Quietly, Alejandro sat in his lounge which was only lighted by the estate’s walkway light that seeped in. He had been sitting there for the longest time with his fingers wrapped loosely around the stem of his wine glass.

The pale-colored liquid in it swirled slowly as Alejandro tilted it, his gaze focused on nothing in particular. His parents’ visit had brought back memories that he did not exactly appreciate to him.

Alejandro exhaled, placing the glass back down on the table that was in front of him. As soon as his mother stepped out, his father’s request had been straightforward. “We need you back at the company.”

He leaned back against the couch he sat on, his fingers softly massaging his temples. From what his father had said, Alejandro’s uncle and his cousin had been doing their best to take ownership of the company especially as it was a family business.

When Alejandro had been in charge even as it was for a short period, they had stayed away.

But just after his acci

Her breath came in short gasps after Alejandro’s statement. She looked at him barely unable to form any words. Alejandro’s lips rushed back to her neck, trailing kisses from her neck down towards her chest. And every one of his actions sent a chill through her, causing her toes to curl. Her hands, which had initially rested on his shirt, tightened. His presence was too intoxicating and even as she was not certain what she wanted, it was much difficult to resist.“Elise,” he murmured, with his breath getting hotter against her skin. “Do you have any idea what you do to me?”“I don’t do anything.” She replied softly, moving her eyes away. Alejandro chuckled slightly. “Oh, you don’t know.”Her pulse fluttered as he kissed the center of her neck, staying there for a moment before trailing lower. His fingers brushed against her jaw, coaxing her to look at him. When she did, the intensity of his dark gaze made her stomach tighten. “I want you.”She gulped.Alejandro’s lips continued clai

Elise stirred, her body adjusting to the presence by her side. Warmth radiated all about her, coupled with the minor sores that ran from her thighs to her limbs. Slowly, her eyes opened and as she stared into the space in front of her, it became more clear to her that Alejandro’s arm was draped over her. Quickly she turned to her side to meet his eyes wide open as he stared at her.He stayed beside her, his gaze fixed on her with a smile on his lips that made her swallow, especially as every memory that they shared the previous night was clear in her head. The morning light that seeped in through the curtains highlighted his features making him more irresistible to her, or maybe she was still under the effect of his touch.“Good morning, Lily. I hope you slept well.” His voice was deep, and seductive which made her wonder if he had slept at all. When it dawned on her how close she was to him, her first instinct was to jerk away and create some distance between them. But as soon as

It was not up to ten minutes after Alejandro stepped out that Diane entered with a wide smile and a tray that held a glass of a smoothie. “Good morning Ma’am.”“Good morning.” Elise nodded in response, trying to shift her thought away from the discussion that she had with Alejandro earlier. Thankfully, she had managed to raise herself and slipped into a light gown that covered her. She reached for the glass and after gulping down the drink, went through her usual routine with Diane. Which basically was to prepare her bath water, dress up, and clean her room. Once they were done, Diane probed. “Should I bring your food over here?”Elise furrowed her brows for a moment before answering. “Let’s go to the dining room instead.”Diane’s eyes widened slightly but she quickly recovered. “Of course, Ma’am.”Just the previous day, Elise had mentioned that she wanted to sit in the garden, and now she was going to eat in the dining room. Something that she had never seen her do since she mov

Actively, Elise had never craved the thought of being Alejandro’s wife. That was never part of the plan, even when her parents did their own thing. Call her selfish but she had agreed to their marriage mainly to secure her future as a doctor and buy her freedom from her family that had never truly cared for her. It was a simple plan, one in which she completely did her part. But did it really turn out simple?Because no matter how much Elise told herself that this arrangement was temporary and that she was only here for her goals even as Alejandro was refusing to let her go, she couldn’t deny the tangled emotions creeping into her heart.Which only came alive again as Diane talked of the ladies that flocked around Alejandro. She really should not care about those things. The thought of stepping into a grand event like the company’s dinner at Alejandro’s side, as his wife made her stomach churn. What unsettled her most was not clear yet. Elise was not sure if it was being by his sid

Hours had passed and Elise was done with breakfast, left with nothing else to do. She had browsed through some things online and had ordered a chessboard that she planned to use to keep herself busy while being in Alejandro’s place. Her mind still circled around the thought of seeing Clara at the event later in the day, and somehow she panicked, but her resolve was much firmer now. Diane had taken care of her laundry, and while Elise sat on the edge of the bed staring at nothing in particular, a knock came on the door. Before she could stand, Diane who had been folding some clothes rushed to it. “I’ll get it.”As soon as she opened, one of the workers came into view holding a black box wrapped with a silver ribbon and another fancy bag. “A package came in for the Madam.”“Oh, thank you.” Diane nodded, then took it from the staff before closing the door behind her.“I guess it’s the dress he mentioned,” Elise whispered to only her hearing then reached for it. The way Diane smiled, i

The voice was very familiar, so much so that it sparked an ache through Elise’s chest. And before she lifted her face, she was almost silently praying that it belonged to her. The moment her gaze settled on the lady in front of her, the words, “You?” escaped her lips unrestrained. Lena stood still, shocked too on seeing Elise. It was almost a decade since she last sent her eyes on her, a decision that she had to take for good. For a moment, uncertainty filled her mind on seeing Elise, she had to choose between staying back, pretending that everything was okay, or bolting out of the door. Which in itself would have made her seem stupid.Elise stared at her with the warmth that clouded her eyes as she took in the features of the lady who had loved her and cared for her while she worked as their housekeeper, Lena. She had a petite size that seemed cute with her brown eyes, the same as Elise remembered, and her very dark hair that was neatly parked into a bun. After a very long time, E

The minutes passed with Elise stealing glances at Lena while she worked on her face. Naomi on the other side occasionally showed Elise hairstyles on her tab to know her preference. A process that Diane mostly made the picks as Elise struggled to choose what she wanted. By the time Lena stepped back, it was hard to recognize the woman sitting in front of the mirror, even to Elise herself. Her flawless skin even looked more graceful, and her eyes gleaned with soft smoky shadows that Lena had made. And the subtle shade of crimson on her lips gave it that pop that felt so bold. The blush that ran along her cheekbones was just enough to maintain Elise’s natural elegance and beauty. “Okay, you are all set,” Lena announced as she sprayed some liquid on Elise’s face, while her left palm blocked her eyes. Then stepped aside to give Elise a better view of herself. For about the next ten seconds, Elise was lost at what to say. She had relaxed when she knew that Lena was the person that woul

Lucas stood just outside, in front of the black car holding the car door open as Alejandro guided Elise out of the house. In front of that car and behind it were a few of Alejandro’s men seated inside other cars. A measure that Alejandro had always put in place for security reasons. Elise swallowed countless times as she moved closer. The life she lived now was not a life she had ever imagined herself in, despite having big dreams. Her heels clicked against the pavement as she walked, and as soon she slid into the seat at the back, she exhaled. An exhale that was quickly short-lived, as Alejandro settled beside her. The door closed with a soft thud, and Lucas swiftly moved to the other side, taking his position behind the wheel. As if on cue, the engine of every other car that was with them came alive once Lucas started his, and in no time, they pulled out of the large estate. Alejandro’s estate. Through the tinted glasses, Elise’s gaze swept over the city’s landscape as

By the time Alejandro returned later in the day, Elise had moved back to the bedroom after spending her time sulking. She was on a couch in the room, curled up with a book she was not invested in, but passed as a distraction. She only noticed his presence when his cologne filled the air followed by the scent of blooming roses. Before she could get on her feet, Alejandro opened the door, smiling as soon as he saw her.“Lily.” “Alejandro, you are back.” She said almost immediately. “Yes,” he nodded.Elise stared at him with a thin smile on her lips, unsure what to say next. She looked at him again, and at the faint lines around his eyes from exhaustion, yet his smile was warm and maybe, boyish. His tie hung loosely on his neck, and his hair was disheveled, as though he had run his hands through it a hundred times. “You are sure you had a good day?”“Yes, of course. I did,” he mentioned, adjusting the bouquet of deep red roses in his arms.“Okay.” Elise nodded slowly, shifting her ga

“I think I feel better now.” Elise forced out, holding her neck. The bathroom tiles were cold against her knees, contrasting the feverish heat that radiated from her body. She was still sleeping when a wave of nausea hit her, and the next thing she was doing was running to the bathroom to retch. The icy feel of the tiles seeped through the thin fabric of her cotton pajamas, adding more to the inconvenience she was experiencing as her stomach churned. Her hands gripped the toilet’s rim, her knuckles pale, as another wave of nausea surged. Once again, she retched into the bowl, the sound of it coming straight from her lungs. Her throat burned with acid, and her eyes stung as the sweat beads on her forehead dropped into it. Yet, she did not allow the tears that consumed her to fall. Morning sickness was not a new term to her, but the experience was worse than she had seen in books and articles. It felt like her body was betraying her, every part of it giving in to the chaos that fil

Reminiscing about how fast things turned was probably not the wisest thing for Elise to be doing. Yet, she could not help but live it again. She remembered vividly how she was putting up with her family, and praying to move to college as soon as possible. Then out of no where marriage suddenly knocked. Not one born out of love, but an arrangement that she had to fulfill. It was suffocating to think about it because then she felt like her life was being tossed about and she had no control. If she was not optimistic about life, she feared what she would have done to herself in all those times. Moving forward and being with Alejandro was another roller coaster. On some days, she was loving it and on some others, it seemed completely unbearable. All of this went on and all she could hold on to was her firm belief that regardless of how and when, a day would come when she would have achieved her long life dream.Like an earthquake, pregnancy appeared and shook her world completely. When

Elise’s eyelids flapped open as the morning light filtered through the curtains casting lights across the room. Her body felt languid from everything that had happened the previous night and a slow smile formed on her lips as the memories rushed back to her mind. The faint ache in her muscles was a delicious reminder of Alejandro’s touch, his sweet words, and the way he explored every part of her with intentional care. She rolled onto her side, hugging the pillow as she let out a giggle. As if experiencing all of it afresh, she pressed her eyes shut and her legs tight as the chills ran through her.But then, her mind flicked to the Foundation event with the reality dawning on her that Alejandro had opted out of a major contract and even though they had an intimacy to clear out the tension of the previous day, it was a reality that was still going to hit them. She could still see the hatred in Mariana’s eyes as she spat out that Alejandro was going to regret his decision. Shaking her

Now they were back at their home, a breath of fresh air away from the confrontation that had happened at the Foundation event. Alejandro wanted to leave immediately, but Elise made him stay back as the event was not completely over, and she did not want him to miss out on some important interactions because of her. Amongst the number of things that happened, the major thing that stood out was Alejandro’s father supporting him to defend her. It was not like in front of her, he had ever outrightly voiced out his hate, but she could feel the disdain before now. “Thank you!” She nodded and stepped into the room while Alejandro locked the door behind her. “It’s nothing,” Alejandro mentioned as he watched her trying to take off her jewelry, a few steps away from him. He wanted to move to help her, but he did not trust himself, and the actions that he would take, so he turned away, He focused on undressing but turned back to her while his shirt was unbuttoned just halfway, revealin

The secondary living room was just a few rooms away from the main hall but it was a world away from the bling and decor of the charity event. Elise stood near the window, the cool glass pressing against her fingertips as she stared out mindlessly at the estate’s sprawling lawn. Alejandro paced behind her, his footsteps muffled by the thick rug. He took off his tuxedo jacket, tossed it over a chair, and hung his tie loose around his neck. “You didn’t have to hear that,” he said, his voice rough but much quiet like he was trying to pull himself back. “ I don’t know what she was thinking. Mariana, she has no right to do that.”Elise turned, her dress rustling faintly as she faced him. “You ended the contracts,” the words slipped out roughly from her lips. “With her family. Just like that.”He stopped pacing and locked his eyes on hers. “Yes, of course,” Alejandro moved closer, close enough that she could smell the faint cedar of his cologne. “They don’t get to talk to you like that. The charity event had drawn the city’s elite, pouring in as men in tailored suits with women wearing expensive jewels with their laughter mingling with the clink of champagne glasses. Ellse stood near the edge of the grand room, the gold necklace cool against her skin. It was beautiful, no doubt, but it sat there like an extra weight on her skin. After her encounter with Lucas and every other preparation that had to be carried out, she changed into a dress fitting for the event with a quick makeup touch-up.She smoothed her dress, a deep emerald that hugged her just enough to show the very faint curve of her stomach to only the people who could notice, while her eyes scanned the crowd.Alejandro arrived then, moving through the room like he owned it, which in a way, he did. It was their occasion and he was the face of Mendoza Holdings, the pioneer of the foundation. His tuxedo was sharp, with the black fabric catching the light as he moved, searching for Elise and his eyes found her

The events that took place at the previous dinner were possibly not lesson enough for Elise because on this morning again, she was dressing up to visit the Mendoza mansion. Alejandro adjusted his tie as he faced her. “Are you sure you want to go?”She tossed her lip gloss into her bag and nodded. “Yes.”Her encounter with Mariana was not the best, as much as she appreciated that she had been firm with her about staying off her child. But nothing else had happened after that. “You know you could just stay back though? I will come pick you up after work to join.”She heaved. “Alejandro, I want to be there. Your mom said the foundation does not usually give charity at this time of the year. It’s happening now because I am pregnant, at least from what she said. It will be wrong if I’m absent from the meeting.”He nodded against his will. “You have a point.”He was more worried because he was not going to be there with her especially as he had to go to work and leaving her with his mothe

As if Alejandro had read her mind, his voice cut through the elegant clatter of dinnerware being arranged.“Mother,” he said, his eyes burning with anger, “what is Mariana doing here?”The room stilled. Elise, still standing beside him, watched as Mrs. Mendoza’s face remained perfectly composed. Too composed like it was normal for Mariana to be present.Mrs. Mendoza let out a soft laugh, the kind that tried to brush tension away. “Darling, don’t be so dramatic. Mariana stopped by, and since we’re all family—regardless of…you know, past misunderstandings—I didn’t think there would be any harm in her joining us.”Elise didn’t flinch, at least not to the attention of anybody. But her grip around her clutch tightened, as her nails dug slightly into the soft leather. She scoffed. “Family.”How did she for a moment forget the people that she was dealing with?Alejandro’s face was still stiff. “Mother, you should have asked me before making her stay. It’s a family dinner, and I don’t want h
