THIRD PERSON POV

After class, Ash and Martha had suggested they get something to eat at a Café nearby, and go through their assignments together. At the Cafe, they noticed Happiness was not her usual self, and they kicked each other's legs under the table, gesturing to the other to speak up.

Martha sipped her iced coffee, her eyes narrowing on Ash as she watched Happiness shuffle through her notes, the late afternoon sunlight streaming through the windows. The three of them were sitting in their usual spot at the campus café, but something was... off.

Happiness had always been focused — almost to a fault — but today she seemed miles away, her pen tapping absentmindedly against her notebook.

“So,” Martha began, leaning forward with a sly smile, “when were you going to tell us about him?”

Happiness’s head snapped up, her brows knitting in confusion. “Him?”

“Yes. Him, of course.” Ash tilted her head, giving her friend a knowing look.

Happiness rolled her eyes, but the faint flush creeping up her neck gave her away. “There’s nothing to tell.”

Martha raised an eyebrow. “Oh, really? Because you’ve been... different lately. Lighter, somehow. And the way you just smiled when I said “him” without giving his name? Dead giveaway.”

Happiness groaned, burying her face in her hands. “You’re imagining things.”

“Am I?” Martha countered, her grin widening. “Because if you’re blushing this hard over a guy you barely care about, I’d hate to see you with someone you actually like.”

Ash snickered.

“I don’t… How do you know it's a guy?” Happiness asked, but Ash cut her off with a wave of her hand.

“Save it. We’ve known you for a while now, Happy. Something’s happening, and we don’t need you to confirm it. Just... let us be nosy and live vicariously through you.”

Happiness sighed, but there was a faint smile playing on her lips now. “Fine. What do you want to know?”

“Oh, you’ve opened the floodgates now,” Martha teased, leaning closer. “Let’s start simple. His name? Where did you guys meet? Is he a student? Do you like him?”

Happiness hesitated, her gaze dropping to the table. “That’s not simple.” She rolled her eyes at their eager faces. “Mason, and No, he is not a student. Do I like him? I don’t know,” she admitted softly. “He’s... complicated.”

“Complicated how?”

“He’s guarded. Quiet. But when he does open up, it’s like he sees right through me. It’s... unsettling.”

Ash nodded, her teasing demeanor softening. “And you? How do you feel when you’re around him?”

Happy’s fingers traced the edge of her notebook, her expression pensive. “Safe,” she said after a moment. “But also... scared. Like he could see every part of me, even the ones I’m not ready to share.”

Martha and Ash reached out at the same time, covering Happiness’s hand with their own. “That doesn’t sound like nothing, Happy.” Ash said softly.

“I know,” Happiness said with a faint laugh. “And that’s the problem.”

For a moment, they sat in silence, the chatter of the café fading into the background.

“Listen,” Martha said finally, her tone serious now. “You’ve been through a lot. It’s okay to let someone in, but it’s also okay to take your time. Just... don’t shut him out because you’re scared.”

Happy looked up, meeting Martha’s gaze. “Thanks. I hope he doesn't shut me out first.”

“Anytime. Why do you think he would?” Martha asked.

Happiness sighed, her face downcast. “He has baggages of his own.”

Ash smiled sadly. “Everyone does. You just have to compliment each other.”

Martha leaned back with a smile. “Now, about his abs — on a scale of one to ten?”

Happy groaned, throwing a napkin at her, and the tension between them dissolved into laughter.

***

The soft hum of Sandra's car engine filled the otherwise silent cabin as she pulled into the private parking garage. Her mind churned as she replayed the snippets of information she had gatherred over the past few weeks.

Mason.

Happiness.

The two names had been popping up together far more than she anticipated. At first, she had dismissed it as proximity—two people simply sharing a space due to circumstance. But now...

Now it was becoming something else.

Sandra leaned back in her seat, tapping her fingers rhythmically against the steering wheel. She had always prided herself on being one step ahead, on seeing the full chessboard while others focused on a single move. Yet, for the first time in years, she felt the faint stirrings of unease.

Happiness was meant to be a means to an end, someone who would disrupt Mason's carefully curated world without much effort. She was just there so Sandra could know if he'll open his heart again, which he did. She wasn’t supposed to mean anything to him.

And yet, she was becoming significant. Not just to Mason but to the dynamic Sandra had so carefully cultivated.

Sandra couldn’t decide if she was annoyed or impressed.

“She’s smarter than I gave her credit for,” he muttered under her breath.

With a sigh, she reached for her phone and scrolled through the most recent update from her source—discreet photos of Happiness and Mason at the market. The way Mason looked at her wasn’t the detached, calculated demeanor Sandra was accustomed to seeing after their fallout. There was something genuine there.

It unsettled her.

She tapped on one of the photos, zooming in on Mason’s face. Her love, if she could still call him that, looked unguarded, almost soft. It was a side of Mason Sandra hadn’t seen in years, when they were still together.

“That’s going to be a problem,” Sandra murmured.

The key to manipulating Mason had always been his distance. his reluctance to connect, to trust. If Happiness was breaking through that wall, she wasn’t just disrupting Mason’s life—she was jeopardizing Sandra’s control.

A knock on the window startled her out of her thoughts. She glanced up to see one of her associates, a tall man in a sharp suit, gesturing for her to roll down the window.

“Ma'am,” the man said as the window lowered. “We’ve received confirmation about the next move. The timing is perfect.”

Sandra nodded, her mind snapping back to the bigger picture. “Good. Keep it subtle. We don’t want any loose ends.”

“And the girl?”

Sandra hesitated, her gaze flicking back to the photo on her phone. She studied Happiness’s expression—bright, open, entirely unguarded. She had no idea what she had been pulled into.

For a brief moment, a flicker of doubt crossed her mind. But she quickly pushed it aside.

“Keep an eye on her,” she said finally, her tone cool. “She’s proving to be... an unexpected variable. If she gets too close to Mason, we’ll have to adjust.”

The associate nodded and stepped back, disappearing into the shadows of the garage.

Sandra stared at the photo one last time before locking her phone and stepping out of the car. The air in the garage was cool, crisp, and it did little to clear the haze of her thoughts.

As she made her way toward the elevator, a faint smirk tugged at the corner of her lips.

“Enjoy your facade while you can, Mason,” she murmured. “Because soon, it’s all going to come crashing down, and you're going to be mine again.”

Mason's POVThe sharp ring of my phone pierced through the quiet hum of my office. I glanced at the caller ID, my brows furrowing slightly at the number on the screen, one I couldn't recognize. “Hello?”“Mason, it’s Sandra.”I stiffened at the sound of her voice. It had been years since our last conversation, if I could even call it that. The last time we spoke, it was a terse exchange laced with veiled accusations and unresolved tension.“What do you want?” My voice was curt, betraying none of the unease I felt.“Straight to the point, as always,” she replied with a laugh that didn’t reach her voice. “I just thought it was time we caught up.”“We don’t have anything to catch up on.”“Don’t we?” Sandra’s tone was sweet, almost teasing. “I heard you’ve been... keeping company lately. A girl, isn’t it? Happiness, is that her name?”My grip on the phone tightened. The mention of Happiness sent a spark of protective anger through me. “What are you trying to say, Sandra?”“Oh, nothing,” s

Happiness’s POV The days felt lighter, but not without shadows. Mason’s presence was constant now, not overbearing, but steady. I wanted to trust him, to believe the promises he made. And yet, doubt clung to me like frost on a windowpane, refusing to thaw. On a crisp evening, we found ourselves in the kitchen. I was chopping vegetables for dinner, the rhythmic sound of the knife a welcome distraction from the quiet tension between us. Mason leaned against the counter, watching me with an intensity that made my hands falter. “You’re staring,” I said, not looking up. “Can’t help it,” he replied softly. “You’re beautiful when you’re focused.” I paused, setting the knife down, and finally met his gaze. “Flattery won’t make me forget, Mason.” He nodded, his expression earnest. “I’m not trying to make you forget. I just… I want you to know how I see you.” I sighed, wiping my hands on a dish towel. “Sometimes I wonder if this is all worth it,” I admitted. “If I’m worth it.” His eyes d

Happiness’s POV It wasn’t a sudden revelation or a grand gesture that changed things between Mason and me. It was the little moments, the quiet mornings when he brought me coffee, the way he asked about my day and actually listened, the way he never hesitated to reassure me when doubt crept in. We weren’t perfect, and we didn’t pretend to be. But over time, the cracks began to heal, replaced by something stronger. This evening, as we sat on the couch watching a documentary Mason had picked out, I realized how far we’d come. I wasn’t tense, waiting for the next shadow to fall. I was just… here, with him, and it felt enough. “You’re quiet,” he said, glancing at me. “Just thinking,” I replied, smiling faintly. “Good thoughts, I hope?” I nodded, leaning my head on his shoulder. “Yeah. Good thoughts.” And for once, that wasn’t a lie. Next morning, I woke up to the sound of Mason humming in the kitchen. It was a tune I didn’t recognize, but there was something comforting about it.

I've not slept with anyone before, and the nerves are starting to kick in. “Mason I–” I began then stopped, worried that if I tell him how I'm feeling, he'll stop. He paused, looking down at me intently. “What is it baby?”I don't respond to him, shaking my head as an attempt to brush it off as nothing. “Nevermind.”“Tell me,” He said, his voice firm. “What is it? You don't want to do this?” I shake my head again. “No, it's not that. It's… just that… I haven't… you know.” I shrugged. His eyes widened. “You're a virgin?” I nodded. “Do you want to do this with me?” He asked, his voice low and his eyes peered into my soul. “Yes.” He visibly relaxed, his brows furrowing as he wets his lips. “This will hurt. The room was quiet now, save for the sound of our labored breathing. Mason lay beside me, his fingers tracing idle patterns along my arm. For a moment, I thought he was asleep, but then his voice broke the silence.“I’ve never felt this way before, Happiness,” he murmured, his tone softer than I’d ever heard it.I turned to him, unsure of what to say. He looked almost vulnerable, his usual cocky demeanor stripped away.“I mean it,” he said, propping himself up on one elbow to look down at me. His eyes searched mine, and I could see the weight of his words reflected in them. “You’re different. You make me want things I thought I’d never have again.”“What do you mean?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. He sighed, running a hand through his messy hair. “I don’t talk about it much, but… what happened with Sandra hurt me so much. The next morning, I woke to an empty bed. Mason had already left for work, but the faint scent of his cologne lingered on the pillow beside me. It was a small comfort, though it did little to ease the unease stirring in my chest. The messages had stopped for now, but the silence felt more ominous than reassuring. Whoever was behind them had wanted me to find the connection to Sandra’s brother, and they’d succeeded. The next question was why and what they wanted from me.I forced myself out of bed, showered, and headed to campus. The routine of classes and tutoring was a welcome distraction, but even as I sat in the lecture hall, scribbling notes, my mind wandered back to Mason. To Sandra. To Charles.By the time I left campus, the sun was dipping below the horizon, casting long shadows across the streets. I pulled my coat tighter around me, quickening my pace. Mason had left early that morning, promising to check in after work. I knew he was doing everything he could to protect me, but I couldn’t help myself. As soon as I was alone, I found myself searching for answers.Sandra’s brother, Charles, had been a name I barely remembered from years ago. I combed through old articles online, piecing together fragments of the past. He’d been in some kind of trouble before his sudden death, but details were scarce. Mason’s name didn’t appear anywhere, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that the message was pointing to something real.Hours passed, and I barely noticed. The more I read, the more my stomach twisted. It wasn’t until I stumbled upon a report about a police raid gone wrong that everything clicked. Sandra’s brother had been at the scene. And Mason had been the officer in charge. He was arrested for the murder before he was acquitted. I sat back, my hands trembling. I didn’t want to believe it, but the evidence was right there. Mason was

The apartment felt colder without Mason. He’d left a few hours ago for a late shift, but his absence was heavier tonight. I tried to focus on my schoolwork, yet every creak of the floorboards and whisper of the wind against the windows had my nerves on edge.By midnight, I gave up. My books were abandoned on the coffee table as I curled up on the couch with a blanket, the TV humming in the background. Mason had promised to call when he was on his way home, and I was determined to wait up for him.I must have dozed off, because the next thing I knew, I was startled awake by a faint click. At first, I thought I’d imagined it. I sat up, blinking groggily at the TV, but the sound came again. A soft, deliberate noise, like a lock turning. My chest tightened. The apartment was still, the kind of stillness that prickled under your skin and warned you something wasn’t right. I glanced at the door, my breath hitching. The lock. Did I double-checke it after Mason left?“Mason?” I called out h

Happiness POV The morning light filtered through the blinds as I groggily reached for my phone. I barely slept after that message. My heart still raced every time I thought about the words: “Sweet dreams, Happy.”My thumb hovered over Mason’s contact. I wanted to call him, to tell him everything. But how could I? He was busy working on a major case, and I didn’t want to sound like a paranoid college girl afraid of her own shadow. Though I know Mason would refute that thought.Still, the text haunted me. I shook my head and told myself that it was just a prank. It was probably one of my course mates with too much time on their hands. I can count the number of people I speak to in class aside from my friends and Leah's group. As the day wore on, I tried to push the strange incident out of my mind. Between my literature class, tutoring sessions, and the girls, I managed to keep myself distracted. But as I walked into the apartment that evening, the unease crept back in.Something was

I lay still for a moment, enjoying the peace, but the quiet didn’t last long. The weight of the secret we were carrying pressed heavily on my chest. Our relationship wasn’t supposed to happen. Not like this. Carefully, I slipped out of Mason’s embrace, wrapping the blanket around me as I walked toward the window. The morning light bathed the room in soft hues, but it did little to calm the storm brewing inside me.“Why are you up so early?” Mason’s groggy voice broke the silence, making me turn. He was sitting up, and even with his hair tousled he was still handsome, a sleepy yet concerned look on his face.I gave him a small smile, though it didn’t quite reach my eyes. “Just thinking.”“About what?” He swung his legs over the side of the bed, standing and walking toward me.“Mason…” I hesitated, my fingers tightening around the edge of the

I made my way down the hallway to Happiness’s room. These past few days, I've been even more attached to her that going to bed without spending some time with her feels like something is missing.I know we've had sex a couple of times, but I try to control myself around her. The last time I almost lost it was the weekend. We had sex all night long, and I made her cum so many times. Not that I wasn't proud of it though. Yet, I don't want to be labelled as a grown man who exploits a young lady that's a decade younger than me. Exploit? What the Fuck Mason? I knocked on Happiness's door and wait for her to invite me in. “Come in.” Her alluring voice echoed from the other side of the door. I opened the door, and my gaze darted to her swallowing something on her dresser. It looks like a pill. She dropped the glass on the dresser then turned to face me, and I frowned.
