly.
"Over here Miss Kaya." Said the man while opening a big wooden door.
"Thank you..."
"Jeffrey." He said.
"Thank you Jeffrey."
I followed him into a big library/workroom,he instructed me to sit and wait.
"Luna Victoria will be with you shortly." Jeffrey said as he left the room.
"Do you want me to snoop a bit?" Asked Saf.
"Go at it." I tell her in my mind.
And so she did, as I sat in my chair Saf roamed the room as I fallowed her with my eyes. If someone saw me, it would simply seem as if I were looking at the room.
"Anything interesting?" I asked.
"Depending on what you are looking for..." she said as she stood in front of a picture. "The future Alpha is definitely..." She was suddenly interrupted by the sound of the door opening. Luna Victoria was definitely a she wolf with clas. She wore a black power suit, her red hair in a low bun with some strands of hair perfectly framing her face. Her piercing green eyes were a statement, some wolves have said her eyes could see into your soul and that she could read your every thought.
"My apologies for keeping you waiting, my duties never seem to end." Said the Luna as she took a seat behind the desk.
"Kaya right?I have to admit that given your reputation I was expecting someone a bit older."
"My reputation?" I asked.
"You hunt people." She said.
"I find bad people and bring them to justice, if that is what you mean." My tone might have been a bit... off seeing how she narrowed her eyes at me.
"You do know that going into the human world isn't actually permitted." She said as she played with the letter opener.
"It is also not forbidden." I say, Saf was walking around Luna's chair. "Come here." I say to her in my mind.
Luna smiled to me as she leaned forward and dropped the letter opener.
"I have a task for you which I expect you to complete with absolute discretion."
"What kind of a task?"
She stood up and walked over to the edge of the table where she poured herself a glass of whiskey.
"You probably know that my husband is about to resign his position as the Alpha of Black river pack, the handover ceremony will take place in two weeks."
She paused for a moment to take a sip.
"My son Atlas has wandered away from the territory and my people cannot find him,he needs to be back in time for the ceremony. I need you to find him and bring him back."
"I don't understand. Did he leave? What makes you think he isn't coming back on his own."
"I never said so." She said as she arched her eyebrow.
"You didn't need to, if you are asking me not just to find him but to bring him back here my guess is..."
"Atlas and I had a little argument before he left." Luna said before she sat down again.
"What about?"
"Excuse me,why is that relevant?"
"Well you want me to find him,the reasons why he'll left could point me to his whereabouts." I say confidently.
"And how is that?" She asked me.
"Well if it was something minor he could just be around the corner in some shady bar trying to teach you a lesson like good kids do, Or it could be something big causing him to flee much further."
Luna just looked me in the eyes for a moment before saying...
"Atlas said he need more time before accepting his role as the new Alpha, but his father wouldn't hear of it. I'm afraid his getawaye is an attempt to gain time. Time that I don't have."
Hmm I'm supposed to hunt down my future Alpha.
"I can find him, that much I'm sure of but bring him back against his will. He is my superior If he orders me to leave,am I to disobey him?"
"I give you full freedom to do whatever you find necessary in order to bring him back.Whatever you need. You will of course be generously paid for your services."
I smiled to that.
"Fine, but i'm gonna have to see his room."
"Why is that?"
"His room is his most private place, where his essence lies. Once I get it, I'll be able to find him easier."
As I said that, Luna took a little bell from the desk and ringed it.
In matter of seconds Jeffrey opened the door.
"Take her to Atlas's room."
"Yes, my Luna. Miss Kaya if you would please follow me." I got up and walked to the door when...
"And as I said, full discretion."
"Yes Luna." I said as I finally walked out that door.
Jeffrey took me to Atlas's room, if you could call this a room. It was almost the size of my entire first floor. Not to mention the private bathroom, wardrobe, treadmill, computer station and the freaking balcony.Even some of the most well of criminals that I hunted didn't have this luxury.
"Jeffrey could you please leave me alone for a moment, I'm trying to get a good feel of his smell, you are kind of getting in the way."
He simply nodded his head and left.
"I can't believe they fall for that shit, I had his scent since the moment we stepped into the manor." Said Saf.
"Yes, but tracking him by smell could take days, and we learned that in this day in age you can find everything about them from their computer." I mind linked her as I turned on his computer. Hmm password, I looked down on the keyboard where you could clearly see the set of number mostly used.
"Wolfy wolfy, that ceremony really got you shiting your pants."I thought to myself as I typed the date of the ceremony.
"Bingo." Said Saf.
In a few clicks I found his search history
"He went to a night club, really. How old is this guy?" I thought.
"It's his Alpha ceremony so 32." Said Saf.
As I looked for a piece of paper to write down the address my eyes landed on a photo of Atlas. In a dark blue suit, with his parents.
He got his dads black hair and dimples in his cheeks, but the eyes were his mothers. Piercing green.
"Hot isn't he?" Saf teesed.
"I have the address, come on Saf let's get this wolfy home."
Jeffrey walked me out and watched me drive off in my jeep. Now I just have to explain to my family that I have to leave.Again, tonight.
"Well you better think of something fast because here we are." Said Saf as I puled into the driveway.Dad and Jack were waiting outside.
"Took you long enough." Said dad.
"What did they want with you?" Asked Jack.
"Luna has a job for me.And before you ask I can't tell you anything about it. I just have to take some thing and be on the road."
"But you just came home." Jack said.
"Don't worry, I'm sure i'll be home in max two days."
"Luna sent you to find someone." Dad said, but I wasn't sure was it a statement or a question.
"That is what I do."
"No,you haunt ordinary humans, but if Luna sent you than you are up against a werewolf. That is far more dangerous." Jack said angrily.
"It's ok big brother, I can handel it." I say as I tap his sholder.
"I'm comeing with you." He said as he put his hand over mine.
"I appreciate your concern brother, but the orders are clear.Only I can go, you have to be back at the manor."
He was about to protest but dad intervened.
"Kaya can do it, and if our Luna chose her it's because she trusts her, and so will we."
"Thank you dad, I'll go grab some things I need, and than have this same conversation with mom."
I gave dad a kiss on the cheek and went into the house.
"What is the deal with Jack."
Said Saf.
"He just worries,I'm his little sister after all."
"I don't know, his wolf gives me some strange vibe." Saf confeses.
"What kind of a vibe?"
"It's not a bad vibe, just a strange one." Hmm.
"He's just plain old Jack."
"If you say so."
Its a good thing I didn't unpack when I got home, makes this a lot faster. I just have to grab one important thing that is usually not on the list.
Mistletoe.
Mistletoe can be used as a cure in very small doses but if used incorrectly it can throw a werewolf on its ass in a matter of seconds. It is just my luck mom had some stashed.
"You sure it won't hurt him?"
"Dont worry Saf, It will only act as a sedative. It's not like I'm using wolfsbane."
The conversation with mom went exactly like the one with dad, only Sofia didn't show as much concern as Jack.
After I finally said goodbye and made my way to the jeep, I put the address in GPS.
"A five houre drive, you ready Saf."
"Born ready."
Four and a half hours later, we were finally close to our destination.
"No wonder the "royal" guards couldn't find him, the air here is so polluted." Saf commented.
"Its close to the human border that's why. Besides this is the neutral land, werewolves of all eleven packs can come here and is not considered trespassing."
Its about eleven at night, the night hasn't even started yet.I drove us to the hotel to freshen up and review the plan.
"With how much you get paid you could of gotten a better room."
I rolled my eyes at Saf bickering.
"So, the plan is simple. We play nice,we mingle with a group of people so we don't come off suspicious. We play coy, get him to come to us, slowly. We gain his trust and then ..."
"We put the mistletoe in his drink and watch him fall onto his ass."
"Get his ass into the jeep and deliver him to the Luna. Easy peasy lemon squeezy."It was past midnight and I was ready to put the plan in motion.
"That dress is so not our color." Saf said.
"The powdered pink colour makes me look innocent, while the formfited form of the dress gives the vibe that I'm ready to take on the night and him."
"At least lose that necklace, that yellow stone doesn't work with the dress."
"No way, you know I made a promise to never take it off."I took all of my things with me, once I find Atlas I won't be coming back here.
We got to the address, the club had a long line.Getting in could actually take forever. I scanned the girls closest to the entry and walked up to them.
"I"ll pay for the first three rounds of drinks if you let me tag along."
She looked me from head to toe before saying...
"We have a deal."
Even with being so close to the door it took us half an hour more to get in.We entered and it didn't take us long to find our target. He was sitting in the dark corner of the club, surrounded by whiskey, smoke and people.
"Kaya?" Said Saf in her squamish voice.
"What?"
"I think our plan just failed." She said as I looked into his direction. In an instant, he was by my side. His glowing eyes looking into mine as his hands found my cheeks.
I was taken a back by this, but not as much as I got after hearing him say...
"My soulmate."
There are dresses hanging from my closet door like ghosts I haven’t made peace with yet.Deep red. Forest green. Black. The silver one, Atlas's favorite option for me, the note attached to it said so. Thalia brought them yesterday with an expression that said try them on, or I’ll do it for you. I told her I’d look at them “later,” and now later has turned into staring at them while sitting cross-legged on my bed in the same hoodie I’ve worn three days in a row.The Alpha Ceremony is in four days.I’m supposed to sit in front of the entire pack, surrounded by the Council and the Ancients, close to Atlas and the whole Alpha family. People will notice, and then they will talk. I can't, I dont want to be branded as the next Luna."You never know what the future brings," Saf says. "Perhaps a day will come when you'll want nothing more than to be by Atlas's side, the Luna of Black River.""Well, that day is not today," I say as I get up from the bed and head to the window."What's the matte
The breath bursts out of him like something breaking loose. His fists slam down onto the ground, palms splayed, claws dulling back into fingernails. The blood from his fingers seeps into the dirt. But the storm...The storm is quiet.“Holy shit,” I whisper. Except… I don’t. I think I said it, but the words didn’t come out of my mouth.I feel Saf retreating.A slow easing of pressure behind my eyes, my spine straightening like it’s mine again, breath returning fully to my lungs. The control trickles back into me like light pouring into a room where all the curtains had been drawn tight. My arms are still around Atlas. He’s panting, body shaking beneath me, sweat-soaked and unguarded and too damn human now to pretend he’s anything but undone.“I didn’t mean for her to take over,” I whisper, this time really saying it. “I didn’t know she could.”He leans back just enough to look at me over his shoulder. His eyes, goddess, his eyes. They’re rimmed in shine, like never before. But with no
I slam the door shut behind me before the wind can carry his scent back inside. My hands are trembling. Not with fear, no, fear is clean. This is something messier. Shame. Frustration. Something too close to longing.“I don’t owe him anything,” I mutter again under my breath, standing on the edge of the hallway as I try to shove my foot into my boot. The strap won’t clasp. My fingers keep slipping.“Dammit,” I hiss, yanking it off, but I fight the urge to throw it across the room. I try to calm my breath and steady my fingers, then put it back on my foot.I try again, slower this time.Deep breath in.Buckle. Buckle.Loop.Click.Done.The other boot goes on easier, like it knows I’m one frayed breath away from snapping.I stand, shoulder the door open, and step outside before I can change my mind. The wind catches my hair, tugs at the edge of my shirt, and carries his scent back to me. As a concentration map appears in front of me, I just have to follow it.The world blurs. Wind sc
But I have to think about Atlas.I live in his house. I eat the food he sends. Fresh, warm, always arriving before I realize I’m hungry. Hell, I even wear the clothes he bought. Soft fabrics that fit too well, that feel like they were chosen by someone who knows how to read my body better than I can read my own reflection.I’m surrounded by his smell, his things, his care... and maybe that’s what scares me the most.Because nothing he gives me feels accidental. It all feels intentional. Purposeful. Like every gesture is a quiet question, he’s not quite asking out loud. And the worst part?It doesn’t feel suffocating. It feels safe. And it feels like I'm taking advantage of it even when I dont want to.Goddess, please help me. I dont know in what way, or what to help me with... just help me.I beg as I close the door behind me, kick off the shoes from my feet, and head for the kitchen, where, when I enter, Shaun and Thaila sit in silence. Which is not like them. It hasn't been like th
The question lingers in the air like smoke, curling around my ribs and settling somewhere I didn’t give it permission to touch.“Is it too late?”I wish I could laugh. I wish I could cry. I wish I could scream at him for asking now, only now, when things have already shifted beneath my feet, when Atlas’s touch is still warm on my skin, when my life is already wound tight around choices I made and the ones I'm about to make. But the worst part, the one that makes my stomach twist and my heart stutter, is that I don’t know the answer.Cole stands there, still and quiet and waiting. He’s not asking for permission to rewrite the past. He’s asking if there’s any version of a future where we aren’t strangers.Saf exhales in my head, tired. Almost... sad. “I hate how he does this to you,” she murmurs. “How he still makes you hope and doubt, all for nothing. He is not for us.”The words echo louder than Cole’s question.Saf isn’t cruel. She’s many things, sharp, blunt, insufferably honest, b
"You lied," Saf says. "You said you stopped fantasizing about Cole a long time ago, but you still waited for him to come back." Something she never understood. "You held onto an illusion." "Will you stop?" I ask her as I walk down the hall. The smell of warm bread is already hitting my nose, and I latch onto it like it might anchor me back in the present. She’s quiet for a beat, just long enough for me to hope she’s gone. But Saf never leaves when things get uncomfortable. "I’m not trying to hurt you," she says more gently this time. "But I'm stuck with feeling whatever emotions come through you, and that hope you have about Cole being this realization of love is suffocating."Her words slice through the warm haze of the hallway, sharper than they have any right to be.“I’m stuck with it,” she continues. “With the ache in your chest when you think of him. With the way your pulse shifts when someone just mentions his name. You think you’ve buried it deep enough, but it’s still there.
