Jackson's POV

I entered Kylie's apartment, tension building between us within it greeting me in the shape of the second I opened the door. Something was off, something I couldn't even put my finger on. Kylie was the ultimate control freak, image of calm and composed. Tonight. Tonight cracks began to form.

She was hunched over the couch, her eyes empty, almost empty, looking at nothing. Her tense body was curled into a mat and knotted in sheer determination. I could sense the tension between us, the unspoken words still hanging in the air.

"Hey," I growled softly, moving towards her. I tried casual, but something at the bottom of my chest grasped onto it. "You okay?"

She glared at me, night's darkness carved into her face, line of fatigue. She wasn't speaking, not yet anyway, and I just hoped that she would continue playing her old armor wall for just another couple of seconds longer. And then she pitched forward, sour breath trapped behind her teeth as the universe closed in around he

Kylie's POVThe moment I entered the boardroom, tension hung over me like a brick wall. There were whispers behind me, every voice dropping, and every eye on me. The air was thick, thick with anticipation. I could feel their silent judgments, their unspoken criticisms hanging over me like a physical heavy weight. They had demanded drama, and I knew Rachel had been stirring trouble, planting seeds of doubt in the ear of whoever would hear.I wouldn't give them the satisfaction of seeing me covering. Shoulders set and expression blank, I walked forward to assume my seat at the long, black mahogany table ahead of me. Bhutan's top officials were on the other side of me, their faces contorting from contempt to sheer venom. And grinning that aggravating smile, at the far end of the table, was Rachel. She was so poised, so confident, as if she had already won already.I leaned back in my chair, my hands carefully placed on the table. I was not going to be intimidated. Today. It was sinewy-gr

Jackson's POVI simply couldn't shake the maddening impression that so much more was being schemed than we'd yet seen. Starting with Kylie's outrageous boardroom showdown, I knew Rachel wasn't working by herself. Something in her manufactured smile and manipulated answer when interrogated with questions set off warning bells ringing about strong forces being behind her. I sat ready to sift through some, ready to learn what had been withheld in order to reveal to us the depth of her treachery.I spent the evening hunched in my little office, the light of my computer screen illuminating a room full of papers and Styrofoam cups with a half-empty coffee. I started by filling a folder with email submissions and meeting minutes of each lead linking Rachel to external manipulation. I filled a folder with incriminating events within seconds. Repeated phone calls on a line not mine but that dealt with banking activity unrelated to outlining Rachel's situation took up most space in it. My heart

Kylie's POVI wasn't the lie. The scandal affair.rumor.me and James and me having an affair…nowhere. The scandal made me desperate and unprofessional-looking, a whitewash of my supposed failures. Cold blood ran through my veins with every glance at the headline. I knew that I had to know who had done this to me.I was stubborn and went right on up to the journalist who wrote the story. I spoke to him in one of the small offices in the area. And as at last we sat to question him, he became hot-tempered and profane. I had no time for games."Have you been told to concoct this imaginative article?" I chastised reasonably but warmly. "Who told you to cut this made-up story together? The journalist shifted uncomfortably in his chair. "I don't say," he growled, not meeting my eyes. "It's not my story. I just report what I'm told."I braced myself for a fight, fury flashing in my eyes. "Someone's trying to get me out of the picture, it seems. I want to know who. Who's feeding me this lie?"H

Jackson's POVI could not shake off the tension built up over the past weeks. The plot against Kylie had grown too huge to be ignored, and it was time we hit back in a way that would force the enemy to step out into the open. Kylie and I had gone over every detail, every possible mole in her inner circle. The verdict was one: we had to set a trap.We suggested keeping it straightforward but risky: plant fictions that Kylie was negotiating a major new deal. In the remote chance of this contract being leaked to the media, we'd have sure that there was an individual in her inner circle who was our mole. I even pictured cogitatin' going through my mind as we negotiated about the best minutiae undercover during a telephone call one evening with Kylie."Kylie, I've got some news regarding a potential investor—one who is willing to do a massive partnership. It's massive, and it'll rock things for sure," I said to her, my voice low and contained. I did not tell her that all of this was fabric

Kylie's POVI was only just settling down from the cruel series of stabbing and company insanity when my door knocked to break the taut quietness of my lounge. I did not expect to have anyone—a least of all Rachel. Heart racing, I opened the door, half-suspecting the cunning smile, steeling myself for yet another battle. And to my astonishment, what I saw there was raw vulnerability.I hesitated for a moment, unsure of what to do. The venom, the haughty air always so typical of Rachel, was in no place to be found. Sizable, quivering eyes widened and clenched fists trembled in her hands."Rachel?" I asked softly and cautiously, attempting to remain calm but prepared to fight. "What in the world are you doing here? She halted, her throat closing in as if the words stuck there. "I…I wanted to see you," she finally spoke, softer than she generally spoke. I could quite clearly see the weight of regret in each word.My mind spun in suspicion. I braced myself for round two of fighting, expec

Kylie's POVI sat at my desk, staring at the papers spread out before me, the burden of all of the secrets and all of the lies spread out before me. The last few weeks had been a nightmare—Rachel's betrayal, the VP's behind-the-scenes maneuvering, and the specter of an international competitor looming over my head all threatening to destroy me. But today, I was taking back Bhutan.I phoned James first. The low, level voice answered, and I didn't waste a moment. "James, we must talk—today. We need to map the counterattack.".James was in my office within minutes, his face set in a grim expression. Jackson followed close on his heels, and we held a hurried war council in my office. We were somber and serious-faced. I presented all of the evidence that we had gathered over the last several weeks—emails, bank records, internal memos—all of them pointing to the Vice President as the leaker of state secrets and aider and abettor of foreign enemies."Check this out," I said to her, pointing

  • The Ex-Wife Revenge Plan.   Chapter 44

Jackson's POVKylie had been so stressed out the past few weeks, and I knew she could benefit from a break. Tonight, I was going to give it to her. We'd just emerged victorious in a small skirmish—a gargantuan battle with the people who were trying to destroy everything that she'd worked for. The VP was behind bars, the papers full of our revenge, and although the war was far from over, I could sense a glimmer of relief in Kylie's gaze. I prayed that she might take a few hours' breath free.I drove her home at night in my car. The ride was silent, but not tense; a hush of knowing that this evening the world is not coming in on us. I glanced over at her in the back. She was so exhausted, with such downturned eyes, loaded with lies and tension, but there was something gentler this night: a candlelit radiance of hope. When I pulled up to her apartment complex, I coasted my car to a stop and knocked on her door. She had already opened it, her face twisted in a mixture of surprise and reli

Kylie's POVI did not sleep much last night. Woken at dawn by a call telling me that yet another lawsuit had been filed against Bhutan…one that could ruin all I had struggled to achieve. I rushed to my office, my heart pounding, and began fitting the pieces together. It was not a new lawsuit. It was the final competitor's final stab, a carefully staged attack meant to bring our firm down once and for all.I stared at stacks of lawsuit papers covering my desk and screaming desperation and urgency on every page. The veteran shadow competitor had raised the stakes. They constructed this newest lawsuit on flimsy assumptions and fabricated statistics, intended to undermine investor confidence and push the board into a corner. I knew I was fighting not just for my company and reputation but the future of Bhutan. If I lost this battle, I would lose everything—company, legacy, and Bhutan's future."Not again," I muttered to myself, slamming the folder shut. The pressure was already building.

Kylie's POVI was at the podium in Bhutan's Grand Conference Hall of Annual General Meeting. The auditorium was electric, and everyone's eyes were fixed on me. I took a deep breath, for I knew that the time was now to speak out loud before our adversaries. I had to remind everybody why we established Bhutan – on trust, courage, and shared vision that no betrayal could break."Good morning," I began, my own voice steady in spite of the tremble of feeling under it. "Today we are at a crossroads. Our company has been betrayed, sabotaged from the inside out, and tear after tear assaulted by those who would love to destroy us. But I ask you each: what did we build here in Bhutan? We built something of infinitely more value than the sum of our losses.". We founded a heritage in trust, in innovation, and the unconquerable faith that together we are capable of any achievement. I broke pause, eyes on the audience, looking from board to staff to meeting every face. "I know some of you are anxi

Kylie's POVI sat in the quiet of my office, staring at the coded messages on my computer screen. The proof we had gathered in the past weeks was all too much, but now another turn of events had been revealed. Reports were emerging that Emily might be innocent—that everything that had been said against her was part of a larger scheme to frame her. My heart pounded with uncertainty as I tried to keep up with it all.I picked up the phone and called Jackson. "Jackson, is the latest news on Emily verified? There are whispers that she is not the leaker after all."The soothing voice of Jackson came back, "Kylie, I'm analyzing the logs. Preliminary results show inconsistencies that contradict the finding that Emily is a leaker. The intercepted information that we received could have been altered."My head reeled. "Manipulated? That would mean that someone is orchestrating a setup. Who would have a stake in that?"There was silence on the line before Jackson said, "We believe it may have so

Emily's POVI woke up to the persistent ringing of my phone. My secure channel glowed with urgent messages. My heart sank as I read the title of one of them: "Corporate Theft Allegations – Immediate Action Required." I couldn't believe it. The evidence that Austin had passed to me, the one that I had kept with so much precaution, had been leaked. I was accused of corporate theft.I sat up, my heart pounding, and called Kylie right away."Kylie, we have a problem," I tried to say matter-of-factly.Her voice was frosty on the phone. "What is it, Emily?"I hesitated for just a split second before continuing, "Some inside information has been leaked out. They say it's proof that I've stolen company money. I didn't do it, Kylie—I swear I would never."There was a terribly lengthy silence on the line before she finally spoke back with, "Emily, you are going to have to tell me what is happening. This testimony—if it incriminates you as an abettor to theft, then you know what that would be li

Austin's POVI walked back and forth beneath the harsh lights of the empty, frigid parking lot outside an old industrial facility, the weight of my choice bearing down on me. Tonight was my only chance to break up the syndicate operation—a chance that would finally redeem my choices. I glanced at my secure phone; the message from my informant confirmed the time. One of the offshore accounts of the syndicate was poised to send them a huge quantity. If I can capture that transaction, chances are high I can shut their business down.I took a deep breath and muttered to myself, "This is it, Austin. For Bhutan. For Kylie. For everything we built." I zipped my coat, mopped the sweat from my brow, and walked toward the building. My hands were shaking as I gripped the tool I had made. I had devised a specific tool to temporarily cut off the data stream of the account for a few seconds—five minutes should be enough to create havoc.Inside the building, I crept quietly down the corridors in low

James's POVI remained at my station long after the buzz that had developed since the latest internal strife. Austin was gone—removed from the inner echelons—and the betrayal seared me. Although he left a void, our mission did not shift: protect Bhutan at all costs. I needed to piece the fragments together and ensure our unit was intact. No time for regret; we had a job to do.I opened my encrypted email and scanned the messages that had poured in since the board meeting. Messages from Marcus, Ravi, and Elena painted a picture of a company fighting to keep up with external sabotage and internal betrayal. I breathed deeply and began composing my response to the crisis update.Team, we must increase immediately," I typed: "Austin's betrayal is confirmed. Our systems have recorded a number of intrusions. We must focus on beefing up our web and legal protection. I require full reports on all anomalies by 0800 GMT. Let's show them that Bhutan stands united.".I sent it and reclined, allowi

Kylie's POVI couldn't shake my mind of the nagging sense that something actually was amiss. For weeks there'd been a growing gnawing bad feeling about Austin's behavior. I'd relegated it to the back of my mind—Austin and I had worked together for years and created Bhutan into being, for Pete's sake.—but information seepped in gradually, as hairline cracks in concrete, until I found the fact: Austin lied to me.I was sitting in my office late one evening, dazed and trembling as I got my faithful men's report. It had within it suspicious actions and messages that indicated Austin's affair with the syndicate. Every piece of information was like a dagger to my heart. I had no time to lose.I grabbed my secure phone and called Austin. It rang twice or three times before he answered, his voice tense, "Austin here."I swallowed. "Austin, I need to tell you something. Now."There was a silence on the other end of the line. Then he spoke at last, "Okay, Kylie. We can talk."I've chosen all th

Austin's POVI stood outside the courthouse, my hands shaking as I read the deal for the umpteenth time on my encrypted tablet. Today was the day I signed with the syndicate. It was a risk, I knew that. I didn't have a second option, though, so it appeared. The syndicate stood over an ultimatum threat: sabotage Kylie's next negotiation or lose everything. I could feel the seriousness of this choice hanging over me as I looked at the paper. My mind was filled with questions and memories of our past together, of the trust we once had with Kylie. But I also knew that by signing on the dotted line, I had the power to silently retaliate.I took a deep breath and entered. The waiting room was cold and antiseptic. I approached the counter, and the woman behind it smiled politely at me. "Good morning. How can I help you?""Good morning," I whispered. "I'm here to sign. I'm Austin Price."The woman rummaged through the visitors' register. "Yes, Mr. Price. Please sit down. Your contact will att

Emily's POVI leaned back in my office chair, rubbing my temples. My mind reeled with worry over the heightened threat from the consortium and the surprising turns in our own internal infrastructure. I knew that I had to take a gambler's risk if we were ever going to regain control. Then I remembered a plan I had been working on for some time: trying to contact one of Rachel's large contributors. I had been informed he maintained a string of off-the-books deals for her. If I could get to know him, perhaps I might have inside knowledge at my fingertips. That night, I attended a business mixer at trendy downtown lounge. I dressed in my finest attire, trying to look confident and comfortable. I scanned the room for the financier, working my way through the tight crowd. I spotted him near the bar. He was in a discussion with some co-workers. I was nervous and breathed in deeply before approaching."Hi, I'm Emily," I extended with a friendly smile, offering my hand. The man smiled and took

Jackson’s POVI was hunched over my workstation late one night when the encrypted communication arrived. The screen glowed softly as the ciphered text scrolled across. My instincts told me that this was important…more than the usual noise from the enemy’s channels. I leaned forward and opened the decryption module."Come on, show me what you’ve got," I muttered under my breath as I fed the encrypted string into the system. The code slowly unraveled on the screen, and I caught sight of familiar keywords: names I had seen before, including an alias associated with one of our Bhutan insiders. My eyes widened when I read that the message linked this insider to Rachel’s new startup…company that had come up in several of our intelligence reports as part of the rival consortium’s latest moves.I grabbed my phone and messaged Mia, "Mia, I need you to run a full check on the encryption logs for this file. It mentions an insider at Bhutan and Rachel’s new startup. Confirm details ASAP." Her r
