"I absolutely will not!" I rolled my eyes.
Tears filled his eyes again, but this time he held them back. He knew better than to cry in front of his people.
"You're a cruel leader!" Rhys accused me. "Why is your brother not in charge?"
"I don't want to marry Hunter either!" Zeke proclaimed.
Father chuckled."That was actually funny."
"I lack the confidence and overall leadership skills that Zelda has." Zeke informed them. "Plus she looks better in the dresses."
"Recycled joke." I muttered.
"I think we should all take a breath." Mother said camly. "My daughter is a brilliant ruler, and she is doing a noble thing by letting you into our home."
"She is doing her duty, like she is supposed to." Enya rolled her eyes before attempting to take a drink from her cup.
Mother clasped her hand, causing the liquid to evaporate from Enya's cup. "And it is my duty to remind you that my daughter will not be disrespected!"
"Thank you Mother." I smirked before taking a drink from my cup.
"I need a refill on my drink!" Enya snapped.
One of the girls hurried to pour her more wine. I tried my best not to look disgusted. Then Penn caught my eye and all the disgust left my body.
It was replaced with attraction and burning.

Even though his parents were assholes, I still agreed to talk to Hunter after supper. My parents were right, we should be able to work together.
"Have you thought more about my proposal, Empress Zelda?"
"The answer is still no, Hunter. I think we would be better off as friends."
"Friends?"
"Yes! Comrades, buddies, pals." I playfully punched his arm. "If we don't have a friendship we cannot defeat the Aleni. That is what's more important don't you think?"
"Um, sure, why not? And then maybe down the road we can talk about a more romantic friendship. Get to know each other, fall in love, lose our virginities."
I snorted. "Lose our virginities, that's funny."
"Why is that humorous?" Hunter questioned.
"You're not really a virgin right?" I asked. "That's a joke?"
"Of course not. I have been saving my body for my mate...for you."
"Oh shit. Um, I definitely didn't do that." I admitted.
"You've been with other men?"
"I'm an Empress, Hunter. Almost every man in this kingdom wants to be in my bed. And sometimes I allow them to be."
"Oh. Well that is okay. I can live with that. My body will still be for you only. Consider it a gift to you."
"Aw, you really shouldn't have." I forced a laugh. "Um, so we're friends right?"
"Of course, Empress Zelda."
"Good...so tell me about Penn."
Hunter frowned. "Beta Penn?"
I nodded. "Does he have a mate or anything like that?"
"We all have mates."
"Has he met her yet?"
"No he has not."
"And is he doing that adorable celibacy thing that you do or has he had a few romps in the werewolf hut or wherever you live?"
"Beta Penn is not a virgin, why do you ask?" Hunter questioned.
"Well he is your right hand man, I want to familiarize myself with him." I shrugged.
I wanted to be very familiar with him.
"Oh...you really are a very dedicated ruler." Hunter smiled.
"Yes, I am. I plan to be very dedicated to this particular subject." I grinned. "So I'm fatigued and exhausted, I must get some rest. We can discuss strategy over breakfast tomorrow. The Aleni wait for no one."
"Good night, Empress Zelda." Hunter took my hand and kissed it. "Sweet dreams. If you find your bed uncomfortable and lonely, mine is available."
He's a virgin, what the hell would we even do? Grope each other above our clothes? No thanks.
"Thank you Hunter. Goodnight."
Posy was waiting for me in my chambers. "Please don't tell me you've accepted that oaf's proposal."
"Oh please, why would I do that? I certainly don't have the hots for him!" I laughed.
"Really? He is attractive."
"Then you be his mate."
"No thank you." Posy giggled. "Are you worried about the Aleni?"
"At first I wasn't and then hearing Hunter's story...I'm not sure we can defeat them. I mean half of his pack wiped out? That's a bit out of my league isn't it?" I whispered.
"Nothing is out of your league, Zelda. You just truly have to take this seriously. Everyone is counting on you."
"Yeah, no pressure at all. I just have to be perfect and work with this ridiculous Alpha and save our world as we know it."
"Exactly." Posy shrugged. "Easy peasy right?"
"I should have never taught you about sarcasm. It really has only made my life worse."
"What I'm here for."
"You actually make my life significantly better." I admitted.
"Thank you for standing up for me today. It means so much." Posy's wings twitched a little.
"You're my sister Posy. You have every right to hold the position that you do. The Luan pack are assholes."
"Really cute though. Especially that Penn."
"Yeah he's something." I smiled.
"Zelda, be careful. We don't know what they're like. And to get involved with a Beta may cause trouble with the Alpha who swears you're his life mate." Posy pointed out.
"Oh what's Hunter gonna do to me? Not make me a Luna? I welcome that."
"It's more what he'll do to Penn."
I didn't think of that. Hunter couldn't punish me, but Penn could be punished. This is why I needed Posy. She reminded me to think outside my own world.
"I will be careful." I promised. "We should get some sleep. It's going to be a big day tomorrow."
Posy hugged me tightly. "Good night Zelda."
"Goodnight. Also could you do me a favor and use some of your sleepy persuasion on Hunter? Don't want him getting any ideas if he can't sleep." I smiled.
"You got it. And I may curse his parents with nightmares."
"Well the first night in a new place is always the hardest."
As always, I watched from my door as Posy went down the hall to her room and closed the door.
I had actually planned to go to sleep, but as I was closing my door I saw another door open. It was Penn's. He quietly slipped out of his room and took off down the hall. As Empress, it was my duty to follow him and see what the hell was up.
I made sure to be very quiet and follow at a distance. I had a feeling he didn't exactly want to be followed, but I deserved to know everything that occurred in my kingdom.
I shivered slightly as I followed Penn outside. It was chilly. If only I knew how to control fire. He went into the forest and stopped when he came to the clearing. He put a pile of wood together before looking around.
Was he going to shift into his werewolf form? I wondered what color he was and if he was gentle the way Zeke was when he transformed.
Penn's focus went back to the pile of wood. He held out his hand and my eyes widened as fire shot out of his fingertips.
He does have powers!
"How did you do that?" I asked.Penn jumped and extinguished the fire. "Um, I just rubbed some wood together.""I saw you, Penn. You produced that from your hands.""No, no I didn't.""Are you lying to an Empress?" I challenged. "That's a crime.""And what would be my punishment?" Penn gulped."Death.""Empress, please…""Fine, I'll give you a warning since you didn't know. Now tell me how you did that?"Penn sighed. "I don't know, I'm just able to. It started last year and it freaked me out. Werewolves aren't supposed to have
He merely stared at me for a second before swiping his giant claw at me. I cried out feeling the claws penetrate my arm. Okay this was not Cedric. I used the wind to throw him back. He got back up but before he could attack, a grey wolf jumped out from behind me. I knew immediately it was Penn. His mouth clamped down on the Aleni's arm, causing a roar to escape him. His claws slashed at Penn's side. He let out a yelp as he released the arm. The Aleni slashed him once more. I had to do something. As the Aleni went in for the kill, I summoned a vine to wrap around his neck, yanking him back. I urged the vines to wrap tighter and tighter until a sickening crack could be heard. The Aleni fell limpy to the ground. I watched Penn limp away. I assumed to c
The Wanix were losing their minds. No one had ever punched the Empress in the face. And if they had they surely hadn't lived to tell the tale.I could hear them shouting and someone definitely threatened Hunter with decapitation. Well this wasn't good for our alliance at all.I slowly opened my eyes and saw Zeke leaning over me. "Zel, you okay?""Is my nose bleeding?" I groaned."Just a little bit. At least we finally have proof you're not a vampire.""I still want to know who started that nasty rumor." I said as he helped me up."Empress Zelda, I am so so sorry!" Hunter cried. "Really, it was an accident. I would never intention
"Let me get this straight," I laughed. "I'm both of your mates?"Penn nodded. "It seems so, Zelda.""So then we can be together, right? I mean Ms. Moon Goddess said so herself. We have the go ahead." I pulled him to me. "So can I start the flirtations up again?"Penns slowly wrapped his arms around me. As always my body warmed up at his touch. "You are making this so hard.""I'm hoping to. It's easier that way, you know?""While you're my mate, you're also Hunter's. He's already accepted you.""So you accept me now." I said simply."Well what if I accept you and end up not liking you?" Penn teased
The water droplets fell back into the water as I fully came to.What the hell was I doing in the creek? How was I controlling water? What in Veone's name was that horrid dream? Was I really in his head? Or was it just a nightmare?I waded through the water, making my way back on land. How the hell did I walk out here unnoticed? I had never sleep walked before. This was definitely not normal. When I was out of the water I used the wind to dry my nightgown and my feet before heading back to my castle. I thought about the dream the whole time.It was so vivid and realistic. I could actually taste the blood in my mouth and feel their organs in my clawed hands. The transformation was ab
"How do you know that?" Posy asked."Well…" I glanced at Oz."We can trust him." Zeke assured me. "I swear.""I think I've been tapping into Cedric's mind when I sleep. I saw the attack on the Hell Dwarves. It was like I was killing them too!""Why didn't you say anything before?" Posy demanded."I thought they were just dreams!" I exclaimed. "But I think we're psychically linked or something.""This is good right?" Oz asked. "That means we'll know the Aleni's movement and how close they are.""He's not wrong." Zeke pointed out. "This could be used to our advantage.""It'
"Who the fuck let you in here?" I demanded"I'm so sorry Empress." Shane bowed profusely. "He just burst through the doors. He's very strong!""You are fine Shane." I assured him. More than fine. Down right sexy. "You may leave us.""Now this is a nice kingdom!" Yavo grinned looking around. "I could get used to this."There were gasps all around as he sat on my throne."We're going to have a real beheading!" Posy whispered."Get out of that throne right now!" Zeke roared. I had never seen him so angry. I think his werewolf side was coming out. His eyes had that familiar glow.Yavo slowly got up. "Oh, shit. Is that your throne? My
"Empress, you seem sad." Hunter stated during training. "Are you okay?""Hunter...what would you do if you cared deeply for someone but everything in the world was telling you you're not allowed to? That you aren't meant to be, but you think you might be?""Well, I would keep trying. That's what I'm doing with you.""You care deeply for me?" I asked."Of course I do. You're my mate, Zelda. And sure you and the world are saying it's not true, but I know in my heart that it is. So I won't give up." He said simply."Huh. That's kind of romantic.""I thought so.""Another question. What if one p
My body felt a shock at once. Electricity flowed quickly and then expelled itself out of my body. Was I going to die again? I wondered as I fell to my knees. I breathed heavily as the last of the lightning left. I paused to make sure I wasn’t going to die again. “Zelda!” I looked up and saw Penn running over to me. “Penn!” He scooped me up in his arms and held me tightly. “I thought I lost you!” “How relieved were you?” I joked. He set me down and kissed me. “Very relieved. But now you’re back and I’m miserable again.” I kissed him again. “Are you lying to an Empress? That’s a crime.” “And what would be my punishment?” Penn smiled down at me. “You have to marry me…for real this time.” “You sure I can’t just take death?” I laughed as Zeke ran over to us and embraced me. “Tell me that’s the last time you almost die!” “No promises. I think it’s over now, though.” I smiled.&nb
Posy’s POV I hated her. Why did she do this? Why would she kill herself just to save the rest of us? Why wasn’t she selfish and logical? Why wouldn’t she just let us die for her with honor? Because Empress Zelda Xanatheal was a great leader. No one even cared about Cedric the moment Zelda hit the ground. The Aleni had been struck down and we had no one left to fight. We only wanted to see Zelda. I got to her first. I cried out upon feeling how limp she was in my arms. “Zelda?” I screamed. “Wake up Zelda, now!” She wouldn’t budge. The boys had transformed and put on their pants. Penn dropped to his knees. “Zelda?” He choked out. “Zelda, please wake up. I need you Zelda, please.” He was sobbing as he hugged her lifeless body. Hunter tried to comfort him, but he just pulled away and wailed. “I can’t live without her!” Penn cried out. “I can’t! How do we bring her back? Someone
I stepped towards Cedric in horror. “You killed your father?” I asked shakily. “We both know he deserved it.” “What are you doing here?” “Oh, was I not invited? I’m sorry, I figured maybe my invitation got lost in the crystal mirror.” He feigned innocence. “Cedric, why are you here?” I cried. “You look so pretty in your wedding dress…and I’d make the perfect groom. Everyone’s already here Zel, let’s just do it.” “No, no! We had a deal, Cedric, you swore. Don’t do this!” “Ah the deal…yeah I thought about that, constantly over the last month. I don’t like it. I didn’t go through all of that shit to end up without you. So…the deal is off.” Cedric was many things, but he wasn’t usually a liar. The only thing he had ever really lied to me about was killing Astris and it only took him a few moments to reveal that lie. He didn’t believe in lying, he thought it was a waste of time. He was fine with being rut
“Holy fuck!” I exclaimed. “You’re serious?!” “Very serious,” Penn said nervously digging into his pocket. He pulled out a stunning ring with a gorgeous blue gem on it. “Is that the -” “Gem of Xaxtar from Prince Mako, yeah. I know it was supposed to be a necklace, but I think it would look better on your finger. Posy helped me make it.” He smiled. “So? Can I be your Emperor for life?” “Yes! Of course! Absolutely!” I screamed. Penn got up and kissed me. I wrapped my arms around him tightly, absolutely elated. This was everything I ever wanted. I saved Uquix and I was going to marry the love of my life! He slipped the ring on my finger and I admired it. “It’s huge!” I exclaimed. “Isn’t it?” Posy asked. “I knew you’d love it!” “I can’t believe you didn’t tell me! I mean look at me I have soot all over my face and clothes!” I laughed. “You look beautiful,” Penn assured me before kissing me aga
The lava immediately stopped flowing as golden light shot out the Shadow Precipice. A stunning woman walked out of the light even though there was no ground to stand on. She was stunning! Her long golden hair flowed behind her as the gold light danced off of her dazzling brown skin. Her white eyes were terrifying and yet so warm. She stood between Cedric and I as though trying to decide who the winner was. She turned to Cedric and my heart dropped. I really had lost. But I gave my best effort and everything that I had. I did my best, even if it wasn’t good enough. “You gave a great effort,” She said to Cedric. Suddenly it was just the woman and me. Cedric had disappeared. “Empress Zelda…you are the winner of The Four Trials of the Forsaken Apex.” Wait, I recognized that voice. “Moxdea?” I asked. “Yes, Empress, it is I. In my true form. You have released me from my duty by completing t
We started climbing up the volcano slowly. We figured we should take it slow before things got out of control. The constant rumbling made me incredibly anxious. The volcano could erupt at any point. “Nervous?” Cedric questioned after a few moments of silence. “What makes you think that?” “You’re not usually quiet unless you feel unsure.” “Well...yes I am a little nervous but only because everything we’ve done these last few weeks has led up to this moment. Are you nervous?” I asked. “Yeah a little bit,” He admitted. “About what?” “Losing. Imagine I betrayed my kingdom and killed hundreds of creatures just to lose.” “Wow that would be really embarrassing for you,” I snorted. “Oh shut up.” “What else happened in your weird dream when we went in the quicksand?” I questioned. “It was so strange, but I was really happy. You were my wife. We wanted babies. I thought you we
Cedric was having a hard time leaving the Hartmeda Woodlands. He had been searching for something his whole life and he had found it and now he had to leave it again so soon. Hopefully he could come back and spend more time with Nova and really get to know her.“It was an honor and a privilege to meet you, Empress Zelda. Please come back any time and visit us.” Nova stated.“She will,” Cedric assured her. “She’ll be back as my wife. Who knows, maybe we’ll make a baby here.”“Everytime I stop being disgusted with you, you give me a reason to be again. Congratulations, it’s really a talent.” I declared.“You’re so in love with me,” He grinned.“Anyways, Nova, you are welcome to Gynem any time, really.” I hugged her.“I know my son is a nuisance sometimes, but I would love to have you as a daughter-in-law.&r
There were shouts of panic ringing in the air.As Penn and I were surrounded, I tried to see where the third dagger went. I quickly found out when Hunter started wailing. It was sticking out of his arm, so at least he wasn’t in immediate danger.“Save Zelda,” Penn said hoarsely. “Please, her not me.”“No save Penn first,” I breathed.“Zelda, you’re the priority!” Posy cried.“Royal Vizier Posy, as Empress of Gynem I order you to save Penn first!”Talking with a dagger in my stomach was not easy or pleasant, but I had to get my point across. Penn needed to come first.“What happened?” Zeke ran over to us. “Zelda, no!” He dropped on his knees next to me. “You’re going to be okay. Oh Veone, that’s a lot of blood!”“It’s okay, I’ll be fine.”I didn’t completel
I ran into Nerius’ big open wings. They enveloped me in a tight hug.“What are you doing here?” I asked.“Yurhy srei meings.”“Vacation huh? Are you sure you’re not here because you knew we’d be here?”He paused. “Nresh.”“Liar.” I shook my head.“What is he doing here?” Cedric questioned.“None of your business. Don’t be a jerk.” I stated.“Yeah, you wouldn’t want him to toss you again.” Penn snorted.“Shut it pretty boy!” Cedric stomped over to his mother.“Nerius, you remember Penn.” I smiled.“Shrup boit nurevsh marship?”“Nerius!”“What did he say?”“He asked me if you still cry after intercourse.” I chuckled.“Gue
