I had to sniffle and didn't let Xavier out of my tight hug. The proposal had been incredibly beautiful. The hug was necessary and he returned it. Just not quite as tight as I did. That's probably because I wouldn't survive if he squeezed hard.

After clearing my throat, I said, "Thank you." I couldn't get more from my lips. I had to postpone that until later.

"What are you thanking me for? I have to thank you for being insane enough to want to marry a man like me." A light laugh came from me, which is why a tear dared down my cheek.

We hugged for a while before we finally broke apart. I looked up at Xavier and asked, "Did you realize we've already completed the mate tape? You should have known I said yes."

"No, you could have said no. You never know what the answer will be. Marriage is a celebration of love. You could have thought I didn't deserve it. The thought would be valid. I have didn't always treat you well."

He had far too much self-doubt. But I could follow his logic.
