"You're not as clever as you two think you are," Marie smirks, laughing a little as she observes her son hiding in the kitchen with her.
"What do you mean?" York hisses, shushing her as they peek out the kitchen door and watch Richard walk into one of the conference rooms with Avery and Roman, the former looking smug, and the latter still looking a bit lost."So where are your guards, oh all-mighty Alpha Lancaster?" Avery grins, throwing herself into one of the spinning chairs around the table.Richard clears his throat, sending a silent message to his daughter to behave, and she shuts her mouth and sits up properly. Her dad is rarely serious with her, so she knows to zip it and pay attention. She still doesn't appreciate that she's been left entirely in the dark about whatever is about to happen.Richard throws a set of clothes at Roman, and he catches them with an appreciative look on his face, walking into the bathroom to change, and emerging in under a minute, the dress pants and button-up shirt hugging him as though they were painted on.Avery stares at him, enjoying the view. They all sit around the table, Avery at the head, Roman on her right, and Richard on Avery's left."What I am about to ask involves both of you," Richard begins, looking very hesitant to open his mouth."I want your help in finding the Unfortunate Alpha, Roman," he announces, and Roman's brow furrows for a second. What did he just say?, Sonya gapes.Honestly, I have no idea, Avery responds to her wolf, equally baffled."Why?" He asks, raising his brow, clasping his hands on the table in front of him.Avery also leans forward, curious about what her father is going to say."Because I want to arrange a meeting between him and Avery," he states, and Avery bolts out of her seat, her face turning scarlet."Dad," she snarls, looking ready to leap at him and scratch his eyes out.Roman senses this and leaps out of his seat too, making her sit back down, and leaving his hands on her shoulders, staring at Richard evenly. With Richard involved, it wouldn't be a friendly meeting. It would be a meeting he set up with the intent of having his daughter find somebody.Richard was a great dad, and he never let anyone say a bad word about Avery's status - but he had never stopped trying to find her somebody, even when she begged him to leave it alone and wait for nature to take it's course."I won't set that up without Avery's consent," Roman states, and the older man twitches, two sets of eyes boring into him."Roman, I am asking you, Alpha to Alpha," Richard says, standing up and staring at the other man."Richard, I am asking you, as a father, to consider what you are asking me and what this says to Avery," Roman responds, letting go of Avery's shoulders as he feels her standing up.Avery is shaking with rage, and she points a finger at her father."Avery-" he tries, and she shakes her head, her face scrunched."I don't care, you had absolutely no right," she growls, and Richard's face crumbles, walking towards his daughter, but Roman stands in between them."With all due respect, Richard, I think she needs to cool off," Roman says quietly to the man, keeping an eye on Avery in case she springs at her father, "she attacked me an hour ago, and her wolf isn't fully healed yet."Avery can feel her anger simmering, but she suddenly realises why she recognises Roman's name - he's the Alpha that everyone calls the peacekeeper. That's why he's never at council meetings - he's always sorting out other people's problems."Avery, you have to understand - we can't see you go through another day like today or the other times," Richard whispers, his attention entirely focused on his daughter, and only seeming to hear half of what Roman said."Attack? Why did you attack him?" Richard mutters, and then decides it's less important than the matter at hand, mind linking Marie to come and join him.She walks in and can sense the tension in the room, raising a brow and staring at her husband. What did you do?, She links him, looking at the Alpha standing in between the pair, stopping her daughter from attacking her husband.I asked him to help me set up a meeting between Avery and the Alpha who's like her, he responds quickly, praying his wife can stop this.Marie raises a brow, walking over to behind her husband, and pulling him a few steps back."That was a choice for her to make, you should have given her the information and let her choose. You may as well be arranging a marriage for her, the way you've gone about this," she whispers in his ear, and Avery nods in agreement.Roman steps out from between them, looking hugely awkward and uncomfortable."I didn't mean to overstep. I'll be leaving now, but don't hesitate to get in contact with me if there are any more issues or questions," he says softly, turning around to walk out the door."Take her with you," Richard says suddenly, to which all three of the others respond with, "What?""For training," he says hurriedly, wringing his hands out of stress and fear of his daughter taking it wrong."What do you mean?" Alpha Roman asks, turning back around curiously and warily."She has trained under six alphas, including me. She hasn't trained in the West, though," Richard quickly elaborates. His wife and daughter are staring at him in abject horror, wondering where he's going with this.York gets mind linked by his mother and sister to get into the conference room as soon as possible, and he hurries in, having the situation explained by his aghast mother.Roman stares back, also looking very confused."She could find someone she likes on your territory!" Richard adds, and Roman breathes in so suddenly and intensely that a button pops off the shirt he's wearing."Dad, you're not the Alpha anymore," York sharply interjects, looking at his sister and her widened eyes, "watch what you say about my deputy."The hard undertone to York's voice makes Avery turn to look at him, and it makes Marie nod firmly."Roman, if you wouldn't mind going into the kitchen, I can have somebody make you some tea, or coffee if you prefer," Marie says kindly and softly, pointing towards the door that enters the kitchen.Roman nods silently, walking to where she pointed. The family clearly need time alone to talk."Have you lost your mind?" Marie roars, turning on Richard as soon as the other alpha is out of the room.Or, time to shout - either way works.York raises his brows, and grabs Avery's arm, leading her to the other side of the room."What the hell, Richard? She isn't land, or a prisoner, you don't just exchange her," Marie continues, her volume rising and her anger increasing.Richard stands there, looking a bit baffled."I just wanted her to find somebody and be happy," he stutters, and Marie turns red with anger, just like her daughter does."She doesn't need somebody to make her happy," she screams, and the two Wilcott children present wince a little bit, leaning back as if to try to escape the magnitude of her anger.York pulls Avery towards the kitchen, glancing over his shoulder apprehensively at his angry mother and his clueless father. He sits Avery down at the kitchen table, and slides a glass of water in front of her, observing her.Avery seems detached from everything happening, and he's scared - whenever she gets quiet and cold, she lashes out.Roman is sitting on a high stool at the marble bar, watching how the silent siblings interact."You can come to my pack if you want," he states nonchalantly, shrugging his shoulders.York stares at him, furrowing his brows."I'd prefer my deputy stays here, where I need her to do her job," York shoots in his direction, wrapping his arm around Avery, who sips her water in absolute silence."She could do her work from there. She wouldn't even have to leave the packhouse. If she wanted to get out of here for even a week, I would understand - absolutely no offence to you. Your father said some things in there, and I don't think he worded them as he meant to," Roman says carefully, maintaining eye contact with York."It's up to her. She can make her own decisions," York states, squeezing his older sister gently."I want to go," Avery mumbles, looking remarkably sad.The silence is deafening for a moment or two, and then Alpha Roman stands up, nodding his head."Alpha Wilcott, if you could get that paperwork done, I'll have it approved within the hour," he says quietly, putting his hand out for a hand shake.York shakes it firmly, nodding also."I'll get it done and sent over," he responds in a similarly soft and gentle tone, standing up from where he was sitting.Avery watches this exchange, standing up too."I can be on your territory tomorrow," she states stiffly, "thank you."Roman lets out a laugh, shaking his head."Don't be silly, Wilcott. I'll wait for you, my guards are almost here. I would have been with them, but I got out to stretch my legs, and then got attacked by someone," he teases gently, trying to get a smile out of her. She gives him a small smile, drinking the rest of her water before putting the glass into the sink."I'll need an hour maybe to pack, if that's okay," she says, and then shakes her head like a dog with water in
The journey is quiet and long, without much chatter in the vehicle.Avery gets restless after sleeping upright for seven hours, and her phone only amuses her for so long, until she turns to Roman."So, how much longer is it going to be until we arrive?" She finally blurts out, her voice breaking the silence, and giving the driver in the front a bit of a fright.Roman looks up from the files he has open in front of him, and observes her with a mild smile on his face."Your brother warned me you don't do well with long car journeys. It should only be another few hours, we're crossing through pack territories instead of the highways," he chuckles, pushing a pair of glasses back up his nose.I like those, Sonya chirps up in Avery's mind, giving her a bit of a fright too - so the little bitch had decided to come back. Avery liked the glasses too, but she wasn't going to tell him that - his ego seemed big enough."How long is a few hours? I need to go to the bathroom," Avery frowns, crossi
Roman eyes both women carefully.Avery looks slightly amused, keeping her gaze fixed on the woman, looking straight through Roman.Amelia is seething, snarls leaving her mouth.Roman sighs, shaking his head at them both."Mother, being an Unfortunate isn't a terrible thing," he reprimands, before turning to Avery, "you need to work on your temper."Avery knows she does, so she stays quiet, instead opting to take a seat, watching Amelia like one would watch a tiger."How dare you defend her!" Amelia gasps, before storming out of the room in a huff."I'm very sorry about her," Roman states, before walking back to his desk, "since my father died, she has been prone to mood swings."Avery nods in understanding, "I heard about his death. We couldn't attend due to a rogue attack. My father always speaks of yours highly."With all of this being said, the two sit in silence for a moment."So, what's your favourite colour?" Roman asks, pulling out a ring binder with various coloured pages scat
It was a minor miracle that she had a set of workout gear that matched. She had a lot of half sets with her, but none matched, bar the bubblegum pink set she had put on.Dousing herself in sunscreen, she eats some of the pretzels she got on their journey to here, rubbing her face to try wake herself up.Securing her bun with an extra hair tie, she laces her trainers on, and throws a sweatshirt over her sports bra - she isn't sure where these guys prefer to train, and if it's indoors, she'll probably be cold.Grabbing her phone, and securing it in the pocket of her leggings, she bounces out of her room, trying to figure out where the gym is.Sonya snarls at her, and Avery rolls her eyes, tapping into her sense of smell to find her way downstairs. She manages to catch Alpha Roman's scent, and decides to follow it - he was the one who brought her up through this maze, so he should lead her out of it.Following the trail intensely, she sticks to one side of the wall, noting the immense nu
As the kid advances, her referee clambers up into her post, waving at Avery frantically to beckon her over.Avery walks over to the girl, leaning down so that she can speak with ease."Hello Deputy Alpha, thank you for allowing me to take this position. His name is Marcus, he's 17, and he is training under the Chief Warrior to take his place soon," the girl whispers and then pauses, looking around as if trying to remember something. "And my name is Kate," she adds after a moment in the same hushed tone, giving Avery a small, nervous smile."Thank you, Kate," Avery gives her a toothy grin before turning around and walking to her corner, watching this Marcus boy.He looks devious, and Avery takes an instant dislike to him. He whips off his shirt and throws it out of the door of the cage as she did with her sweatshirt."Um, no killing, no maiming, no weaponry attacks in this fight. Each round will last four minutes, and there will be three rounds, and whoever can pin the other for more
Marcus jumps up and grabs onto the ceiling too, his long frame making it easy for him.He aims a kick at her midriff, which she blocks quickly. While she blocks that kick, he projects himself at her like a missile, using his weight to knock her to the ground."Bastard," she hisses as he kicks her in the side while she's on the ground.Grabbing one of his feet, she rolls and pulls him down, too, before leaping off of the ground, and giving him a hard kick to the side also.Well, one became four, but she stops after six, not wanting to be too unfair.Marcus struggles to get up, and Avery makes a note of this information. She quickly puts him into a chokehold, sitting down behind him as he hits and claws at her arms. She loosens her hold enough for him to be able to breathe a little easier, but she maintains her control on him.The whistle blows again, and Kate looks mildly baffled."The score remains One-Zero. There is no clear winner of this round," she declares, waiting for the pair t
"Go," Avery shouts, turning on some upbeat pop music. She walks along the lines of sparring teenagers, her eyes watching sharply for any mistakes, with Kate beside her."What should she have done there instead of punch?" Avery murmurs to her, pointing at a pair of girls."Kick, and then get out of the arm-span area of the opponent?" Kate suggests, and Avery nods in approval.Once they get to the end, they stop and turn to overlook the hall."Get two knives," Avery orders, then pauses, "actually, get four."Kate doesn't question it, quickly hurrying off the collect the four knives from the rack. She gets four hunting knives, long and light to carry.Once Kate comes back, Avery takes two knives and stares at her."Try to attack me. I won't harm you, but try to attack me," she says to the shy girl, and Kate takes a step back, shaking her head."If you're gonna be a tracker, your best defence is weaponry," Avery quickly adds, seeing the girl twitch - she knew that would be the teenager's
She doesn't remember most of the walk up to her room, because she was doing her best to contain her temper. She wishes she hadn't given out about the kids, in front of the kids - but she can't go back and stop herself now. They all seemed to brighten up when she complimented all of them, which is a thing she likes to do in her training sessions. Kids don't achieve their potential if they get shouted at all the time with no positive reinforcement.Stripping off her workout gear, she remembers she left her sweatshirt in the gym.Cursing herself, she writes it down on a post-it note - she'll get it after her shower.Snatching a towel from the wardrobe, and her shower products, she stomps into her bathroom, letting a screech of frustration out while the water heats up.She really couldn't believe how under-trained those kids were. Every pack does things differently, but she could beat the future Chief Warrior with minimal effort, and mild bruising.Closing the bathroom door, and locking i
In the years that follow, Avery and Roman's love story continues to unfold with its share of ups and downs, but their unwavering commitment to each other remains unchanged. They face new challenges as their children grow older and navigate their own paths in life.Hallie, now a teenager, inherits her parents' strong leadership qualities and shows a natural inclination towards diplomacy and problem-solving. She becomes actively involved in pack affairs, working alongside Avery and Roman to create a more inclusive and harmonious community. Hallie's compassion and sense of justice inspire those around her, earning her the respect and admiration of both pack members and neighboring packs.Parker, on the other hand, discovers a deep love for music and art. His creative spirit flourishes as he explores various forms of artistic expression, capturing the hearts of many with his talent. Avery and Roman wholeheartedly support his passion, enrolling him in music lessons and art classes to nurtu

They become known not just for their individual accomplishments but for their collective impact on the world around them.Milo's veterinary clinic grows into a sanctuary for animals in need, providing care and rehabilitation for injured and abandoned creatures. His dedication to their well-being inspires others to foster empathy and compassion for all living beings.Hallie's art transcends the boundaries of galleries, adorning public spaces with colorful murals that uplift and unite communities. Her work becomes a catalyst for conversations about social justice and environmental stewardship, reminding people of the interconnectedness of all living things.Parker's research and advocacy work on marine conservation gain global recognition. Roman stammers, caught off guard by Milo's question. "Well, uh... I suppose it could be," he mumbles, rubbing the back of his neck nervously.Avery's laughter fills the room, and she walks over to Roman, placing a gentle hand on his arm. "Milo, sweetheart, your dad and I have already made a commitment to each other. But finding this ring again just reminds us of the importance of our bond," she explains, giving Roman an affectionate smile.Milo rolls his eyes playfully. "I know you guys are already together, but still, proposing with a ring that got thrown into a lake? That's pretty cool," he says, grinning mischievously.Roman chuckles, relieved that Milo isn't disappointed by his response. "Well, I can't argue with that," he says, pulling Milo into a playful headlock. "You're a smart kid, you know that?"As they engage in their playful banter, Hallie tugs at Avery's hand, looking up at her with wide eyes. "Mommy, does that mean you and Daddy are gonna get married again?"Avery's hea
"Mom, what's this?" Milo asks, his hands flying through Avery's old wooden jewellery box.The nine-year-old is excitable and energetic, and Avery is half asleep still."What's what?" She asks, covering her yawn with her hand while she leans in the doorway.Roman can hear the two of them from the bed and inwardly groans. If Milo is awake, that means four-year-old Hallie and one-year-old Parker are going to follow soon."This circle," he says innocently, pulling a small metal ring out of the box."That's a ring, sweetheart," Avery explains, walking over to where he stands. She wraps an arm around him, pulling him to her and kissing his temple."You don't wear rings," Milo frowns, his nose scrunching up when Avery kisses his head."I found that when I stayed at dad's pack, literally years ago," Avery realises, gently prying the old ring out of Milo's hand and examining it.Some of the original chain is still attached, but it's mostly broken off, which she understands is almost definitely
"I can't do all of the work," Avery snaps, snatching the boiling pot off the stove and switching it off."Hallie, honey, hands away from the hot stuff," Avery strains to sound sweet, giving her daughter a small smile."Sorry, mommy," Hallie mumbles, the tiny child wandering back over to the kitchen table."I'm not asking you to do all of the work," Roman retorts, manoeuvring around their child to get over to Avery."I came home from a weekend-long Council meeting to the house looking like a junkyard. Which had been set on fire," she reminds him, her eyes flashing irritably as she mixes her homemade vegetable sauce."What did you expect to come home to? We have a three-year-old," he reminds her, equally annoyed and snappy.Hallie watches the two of them with wide eyes, swinging her legs from the high stool she managed to clamber onto."I am three months pregnant, working two full-time jobs, and raising our daughter basically by myself. I cannot do this," Avery snarls, slamming the pot
Her left hand rests on her bump as she brushes through her hair with her right, exhaustion apparent on her face as she fixes herself for her meetings.Putting the brush down onto the dressing table, she slowly hauls herself up from her stool, wincing as her back aches at the sudden movement.Roman can hear movement from where he is in the bathroom, and he quickly hurries out, his eyes widening as he spots his very pregnant mate moving around."Ave, I told you to call me!" He scolds, and she scowls at him, slapping his hand off her arm."I'm not an invalid, I'm just pregnant," she scoffs, waddling around the room to find a hat."Yes, very pregnant," he reminds her with a frown, grabbing a tan wool hat for her.It matches the only coat she wants to wear nowadays, so he figures that she can't be too upset at his pairing of the two.She stares at it for a moment, taking it off him gently and cramming it onto her head roughly, glancing at the time."I can drive you if you give me two minut
It feels like everyone Avery has ever known is staring up at her intently. She can feel sweat building up on the back of her neck, and she tugs gently at the silk scarf hanging around her neck as she glances up at Roman."You're probably wondering why we called this pack meeting," Roman begins, and looks down at Avery. He raises an eyebrow at her.Are you going to continue, or do I have to keep talking?, he asks urgently, and Avery has to hold back a smile. She likes knowing that he's just as nervous as she is, because he doesn't usually express much emotion, especially in front of either of their packs. Both packs together?Forget it.I might faint if I try to talk, she responds, and she isn't lying.Sonya has gone radio silent out of absolute fear, and Avery herself feels ridiculously light-headed.You can face down packs of rogues and vampires, but a speech makes you crap yourself? Really?, Avery grumbles to a slightly miffed Sonya. Those rogues aren't expecting me to make a speech
She lays the white plastic down on the counter, brushing the strand of hair that fell into her face away from her eyes."They're all positive," she murmurs, looking over her shoulder to a very pale Roman."I think I'm going to be sick," he whispers, sinking down against the cupboards."Don't lean against the wood, you'll get blood on it," she snaps, washing her hands in the kitchen sink.He absentmindedly reaches around to his back and begins unclipping his chest plate, staring at the pregnancy tests on the kitchen island.Avery slaps his hands away and unclips his armour for him, gritting her teeth."Stupid," she growls, and he looks up in alarm, raising his eyebrows in confusion."What did I do?" He asks, slowly hauling himself up from the ground."Not you, me," she sighs, shaking her head miserably."What are you talking about, you crazy girl?" He furrows his brows, wrapping an arm around her shoulders, pulling her towards him gently."I've constantly been shifting, and I just foug
"Yeah, I did, I'm not being responsible for getting them all back to their rooms later," she chuckles, glancing out the window."Do you know how many people are going home tonight?" Roman calls from the bathroom, turning the water back on."I think a few Alphas are, but I'm not sure," she responds, laying the makeup she's using for the dinner dance out on the dresser."Oh, I thought everyone would stay for the dinner," he shouts, and she nods to herself."Some of the Alphas are really annoyed that they didn't rank too well, I'd say they're running home with their tails tucked between their legs," she sighs, and she reaches into her suitcase to find her hair products.Do you want to join me in here?, Roman links her, and Avery raises her eyebrows, trying not to laugh. No thanks, I don't want to get my hair wet, she snorts, quickly replying to some of the emails while she waits for him to get out of the shower. As soon as he opens the bathroom door, she breezes by him, clutching towels
