Eva said nothing while Eugene and Old Mr. Lane looked worriedly at her.

Old Mr. Lane knew her best, and he said in a low voice, “Don’t think so much about this, Evie. We won’t go if you don’t want to. It’s just the wedding of an outsider.”

He did not see Queenie as family.

Even Eugene said to her, “That’s right. Don’t go if you don’t want to. I’m only making an appearance because I’m her father. It’s not necessary for you to attend.”
