Diane was practically buzzing with excitement as she helped Elise get ready. It was well known that she was always energetic and cheerful, but today there was an extra excitement to it that topped up the whole icing.

“Ma’am, when I heard the talk about it, I was so so excited. It even made me jump out of bed.”

“Mmm…” Elise smiled.

“And the sweetest part, you are going shopping today. I think today is so blessed. Everything began to feel right from the day you sat in that garden.”

She suddenly turned her face to Elise as if a realization had hit her. “Wow,” she mouthed. “Is something good happening in your horoscope? It feels like it.”

“Okay, that’s enough.” Elise shook her head with a light chuckle.

Quickly, Diane placed her hand on her lips. “I am sorry, I know I talk too much. I’m sorry, I will just prepare your bath.”

“Yeah, you should.” Elise nodded. She enjoyed it when Diane talked, though it got uncomfortable for her a few times. Yet, she was grateful for Alejandro’s choice

Elise felt her breath hitch. Her mind scrambled to process Lena’s words, but they settled like ice in her veins, causing her to feel numb.Murder? Clara had committed murder? Her fingers tightened against the fabric of her dress as her stomach twisted painfully. “What… what are you saying?” Lena watched her, unsure if she had done the right thing by informing her. “Clara committed murder,” she replied. “I saw it happen.”Elise shook her head, willing herself to think. Her memories of Clara were many things. Yes, it was bitter, frustrating, and even painful. She was always the daughter their parents prioritized and revered but murder? “It’s not possible. You are lying to me.” She forced out. “Clara… she can’t… you are lying.”“I would gain nothing if I lie about this to you. Your sister was young, and I know she did not understand the consequences of what she had done. But your parents understood it perfectly.”“I don’t understand. Tell me, how did everything happen?”“I’m not clear

Back at the store, Diane twirled the shopping bag in her hand as she waited for Elise to return. She had picked a couple of clothes that she liked, and what was left was for Elise to pay as she promised. Undeniably, Elise had spent some time and it was already beginning to worry Diane. But she stayed put, lightly tapping the bag against her legs. A few more minutes and she would check for her. But before she counted to 10, the door of the dressing room opened and Elise stepped out. Contrasting how she had walked in, she looked dull. But Diane ignored it anyway and rushed to her. “Do you like the dress?” Immediately she reached her, she probed. Her lips were still curved in excitement as she waited for a response. Elise blinked, raising her face to her. “Huh?”“I mean, the one you went to try on.” “Right! The dress.” Her mind took a second to process the question and it was only then that she realized that she had not even come out of the room with it. “Umm…” she stuttered slowl

As soon as Alejandro scooped Elise into his arms, sweat beads began to form on her face. There was no way Alejandro was supposed to know that she was not sick, and had only faked it. If he did, then she was scared of the issue that could come out of it. But as the warmth of his body pressed against her, a strange weakness settled in her limbs, her head feeling heavier than before.Putting her shame aside, and left with no other option, she burst out in tears, surprising Alejandro and Diane.Thankfully, the rest of Alejandro’s men had gone away. A frown formed on his forehead as he looked at her. “What is the problem?” He probed as he dropped her down.Elise was still faking tears, and to her luck, her body cooperated as it began to color red. By this time, Alejandro was really worried. “Lily, please tell me what the issue is. You are making me scared.”She finally wiped her face after being convinced that she had gotten his attention enough. Even that small movement made her fingers

Seeing the food initially, she had thought that she would take just three spoons and bring up an attitude about why she didn’t want to eat. Instead, she cleared every single thing on the plate, and the only thing that kept her from asking for more was the fear of seeming like a glutton.Alejandro must have noticed because a knowing smirk tugged at his lips as she cleared everything. “I’ll take that as a thank you for making me eat,” he murmured, setting the empty dish aside.Elise stiffened. “I wasn’t that hungry, I just did not want to waste food” she muttered, turning her face away.“Sure you weren’t.” His deep chuckle made her feel uneasy and she almost began regretting why she had not kept up with the not wanting to eat act. Before she could muster a comeback, Alejandro shifted, guiding her to lean back against the headrest. She blinked in confusion as he reached for her foot, pulling it gently onto his lap.“What are you doing?” Elise probed, blinking as she tried to raise hersel

Could they meet the next day? Elise's stomach dropped, like she had not read the content well. Alejandro’s phone was still in her hand and the name of the sender, Mariana was burning deep into her chest. It was not like it would have been a better offense if it was somebody else, but just maybe, it would have helped and made her feel less hurt. Just maybe, she would not have felt as low as she did at that moment. Every man in his right sense would fall for a girl like Mariana, and for their relationship to advance into a betrothal, then whatever she shared with Alejandro was deep. But what hurt the most in all of this was the ease in the text Mariana had sent. It could only mean that Alejandro had been in communication with her. What were the odds that he had not been meeting up with her under the guise of work? Why else would a woman who clearly knew he was married, and ‘he’ in the sense of the relationship they had shared text him that late for some private meeting? He definite

Yes, she knew she had a problem with communication. It was not like she never tried. Before she got into this arrangement with Alejandro, she was communicating her needs when her parents tossed her into it. Even with Alejandro, she had always been clear with what she wanted from the start. And when the time came, for him to keep to his words from the ‘communication,’ he acted like no conversation was ever heard. Different scenarios, but the same results repeated itself.Elise was starting to believe that every time she opened her mouth to communicate, the universe took it as an invitation to throw her into even worse situations that she had not asked for.Now sitting alone on the edge of her bed, she was still reeling in thoughts, wondering what the surprise was that Alejandro had for her. What were the chances that it was not the calm before the storm? She chuckled wearily at the thought that crossed through her head. As much as she wanted to wave it off as being too extreme, it w

Never would she have believed that to shut her down, her father was ever going to raise his hands on her. She saw it clearly, his fingers holding tightly to the picture frame as he approached her. The fear of what he was going to do with it almost made her heart skip out of its cage, but she held still. “Go ahead, hit me!” She yelled out, almost at the same time as she stood. Charles Stanton halted immediately, surprise evident in his eyes as he watched her challenge him. “No, do it.” She pressed on, “hit me.”“Father, is that not what you were about to do?”The air between them became tense, so much so that Margaret Stanton shifted uneasily in her seat. Clara’s lips that were curved into a smile watching her father almost harass Elise fell downwards. She stood up, “Father, are you going to let her talk to you that way?Charles's gaze rotated between Clara, and back to Elise and his grip on the picture frame was still tight though his hands dropped to his side. As soon as she arrived back home, Elise moved straight to her room and shut the door behind her. Her pulse was still raised from the confrontation with her parents and as much as she had acted like she was strong in their presence, she was not. Once she settled on her bed, she exhaled forcefully, pressing a hand on her forehead. The rush of adrenaline she had felt was fading, and now the emptiness of the whole situation was settling in her chest. Over and over again, the people that had caused her pain were the people that she cared about. Regardless of how she had acted indifferent towards them, a sure reality was that these people were her family. Talking about the murder that way was not part of her plan, but deep down, she hoped that they would think over it and be willing to change. But what were the odds? She took in another deep breath, shutting her eyes tight as though it helped clear the noise in her head. Long enough, she had understood that love was not what she shou

By the time Alejandro returned later in the day, Elise had moved back to the bedroom after spending her time sulking. She was on a couch in the room, curled up with a book she was not invested in, but passed as a distraction. She only noticed his presence when his cologne filled the air followed by the scent of blooming roses. Before she could get on her feet, Alejandro opened the door, smiling as soon as he saw her.“Lily.” “Alejandro, you are back.” She said almost immediately. “Yes,” he nodded.Elise stared at him with a thin smile on her lips, unsure what to say next. She looked at him again, and at the faint lines around his eyes from exhaustion, yet his smile was warm and maybe, boyish. His tie hung loosely on his neck, and his hair was disheveled, as though he had run his hands through it a hundred times. “You are sure you had a good day?”“Yes, of course. I did,” he mentioned, adjusting the bouquet of deep red roses in his arms.“Okay.” Elise nodded slowly, shifting her ga

“I think I feel better now.” Elise forced out, holding her neck. The bathroom tiles were cold against her knees, contrasting the feverish heat that radiated from her body. She was still sleeping when a wave of nausea hit her, and the next thing she was doing was running to the bathroom to retch. The icy feel of the tiles seeped through the thin fabric of her cotton pajamas, adding more to the inconvenience she was experiencing as her stomach churned. Her hands gripped the toilet’s rim, her knuckles pale, as another wave of nausea surged. Once again, she retched into the bowl, the sound of it coming straight from her lungs. Her throat burned with acid, and her eyes stung as the sweat beads on her forehead dropped into it. Yet, she did not allow the tears that consumed her to fall. Morning sickness was not a new term to her, but the experience was worse than she had seen in books and articles. It felt like her body was betraying her, every part of it giving in to the chaos that fil

Reminiscing about how fast things turned was probably not the wisest thing for Elise to be doing. Yet, she could not help but live it again. She remembered vividly how she was putting up with her family, and praying to move to college as soon as possible. Then out of no where marriage suddenly knocked. Not one born out of love, but an arrangement that she had to fulfill. It was suffocating to think about it because then she felt like her life was being tossed about and she had no control. If she was not optimistic about life, she feared what she would have done to herself in all those times. Moving forward and being with Alejandro was another roller coaster. On some days, she was loving it and on some others, it seemed completely unbearable. All of this went on and all she could hold on to was her firm belief that regardless of how and when, a day would come when she would have achieved her long life dream.Like an earthquake, pregnancy appeared and shook her world completely. When

Elise’s eyelids flapped open as the morning light filtered through the curtains casting lights across the room. Her body felt languid from everything that had happened the previous night and a slow smile formed on her lips as the memories rushed back to her mind. The faint ache in her muscles was a delicious reminder of Alejandro’s touch, his sweet words, and the way he explored every part of her with intentional care. She rolled onto her side, hugging the pillow as she let out a giggle. As if experiencing all of it afresh, she pressed her eyes shut and her legs tight as the chills ran through her.But then, her mind flicked to the Foundation event with the reality dawning on her that Alejandro had opted out of a major contract and even though they had an intimacy to clear out the tension of the previous day, it was a reality that was still going to hit them. She could still see the hatred in Mariana’s eyes as she spat out that Alejandro was going to regret his decision. Shaking her

Now they were back at their home, a breath of fresh air away from the confrontation that had happened at the Foundation event. Alejandro wanted to leave immediately, but Elise made him stay back as the event was not completely over, and she did not want him to miss out on some important interactions because of her. Amongst the number of things that happened, the major thing that stood out was Alejandro’s father supporting him to defend her. It was not like in front of her, he had ever outrightly voiced out his hate, but she could feel the disdain before now. “Thank you!” She nodded and stepped into the room while Alejandro locked the door behind her. “It’s nothing,” Alejandro mentioned as he watched her trying to take off her jewelry, a few steps away from him. He wanted to move to help her, but he did not trust himself, and the actions that he would take, so he turned away, He focused on undressing but turned back to her while his shirt was unbuttoned just halfway, revealin

The secondary living room was just a few rooms away from the main hall but it was a world away from the bling and decor of the charity event. Elise stood near the window, the cool glass pressing against her fingertips as she stared out mindlessly at the estate’s sprawling lawn. Alejandro paced behind her, his footsteps muffled by the thick rug. He took off his tuxedo jacket, tossed it over a chair, and hung his tie loose around his neck. “You didn’t have to hear that,” he said, his voice rough but much quiet like he was trying to pull himself back. “ I don’t know what she was thinking. Mariana, she has no right to do that.”Elise turned, her dress rustling faintly as she faced him. “You ended the contracts,” the words slipped out roughly from her lips. “With her family. Just like that.”He stopped pacing and locked his eyes on hers. “Yes, of course,” Alejandro moved closer, close enough that she could smell the faint cedar of his cologne. “They don’t get to talk to you like that. The charity event had drawn the city’s elite, pouring in as men in tailored suits with women wearing expensive jewels with their laughter mingling with the clink of champagne glasses. Ellse stood near the edge of the grand room, the gold necklace cool against her skin. It was beautiful, no doubt, but it sat there like an extra weight on her skin. After her encounter with Lucas and every other preparation that had to be carried out, she changed into a dress fitting for the event with a quick makeup touch-up.She smoothed her dress, a deep emerald that hugged her just enough to show the very faint curve of her stomach to only the people who could notice, while her eyes scanned the crowd.Alejandro arrived then, moving through the room like he owned it, which in a way, he did. It was their occasion and he was the face of Mendoza Holdings, the pioneer of the foundation. His tuxedo was sharp, with the black fabric catching the light as he moved, searching for Elise and his eyes found her

The events that took place at the previous dinner were possibly not lesson enough for Elise because on this morning again, she was dressing up to visit the Mendoza mansion. Alejandro adjusted his tie as he faced her. “Are you sure you want to go?”She tossed her lip gloss into her bag and nodded. “Yes.”Her encounter with Mariana was not the best, as much as she appreciated that she had been firm with her about staying off her child. But nothing else had happened after that. “You know you could just stay back though? I will come pick you up after work to join.”She heaved. “Alejandro, I want to be there. Your mom said the foundation does not usually give charity at this time of the year. It’s happening now because I am pregnant, at least from what she said. It will be wrong if I’m absent from the meeting.”He nodded against his will. “You have a point.”He was more worried because he was not going to be there with her especially as he had to go to work and leaving her with his mothe

As if Alejandro had read her mind, his voice cut through the elegant clatter of dinnerware being arranged.“Mother,” he said, his eyes burning with anger, “what is Mariana doing here?”The room stilled. Elise, still standing beside him, watched as Mrs. Mendoza’s face remained perfectly composed. Too composed like it was normal for Mariana to be present.Mrs. Mendoza let out a soft laugh, the kind that tried to brush tension away. “Darling, don’t be so dramatic. Mariana stopped by, and since we’re all family—regardless of…you know, past misunderstandings—I didn’t think there would be any harm in her joining us.”Elise didn’t flinch, at least not to the attention of anybody. But her grip around her clutch tightened, as her nails dug slightly into the soft leather. She scoffed. “Family.”How did she for a moment forget the people that she was dealing with?Alejandro’s face was still stiff. “Mother, you should have asked me before making her stay. It’s a family dinner, and I don’t want h
