Chapter 45: Never Come Near Max

"Free to go?" she asked, her voice shaking with disbelief. "What do you mean? What changed?"

"I can't discuss it with you," the officer said, his tone firm. "You're free to go, that's all you need to know. We're sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you."

Carmela just stared at him, still stunned. She couldn't believe what she was hearing. After everything that had happened, she couldn't understand why they were letting her go now.

Carmela's mind was racing as she tried to make sense of what was happening.

She stood up, her legs shaky.

Was this some kind of a trick? Were they planning on arresting her the moment she stepped outside?

But the officers didn't move to stop her. In fact, they were ushering her towards the door. She felt like she was in a dream, everything felt surreal.

She walked out the door, blinking in the bright sunlight. She turned to look at the building behind her, trying to make sense of it all.

"Congratulations, Carmela!" Andrew said, his voice warm
