MAE

"I didn't run. I mean, you guys ended up getting me back." I quickly said as soon as Isis was out of the room and Owen stood by the edge of my bed.

I could tell that he rarely came here only by the way Isis acted. She looked really, really surprised to see him here.

I was practically looking up to him from where I sat, and I noticed that the guards were looking at me funny. Was I supposed to stand?

He was just an employer, not some sovereign Lord. So, I decided that until he personally asked be to get off the bed, I would remain in place.

He said nothing about it though, just started with, "You are lucky to still be alive until now. I do not condone traitors. I was ready to kill your father before you stepped in with your promise. What makes you think you can just break it, because you want to?"

I shrugged, not really having anything to say.

"Words." His dark eyes pierced through mine, and I cleared my throat, answering,

"I'm sorry. Also repeating that I didn't end up escaping, you know… just putting that out there."

He said nothing for a long while, and truthfully this time I was almost peeing in my pants due to how dead silent it was. But I managed to stay calm on the outside, just looking up at him.

Looked like he noticed the way my eyes flickered between him and the guards, because he simply smiled crookedly and nodded at the men to exit. It took everything in me not to stick my tongue out at them. But I knew that it might just really get a gun to my head this time.

Owen's face remained impassive as he pulled out a seat and sat across from me, taking up all the space on the chair.

"I am not here to familiarize you with the workings of this place. Someone would do that. I'm here to pass a warning." He started.

"I'm sorry." I repeated, but he simply continued,

"There will be no repeat of what happened last night, or anything of the sort. If repeated, punishments will follow both for you and your father, and they will be nothing light. Do you understand?"

I could have just nodded and gone with it, but I just had to say something, "You killed my friend. And his friends too, just because he came to save me from you. You're a criminal, aren't you?"

My heart was in my mouth while I spoke but I tried to appear calm, still staring straight into his eyes.

Owen might be the scariest man I had ever seen, but I was the most inquisitive, fiercest woman I had ever known too, so…

He did not answer for a while, then he relaxed against his seat, pulled out a thick cigar and slipped it between his lips, "That was self defense. There were with guns too. Or did you choose to turn a blind eye to that?"

I noticed a tick in his right eyebrow as he spoke and I could not help but wonder if that meant something.

"So… you are not a criminal? Just a loan shark who casually carries guns around and threatens to kill the person who owes him?" I probed.

The look in his eyes had me waving the question off before I got killed here, on this bed. Fierce and inquisitive was what I said, not dumb.

Laughing nervously, I murmured,

"Never mind. I totally get what you said. I'll try my best to be good."

He rose to his feet at that and I could not help but ogle his tattoos for like the tenth time since he stepped in. Damn, this man was pure, expensive art.

I just knew his cologne would not be leaving this room or the chair for a while. I needed to have such expensive scent like that on me for once in my life, but I doubted that happening anytime soon.

Maybe another lifetime. This one would most likely be spent paying debt.

"You should watch your mouth more, little Rivera. Around here, it would get you in a lot of trouble. I'm in a good mood today, so I’ll let your shortcomings slide."

"First of all, I'm not little. I'm 24. Secondly, if you were not in a good mood… what exactly would happen to me?" I dared to ask, and no kidding, he immediately lowered himself to my face level, his both fists planting on the bed for support as he stared deep into my soul.

Smoke covered my face without warning and he watched me cough and struggle to breathe for a while, before telling me sternly,

"If I were not, I would have been rid of your annoying voice moments ago. And I would have been gawking at my favorite color, also."

I understood immediately, and my lips sealed shut as even the urge to cough or breathe died down at the same time.

He smiled—he seemed to do that a lot, even if most of those smiles were mocking ones—and then he straightened, peering into my eyes, still.

"Be good. There will be no second warning."

And then he spun around, and left the room, leaving me a shivering mess on the bed.

Noted. Avoid Owen Powers at all costs, unless absolutely necessary.

I plopped back down on the bed, scrunching my nose as the smell of that cigar didn't want to leave. Then I closed my eyes and thought of dad.

Isis did not let me sulk for long. She was back in the room in no time, calling everyone here jerks and telling me not to be too scared of Owen—he usually never concerned himself with trivial issues like what happened with strippers, according to her.

Well, it did not seem like that moments earlier, I thought to myself.

I finally agreed for her to take me around, show me this place.

The first creepy thing about this place was the fact that I found out that it was not mainly a club. In fact, the club was actually underground and the place was mainly a hub for different things.

The building had two floors. There was a boutique in here, a salon, a mall, they had a phone store in the mall too, and Isis casually went in there to get an tablet for a thousand dollars.

When I asked why she would waste so much money on that, she responded with a laugh,

"The money will come back, baby girl. It always does, in our world. You get it?" Then she winked and started walking ahead, showing me other places.

So basically, on the ground floor which actually only consisted of the boutique and the salon, there was a door that read; EMPLOYEES ONLY.

That was where the stairs to the underground club was hidden. That was some diabolical shit, if you asked me.

I could not help asking Isis, "Uh… why is the club underground? Why does it seem like everyone up here is oblivious to it?"

She smiled, "Because most of them are. Only special employees can go down there… special employees like us. And the people who come to the club are VIPs, top men in the country who do not want people knowing that they spend their time ogling strippers and even fucking them. Don't worry, once you start properly, you would get to see a lot of known men you would have never imagined here. Women too. If their name ever gets out to anyone, they always trace the perpetrator…"

I waited, but it seemed like she was done talking. Her feet lived from side to side like she was nervous, even with the way she smiled.

"They always trace the perpetrators and?"

She swallowed, then shrugged and continued walking, "… and, we never see him/her again. Be careful, Mae."

OWEN"What does he offer in return?" I asked, pudding a large balm of smoke from my lips.Marco replied, "A few more ghost workers were added to our list, and ten million dollars."I thought about it. He wanted my best snipers to track down a man who had posted online that he was the minister's competition and would be contesting right after he stepped down. The minister did not like competition, and so he wanted him gone. Well, both men were criminals so I had no problem agreeing. It was not like the person he asked us to take down was a saint."Do we go for it, Boss?" He asked me, and I nodded."Go for it, Marco. Pay the returns into the usual account when you are done.""Alright boss." And then he spun around and walked off.I stayed in my office, doing nothing for the first few minutes before deciding to check the surveillance cameras to see the people who had graced the club tonight.I looked through the clips, through different cameras, and I noticed that there was someone I d

MAE "These men really want to get me killed with the way they are offering me fat tips and asking me to go out with them." I complained to Isis. Since I started stripping in this place—Casa Eleganza, I had gotten an insane amount of tips that made me believe that I could actually make up to my father's debts and clear it before I died, or developed chronic waist pain—so much that I wouldn’t be able to strip anymore. "Girl, they are seriously obsessed with you and I have a plan." Isis dragged me to the bed and looked around our room as if anyone could be hiding under our bed. Then she stole a quick glance at the CCTV camera and then bent to whisper something into my ear. I tried to push her away, knowing that my stubborn friend would definitely be reprimanded or even punished for this, but she did not budge. She pushed my hands away and kept talking, "Accept one of them's advances. Give him the hottest dance or something… or even sex," I scrunched my nose up on hearing

OWEN I needed to clear my head. Marco had given me promises, but those were all they were—fucking promises. Hopefully, his plans would work, because if they did not, I would have to do it my way. And my way was certainly bloodier than what he wanted to do. I was never going down without a fight. I signed off a few packages, including the illegal ones, after which I called for my Personal Assistant and handed it to her so she could distribute it to everyone involved and I could be on my way to the club. "Hi, Sir…" Trisha's voice dripped with seduction as she walked inside my office and I simply assessed her from head to toe, having a cigar in my mouth. Her shirt was unbuttoned to almost the middle, revealing the cleavage of her huge tits. Her skirt was impossibly tight and a bit short at the same time. Hmm. Women did not control me or my dick, except I wanted it. So even as she stood in front of me, half naked, looking really sinful, I could not bring myself to be ex

Truthfully, a huge part of me was tired, and I felt like it was better to just give up… let them do whatever they liked to dad. I ignored his calls and everything. Even Liam's.Finally, I picked up Liam's call while dressing up to perform tonight. He told me that he had just seen dad and he has to rush him to the hospital. MAEHe asked me to follow him. I swear, I almost told him to never mind and just surrendered to finding some other way to help dad, but when he did not stop to even look back at me for confirmation, I ended up running after him. The walk seemed like it took ages. I wanted fm ask him if he was taking he to a quiet place where he could kill me in peace without anyone knowing because it was what it seemed like, but then I decided to shut my mouth before he decided to buy the idea.Owen took me to a corner which I never even knew was in this club—Isis never even showed me—and stopped in front of a giant door. I let out a sigh of relief as he opened the door with a card, then asked me to go in. I skeptically walked inside and even if I had expected the luxury, I was still stunned to see it.Foolishly, I spun around and asked, "Yours?"He did not answer, walking inside properly too and shutting the door. "Come," I said, outstretching my hand for her to take but instead she clutched my arm after I had twisted around, making me turn back to her."Hmm?" I asked when she just looked between me and the table. This woman really, really needed to know how to use her words when with me. The going mute on me shit was no longer cute."I need more alcohol, for liquid courage. One more glass?" She picked up the glass and pushed it in my direction, nudging her head at the bottle on the table.I picked up the bottle, forcing back a smile as I purposely almost filled her glass. What? I needed her as freaky as she could get.Mae stared at the glass for a long second, and I waited for her to ask me to reduce the quantity of the drink but she just shrugged and downed it in one go, holding her head after.A smirk graced my lips and I took her hand now, pulling her to the room. She did that t

MAEThe nightmares didn’t stop. It didn’t matter how many sleeping pills I took or how exhausted I was by the end of the day. Every time I closed my eyes, I was back in that bathroom, staring at Carter’s girlfriend, lifeless and broken on the tile floor. Sometimes, in the dreams, it wasn’t her—it was me, sprawled out, blood pooling beneath me. I’d wake up gasping, drenched in sweat, feeling like I’d never truly left that room. I thought the incident had not affected me that much—turned out I was so wrong.I started avoiding everyone. The girls at Casa Eleganza whispered behind my back, but I didn’t have the energy to care. They always gossiped about something—this time, it was me. I overheard snippets: "She's losing it," "She looks like a ghost," and the ever-popular, "She's gonna get herself kicked out if she keeps this up."Scar was the only one who dared to say it to my face. "Mae, you need to pull yourself together. You're going to get yourself kicked out." She told me one afterno

I just did not want to come to terms with what it was, exactly. As for talking, we barely said a word to each other until the car stopped right in front of a huge ass mansion. No, a castle. Was this the president's house? There was a low gate that opened automatically before he drove into the compound. My jaw was almost on the floor as I realized what was happening. OWEN"… finally, I am glad to be standing here with my mayor—Trevor, and I am sure that he would be the best thing to happen to this city." I promised them, sharing a look with Trevor, a practiced smirk on my face. He laughed, patting my shoulder.Trevor stood tall and powerful beside me, and to the crowd, Trevor was a lot bigger than I was. I was simply a billionaire fan who had several companies and made a lot of money.Trevor was the mayor, therefore, he ruled the city. They were so blind, loud and completely wrong. I did not hate it though…After the whole speech and pleasantries, I went back to my seat on the table and cooled off a bit, watching the ceremony go on.I was struggling to enjoy the party. It was not an unusual thing for me not to enjoy a party; the only unusual thing was the fact that I was bothered about not enjoying the party.Strange.I looked around for Mae a number of times, but it looked like she had left the party. There was a note which read; 'This shade of green would match your hair and eyes perfectly. Learn some manners before the said time.'Of course, I rolled my eyes at that. I wondered why those women flocked around him when he was such a brute. My subconscious literally laughed out loud at me, because we both knew why they were like that. Man was gorgeous. But still, I felt nothing but rage and pure hatred for him, considering the kind of man he was.Sighing, I stared at the dress Owen sent, a floor-length emerald green piece with a daring slit up the side. The fabric shimmered faintly under the light, making it look far more expensive than anything I’d ever owned. The matching clutch and heels sat beside it, equally as pretty.I hated this man, and being around him was the last thing I wanted, especially right now but staying home wasn’t an option. MAEI stole a drink and got myself drunk when I got home. I was off tonight and Eli was out working so I turned on some music and danced around in the room, then watched some movies on my phone. They had left Isis's iPad in here, but I could not bring myself to touch any of her stuff yet, and when Eli asked, I told him they were off limits too.My mind went back to my interaction with Owen. At least he was no longer on my neck about disloyalty and shit. Okay, and why did he ask me out? I finally voiced the most important question in my head.He had tons of other women at his beck and call that he could ask out and he chose to ask me. I could not help but think that it was because he felt guilty and pitied me, yet another part of me did not believe that. A man like Owen did not look like he had even the slightest pinch of pity in him. So, why?My body reacted to him, no doubt—which just meant that I was physically attracted to him—even if it had significantly reduced after the whole th

So I asked if I could speak to him on the phone or something, and that it was very important, but they asked me to pass the message through them.I tried to. She ran off, too. Not that I fully trusted this Carter of a guy, but this awfully sounded like something that woman can do; especially after all she had been through lately.I could have left Marco to find her and teach her a lesson… or even any of my snipers could do that, but I had a surprise for her, so I could not do that.As I drove, I tried to shake off the nasty feelings I had that kept screaming in my ear about the fact that she had gone through so much.
