The sixth month of the year of the creator, 2,020.
(Two months before the blood moon)
Asghavia, Volcaris.Lolo Nerina's smirk grew as she sat in front of her dressing mirror while her maid brushed her pin-straight hair, dark as the eventide that flowed glossily to her waist and began styling it into a single, elegant braid.Centuries of planning and waiting were finally coming to an end. Today, she would be officially betrothed to the imperial prince and in the tenth month of the year, be formally engaged and married to him; able to live in the Unity Rock until the day of their wedding. It all lay on her shoulders now to bring the reign of the Estors to an end. From the day she was born, her dear father and mother saw great potential in her that they did not see in her elder brother, Orion. Her mastery of magic grew as she advanced in age, surpassing the understanding of her Nebulosi teachers to the point where she began to practice magic on her own. Neither her parents nor her brother possessed any magical ability. Her ability stemmed from her grandmother who was a powerful Nebulosi mage, but because it had skipped her parents and only sibling, Chief Topher, her father, had no other option than to ask the emperor to send Nebulosi teachers who were spell masters and advanced mages to train his daughter and because of the relationship between the two kingdoms, the emperor had no choice but to agree. She was also trained rigorously in archery, swordsmanship, horseback riding, and politics but much attention was given to her magic. Her magic was unlike any other that the Nebulosi spell masters had ever encountered. Oftentimes, she did not require the use of spells to channel and bring her power forth. In her spare time, she practiced malignant forms of sorcery that sometimes left her teetering on the brink of madness. At sixteen, her father began preparing her to finish what his ancestors could not do. To take back the kingdoms and rule the entire continent. The plan of action was both simple and highly complicated."You look stunning, my Lolo," her maid, Delia praised as she added a gold head ornament to Nerina's hair as the finishing touch."I know," Nerina responded proudly as she gazed at herself in the mirror. Possessing a rare siren-like beauty that most women did not have, with thick, dark eyebrows that resembled a raptor in flight and full, inviting lips that had been painted a cherry red, she was arguably one of the most gorgeous noble women in all the five kingdoms.Delia smiled subtly and retreated to the wardrobe to fetch Nerina's outfit for the banquet happening in the Unity Rock that night. After helping Nerina into a pristine scarlet dress with full sleeves, cut in a V that exposed her cleavage, made her pale skin stand out, and was cinched at the waist by a diamond chain. The ends of the long dress pooled around her legs like she was standing in a pool of blood. Delia placed a pure gold necklace with a pendant bearing a golden eagle which was the crest of her tribe, around her graceful neck.Nerina's intense icy blue eyes focused on Delia through the mirror. "Have you gotten the information I need as I instructed?"Delia swallowed in fear. She had been hoping that Nerina had forgotten all about it, but she had been foolish to think like that. Nerina never forgot anything. Ever. She searched her mind for a suitable lie but she knew that would be an unwise decision because Nerina could smell a lie before it could even be uttered."I-I…" she stuttered, at a loss for words to explain herself.Nerina stood from the padded leather stool and turned with a heart-aching grace to face Delia, causing her to take a step back, terrified of the flaming anger in the Lolo's blue eyes.Nerina reached forward and grabbed Delia's chin with her long fingers, angling the shorter girl's face to meet her piercing gaze."You…what?" A flash of anger crossed her face but was quickly replaced by a calm, controlled smile.Delia fell to her knees, gripping the hem of Nerina's dress. "Forgive me, my Lolo!" she pleaded, tears streaming down her round cheeks. "I forgot about it, but I swear, once we return to the winter isles, I will set about getting the information to you. I swear on the creator!" she begged, not wanting to face the wrath of Nerina."Get up," Nerina commanded, her voice sharp, and Delia quickly obeyed, though not daring to meet Nerina's eyes. She knew Delia was lying to her face but she decided to play along and see just how long her maid could lie to her."I have trusted you with this because I shared my teenage years with you, but the next time you conveniently forget about this, I will not hesitate to sever your head from your body. "Ensure you carry out my instructions the second we reach Sejukgheim. Do you understand?" Nerina snarled like a wildcat, her voice low and dangerous."Yes, my Lolo," Delia whispered, her body shaking like a leaf on a stormy night."Get out of my sight, and tell my father that I wish to see him immediately," she ordered, turning away as she dismissed Delia.Delia promptly exited the chambers that had been assigned to the Lolo by the head servant of the Unity Rock. She knew of the Lolo's plot but wanted no part in it. She had already gotten the information that the Lolo required but could not bring herself to inform her about it.Despite being a citizen of Sejukgheim, a personal servant and confidante of Lolo Nerina, she was fiercely loyal to the imperial prince after he had put himself in danger to save her life when she was still a child with his vast knowledge of magic and spells. However, there was no way she could inform him of the plots against him, his tribe and the continent, without Nerina finding out.All she could do was to withhold the information from Nerina as long as she could until she was able to figure out a way to either somehow thwart the schemes of Nerina or inform the prince of which both options would result in losing her head, a head that she desperately wanted to keep connected to her neck and the rest of her body."Nerina, you are the embodiment of perfection," Chief Topher, a tall said in admiration as he took in the willowy form of his daughter."Thank you, Father, for that astute observation," Nerina replied, a smug smile dancing on her lips."As gracious as ever, my dear." Chief Topher said sarcastically as he sat on a chair and observed the luxurious chambers he had made sure his daughter was given. "I trust the accommodations are to your liking?""It will suffice," Nerina said, fiddling with the huge, silver ring gracing her long ring finger."Father, we have come a very long way to get to this point and now, it is finally happening, but there is one thing that bothers me," she said, her brows furrowing in thought."What might that be?" Topher asked, tilting his head to the side.Arched brows furrowed, she began to pace back and forth in deep thought. "I have been thinking, Father, what if the imperial prince refuses to be wed to me? Would we have to switch to our second plan or what?" Chief Topher smiled confidently. "You need not worry about such a trivial thing, my dear. The prince would not go against his father, not after what happened when he tried such a foolish thing before. We need not bother ourselves with our second plan as long as you play your part seamlessly."Her father's assurance calmed Nerina's racing thoughts and slowed them to a stop. "I shall play my role exactly as we have planned, Father. Soon, we will take back what was rightfully ours." They shared a malicious grin...Lolo Nerina raised her eyes, fixing her stare at the man she was supposed to marry, who sat peering at her with narrowed eyes.Wondering if he had already begun to suspect her, she cleverly schooled her expression into one of obeisance, affection, and humility, as she had practiced many times over the years. The prince noticed the almost imperceptible change in Nerina's countenance but it was so quick that he thought he must have imagined it."The festivities will now begin in the great hall!" The royal herald announced as guards on both the upper and lower levels led the crowd out the main doors and to the great hall for the proper celebrations, with the emperor, Daegal, Nerina, and Chief Topher leaving last surrounded by the emperor's personal guards.Nerina hooked her arm around Daegal's, who stiffened at her touch but made no move to detach his arm from her grasp. It was his duty to be kind and receptive to the woman he was supposed to marry. She felt his arm become rigid immediately she held onto him, but as he made no move to free himself, she smiled slyly and exchanged a knowing look with her father who nodded discreetly. It was all going according to plan...................
"Tell me," Nerina commanded.
She had called Delia, her maid, into her chambers a month and five days after attending the betrothal banquet at Asghavia. They had returned to Sejukgheim two days after the banquet but she decided to give Delia time to come to her on her own after completing her assignment, without needing to be summoned. However, she quickly grew fed up with Delia's blatant dodgy attitude."My Lolo, I-""I truly hope that you do not plan on telling me another lie, Delia." Nerina cut her off in a sing-song voice as she reclined further into her high-backed chair carved out of the finest timber from the forests surrounding Drakova, the capital city of Sejukgheim.Delia's skinny shoulders dropped. She knew that Nerina wasn't a person that was easily deceived but she had to try until she came up with a plan. Which she successfully did."No, my Lolo. I have found what you needed." Nerina's eyebrows shot up in attention as she sat up straight."Good. Tell me everything and do not leave anything out."Delia took in a deep breath and did her best to sound convincing and not let her face betray any of her emotions."What you seek is in the kingdom of Aesos," Delia informed."Aesos?" Nerina mused. "Which of the cities? Khieva or?" she asked."No, not Khieva, but Vishwum. There is a remote but thick forest there and what you are looking for is there in the hut of the local priestess. "Her hut is located in the heart of the forest. You will know you are there once you see the huge mahogany tree. You just need to travel north-east when you are in the forest," Delia said. This was the first time she had looked Nerina in the eye and lied brazenly. Though it was not a lie but a half-truth.She had boarded a ship to Aesos immediately after returning from the banquet at Asghavia but instead of doing exactly what Nerina had told her to, she told the local priestess who was loyal to the Estor tribe, about what Nerina was planning. The old priestess who was also a powerful sorceress was enraged at the schemes of Nerina and her father, and swore to make sure that their efforts came to naught."And she has exactly what I need? Did you confirm that?" Nerina asked, eyeing Delia suspiciously.Delia forced herself not to squirm or be scared of Nerina's questioning gaze. "I confirmed it, Lolo. It is in her possession.""Good, you may go now," Nerina waved her hand in dismissal. As Delia closed the double doors behind her, she leaned back on them and released a long sigh of relief. "Dear Creator, please help me. May Lolo Nerina be convinced that I speak the truth," She prayed under her breath and left to attend to other duties.Meanwhile, Nerina grinned victoriously inside her chambers as she brought a goblet of wine to her lips and took a long sip. Her plan was being set in motion and all the pieces were falling in place just as she had imagined all these years. After draining the goblet, she fetched her thick fur coat which was spread neatly atop her feather bed, and draped it around her shoulders. With long strides, she headed to her father's chambers on the other side of their ancestral palace. The weather was frosty and the wind was like a rain of arrows slashing her cheeks and ears. Had she not been used to the cold of the Winter Isles; she would have frozen right there on the spot even with the heavy coat around her.The climate in the winter isles was either warm or extremely cold. There were no in-betweens. During the warm weather which lasted for six months every year, the common people would plant cash crops and food crops which would be ready for harvesting before the cold winters rolled in.Winter brought the season of mining. Drakova, the capital city of Sejukgheim and seat of the great tribe of Drako had the largest mines in all of Sejukgheim and the entire continent, which made the Drakos the wealthiest tribe that ever was and ever would be.This was the reason why Chief Kalix was extremely infuriated when Emperor Iqbar transferred rule to Nebulos even when he had reluctantly resigned himself to serving the continent and in turn serving Volcaris after Sejukgheim was almost irreparably damaged in the great war between the two kingdoms during Emperor Babr's conquest of the continent. They were wealthier and had an even larger army than Nebulos but they lacked one thing that kept the Nebulosi at a greater advantage. Formidable magic."I want to see my father. Tell him that I would be waiting for him on the balcony which overlooks the snow mountains," She instructed the home guards who stood outside her father's quarters."Yes, Lolo." They bowed before her as she turned and left.A while later, her father joined her on the balcony, their cloaks billowing in the strong wind."Nerina, you are aware that I am to leave for Asghavia before nightfall, so why have you requested to see me?" Chief Topher asked."I have found what we need to take back what is ours," She said curtly, diving straight to the point. She had no time to waste.Chief Topher beamed. Finally, everything was coming together splendidly."Good, you have made your father proud. Where did you find it?" He asked."It's in Aesos.""Aesos? No, that's too far away. You might not make it in time for the engagement and—"Chief Topher paused as a disturbing thought crossed his mind."How did you come to find out?" He asked, taking a step closer to Nerina."I sent Delia to find out, and she did," Nerina shrugged, wondering why her father looked so troubled. At her nonchalant response, Chief Topher became incensed. "How could she not understand the gravity of the situation?" He said to himself, his temper blooming. In a blaze of anger, he slapped Nerina across her cheek. The force of the slap pushed her back a step. She held her reddened cheek as tears stung her eyes and blurred her vision. Her father, still annoyed, grabbed her arm roughly. "I did not raise you to make stupid decisions, Nerina!" He bellowed, with spittle flying out of his mouth and landing on her face."W-what have I done, Father?" she asked shakily as she brought her hand down from her cheek and made a fist. She hated when her father made her feel small, insignificant, and dumb. For years, she had worked tirelessly to fulfill her father's ambitions which in turn, became hers. However, on occasions like this, he never seemed to be satisfied with her efforts."Do you truly not know what you have done? How could you act thoughtlessly? Sending your maid? A maid! You didn't even send one of the many spies at our disposal to do the work for you, instead, you sent your maid! Did you tell her our agenda?" he fumed. She kept her head down and avoided her father's flaming blue eyes. Eyes that were more insidious than hers could ever be."I-I did. But I made sure that she wouldn't say anything. She can't do anything! I even threatened—" Before she could finish trying to defend her actions, another slap landed across her cheek."Do you have any idea how deceitful and cunning people like Delia can be? You might be successful in keeping them on a tight leash and making them do your bidding, but you cannot fully control them."With a hand on her chin, he raised her face, forcing her to look into his eyes as he continued."There are many kinds of people you need to fear and tread lightly with and the most dangerous of them all are the ones who have nothing to lose, Nerina. "That is where your maid falls in. She has no family, no husband, and no children. Do you think she would think twice about betraying you? Do you think she is afraid of losing anything?" He seethed.Nerina squared her jaw stubbornly. She knew what she was doing and was not going to let her father make her feel stupid anymore."Let go of me, Father. You will treat me with respect. I am going to be the future empress of this continent. You will not hurt me like this again!" she asserted through clenched teeth.Chief Topher was taken aback. Nerina had never for once talked back at him before. "Could I have made a mistake in giving her so much power?" he wondered. He let go of her arm. "My apologies," he said, though he wasn't remorseful. "When do you leave for Aesos?""Tonight. I shall get on the last ship in a disguise, to avoid being detected.""And you are sure that you can trust the words of Delia?" Chief Topher raised an eyebrow."Delia knows that if she betrays me or leads me on a wild goose chase, then I would have her head. It just so happens that she values her life. That is what she has to lose, Father. I know her very well," she said firmly."For both our sakes, I hope you are right. Make sure you avoid recognition," Topher warned."I will."Chief Topher turned and exited the balcony leaving Nerina staring at his retreating form as she chanted a spell. Her fingers emitted weak, blue tendrils of energy as her ice blue eyes began to glow a bright violet and slowly, her appearance and clothing transformed to that of a common, unremarkable servant. And here is the beautiful Lolo Nerina! Fear not, the main storyline will resume soon!
On the 21st day of the eighth month of the year of the creator, 2,020.(Present day)Vishwum, Aesos."You have come a long way, Child."A white-haired old woman draped in simple white robes made of cotton sat on a low stool, counting the brown, glass beads on a necklace with fingers that were weathered and crooked, and had seen better days. However, the aura of power that exuded from her in waves convinced Nerina that she was no ordinary old lady."And yet, Indah is afraid you have journeyed all this way for nothing," She continued, shaking her head as her attention was focused on the necklace in her palm.Nerina hoped that she had suddenly developed a hearing impairment and perhaps had misunderstood what the old woman had said.Plastering a fake smile on her face, she asked. "W-what do you mean by that? How could I have come all this way for nothing?" The journey by sea had taken more than a fortnight and had been extremely tiring. There was no way she could have come all this way f
With a sharp intake of breath, Naomi's eyes snapped open. The dusky forest around her would have been swallowed in darkness had it not been for the burning torches and the light from the bleeding moon above. That was right. There was currently a lunar eclipse happening and she could vaguely remember stopping at the gas station to admire it with Victoria, but as she searched her environs, she noticed that her car and the gas station were nowhere to be seen. There were only trees and more trees as far as her eyes could see. She seemed to be in a forest or jungle of the sort. She was supposed to be en route to Silicon Valley. However, she could not remember the road to the valley being surrounded by towering canopies of trees of unfamiliar species. As she slowly began to get her bearings in order, she tried taking a step forward but quickly came to the harsh realization that something was terribly wrong. She could not move. Discordant notes screamed like alarm bells in her head, warning h
San Francisco, California. "You still do not know how to get back to our world, do you? It's been one hundred and fifty years since we were cast down to this forsaken realm and you still have not given a single thought to how we can return to our world?! I am sick, frustrated, and tired of waiting! "You assured me that when we kill the girl and her parents, we would be able to return, and I did it. I did everything you asked of me to the letter and still, I find myself stuck here and there is nothing you are doing about it! Why are you so quiet, Master Faizar? Speak!" A man dressed in a spotless dark-blue suit yelled. He took an agitated puff of the Cao Gold cigar in his hand and exhaled it out slowly as he ran his fingers through his glossy honey-blond tresses. The person he was speaking to rolled his eyes in irritation. He hated being pressured into doing things. He preferred doing things at his own pace and in his own time. "Why wouldn't I be quiet when you have been complainin
It seemed to be a pleasant enough afternoon for the citizens of Asghavia but for Prince Daegal, it was anything but. He had risen that morning with the same disturbing thoughts that had been on his mind ever since his father, the emperor Vulcan arranged his marriage to Lolo Nerina of Sejukgheim. He could not shake off the feeling that something was very wrong with her. Every night since the betrothal banquet, her intense blue eyes tormented his dreams. She looked innocent enough that evening but in her eyes was something sinister that he couldn't comprehend. Initially, he believed that the uneasiness he felt when he looked into her eyes was just him looking for an excuse not to get married to her. However, after he kept having those dreams ceaselessly, he realized that there was more to her than meets the eyes. He could not let himself be trapped in a marriage with her, a person he could not trust; a person whose true intentions he could not fathom. "This marriage cannot hold," He
Naomi had been walking endlessly through the vast forest without coming across a single soul. She was exhausted; her legs felt like lead and her arms weighed her down. She did not know how much longer she could go on. "Is there no end to this godforsaken place?" She groaned in frustration. She was thirsty again as the water she had drunk back at the pond had evaporated from her body due to the intense heat. She could feel her skin reddening furiously from the harshness of the sun. However, just as she was about to give up all hope and resign herself to the hands of fate, she sighted smoke in the distance. From her knowledge of books, movies, and series, smoke usually meant that there was life around. Effectively energized, she pushed her new body once more. A long and winding jog later, she arrived at the source of the smoke. The place was the answer to all of her prayers. It was a small cottage, very ordinary-looking but it had what she needed urgently; an already saddled horse wi
Lying was a skill that came easily to Naomi. Inherently, she was not a pathological liar—she spoke truthfully most times but there were situations; situations such as this that required her to lie through her teeth. In her line of work, she often had to deceive and manipulate people into revealing information that they would never disclose under any circumstances. She did not want to hoodwink the nice shopkeeper but she was in a position where any wrong move could turn out to be detrimental. From her reading of the Heart of the continent, she knew that the citizens of the continent could never be completely trusted; especially the common folk. Anybody from the Great Houses could be the most powerful emperor or Chief but once the common people turn against their reign, that rule becomes considerably threatened. That was one of the major turning points in the novel in which the reigning emperor of the continent, Ishaq was forcefully dethroned. Clearing her throat, she put on her mos
"I do not know what you are talking about. I am no thief!" Naomi retorted defensively, putting on an astonished and offended look. The four men burst into laughter in perfect unison, their voices a deep rumble. Then, they began to speak in a language that was alien to Naomi's ears.Perhaps it was their native tongue. In the heart of the continent, every kingdom had languages that were peculiar to them but they all spoke a common tongue when inter-communicating with one another. She stared at them confused as they continued discussing in their native tongue. She wondered why she had to get into trouble just when she was about to get answers to why she had migrated here. If Nerina was getting married to the prince of the continent, then she needed to get to Nebulos as soon as possible and find out more about Nerina and how she was connected to her. As if that wasn't a daunting task on its own, she would also have to accomplish her aim before she would be made to marry some fictional
"Pastries?" The woman chuckled, mirth bubbling within in. Upon first glance at the tall, pale-skinned maiden in front of her, she would never have suspected her of any crime which was why she had stepped up immediately on seeing those brutes trying to sever her hands. "It was not the best thing to do, I admit but I was in a precarious situation! I did not want to steal at all but I had no other option. I guess I should return them…" Naomi sighed heavily, her stomach grumbling furiously. The apple and dried meat she had eaten back in the forest had all but disappeared from her stomach. "There would be no need for that. Come with me." She gave Naomi a small smile as she turned and began heading in the direction of the main harbor and the shops. Not of her own volition, Naomi followed her. The woman was nothing to her but a stranger; she could not understand why she felt such an indescribable pull toward her. She had no reason to trust the woman asides from the fact that she had saved
Naomi smiled sheepishly when Daegal praised her and laid her head against his shoulder. Suddenly, a chief threw a question at Daegal. "What happened to Empress Nerina? Where is she?" Everyone else in attendance nodded in agreement and began to murmur the question too. Naomi's eyes monitored everyone and made her observations about them. When they quieted down, Daegal took his time to explain every single event from the beginning till date with Naomi occasionally chipping in. And when he was done, the entire hall bowed down to Naomi and called her their empress. Naomi wiped the tears that formed under her eye. She didn't think she would garner such a support system from people who did not know her well enough but after Daegal's information, they looked at her and saw her. Her true self. A few days before, Naomi had Delia released from the dungeons and she was also very surprised to see the transformation but also knew that something was fish ever since Nerina started to be very ni
"Are you just going to stand there gawking?" Naomi asked, her voice hoarse. Daegal was immediately by her side with water. After she took a few sips, she sighed and with Daegal's help, sat up against some pillows. "What? Why are you both staring at me like that?"Daegal only smiled at her in response. Love and adoration shone in his eyes in such a way that made Naomi's heart melt from the display. As he brushed her hair back, Naomi reached up to tuck a strand behind her ear but midway into the motion, she caught the color of her hand.Naomi blinked once. Then blinked again. She shook her head from side to side and looked at her hand again."Daegal? Azriel? Am I dreaming?"Azriel laughed and pinched her calf. Naomi let out a small yelp and glared at him."No, you are not dreaming."Naomi returned her gaze to her hand and then lifted her other hand too. Tears of joy streamed down her face as she took in the rich, cocoa color."Can you get me a mirror, please?" she said to Daegal and pro
Master Faizar's brow furrowed in confusion when he saw the grin on Naomi's face that made her look maniacal and downright terrifying.Naomi didn't know where strength came from or even understand what she was about to do but she just knew it was what she was destined to do.She slowly rose to her feet with her hands clamped over Faizar's. She stared deep into his hazel eyes and uttered the words that struck fear into his heart for the first time in his life."This is your end and my beginning, Faizar."She threw his hands down and then pressed her fingers against his forehead. Her eyes shone a bright white light as she threw her head back and opened the part of her mind where she had locked her dream-walking magic in.Fueled by hate, revenge, and anger, Naomi threw herself into his dark, twisted mind. She didn't pay attention to his screams of anguish but only focused on what she realized she had to do.Her magic rippled across the clearing and beyond but the airtight shield around th
Naomi could smell the saltiness of the sea way before she even sighted the battleground. A wide, grassy plain extended toward the shore of the sea, and about a mile inland, Babatunde's army awaited. Rocky hills that seemed very familiar to Naomi arose at their back with some of their soldiers standing atop it. Naomi and Daegal stood on top of a wide hill overlooking the plain ahead. Thalia and Azriel were close behind while Kabeer and Ser Tare, clothed in their dark armor, gave the order for their armies to halt below. They obeyed them and arranged themselves into predetermined positions. The threat they faced though... Naomi didn't even need to count before she knew how outnumbered they were. "They took every inch of high ground they could find. We have to stick to the lower levels instead," Azriel hissed. "At least we have air power. That will be our high ground," Naomi said. "Precisely," Daegal agreed. "I think I can fight on horseback, Daegal," Azriel said but Daegal shot h
After Naomi's rescue from Master Faizar's clutches, Daegal didn't let her out of his sight for a single moment. He always made sure she was within sight and hearing distance and would even enter a panic when she wasn't near.An evening later, while alone in her tent, Naomi had earlier sent for Thalia and she entered when Naomi was poring over a tome. "How is Azriel?" she asked upon noticing Thalia's entrance. "Better now, Empress. He bled quite a lot since the arrow went clean through his shoulder but I and the other healers managed to help.""Will he be able to fight?" Thalia bent her head for a moment then looked up. "Azriel is strong but he will need time to heal."Naomi cocked an eyebrow. "Time to heal? Why have you not used magic to speed it up?" "We tried but something is wrong. The process is painstakingly slow so we have to rely on nature this time."Naomi bit her lip and set aside the book that was on her lap. "Please take care of him. I will come to see him later.""Of c
Nightfall came swiftly. Azriel and Thalia were prepared as they had gone over their plan with Daegal almost a thousand times. They were to sneak through the enemy's camp without drawing attention. Since some might know Azriel, he would stick to the shadows and also wear the helmet and armor that their blacksmiths had created which resembled that of Babatunde's soldiers."Ready, Thalia?" Azriel asked and Thalia nodded in the affirmative. They bid Daegal goodbye and mounted their horses. The ride was silent as they were too focused on their mission to joke or say anything to each other. After thirty to forty minutes of hard riding, they arrived in a thick forest, stopping on a hilltop that overlooked the outskirts of the formidable enemy camp.Master Faizar and Nezetta had used the same kind of spells that Daegal put around their camp to shield it from wandering eyes but thanks to the information that Naomi previously collected from those captured and now dead soldiers, Thalia and Azrie
"A dream walker?" Naomi echoed as Master Faizar placed the torch in his hand into a bracket. He circled her slowly like she was the prey and he, the predator. He stopped in front of her and ran a hand down her cheek. "Have you never felt the power of going into a person's mind and seeing all their deepest thoughts? Their fears, joys, and sorrows?" Naomi swallowed, her throat stinging from the dryness as she remembered penetrating Azriel and Meriana's minds. Amani's too. "Your eyes give you away, Naomi. So expressive. The magic that you hold is rare, ancient, and terrific. It lies deep within your soul," he said. Naomi scowled. "I don't find anything terrific about it. Sometimes I end up hurting people and other times, no one gets hurt. I don't understand it and I'm not sure I even want to."Master Faizar smiled softly but it did nothing to ease Naomi's worries. She continuously kept trying to access any part of her magic but she couldn't reach it. All she could hope was for Daegal
"Nngh," Naomi groaned as she slowly came to. The last thing she remembered was hugging her parents and...When she fully opened her eyes, there was darkness all around her. She couldn't even see two feet in front of her."Fuck," she swore as she realized that her hands and feet were tied to a pole and as much as she tried to get free by using her magic, it was as if an oily sheen dampened it.'Where am I? Where am I?' Naomi thought to herself as she continued struggling against her binds.Suddenly, a gust of wind blew across her face as something ruffled. A bright light illuminated the space around her as someone stepped through the flaps of the tent.Naomi remained quiet, choosing not to speak but to gauge instead. Her eyes narrowed suspiciously as the figure stalked ever closer to her. Though her heart pounded in her chest, she kept a straight face to hide her terror. Finally, the person shifted the burning torch from his face and his features came into view. He vaguely looked like
Azriel spoke up. "This is them showing their appreciation and undying loyalty to you. Daegal opened their eyes and cleared their doubts."Naomi nodded slowly. "Okay..." Then to those kneeling, she said in a raised voice: "Rise."In seconds, they obeyed her command. Ser Tare gave her a short bow and a heartfelt smile before he returned to his legion. Then she climbed up the podium and whispered some things to Daegal. After a moment, he nodded once. "It is now time for these traitors to face the emperor's justice. Chief Azriel, bring them to me."Six of them were brought up to the platform, still chained. They each had identical haunted looks in their eyes. Naomi cleared her throat before raising her voice. "In light of ours and the creator's mercy, we will give each of you a chance to renounce your allegiance to Chief Topher and Babatunde Alen. Refusal to do so means you acquiesce to your execution."Some of the captured soldiers began to ask for mercy. However, Naomi cast them all
