In the distance I could hear hushed voices, slowly I opened my eyes. The familiar hospital room greeted me. I sighed, refusing to cry or feel sorry for myself anymore. What happened happened and there is nothing I can do about it now. Trying to prop myself up a little is hard with my arms still strapped down. As I readjust, I see my doll is now in the bed with me near my head. I turn my nose towards it and inhale it deeply. The smells of apples and cinnamon calm me. There is another scent here now though. I frown, confused, as my mom’s scent is also on it. She always frowned when I asked for it at bedtime, saying that I should fight my own battles and not rely on dolls and dreams to save me.
I freeze as I hear my mom talking now in the hallway, is she here to force me to start training again?! I relax slightly when I hear my dad there as well. They are fighting again, about me. The usual.
