Chapter 10

Diana

But after a few steps, I run back to him again and hug him. “Thank you Billy”, I whisper against his chest, “For everything…I love you”.

Sighing, he wraps his arms around me too, crushing me in a bear hug against him, “I love you too pipsqueak and I’ll miss you”, he lets go, gently pushing me away.

“There’s no time to waste. Now go!”

I nod and dash into the trees behind the shack. Luckily, my house is at the furthest end of the Omega district and the southern border is directly behind it. I speed the entire way through the forest, ignoring the stitch in my side.

I stop a yard away when I catch sight of the sentry posts.

Taking a deep breath, I jam my hands into the pockets of my sweatpants before walking with forced casualness towards the border.

Instantly, I feel eyes train on me, scanning my form with an intensity that makes my heart skip a beat- the piercing gaze most likely coming from the hidden sentries.  Maintaining a casual facial expression is hard but I try my best, and with even and measured steps, I walk closer towards the borders.

Say you have a message for Sentinel Jones…

Say you have a message for Sentinel Jones…

Say you have a message for Sentinel Jones…

I chant to myself over and over again. My heart beats rapidly and loudly in my chest and my hands hidden in my pockets grow clammy with sweat. Against my will, my breath comes out more hurried than normal. If anyone bothers to look closer, they will definitely be able to notice that something is wrong.

I have to tamp down on the urge to nervously dart my eyes around to find the hidden sentries, but some sixth sense tells me that I would only look more suspicious if I do that, thereby increasing my chances of being caught.

Right when I was sure that those watching eyes would stop me after finding out that there is something suspicious about me, I feel them disappear. The tension in my tightly coiled body rushes out on a breath of relief.

Just one last hurdle to cross…

Walking further in, I see in the distance, some sixty or so feet away from me, the Border.

Has it been ten minutes yet?

My heart sinks as I realize that I don’t have a watch on me, so there’s no way to know how much time has passed.

If it’s too early, I would meet the sentry there and he would make me turn back. If I’m too late on the other hand, the new sentry would have taken his place already and I would still meet the same outcome.

Oh, Goddess! Oh Goddess, please!

You’ve never listened to any of my prayers. But I’m begging you now. Please. I’m begging you. Let me make it out safely goddess. If you never answer any of my prayers, at least grant me this…

Taking a shuddering breath, I square my shoulders and walk the rest of the way.

59 feet…

50 feet…

This time, I’m unable to resist taking a nervous glance around. I don’t see anyone. Just trees…and more trees…

30 feet…

15 feet…

My heart thunders, my pulse races… I expect a voice to shout out to me any time now, ordering me to turn back around. And then Beta Mason would catch me and I would be done for…

10 feet…

There are just a few steps left until I am through the border.

Oh Goddess please let me pass this…

5 feet…

3 feet…

When there’s only one more step left for me to cross the border, I stop and look back. I take a last look at what had been my home for the last twenty years and a single tear flows down my cheeks. Its not the best place but its all I’ve ever known…

And then the words flow from somewhere deep within my soul. An unknown yet ancient force guiding my tongue on the right words to utter,

“I, Diana Castellanos, accept your Magnus Aldridge’s rejection. By my will and word, I release thee from the chains of fate that bound thy soul to mine”.

The moment I utter those words, the sharp stabbing pain that had been wreaking havoc on my heart and body slowly ebbs away, leaving behind a dull ache which I’m sure would be with me for a long time to come.

And with one last step, my heart broken to tiny pieces and my self-esteem stomped in the dust, my body passes through the invisible line of the pack territory. And without another backward glance, and I dash away.
