★ELAINE'S POV★
Bile was starting to rise in my throat. I swallowed hard, not knowing how to divulge to them that– my wolf hasn't emerged, yet. Lowering my gaze to my sweaty hands underneath the table, I thought of articulating a lie. But what if the elders ask me to show them? Alas, that would be more humiliating and precarious. So I shoved the thought away from the forefront of my brain, and then I decided to embrace the truth.
Okay, here goes nothing.
Just as I was about to open my mouth to speak, one of the elders chimed. “Zeta Harold, that question isn't necessary. Even if she has a wolf, it should be the last thing on our mind, because we need a Luna that is willing and accommodating enough to wipe away Alpha Damon's sorrow. We need someone that would bear his pups and make our pack lively. It seems Lady Elaine can do it, so why don't we cut to the chase?”
I heaved a sigh of relief, feeling glad that I didn't have to answer that tough question. The moment they realize I'm wolfless, I am pretty sure they'd discard me the next minute. So where would I go from here? My pack? Back to my father? Never!
“You have spoken well.” A green-eyed elder spoke from the rest. “But that is only if Alpha Damon tries to behave well towards his Luna. We all saw the way he spoke to her earlier, if this persists, the Luna would start to avoid him, and it won't be good for the future of our pack.” He fretted. His tone was frail and feeble.
The moment he said that; Alpha Damon and I locked gaze for a split second. “Well, I don't care about that, Zeta Joe, because Elaine doesn't exist to me. So I urge you all to teach her how to stop prying in my business, because the next time she does, she will be as good as dead.” his note of warning was as clear as day!
And it made my blood curdle. Fear, panic, and uncertainty coursed through my veins, so I looked away from him, trying to conceal the tears that brimmed my eyelashes, as soon as I remembered the way he almost strangulated me to death earlier.
The atmosphere turned sour until another elder spoke up.
“So everyone, I have decided that since tomorrow is the coronation of our Luna, we might as well celebrate my daughter, Cynthia, and Delta Donovan's union. I am sure Delta Donovan is thrilled and he can't wait to be with my daughter." The elder seated directly in front of me proclaimed with his head held high.
Almost at once, Beta Adrian and I looked at each other. A faint smile tugged the corners of his lips in regards to what the Elder blurted and I knew why he was smiling, So I lost control and burst into a series of raucous laughter.
Everyone's heads snapped in my direction. And the Elder narrowed his gaze at me. “Pardon me, Luna. Did I say something funny?”
My laughter faltered. Quickly, the amusement in my face vanished into thin air, only to be soon replaced with a frown. I gulped down hard, unsure of how to respond to his question.
His piercing gaze demanded an answer I wasn't ready to give. What was I supposed to say? I think you must be mistaken– Delta Donovan isn't thrilled to be with your daughter one bit, in fact, he is seeing the Alpha's maid in secret. No no no, I can't be the one to leak that out. It wasn't in my place. Trying to couple up a plausible response to give, I opened my mouth to speak.
But Beta Adrian beat me to it. “I think she is just excited about the coronation tomorrow. Since Alpha Damon said her mate rejected her, then she must be thrilled to become a Luna to another powerful Alpha such as Damon.” He waived the pending question and everyone conceded with a nod.
Although I didn't like his approach, I was still grateful to him for boycotting the situation to save me from what could have turned out to be an awkward, embarrassing situation.
“But are you certain that you want to become Alpha Damon's Luna?” Another Elder directed the question at me.
Silence fell upon us like a blanket. To be honest, I didn't know the answer to that. If you ask me, I'd say I wasn't ready to become the Luna to someone as cruel, demeaning, and brutal as Alpha Damon. But do I really have a choice?
My heart thumped rapidly against my chest as I fiddled with my fingers. So I drifted my gaze to Beta Adrian, and everything he advised me on earlier surged to the forefront of my brain— no one has the right to alter your mood, except you. So I brought my gaze back to the Elder and mumbled. “Yes.”
“Like she has a choice.” Alpha Damon sneered, before shoving a morsel of bacon into his mouth. My eyes shot up to his stupid face, but alas, I was surprised to find myself smiling, instead of getting pissed at his silly remark.
“It is not like you have a choice either, Alpha.” I retorted sharply in the most sarcastic tone. And his face contorted into a dead gripping scowl as he glared at me with fury. Instantly, I shuddered with terror as I picked up my cutlery and began to eat too.
Taking that as a cue to quit the incessant chattering, the elders picked their cutleries and joined in the buffet. We ate in silence, except for the clanking of spoons against the ceramic plates. And of course, those who chewed their food, loudly and hurriedly, as if it was about to vanish into thin air, the next minute.
By the time we were done with our meals, Alpha Damon rose to his feet. “The coronation is tomorrow. Please endeavor to make sure the arrangement is scheduled earlier. I want to do this shit and get it over with!” he tossed me one last glare before strutting off. While everyone at the table bowed in deference at his retreating figure.
Meanwhile, I tossed him a middle finger, hopefully, no one saw me. We just met today and the Alpha effortlessly gets on my nerves without even trying too much. I knew it isn't going to be an easy journey, nonetheless, I was ready to brace myself and persist through all odds.
One by one, the elders dispersed to their various abodes, some paid obeisance to me, while some just issued me a curt nod before ambling away. However, that was the least of my worries.
I jolted to my feet and made my way to my room. I could not wait to speak with Tania. I needed to confide in her as always, I want to hear her urge me to go ahead with the coronation, tomorrow. So while walking to my room, alone, various thoughts raced through my mind.
What would tomorrow be like? Did I make the right decision by agreeing to become Alpha Damon's Luna?
These questions taunted me over and over again, prompting an exasperated sigh to escape my lips.
Quit worrying, Elaine! My instincts scolded me. You know fully well that's better for you to stay here.
To be honest, it's more acceptable to become unhappy as a Luna, yet, people would serve and respect me, than, to return to my pack, where I'd face more hell. Becoming a rogue wasn't even an option any longer. As a she-wolf, I'd be vulnerable to a lot of dangers lurking out there. No one would come to my rescue. Nevertheless, if I was going to make such a hasty decision, I had to consider Tania, because I won't want anything bad to happen to her.
Brace yourself, woman! Breathe in, out, in, out, in. I schooled myself.
However, tomorrow is going to be a long day, but it's already a done decision.
But then my thoughts dissipated the moment I heard proceeding footsteps, emanating from behind me. The long hallway was quite dark and my heart began to thump rapidly against my chest. I could not stop thinking about the male wolf, Alpha Damon murdered in cold blood earlier today. Still, was there such a thing as ghosts?
Could he be enraged because I didn't make an effort to save him? In truth, I have been guilt-tripped since I saw that gory sight behind that closed door. A wave of fear coursed through my entire body as I hasten my pace. I could feel the veins at the base of my neck and the back of my hands, pulsating out of anxiety. Suddenly, someone grasped my hand.
With a loud yelp escaping my lips, I jumped startled. “Let me go!”
But the person turned out to be Beta Adrian. Instantly, a wave of relief calmed my tumultuous nerves. My breathing reduced to a normal pace.
“I am sorry for creeping on you like this." Beta Adrian apologized with a warm smile. His handsome face lit up through the darkness and somehow, my stomach fluttered. He stretched out his hand forward to reveal my hairclip. “I found this on the floor and I wanted to return it to you.”
“Oh,” I returned the smile. “Thank you.” before attempting to pick it up, he fixed it on my hair, himself. His warm gesture brought up something that strengthened my resolve and I found myself grinning from ear to ear.
His eyes flickered brightly as they held mine. “Goodness, you are so beautiful. Any man should be lucky to have you.”
★ELAINE'S POV★ “Rise and shine!” My eyes flung open and I stretched out my hands while letting out a yawn. Today is my coronation, but I didn't know how to feel about it. A wave of mixed feelings swept through me. Anxiety, panic, and mostly uncertainty overwhelmed my guts. “Rise and shine!” Tania reiterated, pulling the curtains to my room apart, so a ray of sunlight could illuminate the entire room. “It is time to oppress your oppressors!” What? I let out a brief chortle. “What does that even mean, Tania?” With a charming smile plastered across her beautiful face, she plopped on the mattress beside me. “Last night, when you attended the inaugural ceremony with the Elders and the Alpha, I thought of something.” “Oh really?” I readjusted myself to a sitting position with curiosity piquing my interest. “And what is that?” Tania's neon blue eyes held mine. “It's about our escape plan, my lady. I feel we shouldn't escape for now, because if we do, we will still end up being
★ALPHA DAMON★ The she-wolf's unexpected proclamation made me clench my fist around the arm of the chair I was seated on. What? Cynthia? How? When? Why? Without thinking twice, I jolted to my feet, my pulse quickening. Why does this have to happen today? When will I finally have that peace of mind I yearn for so much? That tranquility! “Guards! Seize Donovan and bring him along with me!” I commanded out of fury, then I urged the she-wolf to lead the way, as I stormed out of the hall, that had already been thrown in an uproar. People were whispering, wondering, and perhaps, confused just like I am. On my way to the Brescia's apartment, I was really hoping Cynthia could still be alive. Plus, I am furious that this occurred today just when I wanted to get the coronation done, so I could get away from all of the ruckus, but it seems, I can't. Who was I kidding? Have I ever had a moment of peace and happiness since I became an Alpha? It has been seven years! Seven freaking years o
★ELAINE'S POV★I rushed between Alpha Damon and Ashley, and his sharp claws scratched my upper arm skin in the process. A loud agonizing cry escaped my lips as I lost my balance and fell to the ground.Everyone in the room gasped in terror. My arm was now scarred, bleeding profusely as blood trickled down to the floor. I was in pain. But I didn't care. Instead, I picked myself up to face Alpha Damon with tears forming a pool in my eyes because of the burning pain. Although I don't have any connection with Ashley, I likened her to my maid, Tania. Because if Tania was in this situation at the moment, I would fight until my last breath to make sure the hair on her head isn't hurt. What happened wasn't Ashley's fault. Delta Donovan was the one looking for her, and if Ashley hasn't gotten a mate just like Tania, does that mean she should be killed because she finally found someone who loves her? Does that mean she should be punished even if the person isn't her mate?As for me, I feel As
★BETA ADRIAN'S POV★“The Alpha is waiting for you inside, Beta." the omega bowed in deference as he step aside for me to enter the tavern. Once inside, there was no sight of people except Alpha Damon and the bartender. The whole atmosphere reeked of alcohol, the stench of vomit, and pungent body odors. Thank goodness, he chased everyone out because I don't think I could have been able to withstand their disgusting sights and foul smell. Alpha Damon sat at the counter, gulping down a large quantity of beer from his special goblet. Heaving a deep sigh, I strolled across the room and pulled out a wooden stool beside him, then I plopped on it. “What is my punishment?" Was the first question that came out of my mouth to him. Since we weren't on good terms at the moment, I felt we might as well skip pleasantries and get down to business. He took another gulp from his goblet, before casting a sideways glance. “What punishment?” “For disrespecting you," I replied shortly. “Because I know
★ELAINE'S POV★After Beta Adrian left with the omega, I scuffed back to the fortress, straight to my room, absentmindedly waving at the people that bowed to pay respect to me on the way. I pressed down on the doorknob to my room, and it creaked open to reveal Tania twirling around with a wide grin splayed across her beautiful face. On noticing my presence, she hurriedly walked over to me, then curtsied. “It is an honor to be blessed with your presence, the most beautiful and graceful Luna.” Considering the norm, her action was meant to bring a smile to my face, but this time, it didn't. I heaved a sigh and headed straight to the four-poster bed, which seemingly brings me comfort. But before I could even think of sitting down, Tania closed the door and dashed to my side with a worried expression on her face. Her curious eyes scanned my face. “What is wrong, my lady?” With an exasperated sigh, I plopped on the bed and so did Tania. “I forgot to tell you what happened last night,”
★ELAINE'S POV★For a split second, Ashley squinted her eyes at me, then she took in a deep breath before saying; “Well if one is in love, you will feel as if you can't do without that person. Sometimes, you find yourself doing things you never knew you could do for them. Your thoughts are filled with them every single second.” She managed a small smile then add, “And if for instance, you are going through a rough day, merely thinking about them can brighten you up.”I expelled a sharp breath of air. “Alright then, thank you.” Then Tania walked over to me and nudged my right shoulder. “Why did you ask that question, my lady? Are you already falling for the Alpha?” She teased, raising her brows at me. But instead of smiling at her remark, I issued her a dead-gripping scowl and she immediately began to apologize. “I am so sorry, my lady. I am so sorry, please pardon me.” “You better be.” I breathed before returning my attention to Ashley. “Well, you can leave now and get some rest. Al
★ELAINE'S POV★My heart skipped a beat. Oh my goodness, Tania!Without waiting to hear anything else from Ashley, I took to my heels and sprinted out of my chambers; through the hallway, while Ashley ran right behind me. Although my head was pounding from the throbbing pain and it was sort of blurring my vision, I didn't mind. Tania is the most important person in my tumultuous mind right now. And nothing must happen to her! Not even a strand of her hair should be touched!Darting through the hallway, out to the main corridor, I bumped into someone and almost fell to the ground. A loud yelp escaped my lips as the strong pair of hands held my waist to stop me from falling. But I didn't even wait to see who it was, before pulling out of his grip to run out of the fortress. Hot tears poured down my cheeks as I raced down the flight of stairs as if my life depended on it. And to be honest, it did. Tania has been my pillar of solace for as long as I could remember. We grew up together. W
★ELAINE'S POV★Several thoughts raced through my mind as I sprinted toward Beta Adrian. Is she dead? What's wrong with her? With each dreaded step taken toward the Beta, my heart was thumping rapidly against my chest. At this rate, it might as well jump right out. My breathing shuddered and the sole of my feet was hurting from the prick of sand, yet, I didn't mind. “Moon Goddess, just this once. Please save Tania for me.” Tears rolled down my cheeks as I continued to make my way toward Beta Adrian. “I will no longer blame you for everything if Tania survives this." By the time I got closer to Beta Adrian, I froze. The relief, the happiness, the excitement, and the profound gratitude that coursed through my veins were enough to get me tearing up again. Alas, Tania was still alive, but she had bruises on her knee and arms. I guess that was why Beta Adrian had to carry her. Beta Adrian slowly let her stand on her feet, and I wasted no time wrapping my arms around her small body fram
