“What is your name again?” The great noble’s tune shifted hues, turning affable once again.
However, Lili felt something else from that seemingly amiable tone - it was seething anger. It made her step back a little, but soon recovered after she remembered what she did to the noble.
“Lili, please call this servant Lili. S-Sir noble.” The young lady lowered her head, refusing to raise it unless she received a verdict. Despite hearing the friendly mood of the great noble, she still felt the threat of death laying above her head.
“What a pleasant name you have.” The noble nodded, he slipped a glimpsed at the paling headmistress and smiled. No one knew what was running through his head.
Cold sweat trickled down from Lili’s brows, her voice trembling. “I have no excuse, please punish me!”
Instead of replying, the noble turned toward the old mistress. A dark-colored seal appearing on his palms. She waved it in front of the old lady. Mirth creeping into his pudgy lips. “I also need an assistant for one of my ventures in the capital. Can I take her, Anna?”
The lips of the old mistress shuddered. Her eyes turned listless.
“Hm, you don’t want to?” The pudgy noble’s eyes shifted into slits, his smile turning deeper and deeper.
“No, it’s not that lord noble. B-But the children need her here, lord baron.” The old mistress stuttered, her voice shaking for an unknown reason. “I need her help. I’m already old. Not strong enough to handle the heavy tasks as compared before.”
“That’s indeed a problem,” frowned the noble. “Then how about this…”
The pudgy man glanced at the trembling young lady on the floor, “I’ll exchange her for the little girl over there. I’ll leave, hm, little Betha here to help you.”
“B-but…” The old mistress’s face fell.
“I only have this piece of patience, Anna.” The noble lifted his finger, checking his nails. “I really need her help this time. We must not waste a talent like her, Anna. She’ll do well on that store of mine. And she’s going to be perfect!”
Silence loomed, filling each corner of the room. The atmosphere turned stony. No one spoke for a few seconds.
“I’ll go.” Lili raised her head. “Thank you for considering me.”
Lili sensed the malice directed towards the old mistress. Some guards behind even held the hilt of their swords, ready to pull their weapons out anytime. This, she rushed her reply, hoping to help the old mistress.
The pudgy man’s chortled, ignoring the old mistress. He glanced at Lili in deep thought.
However, the face of the old mistress paled. Her face crumpled, akin to an old piece of paper. Fortunately, she immediately hid it away from the noble.
“There you go,” said the noble. He gestured, making the guards take a step back. He shifted his gaze, watching Lili with interest. “Don’t worry, I’ll make sure she’ll have one of the best jobs in my business. Anyway, I can always buy an extra shirt, but not a talent.”
“Thank you, great noble," whispered Lili. She sighed in relief after realizing that the noble would not pursue the 'tea incident' and the disrespect of the old mistress.
Her teacher in Antacastian etiquette told her that a noble could even decapitate a commoner once they're disrespected. The law court wouldn't even peek at their case, especially a case of an orphan and an old lady from some random orphanage.
"Anyway, I am a bit in a rush," said the pudgy noble.
"Half a day. Is that enough for you to prepare?" The noble smiled at the golden-eyed lady.
Lili froze, stumped at the rapid turn of events. She expected it would take three days, just as usual. But half a day…
She wished to ask for more time, opening her mouth… "But…"
The noble frowned after hearing her first word. The noble’s shifting expression stopped Lili from continuing her words. Thus, she immediately changed her tune. “As you will, great noble."
“That’ll be great,” the noble clapped and chortled. “Go ahead. Oh, bring the kids with you. I’m going to have a long talk with Anna.”
Lili stood from the ground, her head still lowered. She glanced at the old mistress. The old lady met her gaze with a strained smile, telling her to follow the order. She took the shock kids with her, bringing them to the upper floors of the orphanage.

Lili heard her heart galloping, her thoughts scattered as she and the children arrived at the orphanage’s second floor. Her feet brought her to the room of the children. The only place aside from the kitchen where she felt at peace.
“Sis Lili, you walk so fast.”
“Yeah, Big Sis.”
“It felt like you were running away from a thief.”
Lili turned and saw the three children huffing. Her heart softened for them. She pinched the trio’s silly faces and said, “You just don’t exercise, unlike me. You should go outside more and strengthen your bodies.”
“Sis Lili, are you really going with us?” asked Aldis, gazing with zeal and curiosity. “To the territory of the noble?”
Lili’s face stiffened, muffled after hearing the question. Truthfully, she doesn’t wish to go, but she had no choice. The noble had already given his verdict.
“Yeah, it looks like the noble needs talent in the store.” Lili gave him a wry smile. “The noble might be short of staff. You heard it, right? That I’m an exceptional talent!”
“Great! Sis Lili would be there.” Aldis jumped in delight.
“It’ll be great that I won’t have to face Betha’s nagging too. Hurray!” The black-haired youth named Nicol guffawed.
The silent young girl named Betha stared at the young lad and rolled her eyes. She stared at Lili in deep thought. Though she felt happy that she would stay, she still felt something amiss. After all, she saw the expression of the old mistress before they left the room. She was extremely pale.
Unlike the two blokes, she also knew the punishment of offending a noble. Thus, the odd kind tone of the noble despite what Lili had done somehow bothered her.
“Sis Lili,” asked Betha. “Will you be alright?”
Lili strode forwards and ruffled the young girl’s hair until it turned into a bird’s nest. She lowered her head up to her ears and whispered, “I will be alright. Do your best to help the old mistress. She’s not getting any younger anymore.”
“But…”
Lili immediately put her finger on the young girl’s lips, stopping her from uttering any words. She eyed the young lass. “Don’t scare them. You have always been quick-witted. I’ll do my best to protect myself.” She then turned to Nicol and Aldis. “I’ll also help the two. Perhaps I will also meet your other elder brothers.”
Betha pursed her lips, holding the hems of Lili’s old skirt. “Promise me you’ll return.”
Lili thought hard for a moment and said. “I will. I’ll ready my things first.” She ruffled Betha’s hair before turning towards the young lads.
“Aldis and Nicol, get your things ready!”
“Ai!” The two lads tittered before running to pick their things.
Lili walked out of the children’s room, striding towards the small attic atop the orphanage. The old mistress gave her a personal room as an orphanage staff. Though most of the time, it’s in the claws of the little roaming brats.
With a heavy heart, she started arranging the things she needed to bring. She only had a few personal possessions. So she would make it even if she doesn’t rush. She pulled her drawer open, pulling a feathered pen and a bottle of ink. Then she started writing a letter. One for the children. The other for the old mistress.
Half a day of preparing was not enough to say the goodbyes, especially to the little ones. Truthfully, Lili felt wretched after seeing the toddlers crying, after hearing the news about her eventual departure. But even though the pain stung, she had to hide it with a smile. She held her breath, stopping herself from crying.“Dun’ go! Dun’ go Lili!” A young girl held the hems of her skirt tightly. Her round eyes became moist. “I’ll be a good girl. I’ll help you wash the dishes. J-Just don’t go.”“Wah! Lili doesn’t want us anymore!” One little lad cried, warm drops rolling down from his eyes.“Hide her things! She mustn’t go!” A few capricious bunches skittered around her things. The little ones couldn’t stop themselves from pulling her things back to her room. They only went back to their room after one of the noble’s guards checked her out.Lili giggled at
The pitter-patters trickled, crafting rhythmic echoes as they fell on the ground. It was raining outside. Lili’s eyes slowly opened as the noise reached her ears, rousing her from a deep slumber.Darkness loomed, filling Lili’s sight. She felt her eyes spinning. She tried to stand, but her palms slid, making her fall back into the ground. The familiar scent of dirt-filled her nostril, making her squint. The stiff breeze whispered, piercing her straight to the bones. It was cold. Icy cold. She unconsciously reached out for the blanket but found none to grasp. Instead, the clanking rings of metal as it struck the ground was what she heard.Lili frazzled, confused, and tried anew. Yet, she soon realized its futility the hard way as she stumbled face first. The ground was slippery, the unique scent of damp moss entered her nostrils. Her hands also felt heavy, as if something was holding her wrist. Whatever it was, it was freezing and callous.Lili frowne
The prison cell was not-so-large, merely a small cuboid room about six feet by four. Not one piece of furniture was in sight, not even a creaky bed of hay or wood. Maybe if one would count the manacles binding Lili as furniture, then the number of furniture would rise from zero to one. The walls had this mossy scent, while thick gray bricks and dust filled the room. This cell itself seemed to have not been used for quite a long time. The scent of rust wafted out of the metal bars, intermixing with the weird scent of grass. She had no one to accompany her aside from the squeaky rats running out of nowhere from time to time.“So that’s the place where the grassy scent came from.” Lili raised her head, gazing at the small barred window. The small open window kept the cell from being overly suffocating. The small opening was the only thing that gave her light in the day and night. The silence of being alone for an entire day aside from when her food got d
Lili’s eyes lit up as the old mistress pulled her out of the dark, moist dungeon. The oak wood door separating the outside and the dark prison creaked open. The peeking light forced her to cover her eyes, forcing her to shut her eyes. After a few seconds, her golden pupils opened, adjusting herself to the light. The young lady blinked around, watching the wide sprawling halls with spiky orbs lighting the path. Her teacher told her of those expensive lights. Those orbs were called magicites; magical spheres crafted from monster cores by rune magus. The orbs filled the expansive halls every four or five meters, illuminating the entire halls. There was also the long crimson-hued carpet extending throughout the floor. And then there were the guards. Lili gulped and almost ran away.“Ignore them. They won’t do anything,” The old mistress said. “Just continue walking. We’re already near.”Lili’s senses tingled as
The old mistress had spent the entire first day answering Lili’s never-ending questions. Despite knowing that she would soon become part of the auction as a product, the young lady remained as chatty as ever. All as if she had thrown her worries into the wind. And as for the second today, the old mistress planned to tell Lili what she needed to do while preparing her for the auction. After all, Lili will have to meet the master of the entire city tomorrow. The true noble whom the old mistress once served. And part of that plan was to make her presentable and not by her own standards, but by the standards of the nobility.Staring at the gorgeous dresses and gowns she wore one by one, Lili felt a bit suffocated. At first, she still felt passionate, but after the umpteenth dress, something broke in her. She remembered the stray chicken she caught a few weeks ago. After she pulled all the feathers, she stuffed the chicken with herbs and condiments before being dipped
Dragons were once the ruler of the entire continent. Mighty creatures of the olden days. They ruled the world through the Heart of Magic, the heart of the first primordial dragon. Some said it was a gem, while some theorized that it was a beating heart. Whatever it was, the heart of magic was the source of all the arcane arts, the source of all mana.It was also known to have brought the first life to exist. The very origin of magic arts. The heart of magic allowed dragons to rule for a thousand years, deigning them nigh immortality. Despite this, their rule was just and brought prosperity to the entire continent of Endymion.Until that fateful day when the first human stumbled into the tallest mountains, where the dragons live. It was a man. A man blessed with a gift of tongue. A master of arcane arts. He came wishing for the young dragon princess' hands, claiming that he loved her so. And in three years, with his honeyed but poisoned words, he convinced the dr
Amid the laughs and smile, three knocks hummed from the magical Oakwood door, interrupting the discussion of Lili and the old mistress. The arching smile on the old lady’s face slowly receded as she gazed at the magical door. Being able to knock through the magic protections, she was sure they were the old master’s direct subordinates. She wondered who’d it be."It's time. Get ready, Lili." The old mistress strode forward, clasping Lili's icy palms. "Don't worry about anything. Keep yourself collected. Just answer the master's questions, hiding nothing."'Knock. Knock. Knock.'The old mistress paced and dragged the door open. A creaky echo reverberated throughout the room. She immediately caught two shadows waiting outside the room. One wore a full-plated armor, a walking tin can as a guard, while the other was a sharp-eyed middle-aged woman. The two visitors' eyes grew three-sizes after gawking at the old mistress. The middle-aged
The sprawling hallways were nothing but a giant labyrinth in Lili’s eyes. Each corner they turned skewed her sense of direction. It turned haywire. She couldn’t even determine which was north or south anymore. What’s worse is that even though the magicites illuminated their path, she could feel that someone was watching them from the thinly veiled shadows.Lili trudged forwards, keeping her eyes focused on the middle-aged lady named Loth. Death could only be the ending once she loses her way in this place. She was sure of it. She could feel that the deeper they go, the worse the feeling became. She stared at the back of the middle-aged lady, thinking whether if she should ask a question.“The castle itself is a maze,” said Loth as she started a conversation, breaking the suffocating silence of the eerie castle halls. Perhaps sensing the confusion of the young lady trailing behind her. “A spell to deal with thieves and trespass
