Chapter 170 - Wonderful Words

"We must leave as soon as we can, your Majesty," Kestra said, moving away from the Bride who was still laying weakly in the bed.

Kestra was curious as to what had happened in that den. The girl didn't seem to have any major injury, she had checked her body for any foreign presence too but there was nothing. So why was this weak? Or could it be that she was just suffering from mental stress or some sort of trauma from being in contact with the dragon?

If it was something physical, the Physician would have found out.

Kestra could remember how he was sweating profusely to say the news. When he had been told to leave, he had scrambled out, saying the Bride was a strange being. He had been lucky Eli was much too concerned with other things than to confront him on what he had said.

It was a good thing that the Bride was bedridden, Eli was talking to her more, seeking her opinion more and it would have been great if he wasn't doing all this by her bedside, but somewhere else.

Going around on a horse wasn't Eli's thing. This beast didn't feel large enough to be ridden but he had no choice. This place seemed very familiar but that was all to it. He wasn't sure if it was his weakness or if there was anything else for him to blame this upon. The forest was quiet and the fact that the villagers didn't visit this place in fear of the rumour of it being cursed, was a good thing. They haven't ran into anyone since they made it into the forest.Truly, the Nuktar forest had some magical abilities, it wasn't as horrific as the villagers described. It only shifted little things from one place to another and for the mind of humans, that could be very confusing. Most of them might get lost and find it difficult to get out of the forest, but they always do and when they do, they run out, terming it cursed.Eli considered it playful. Kestra hated it. She said it made fetching whatever she needed difficult. They were pretty used to the forest by now though, it wasn't

"It is beautiful, isn't it?" Kestra asked, looking at the lake of glittering blue water and the clear pebbles that circled the small lake. They seemed to reflect the color of the body of water they decorated.Eli shrugged, finding a suitable rock to sit upon, as he reached for his mask and pulled it off. His facial muscles twitched and he bit back a groan. His dragon had given him a beating, he could still feel the sharp long claws of the beast like they were still there, dug beneath his flesh, as it swiped out the scales of painful remembrance. The beast had mocked him. Despite the memories that flashed through his mind, he just really wanted this to be over and done with already, so that they could continue the search for the cave. He didn't have all day. Soon enough, they would need to rest too, he would like for that to happen after they had found the cave. In fact, he would like to rest only when he had restored everything to normalcy and he was in his Donna's arms again. T

Light laughter slipped through a small gap between her slightly parted red lips, her fingers delicate as she moved them expertly on his face, in her treatment administration. This wasn't the first time she would be dressing Eli's wound, she couldn't even count how many of his injuries she had dressed and once upon a time, she was the only one that could treat his face if there was ever a need for that. She wondered if she was still the only one. She didn't have to think too long though. She knew she wasn't. Someone else had taken her place but not for long. "Thank you for saving my life." His voice had a rough edge to it, along with the appreciation she had been dying to hear. "I should have thanked you long before now."He clearly remembered being defeated by the dragon and how he had tossed his mask out at the last minute, blaming himself for not having done that way earlier, wondering if he had tossed it far away enough for them to even see it.He remembered how his blood had tri

His reply wasn't what she had expected. "I'm not going to betray her."Her heart felt like it had been sank in a bucket of cold water."I'm sure she will understand, if you tell her, your Majesty." She said quietly. "Besides, this is necessary." He threw her a look that she couldn't interpret but it was nothing pleasant, nothing like the way she wanted him to be looking at her. "Understand what?"She took a slow step back, her bare feet rubbing against the small smooth rocks beneath them, the silent sound blending with the sound of her breathing, as his frame slowly towered over her like an uprising shadow backing the moon.He was standing up.Why was he standing up?!"Tell me. Understand what? Understand that I have to lay with my Right hand woman consistently because I survived on being intimate with her. Isn't it enough that I am cursed?""This is also one of your curses, Eli." She responded, her voice low, a frown etching into her face. He blinked, the words although soft spok

He continued, watching the tears roll down her cheeks with an unshakeable glare."I'm sorry! I'm sorry."The minute he retracted his claws and she sensed her freedom, Kestra scrambled away from him, falling to the ground, her blood staining the beautiful stones before she stood up almost immediately, making all attempts to move away from him as quickly as possible. He stood up too, but he didn't go after her. Instead, he shook his head, the weakness finding its way back into his veins, the pain leaving him temporarily as he settled back into logical himself.Anger no longer swindling in him, his emotions no longer slamming into one another uncontrollably, he was more in control of himself now. The shift was obvious. The glare wiped away from his face and a sorry look took its place. "Kestra."She looked up at him and shook her head. "I'm fine.""I am so sorry. I apologize, I---" he walked closer to her and she moved away, pulling one part of her slit over her cut, when she sensed h

"Now how stupid is that?" Big Cook said and a peal of laughter filled the kitchen."Stupid?" Belladonna asked, looking away from the man who didn't seem ready to offer any explanation, to the direction she had heard the voice that promised a story."It is a name from a child's story.""Fae tale." Another provided. "Fairytale, you mean.""It's stupid ya think." Big Cook added. "What is the fairytale about?" Belladonna asked. For some reason her heart kept pounding, the sound of it overwhelming her mind. "Silly kids ya claim to see what ain't there. Idiots. Don't worry none about it, Milady. It's all bullocks!"They burst into laughter again, like this was the most ridiculous thing they would ever hear. Belladonna craned her neck a little to search for the man that had started speaking about "The Eye" in the first place, eeriness she had sensed from him earlier, was now gone because of the large grin on his face that showed his perfect set of pearly white teeth. His loose-fitted dul

Those four words had flowed to her ears without their meaning at first, and she nodded casually till her head paused mid-nod and she looked right back at him, feeling herself weaken at the impact of the news. "That is--- when?"He shrugged. "Yesterday.""Was it---" she could feel the tears well up in her eyes. For some reasons, she was blaming herself."It wasn't the dragon. It was a peaceful sleep.""H---how?" She shook her head. "No, I don't think that is true. We all thought the King was dead before and---" she gulped, feeling a knot in her throat. "Where is she?""Cremated." "What?!" She half-yelled, half-whispered, shocked. "She is my wife. I did what was necessary."Belladonna gulped, looking around her yet not really seeing anything, she could feel the hurt in her heart though, how heavy and painful it was. "It was all my fault." His voice sounded defeated, like the voice of a man that was grieving. "Everything that happened to my Raquel. You know, My Lady, that she suffere

"How are you supposed to know that?""I know a thing or two about these things, My Lady. I have been Lady Kestra's help for a while." He paused, risking to look intently at her. "Did the king not tell you?""No. It wasn't in his letter.""It must have slipped his Majesty's mind in all the chaos. I presume, it is a really good thing that Lady Kestra asked me to inform you then. It is your right to know what is going on, My Lady." His hand held the doorknob of his room and he pushed it open, but she was shaken by what she had just realized to go into the room. Her mind was somewhere else. Somewhere far away. So far away. Eli, losing his memory?Belladonna had been told that he had gone into the forest to get something to tame the dragon permanently, so that something like this would not happen again, but the likely sacrifice of him forgetting her was something that had never crossed her mind.Did he know this?Even if he did, which she hoped that he did, it was the memory of her weigh

“What is this?” Ny'ka asked, racing up to her feet.“The Stones of Prophecy. I already told you,” Ka'el replied, rising to his feet too. He groaned a little, his ribs hurting from the force that had tossed him aside. The stones had suddenly fallen to the ground, scattered; they were still glowing though. “I mean, what do they do?“I don't know!” There was a bit of panic in his voice, then he started to mumble to himself as he fell on his knees and started trying to collect the stones. “The King believes his daughter is in the Rebellion, and there are rumors of the Heir; he thinks they are working together.” He stopped and stared up at Ny'ka who watched him with a frown on her face. “That is why the Moon and the Sun came up in the sky because she is really here? But you said it didn't happen here, that it was from another Realm. It is from another realm, right? It isn’t true, Is it?”Ny'ka tried to grab one of the stones from Ka'el but it held it away from her. “Is his daughter truly

Then she felt like she was drowning and her words vanished from her lips. It felt like she was right in the lake and above it at the same time, hovering over the water and looking at the drowning child, while the drowning child looked back at her, struggling. Then she was finally in the baby and she could see Xinora floating over her as she felt herself dying in the baby — felt the baby dying. She saw Xinora stare right at her mother, who froze immediately like she had seen a ghost - it was what she looked like anyway, what she seemed to be. Then Belladonna felt the presence slam right into her immediately. Xinora had vanished and was now inside her as one being, the moment of her almost death creating the perfect space for Xinora to fit in. But just as Xinora had merged into her, she dissolved into the back of her mind like a mere pest fighting against a strong host. Her mother pulled her out of the water, her gaze blank and cold. Without a word, she wrapped her in a piece of clo

Trigger warning: Dealing with rape aftermath (from victim’s perspective) on page, and baby drowning on page. _________Belladonna paced the room. Two nights have passed since Alaris and her had discussed about Xinora. The Rebellion was healing, and she had sought out Ny'ka to help her with creating portals; although she knew that it might not work, just as it hadn't been working, but that was just how unpromising Channeling had been, and it had worked eventually. That wasn't the problem though. The thing was that Ny'ka was nowhere to be found. It didn't take long for her to figure out where she was.She was with Ka'el, most likely inquiring about their recent failure.Alaris had confirmed her suspicion, and here she was, in the room, trying not to drive herself mad with every single possibility that was crossing her mind. The Priest had drawn a tattoo on the top part of her chest, a little distance from her neck. He had smeared it with the blood of an animal, chanted some things th

Ny'ka went to Ka'el that night as the Heir had ordered, only to find out that he was with someone. Tsiri? What? What was she doing here? Why was she here? How long has she known about Ka'el? How did she get here? Why was she here?By Ina, what had she told him?!The White glow of the crescent moon above glimmered down on them through the shadows of the scanty leaves of the tall trees around them. The smile on Tsiri’s face was plain for Ny'ka to see, just as obvious as the doubt that dotted Ka’el’s eyes. What had she told him?!“Is it true?” Ka'el asked, his fist tightening around the small bag he had in his hand. She wondered what was in that bag but his next words made her aware of the greater problem she had before her. “Are you just fooling me?” He asked as his free hand anchored around Tsiri’s waist, making her smile widen. Disappointment flashed in Ny'ka's eyes and she frowned, blatantly ignoring Tsiri. “Fooling you? What nonsense are you talking about? And why are you with o

“Nightshade, do you have any memories of Jyris?”He was crouching in front of her. This room suddenly felt too small. Where was the air of ease?“No, except that he healed my ankle, gave me that gold ring that you tossed away and he was at the table with the King. Nothing else. I’m trying to but I don't remember anything else.” She wouldn't tell him about the strange feeling of familiarity she had when she had first seen him. That would be too dangerous. “You were in her dreams even when you weren't in captivity. So can you just go into people's dreams? Can you still do that?”“No. Her dream was the only one I could get into without being in captivity. But My freedom does come at a price. It was hard to lure the brides with my soul, and certainly, I prefer this freedom to that.”“Did killing her hurt you? Since the gems are supposed to be a pair.”“I struck her stomach.”“Why didn't you strike her in the heart or behead?”“I wanted to behead her and take her heart as my own; a litt

He heaved a sigh and sat next to her. “Well, it was after being King. I think the wars I had fought strengthened the connection with my gem; the lives I had taken fed it, and I dreamt of Xinora — well, she dreamt of me. It was the first time I would be in anyone's dreams.”Belladonna nodded, taking a mental note of that. “She was crying and lonely, and because the Gem perceived its master to be distressed, it sought a connection and found me. Xinora was terrified when we met; I was confused, too; it was strange. But then, I realized who she was and why I was there. At that time, I really wanted to come back here, to Vestros, but I knew it wasn’t time, I wasn't powerful enough back then.” He paused, before he continued. “The White King would kill me easily, but being in her dreams was like fate being on my side. She was the only weapon that could be used to kill me—”The only weapon?“Wait. Only a Bearer can kill a Bearer?”“Yes.” “So,” she turned to him squarely so she wouldn't mi

“And you didn't tell me? Why?”“It was over two centuries ago.” He stood up. “She stayed dead during those times, why would I think anything would come out of her now?”Belladonna said nothing and Alaris continued. “With you, I believed she had already been replaced. A new Master, her time was over, gone. The gems will always have their masters, I have discovered. At first, I was worried, but then you proved to be more than one with a mere link.”“I had visions of her. I told you everything.”He shrugged. “I thought it was just her lingering presence since she was the one who was connected to the gem before you. They are just mere visions, they don't suggest a powerful presence to get bothered about.”“You must be joking,” she stated, flabbergasted. “I had dreams of her every time and nothing ever really happened as a result,” he replied with a dismissive tone.“You know that is not true.”“Nothing “real” ever really happened.”With a realization, she stood up. “You are doing it aga

It felt compelling to desire more, it felt right… yet it didn't.Alaris pulled away being the first one to snap back from the spark pulling them together. “I’m sorry, I shouldn't have done that.” He was gone in a flash, leaving her flustered. She couldn't think; the foreign and overpowering feeling was a driving force that sent her out of the room to go after him. She did, reaching the surface, however, and feeling the warm glow of the moon on her skin. Something else seemed to have possessed her, and she went towards the lake instead, strangely seeking the comforting feeling of the water and the floating relief. The reflection of the full moon was cast over the still water and the trees seemed to create a path for her. She walked into the water as a shadow warrior emerged from behind her; the only one of Alaris' shadow warriors that wasn't killed. It swiftly moved into the water, reaching out to pull her back but she turned sharply to it. “Go Back!” She ordered, her voice a gr

I knew I would be lacking the moment I saw that annoying thing healing your ankle with his flames,” he laughed, the sound dry of humour as he swept his hand over his hair, pushing it back. “At that moment, I knew there were many things that I lacked, many skills, so many things. I might have been a King there but here, I am like a child. I’m not better than any of those dragon shifters. I’m useless.” “You are not.”With a huff, he sat down next to her, feeling exhausted. “My pretense to know what I am doing can no longer save me. I’m fighting a lost war, Nightshade and you can see it.”He turned to her, to find her shaking her head. “Don't lie to me.”“I’m not.”“Alaris—”“Don't try to inspire me, it won't work.” “I wasn't trying to inspire you, I just want to tell you how disap
