Miaka’s P.O.V
I came out of the shadows provided by the alleyway, but I didn’t let down the cloak of darkness that surrounded me. To the naked eye I’d look like a shadow amongst shadows, a blind spot. The darkness was my friend, but I’ve yet to perfect this technique. It drains energy if used for too long, not a lot, but it could be my downfall if a battle went on for longer than anticipated. But tonight would be a short fight; my quarry was at a direct line of sight.
They were carrying a huge sack with them. If it weren’t for all the blood that soaked the sack deep red and scented the air with its pungency, anyone could mistake it for a stack of potatoes, misshaped and lifeless. But it wasn’t. It had someone in it...someone immortal.
My men have been tracking these people for days now and we finally had a lead on them. This wasn’t the main base, not by a long shot, but this is where it’ll begin. These were people who captured immortals and experimented on them, a sick bunch of lousy mortals! Humans!
I couldn’t hate them more than I did now. Those filthy people hurt and killed those under my protection just for the fun of it. They were trying to discover a way to get rid of us, to rid the world of our ‘infection’. Fools didn’t know that there were so many living among them that if a war broke out, the entire human population could be wiped out. The Dark Council were still debating about the possibility, and I, as the head of the Council, was trying to avoid a mass cleansing at all rates. The innocent ones didn’t need to be punished for the foolishness of some of their kind. And I’ve seen enough good to know that they existed.
They were clever, this lot. I have to agree with that. What better way to hide their transgressions than it plain sight. On the surface, the factory was a meat possessing farm and a cold storage unit, but inside it acted as a laboratory and storage facility for younger or weaker immortals that had been easy prey. But my men had been noticing suspicious activity here lately and it didn’t take much time for them to figure out exactly what was wrong.
The human’s didn’t notice me as I followed them. Unlike us, they had to rest at night, but although they had a rotation of guard to watch over their subjects, they were still wary at night. Attacking at dawn would be the appropriate time as there is a breach in their security when the morning guards replace the night guards. I followed them soundlessly, my boots didn’t make a single noise as I walked down the pebbled street, but I could still hear them following behind me silently, waiting for my command. My faithful pets, a gift from my dad.
Not everyone could see these creatures, not until they were about to die within the next few moments. I’d started noticing them ever since I was little. They liked to follow me around. Sometimes they disappeared but they were always nearby whenever I needed them.
The men entered the factory with the bloodied sack and I followed behind them before the doors were closed, ordering only some of my pets to come with me while the others waited outside in case we have an escapee. What I saw inside made my stomach twist and lungs burn in need of air.
Cages; rows of them were lined in all sides of the huge space. And they lay in the open as if they knew no one will find them. The most horrifying of all was that they were all chained to the wall and the stench of chloroform was so high in the air, that it burned my lungs. That was when I noticed that the immortals were not just inhaling them, but it was running through their bloodstream in huge amounts, which was the only way chloroform worked on immortals, or the weakest of our race. Even pets weren’t chained with such cruelty. Collars with metal spikes that pierced the delicate skin of their neck, hands and legs shackled with similar spikes, blood pouring out freely from open wounds and some wounds were even infected as the stench of blood and rot lay heavy in the air. There were mostly females, all naked and helpless and the males were in no better condition. The presence of older wounds showed signs of further torture, even rape.
The thought enraged me so much that a harsh growl left my mouth, alerting everyone at once. Instantly the place came to buzzing motion. The human guards stood alert and gathered around in the centre of the huge warehouse, guns in their hand, which, I was quite certain, didn’t contain normal bullets. All the lights were turned on, taking the veil of darkness away from me. But it didn’t matter; no one will be left alive to report how I looked, back to their HQ. They’ve had their fun, now it was my turn.
I strode towards the middle of the room and stopped just in front of the armed guards, letting them surround me, making them believe they had me. I could see the hunger in their eyes as soon as they saw my face; I let them see the beauty before I unleashed the horror. They were carrying guns with silver bullets as well as iron and other poisonous metals, the combined scents making it difficult for me to identify them all. It was a shame that they didn’t know that nothing would work on me. My pets, the hell hounds, were invisible to human eyes because they were their worst nightmare personified and it gave me the upper hand. They were restless, already growling silently with the skin of their muzzle pulled back over their sharp glistening teeth. The immortals, those who were awake sat in their cages, mouth agape and fear and relief evident in their eyes, while the other slumped in their unconsciousness. Even the humans were getting scared from the power I was emitting.
“Who are you? State your purpose,” one of the humans asked in a brave voice, but his insides were anything but. His fear coated the air heavily with its stench.
“My name is Miaka. Any you lovely people...are about to die” I smirked, letting my words sink in.
The entrance door to the factory was shredded to pieces an instant later as the hounds came running in. It was a good thing that only very few things had the power to kill them and they were the rarest creatures in all of the dimensions. I watched them ripping every human in the house to shreds. The humans didn’t even know what were attacking them as they died a merciless death, some tried to fire their guns but to no avail, they ended up firing at their comrades instead.
A movement at a far corner caught my eyes and I turned to see a man in a white lab coat trying to run away without being noticed. A hound followed my gaze and ran after him.
“Let him live. He’ll come in handy,” I ordered the hound as it pinned the man to the ground and was getting ready to rip his head off. He stopped and sniffed the man, then pulled back its muzzle and growled ferociously in his face, leaving him unconscious with fear. Within minutes everyone in the house was dead, except for the immortals in their cages. But everyone was now awake and afraid, unsure if I was a friend or a foe. I was neither.
I took my phone out of my jeans pocket and called Rain, my knight. She picked up on the second ring.
“Rescue trucks are ready, awaiting command, Your Highness” Rain said at once.
“Bring them forward” I ordered.
Of course I hadn’t come alone. I knew what went on around here so I had brought backup with me so that the immortal prisoners could be transferred and given first aid on their way to the recovery facilities.
The truck arrived within a few minutes, since I had ordered Rain and a few of my trusted guards to stay near the highway, in case someone from the human team got out alive but the situation was under control. The prisoners were freed and my men began to shift them into the truck, wrapping them in warm blankets and providing water if needed. They would be taken to a healing facility immediately where they’d be looked after and treated until they were healthy and ready to head back to their old lives.
I looked around at the mess my pets have created and decided to burn down the factory once all the prisoners were set free. The scientist would be taken to the dungeons and questioned till he answers and I doubt the factory owner would make any complaints. As far as our research went, the man had no clue as to what was going on in his factory...well either that or he was getting his pockets heavy by these goons.
Well, too bad. This experiment was about to end soon. Because once I set my mind on something, I was not letting go until I had reached the bottom of things. And these human researchers were going to learn the hard way exactly what they have messed with.
Miaka’s P.O.VI was looking around the central base for evidences when Rain, the commander of my elite guard, came to stand beside me.“Your Highness, all immortals are secured and the scientist has been contained .Our team has also gathered all evidences of DNA they could find in and out of the warehouse base.” Rain bowed her head in a curtsy. “The trucks just left for the rehabilitation centre. We await your orders.”“Thank you Rain, I’ll just do a last check and then I’ll burn this place down,” I said as I looked at the deserted warehouse. Who could have thought that such heinous deeds were being committed inside this innocent looking building?“Shall I escort you?” She asked.“No. Go wait in the car outside, I’ll be right there.” I told her and headed towards a door at the back of the factory. The cold storage has to be somewhere in
Miaka’s P.O.V“He’s alive.”I’d nearly forgotten that he was beside me when his voice cut through the rush of blood in my ears. I couldn’t fathom what I was seeing in front of my eyes. A lump formed in my throat and I was having difficulty breathing past that.A boy of about four or five years old was inside the room, chained to the wall like a dog. He was left naked just like the rest of the captives, face sunken in and dark bags under his eyes. His lips had dried blood around them, which led me to believe that he was a vampire. Several tubes were linked to his skin which had turned a sickly ash colour. Some of the tubes drew out blood from his body that was being collected into several jars, while the remaining tubes carried some kind of clear liquid into his body. I have no idea what the liquid was, but it was the cause for worsening his condition.“Hey!” Someone shook my shoulders hard a
Miaka’s P.O.V“Hydrogen Cyanide.” The healer informed me when I went to check up on the boy. “A very diluted amount but lethal at such a young age. If you hadn’t gotten to him on time, he would have died within an hour at most.”I sighed, rubbing my hands down my face. “How long will he take to recover?”“His body has shut down, making him go into a temporary coma so he can regain his strength. He should be better in a week or even less, but I have something to show you.” Katherine Sanders, the prime healer mage and my best friend, took me to the room where the boy was being treated and it struck me anew how cruel the humans had been to a child. We came to a stand in front of the boy and Kathy lifted up one of his arms and turned it towards the light.Tiny fang marks dotted his wrist, as if someone had tried to drink his blood. “He’s a vampire. Who could have drunk fr
Miaka’s P.O.VI was crowned when I was two years old. Not because I was the intended King, but because my adoptive family had to protect me.They knew I was a hybrid. And hybrids were the enemy.Eons ago, there used to be just one world, one dimension. Different creatures lived together in harmony. It’s not that there weren’t wars, there were, but that was considered the natural order of things. Wars over territory kept the population of the supernatural in check; making sure that no one species ever dominated the world. But that all changed when the species started inter-mating and hybrids were created. Some of those hybrids were unstable, unable to control their powers, and as a result, thousands of creatures were killed, both humans and supernatural. That’s when the five most powerful Mages of the world, the Fiostros, untied to form dimensions for the individual creatures and divided our world forever, thus savi
Miaka’s P.O.VI stepped on the first staircase that led down the hall where the party was being held. My grapy stood beside me proudly, followed by my uncles Geraldine and Kameron. Nervously, I looked down at the awaiting crowd.“He’s not here yet.” Grapy squeezed my hand reassuringly. But I knew he would be here soon and he was going to make quiet an entrance.Smiling despite my anxiety, I nodded at grapy and we began descending the stairs to the sound of cheers and surprised gasps. My brother, Lyric Von Crusader, the King of the shifter dimension, was the first to greet me as he pulled me in for a bear hug.“Damn! I can’t believe you only just turned eighteen!” He pinched my cheeks lovingly. “It seemed like you had aged way before your time.”“Maybe I had, you never know.” I winked at him before being passed onto my next brother, Lancelin, the Incubus King and his
Miaka’s P.O.V“I agree.”I watched as satisfaction dawned in his eyes and everyone else looked at me in horror. Rihero was confident he had won, that he had me exactly where he wanted me and he did…except, I wasn’t going down without a fight. This time when I spoke, I looked him in the eye, noticing every tiny detail. “I agree to marry into your Kingdom. But I will not be marrying you, Rihero, because you’re so old you’re practically an ancient and that would just be paedophilic. Instead, I will agree to marry your son, Jayden. He is the heir apparent and your successor, not to mention he’s only two hundred years old, so it’s an acceptable age range. Don’t you think so?”With every word I spoke, Rihero’s eyes changed colour, becoming darker and darker until they were completely obsidian. He tried to keep his face expressionless, but he was failing, I could tell
Miaka’s P.O.VI stopped my car a few meters away from the warehouse, in case someone was watching. There was only one heartbeat that I could sense in this entire area but there could be cameras or other devices that could pick out my car and I didn’t want to destroy the electronics right away and give anyone reasons to suspect. Kaleb had especially“Kaleb? Are you there?” I looked around the abandoned warehouse but found only dust and broken boxes. But when I strained my ears, the faint sound of a heartbeat could still be heard from nearby. “Ka-”Suddenly I was being pulled aside by my and down a flight of stairs through an open trapdoor. Bright lights were being turned on the next instant, blinding me temporarily before the somewhat familiar face with the unique eyes came into view.“Was that really necessary?” I asked with a frown while dusting off my jacket.“They’re in
Miaka’s P.O.V “Help? That’s what you want?” I asked him incredulously. “You’re working with people who capture innocent immortals and torture them to get a kick out of it; who hurt people when they are down to feel empowered! And you are saying that you are one of them…to get my help?” “I never had a choice!” He raised his voice only the slightest before lowering his head and clenching his hands into fists by his side. He took a couple of deep breaths, trying to control his anger and then, he took off his glassed once again as he looked into my eyes. “I never had a choice.” “Everyone has a choice.” I told him. “Do you?” He fired back, catching me off guard. “Do you have a choice in being the King? Of ruling over the council? Can you take off your disguise right here, right now, and announce your identity without fear of being swarmed by everyone at the park?” He was right…I didn’t have a choice. But I was different…and maybe,
Miaka’s P.O.V“W-what?” I hated that my voice broke, but my mind wasn’t in the right place at the moment.“Hades and Suzaku might both be Gods, but they are polar opposites of each other.” Kaleb explained. “Hades is the God of demons and Suzaku the Beast God of fire. So if you were made from their essence…that should make you half-demon…half-angel.”“That’s nonsense!” I said defensively. “I’m a full demon.”“Are you, Miaka?” Kaleb came to kneel on the floor in front of me, while I sat frozen in place.“You thought I would use it against you?” He looked up into my eyes, entrapping me with those gorgeous eyes of his. “I’m not your enemy.”“Every single person I know is a potential enemy, Kaleb.” I told him the truth I was to live with for the rest of my life. “I will neve
Miaka’s P.O.VBlack fire.It looked like liquid, black waves and yet there was nothing liquid about it. The heat from the fire was enough to scald my skin even though the fire was nowhere near my body.It was strange. This wasn’t supposed to happen. I control fire. I could produce fire out of thin air, change one element to another. That was why I had an immunity towards any kind of fire…that and because I was the daughter of the fire God. Then what was this black fire? Why was it scalding me? Why couldn’t I defend myself against it?I didn’t know where I was, but all I knew was that I was surrounded by darkness. The black fire would’ve been impossible to predict if it weren’t for the heat…and the slight tint of white on the outer layer of the fire. Where was I? How did I get here? This place was very similar to the mental vaults I create, but this was very unfamiliar at the same time. Was
Miaka’s P.O.V“How long before I stop healing instantly?”I didn’t understand the question until I smelled dried blood from all over him. The scent was familiar and it made my heart race in not a good way.“How did you get hurt?” I slammed my car door shut and rushed over to him.“I got called in to HQ today, by two of the heads.” Kaleb removed his jacket to show me the still wet patch on his lower abdomen. “I got off easy, but I think one of the other guards suspects something. He stabbed me before he left.”“You got stabbed and yet you let the other guy go?” I asked him incredulously. “Why?”“How did you know if I let him go?” Kaleb frowned, his features in partial darkness from the overhead lights outside his apartment.“Because your blood is the only scent I’m getting.” What I didn’t add was how
Miaka’s P.O.VI tossed and turned in bed, unable to fall asleep.I was exhausted after everything that happened today, not to mention that even trying to think about anything hurt. Then why couldn’t I rest for a bloody night?Although I would’ve assumed that the only thing on my mind today would’ve been Rihero and his ridiculous demand…but what I couldn’t get out of my head was Kaleb and the kiss we shared. The instant his lips had touched mine…everything just…changed.I brought my hand to my lips, touching them lightly. They felt sensitive to touch and every instant reminded me of his lips. So, so soft and pink and they had fit perfectly against mine…How can a person with so many hard angles have such soft lips? Or was it just me overthinking everything?I wanted to call him, to tell him I…I what? That I wanted more? I wanted to kiss him
Kaleb’s P.O.V The call came at six in the evening, just as I had stepped into my prison house on Princep Street. “Your presence is requested at the Headquarters by 9PM.” It was a curt phone call, no details and no explanations, but I had a bad feeling about it. I had been violating too many protocols and it was only a matter of time before I was ‘taken care of’, like so many others before me. Working for the League might seem appealing at first, but it became a clash of morals right after you witness the blood and the gore. A sudden pain in my arm had me doubling over on the floor. It was a second of excruciation before it numbed to a dull throb. This had never happened before. The pain always lasted longer, but I had a suspicion it had something to do with the Demon King’s blood in my veins. I made my way over to the couch in the living area and crashed onto it, feeling exhausted and numb all over. Once I had my breath under
Miaka’s P.O.V“Oh no.” Kathy looked up from her microscope and cringed. “Do not blame me for this! You know exactly how scary Rain can be!”“I know.” I locked the door behind me before checking down the empty hallway. “I figured if I was to have a mental breakdown, this would be the ideal place.”“Miaka?”Kathy got up from her chair just as my legs gave out from under me and I fell to the floor, feeling my vision go blank for a second. But then, Kathy was in front of me, holding me up from falling face first onto the floor.“Hey…hang in there!” She wrapped her arm around me tightly in a hug and somehow I managed to do the same.Five minutes later, Kathy and I were both lying on her office bedroom, a small extra room attached to her workspace since she was always cooped up in here. Even though she’s a mage, she has always been more intr
Miaka’s P.O.VThe ‘card’ was an old fashioned scroll made of pure gold and the writings were burned onto it, making it look even more ominous. The time for running has passed.“I need to speak to Rihero.” I told Grapy as she twiddled with one of her rings nervously.“No!” She stood up from her chair instantly. “You will not go near that bastard! God knows what his intentions are.”“I think his intensions are very clear.” I threw the scroll onto the floor, gritting my teeth in frustration.Rihero wasn’t thinking straight and he was driving me just as crazy. I need to sort this before he did something stupid.Getting up from my chair opposite Grapy and Rain, I rushed out of the parlour and headed straight for my room, ignoring the calls from my grandmother and my Knight. I had been sitting around for way too long.Shutting my door, I went and sat on
Miaka’s P.O.V“Kaleb!” I caught him before he could fall to the floor and laid him down carefully, before turning to Rain. “What do you think you’re doing? How dare you act without my permission?”Rain sat frozen against the opposite wall, looking at me flabbergasted. “Your Highness…I thought-”“I don’t care what you thought.” I snapped at her. “You do not act without my orders and you especially do not go around hurting human civilians!”Just as I expected of Rain’s aim, Kaleb’s throat was slit from corner to corner and if I didn’t act fast, he’d be dead. He was trying to stem the blood flow by pressing a hand to his throat, but it wasn’t helping much. So I did the only thing I could think of, I cut my finger at the corner of my fangs and prying his lips open, poured a few drops of blood into his mouth. The reaction w
Miaka’s P.O.VI looked around the apartment as Kaleb went to the kitchen to get that coffee. Apparently he didn’t drink alcohol, so he said he needed coffee to listen to the rest of my theory. It wasn’t a big place, but since I was used to living at the palace, I pretty much considered everything else small. The kitchen was right opposite to the sitting area and had a counter with two chairs in front of it serving as the dining area. The living room had two couches and a small wooden centre table. The pictures of Kaleb, his sister and his parents were on the wall behind me. To my left were two doors that I assumed were the bedrooms, with possibly en-suit bathrooms. And that was pretty much everything in the house. For a secret lair, this seemed normal and the touches of portrait, a couple dried out plants on the kitchen window…they gave it a sense of home. A home that wasn’t frequented as often anymore, sinc
