My body starts to ache from the shift. I never thought I would be able to hear my bones crack, but that sound was repeatedly playing in my mind.
“Does it hurt for you?” I ask, rubbing my arms and legs.
“No, it gets easier the more you do it,” He slightly glances at me as he drives.
It wasn’t just my body that was taking a toll on me; it was my mind as well. I never imagined something like this happening to someone like me—a woman who lived everyday life with good parents and friends. I even loved what I did for a living, which was hard to come by for most people.
“What am I supposed to do now?” I ask myself, but Thane replies, “You can’t go back, at least not yet.”
“If I’m not there, they’ll suspect me.”
“I’m not taking you back, Evette,” his voice sounded more serious, “ They’ll lock you up for a crime you never committed.”
Damn it, he was right, but that didn’t make me feel any better. On the contrary, I felt utterly helpless now; I looked out the window watching the trees go by when I caught a glimpse of something rushing through the trees.
“Hey, Thane? I think there’s something else out here-” but before I can finish my sentence, another giant wolf rushes into the ghostly streets, and Thane stomps on the brakes, throwing out his arm to stop me from slamming my head. But the seatbelt squeezed the life out of me.
I stared at the new wolf, who blocked our way forward. His eyes glowed a vivid green, and his fur was so dark it had the faintest hint of blue from the moonlight. I see Thane grip his steering wheel, turning his knuckles white, “ Stay in the car,” he growls as he gets out. I watch as he walks out into the foggy street.
Who was this other wolf? The more I look at him, the more curious I get, and I end up getting out of the car. Thane sees me, and his jaw clenches, “I told you to stay inside, Evette!”
“Yeah, yeah,” I wave him dismissively as I approach the new wolf, whose eyes were locked on me. Suddenly, the wolf shifts to human form, revealing thick hair, the color of his fur, and eyes that held a cold heart.
Thane grabs my arm, “You know your unwelcome Atticus,” he says, and I could hear the venom in his voice.
Atticus looks at me, and I feel a sudden jolt through my body, “She’s mine as well,” his voice honeyed, as if he was talking to a lover, but I could hear resentment behind it; I finally shook my head at what he said.
“Wait, what?” I turned to Thane, “Didn’t you say you were my mate?”
He sighs, “Yes, but-” Atticus interrupts him.
“Did he not tell you we are twins and our prophecy say we share the same mate?” Atticus wears a smug look as he looks at his brother.
Thane takes a deep inhale, “Unfortunately, no, I didn’t get to that quick enough.”
I stare at Thane then to Atticus, “Wait a minute, so your telling me, your both are supposed to be my soul-mates?”
‘What the ever-living fuck!?’ I think to myself. It was hard enough knowing I had one mate but now two?
“Good lord, “ I look up at the sky,” You wanna through something else into this too?!” I ask an unjust god.
“We don’t have time for this, move Atticus; I’m taking her back with me,” Thane demands. I felt like a mouse caught in between two cats. These two seemed to not be on good terms.
“Why should I? When I know you're going to try and keep her from me.” I could see a flash of hurt in Atticus’ eyes, but it was gone in the blink of an eye. My heart suddenly felt heavy.
‘Was it me, who was feeling this or-’ I cut myself short in my thoughts. If they were both my mates, could I sense things from them too? Maybe this feeling, I couldn’t pinpoint, was Atticus.
As the two clashed, I finally decided to raise my voice, “Hey! Look, I’ve been a werewolf for a short time, and I don’t know what’s going on with you two, but I decide to go with whoever I choose, not you.”
The two brothers give each other a leering look; I finally make my decision, “I’m going with Thane, only because I’m acquainted with him and not you. I’m sorry.” For some reason, cutting Atticus off felt like a harsh blow to me, but I didn’t know him that well and I needed a place I felt reasonably safe at.
I see Thane smirk at his brother, I elbow him in the ribs, and he groans.
“It could have easily been switched, don’t be an ass.”
As I look at Atticus, I see his fists clench, but something told me it wasn’t from anger….
He shifts and leaves without saying another word.
I grab my arm, feeling a slight sting in my heart. Why in the world was I feeling so bad? I barely knew the guy.
“I’m sorry, I should have told you sooner,” Thane says, rubbing his neck, “Atticus would have shown up sooner or later. It’s inevitable.”
I turn back to the car, “I think I’ve had enough surprises today. Can we get to where we're going?” I ask, he nods, and we get in the car again; then I hear a slight whimper in my thoughts. It was my so-called wolf.
“How do you get your wolf to stop trying to talk to you?” I ask, annoyed.
“Are you not liking what she’s saying?”
“I honestly don’t want to talk to her….”
Thane is quiet for a moment, “There’s a lot you don’t know about us, but you can quickly learn. I’ll help you,“ The warmth in Thane’s voice brings some comfort to me. My mind just wasn’t in the suitable space; all I wanted to do was curl up into a ball and fade into the dark.
“I’m not letting you do that,” Thane suddenly says.
“Excuse me?” I ask, surprised.
“I heard you, you want to fade into darkness, but that is not happening.-”
“Wha-” I sit up, now alert, “You can read my mind?! That’s not fair!”
He scoffs, “What? Wanna read mine?”
I cross my arms on my chest and fall back into my seat, “Well, it should be equal.”
“It is, but you are not ready for that, so I’m not letting you in my mind yet.”
Ding, Ding, he just awoke my challenging side.
“Bull, I’m a grown woman; try me, so-called Alpha-AH!”
Thane slams on the breaks but doesn’t let my head hit the dash. My heart nearly flings into my throat, and as I look over at him, he’s smirking, “Oops,” he says with a tainted smile.
“Son of a-” I take a breath in and decide to play nice. I lean back into my seat and cross my legs.
Thane chuckles, “You done?”
“Don’t push it,” I say through tight lips. Something I got from my mother was her feistiness. She used to call me Miss Bratty when I was younger. My heart suddenly aches, knowing I’d never heard her voice again or my father's. I was quiet on the rest of the drive, thinking of all the little things I missed about my family.
“We're here,” Thane says; I had barely noticed we had driven into what looked like a mansion.
“What the-” I pause, “This is your place?”
“It's the Redwood Pack’s Mansion, and yes, we all live together as one.”
My eyes were glued to the sizeable columned house; there was a fountain with what looked like a Goddess holding up a moon and flowing water coming out of it. Then I see a couple of kids come out of the house.
“Thane’s back, Thane’s back!!” They all cheered; I watched as he happily greeted them. Then, I smiled meekly until one of the children gently pulled on my sweater.
“Hi, my name is Kiara, your pretty. Are you Thane’s mate?” Her big blue eyes look me over, but before I can say anything, an alarm goes off, blaring through the night. Thane’s body goes ridge; he starts to shoo the kids into the house, “Get in the house, go.”
“Thane? What is that? What’s happening?” I ask.
He only says one word, “Rogues.”
As the blare of the horn echoes through the forest, men begin to come out of the house, towards the woods. The females though seemed to stay inside."Thane, what's a Rogue?"His voice holds a hint of sorrow, "They are werewolves who have been banned, they don't play by the rules of the pack, or they get kicked out for harming someone in the pack."These dynamics were starting to make my head hurt. It also made me wonder if my parents knew I was a werewolf and never told me. I had so many questions."Come on," Thane leads me into the Mansion, where I see many more people, especially kids. They ran around like they had nothing to fear when it felt like the ap
“She fell through a hunter's trap? They're not even supposed to be here!” Rosie’s voice was full of panic. “I know, I’ll do something about it; just let me take care of her,” Thane’s voice makes me open my eyes to a room with baby blue walls and a bright ass light. “Ouch, that hurts; turn it off,” I moan, putting my hand in front of my eyes. “Evette,” Thane’s voice was full of relief; he sat on the edge of my bed, “How does your ankle feel? You fell pretty hard.” I look to my ankle under the sheet; as I pull it back, I notice a terrible bruise on my ankle, and when I try to move it, it shoots pain up my leg, “Oh no, nope. I’m not moving.” Thane gi
~Atticus~ "Why did you not kill him! He was right there!" Harvey decided to get too close to me, and I could smell the stench of his breath. "Back off, you reek," It had taken my whole begin not to take Evette with me. However, part of me felt that I deserved it, but I wouldn't let that show with these guys. "Whatever, you missed a chance to kill your bother, and that's a shame. You will never get to see her, you know? Thane is a hard ass. He probably has her locked up in a tower," he chuckles. I leer at him, "You just love rubbing salt in the wound, don't you?" He shrugs, "
"There it is, the last Redwood tree," I say to myself, but beyond here, the forest seemed to get darker. I brave through the last bit of light and slip into the gloomy-looking forest.I didn't even know where to find them, let alone if I was going the right way. Maybe my instincts would tell me? Ugh. Being a Werewolf was confusing as fuck.I had no idea how far I had gone, but suddenly the hairs on the back of my neck stood up; I froze.Someone was watching me.I try to calm myself and keep moving, but the snap of a branch makes me burst into a sprint. I race through the trees; I glance over my shoulder and see a brown wolf, probably one of the rogues.
I remembered little things that felt off when I was a child. But my parents just blew it off as a phase I'd grow out of, and eventually, I did. Although, I always felt like something was missing. Maybe that's why I turned to the career of investigating crimes. I couldn't solve my puzzle, but I could solve others, and it was somewhat of a distraction. "Yet, another thing Thane has failed to tell me." "Get used to that," Atticus says, leaning against a tree, "He's not one to bear all the little details." I leer at Atticus, "And you do?" "I prefer to keep it brutally honest," Atticus says. I had dealt with many people, but Atticus seemed to have a wa
I try my best to stay clear of Thane as I rush back to my room to change out of Atticus' shirt, which I was sure as hell, Thane would be able to smell on me.A shower would be best to get most of his scent off of me. So when I get to my room, I close the door and quickly get into the shower. The last thing I wanted was to be questioned about where I was and what I was doing. I was a grown woman, I'm pretty sure I could do what I wanted, but Thane almost made me feel like I couldn't.It was annoying me.The hot steamy shower was just what I needed, I take a relieved sigh as I get out of the bathroom, but as I enter my room, I halt and almost drop my towel.Thane was sitting on my bed with Atticus' shirt in his clenched fist.Crap. I should have burned it; I cleared my throat, "Thane?""Why the hell are you lying to me?" Thane's voice was heavy with anger. I swallowed but gathered my courage."I went for a walk-""To see At
"Your joking?" "Nope. Bottoms up," I take the first two shots and take the burn with no chaser, "Now, you and I are going to play a game. Have you ever played Truth or Drink?" "No." "We ask each other questions, and you can't just answer with yes or no. You have to spill all or take a stiff drink," I play with my hair. Thane chuckles, "Can I go first?" I look him up and down suspiciously, "Sure, ask me anything." Thane turns to me, then slides a shot over to me, "What did you do with Atticus?" My eyes widened, now I knew why he agreed to play with me; I saw him smirk; I looked at the shot then decided not to take it, "I got chased by Rogues; Atticus jumped in and saved me. I asked him if he had anything to do with my parent's death, he didn't react well. Then a Hunter showed up and tried to kill me; Atticus took the blow-" "He what?" Thane interrupts; he then grabs my arm, "Are you alright?" "Yeah, I'm fine, Atticus got
As I walked up to my room, I ran into Rosie and told her what had just happened. "What?! That thing glowed?" She takes my wrist, examining it, "Whoa, I heard about these things, but I haven't seen one." "Do you have any idea why it did that?" I ask. "Well, I'm not sure but, I heard these things are a part of you so, I guess if it felt your attraction to Thane, it could emulate it," Rosie says, "But don't worry, it's not a bad thing, unless-" Rosie pauses, not finishing her sentence. "Unless, what?" I ask with a raised brow. "Well, I've been thinking, are you planning on rejecting one of them?" She asks. I hold my bracelet to my chest, "That is a big question," I swallow. Honestly, I didn't want to do that to Thane or Atticus. It didn't feel right, "I wasn't planning on it..." "You're going to have a hell of a time going back and forth with them. They aren't exactly on speaking terms," she rubs he arm, then an idea pops in my he
I decided to leave Rosie and Harvey alone. Some part of me felt I could trust him, just by the way he was looking at her. It's funny how mate bonds work, but I had to admit, it was better than regular dating. But now, I had to tell Thane he wouldn't be with me tomorrow, and that made my heart ache. I guess it was just too dangerous for them to be together with me. Not to mention some awkward ass moments would happen. Maybe I could make it up to him.As I walk up to where the circle had been, I see Thane huffing and puffing as the circle disbands. I notice his skin is gleaming with sweat, and I feel my throat suddenly become dry. Was it just me or was he looking more scrumptious than usual? {We could bite into his bicep like a juicy apple.}A voice in my head purrs, "What the-"{I knew you could hear me!} What in the world is going on?! I think to myself.{I'm your she-wolf dumb dumb.}"Who the hell are you calling dum?!" I shout aloud, then clasp my hand around my mouth. Some of the
My body suddenly feels numb, and my mind races. To the man who asked for my address to send girl scout cookies, and I gave him my parent's house address, “Oh no,” my knees give out, and I feel like I can barely breathe as the realization hits me, “I gave him their address…” “Evette?” Atticus kneels beside me,” What's going on?” I felt so blindsided. Patrick had appeared harmless to me, even skittish. But they found his fingerprints in my parent's house, “A late co-worker just told me who killed my parents,” I look at Atticus, “It’s my fault; I gave him the address to my parent's house instead of mine.” My eyes start to burn. I drop the phone, sobbing into my hands. Atticus holds me; they must have been so scared. Soon my sadness and sorrow turn into me seeing red. I wanted him to pay for what he did to my parents. He had no right to take their lives. “Who was this person?” Atticus asks. I wipe my tears. “His name is Patrick.” “I thought I would feel better knowing who did this, bu
I answer it with a shaky hand, but I don't say anything for a second to see if it’s Darleen calling, “Hello?! Evette? Is this you?!” I’d know that voice anywhere, but I wasn’t sure I could trust her yet, “What do you want?” I asked, unsure of her. “Good gracious! What the hell happened to you?! You are all over the place, and you just up and left? I’m not trying to get your location if that’s what you're thinking. So speak up, woman!” She shouts. A moment of silence stretches between us until she speaks up again, “What happened to you?” she asks. I knew she would ask that, and honestly, I didn’t know what to tell her. “Look, all you need to know is that I’m alright.” “Did someone take you? Are you being held against your
~Evette~ My mother used to tell me that a closed mouth never gets fed, and I guess that applies here. I didn’t know what would happen, but if I didn’t tell anyone I was a Hybrid, I would never know if I was truly accepted here. I turn to face Thane, and I realize how vulnerable I feel when he looks at me. Thane seems calm when I feel like a hurricane of anxiety, “I don’t know if you knew already, but I’m-” “A Hybrid?” Thane finishes my sentence, leaving me speechless. I double-blink, then narrow my eyes on him. I cross my arms over my chest, “How did you know?” “When you tied my hand-ups with my belt,” he smiles, “Your eyes glowed, but they weren’t the color of your wo
~Evette~When I'm calm again, my skin turns to normal. I finally decided to go back home. It was unsettling for me not to know anything about being a Succubus. I needed to find out more information because, as far as I knew, weren't these things some demon?"Ugh, why?" I drag my hand down my face. So now, I'm a wanted criminal in my late life, and now a hybrid in my new one. Who heard of a Werewolf-Succubus Hybrid? I also wondered if either Thane or Atticus knew any of this.As I go down the hall, I ask one of the pack members if we have a library, and thankfully, we do. So I race down the hall where he directed me. I'm amazed at how extensive the library is when I walk in. There were so many books. It even had spiral stairs that crawled up to a second floor. But, Lord, where do I start?
~Evette~ "Get off me!" Moraya shouts as I pinned her down, "Who do you think you are?!" She shouts. "From what everyone else tells me, I'm the next, Luna. Now, tell me why you came here trying to drag Harvey away with you?" "It's none of your business! Let me go!" Moraya struggles under my grip; you'd think she'd be stronger than this, wasn't she once a Luna too? I notice her trim nails and perfectly unflawed skin as I look her over. This woman hasn't known work her whole life. "Why are you protecting a Rogue anyway?" She asks. "Because, unlike other packs, we see their potential." Moraya narrows her eyes on me; then her eyes go to my bracelte. She then smiles, "Oh, how funny. So you're from the Astra pack? No wonder you are recruiting Rogues. Are you looking for more suitors, succubus?" She teases, but I'm taken back by her comment. I squeeze her wrists, "What the hell are you talking about?" She starts to laugh,
~Harvey~ "I knew I didn't like the smell of you, you skeamy bitch!" She shouts, Rosie starts whaling on her. Moraya puts her arms up to defend herself. "Stop it!" Moraya yells "I'll rip your throat out!" Rosie growls, and her eyes shift. Moraya finds her chance to get up and Rosie jumps on her back like a spider-monkey. All the while, Evette is just watching her, I look towards her, stunned that she wasn't intervening. She shrugs, "I tried holding her back. But she heard what Moraya said to you. My little Rosebud lost her shit." I look back to Rosie, who compared to Moraya was much more petite. Yet she was fighting ferociously. Moraya, finally makes her way out of
"It's been two days and Harvey hasn't said a word," Rosie chews her lip, " He really thinks he doesn't need anyone. It's ridiculous." "Yeah, I know. He's bullheaded," These past two days Atticus has been trying to change Harvey's mind, but it was looking like a no-go. Harvey just wouldn't budge despite his situation. What was it going to take to make him see reason? I wrap my arm around Rosie's shoulder as we round the corner of the house. She wanted to be in the backyard, in case Harvey had an epiphany. Suddenly Rosie halts, "Who is that?" she points, I follow her gesture to a female coming towards us in a royal blue robe. "She isn't part of the pack?" I asked. "No. She seems to be from another one," Rosie says. The female stops before us, "Hello," she dips her head slightly. "I'm sorry to disturb you, " she removes her hood, revealing her porcelain-like face, complimented by ink-black hair. "My name is Moraya. I'm from Harvey's late-pack."
Rosie dashes away from me into the backyard despite my intoxicated mind, but I'm quick to follow. "Hey! Wait up!" I finally catch up to her and grab her shoulder, turning her around to look at me. "What happened?" Her eyes glisten, "I was trying to help him, and he-" she bites her lip, "He grabbed my boob..." She wraps her arms around herself, "So, I scratched him across the chest." What is the actual fuck!? I shake my head, wondering if this was real or not. "Are you serious? That asshole!" I sidestep her and head to the studio, "He should know better!" I kick open the door. Harvey lays on the couch, now on his back. &nbs
