Athena's POV

The table setup was truly romantic. The roasted chicken is in the center, with both the vegetable salad and baked potatoes on the side. I reached into the minibar for a bottle of Crimson Chardonnay and strategically placed it on the table. This was my favorite wine for many years, and I hand-picked them when I went to France on a business trip paid for by the company I work for as an author. I am not a typical heavy drinker, but I believed I would need something to settle my nerves when the world is spinning out of control.

I smiled as I inspected the table with satisfaction. Then I glanced at the wall clock and realized I still had 20 minutes till Cloud arrived up for our dinner. After a difficult and grueling day, I made the choice that there was still plenty of time to recharge and refresh. I began humming as I went upstairs to my bedroom and grabbed my towel, then entered the bathroom located in my bedroom.

Because it was suc

Athena's POV As I walked to the neighboring railway station on my way to work, I saw the commotion in my neighborhood. My neighbor, Janet's house, was surrounded by the yellow barricade tape. TV news reporters are capturing and transmitting the spectacle, with the cameraman clutching his precious camcorder, while other reporters are strewn all through the house. I came to a standstill as I watched a detective and the chief of police emerge from the house, dumbfounded. The reporters hurried past them, seeking to acquire some information and make a statement about the situation. They waived the reporters away before getting into their cars and driving away, leaving the reporters and eavesdroppers alone. I happen to stumble onto a bystander and question the cause of the upheaval. His response is one I will never forget. "Janet was a wonderful neighbor who was murdered by some vicious and lunatic psycho. Everything about h

Unknown POV When I entered the basement, I unearthed all of my collections in glass jars that had been soaked in a soluble solution to keep them from decaying. Each jar has its name emblazoned on it so that it can easily be identified. I opened another empty jar and poured a diluted solution into it, almost completely filling the glass. Then I opened the fridge and took out a resealable plastic bag that I had placed there the night before. I put on my hand gloves and opened the plastic back to take the thing out from the inside. I tilted it up against my face to get a better look at it, then breathed its exquisite scent. I entered the window and started to notice the bright, full moon shining above me. I looked down at what I was holding, which glistened in the moonlight with its shimmery, scarlet composition — the heart. I sighed contentedly and returned to my glass jar collection. I then carefully placed the

Cloud's POV I was resting on my bed, sluggishly, when I realized I had not even eaten my lunch yet. I yawned lazily and walked downstairs to cook my meal. I have decided to spend my weekend at my house to relax. I am still stuffed from last night's meal with Athena. Her foods are very scrumptious. It can gratify any picky diners and hungry stomach. And it made me adore her even more for it. As I remembered the previous night's dinner, it was as though my stomach recognized its familiarity with its dishes and growled fiercely. I busted out laughing as I opened my refrigerator and took out some hot dogs and eggs. I began cooking, recalling the first time I saw Athena in her kitchen preparing dishes for us. She appears to be confident as she hums while cooking, whereas here I am, battling to remove the yolk from the egg as a whole. As soon as I finished cooking, I began eating my lunch. I tried to envision myself enjoying Athena'

  • The Dark Silhouette   CHAPTER 8 - Official

Megan's POV I was horrified as I glanced at the attractive man at our cafeteria door. He resembles an angel who has descended from heaven. The main difference is that he appears to lack wings. And he looks brand new in this environment, like a fresh kill. Oops. Perhaps a recently hired employee from our company? I could not recall the last time I spent time with a man. When he began to speak in a frigid, baritone voice, I have become determined to strike up a conversation with the new man. "Why haven't you responded to any of my calls or texts?" Confounded, I started to look at the person he was asking and realized it was Athena. Wait, what? "Could it be because I am in the middle of my work?" replied Athena, rolling her eyes. "Even so! Have you understood how much fear I have had to endure simply to find out if you are totally safe and sound?" he answered. "Well, isn't it possible to call bac

Unknown POV I was staring at the woman as she walked into her boyfriend's apartment. I decided to park my car on the corner, a few inches away from the house, so that I wouldn't be easily noticed and arouse suspicion. I waited for the woman for more than three hours. I then noticed her exiting her boyfriend's front door and making her way to a nearby train station a few minutes later. I was following her from behind, and she was aware of my presence. "Hello, are you lost?" she asked sweetly. I sheepishly smiled and invited her to hop in my car, saying that I am willing to drive her safely to her destination because her lover had failed to do so, I added to myself. She hopped in, closed the passenger-side door, and turned to face me. She stated solemnly, "Thank you for your thoughtfulness. I will be eternally grateful for this. I hope to be able to repay this favor you have done for me in the near future." "Ther

Athena's POV We leave the restaurant hand in hand, headed to the park where we used to hang out just to gaze at the sky while having deep conversations. We had just finished a sumptuous meal at our favorite diner when we observed a crown circling the corner of the block. There is yellow barricade tape around, as well as cops and a detective. I recognized the detective because he looked similar to the one I saw at Janet's crime scene. Aside from the authorities, there are some press reporters and cameramen on the scene. "Is there a new film on the way? Is this some type of recording?" I overheard Cloud inquire. "No, I don't believe so. From a distance, I recognize the detective. He's the same person who's been working on Janet's case," I responded courteously. We approached the site slowly because we were inquisitive. Cloud, who was so protective of me, sought to cover my eyes. But I flashed him a consoling glance and s

  • The Dark Silhouette   CHAPTER 11 - The Menacing Dream

Cloud's POV I was deep asleep when I sprang out of thebed, desperately gasping for breath in an attempt to capture somefresh air. I had a really strange and intense nightmare about Athena. I could notremember every part of it, but I swear I heard her scream from my hellish experience nightmare. I looked out the window and noticed that it was raining severely, almost as if there was a storm. The leaves of the trees are furiously swinging, and the wood and roof are being impeded from a distance. I can also hear the wind howling from the outside. I got out of bed and headed downstairs to grab a glass of cold water to help me stabilize my breathing. I opened the refrigerator and took out the pitcher of water, then went to the cupboard to retrieve a glass and poured it in. Similarly, I swallowed each drop of liquid, allowing it to enter my deepest core. I glanced at the wall clock, which showed that it was already two o'c

Cloud's POV I arrived at Athena's street and noticed from a distance that there are a swarm of press reporters and cops circling her apartment. I pressed the accelerator extremely hard and came to a screeching halt as I approached her house. My action shocked the crowd, but I am not concerned primarily about anything, except for Athena's safety. I stormedout of my car and walked to her front door without bothering to fix my parking. The chief of police stepped in my pathand managed to grab my shoulder, attempting to prevent me from entering. I continued to insist on entering and began savagely pushing the cop, shrieking that I had the right to be there. Other cops had already grabbed my shoulders from behindto prevent me from possiblyinjuring the chief of police. "Who are you and what brings you here?" the chief sternly questioned me. And my son Sky being so obedient, nodded and waved happily as he ran to play with his kite. "Hey, are you okay?" Dimitri asked me. I smiled and nodded. Eight years have passed.. Cloud, I'm not sure how I'm going to tell him about you. Sky expressed an interest in learning more about you as he grew older. I'm terrified and perplexed. Because the last time I told him about you, he was aware of how well things were going between us at the time. He knew there was no way we could be this far apart—because he knew you've been deeply in love with me since the day we met and that you'd waited so long just to be able to hold my hand respectfully in yours. He was well aware that I had fallen in love with your inconsequential effor

But darkness.I tried to open my heavily drooping eyelids, as though I was forcefully knocked unconscious by some nauseous fragrance that has my world spinning around. After a few seconds, I finally recalled all the past occurrences before I had fallen asleep which instantly made me open my eyes and wander around.I was seated and tied up in a chair where you can see a fully painted ambiance in the room. White walls, white ceilings, and there was a window on the corner. It was filled with the chilliness coming from the air condition unit mounted to the wall, and there was a long table made with metal on each corner of the room with glass jars and lids on top of it. Judging from the overall appearance, it certainly looks like a laboratory that you

  • The Dark Silhouette   CHAPTER 118 - Revenge

Athena's POVJust when I thought it was going to be the end of my once miserable life, a powerful voice echoed in my ears in the middle of the night. It was just a soft whisper, but enough to give me enough hope and strength. It was no other but Cloud.I watched as he carefully and steadily released the thick rope tightly wrapped around my body as I was groped into the branch of a tree. Then he gestured me to remain as silent and calm as I could until we could escape from the area of the incident. We were already running hand in hand, with no reason to look back, when the vivid image of Zidane, Lovi, and Chad's lifeless body, along with the missing heart on the facet of their chest, made my entire body shiver in fear and cowardness."Cloud, what the hell was going on?" As though I could no longer restrain the confusion that was starting to occupy my entire thoughts and consciousness, I asked as I muffled a sob.Clou

Athena's POVI was about to go into a deep slumber when I suddenly hear an ear-piercing, bloodcurdling scream from a distance. Along with its frightful screams in the dark, followed by the howling of the wolves from somewhere.Shivering because of the eeriness of the night, I tried to reach for my pillow and wrap it all over my body so I might as well find some comfort. I turned my body to another side and was about to give Cloud an embrace when I had come to the realization that there was no one sleeping next to me.Feeling dazed, I sat up and confirmed that he was, indeed, gone. Where the heck was he in the middle of the night? I wondered to myself. I pulled on a jacket and unzipped the tent. As I went out to search for Cloud, the cold and chilly breeze brushed through my skin that sends shivers down my spine.I was strolling around when I accidentally slipped because I could not see through the darkness of the night. • The Dark Silhouette   CHAPTER 116 - Now and Forever

Lovi's POVZidane's death had been a tragic event for us. We were just here for three days, yet the despicable crime behind his death was enough to spoil the vibe of the whole camping trip which was meant to celebrate Athena and Cloud's recent engagement. Yet, we were all gathered around to feel the remorse and sorrow of one of our friend's unexpected passing. What was alarming was that, his heart was missing, which means to say that he was one of those victims of the controversial crime lingering for over a year now. And to mention that if Zidane was killed right at this time and place, then there was no doubt that the serial killer of all the past crimes was just out here in the mountain, lingering with us. Probably watching us."Shit!" I overheard Cloud curse. He was holding his mobile phone up in the air, while Chad also did the same."No signal either. We should all plan to return to the city tomorrow morning," Chad informed us. I took a de

  • The Dark Silhouette   CHAPTER 115 - Closure

Dimitri's POVI have heard from Chad that they will be out camping in celebration of Athena and Cloud's recent engagement and that they will be staying there for a week. I have also learned that aside from the soon-to-be weds, they have a bunch of friends spending the time and celebrating with them. If I remember it correctly, they were 6 in total. In all honesty, Athena sent me a text message a few days ago inviting me to come with them, but I politely refused and used the excuse that I could not leave Detective Amiri alone seeing that this would be short notice. But in reality, I would gladly grab this opportunity just to accept her invitation if things were only different. However, it clearly was not, so I give myself some credit for being mature enough to respect myself even more by setting my boundaries and knowing my place and limitations.I heard a single knock at the door, where it revealed Detective Amiri. He was holding a folder with d

  • The Dark Silhouette   CHAPTER 114 - Reunited

Athena's POVEveryone in the group was laughing and having a good time as we ate our dinner at the diner's when the doorbell rang, signaling that someone had just entered the vicinity. My attention was drawn away from the task at hand by the soft and subtle background noise, which piqued my interest. From the hallway, a familiar figure appeared out of nowhere after only a few seconds or minutes. In the end, Cloud noticed my distraction and shifted his gaze to the figure, which I had observed as his jolly and humorous expression on his face suddenly and unexpectedly vanished in an instant. We must have drawn Lovi and Chad's attention to his distressed appearance because they both turned their heads in the direction of where we were looking."Hi, guys," Megan said as she walked up to us and gave us a timid smile."What are you doing here, Megan?" When Megan suddenly appeared, it was Lovi who inquired, her brows furrowed in irritation and di

  • The Dark Silhouette   CHAPTER 113 - Little Less Love

Megan's POVThis week felt like a bumpy roller coaster ride. All the synonyms and antonyms of misery that can be found in dictionaries were mixed in with it: sorrow and pain, shock and dismay, guilt and innocence, and everything in between. I've lost one person in my life who has stood by me through my witticisms and sobriety, and I'm devastated. My body has become frail, and I've become careless with the things I've been guarding for a long period of time. My immune system was undoubtedly weakened as a result of an exhausting and draining life challenge. I was almost convinced that this was the end of my life—I was almost ready to blame myself for all of those unhealthy matters and to feel ashamed. My sources of courage and energy have dried up, and I'm at a loss for what to do when it feels like living is a sinful pleasure. And what hurts the most is the realization that this moment marked the beginning of an unforgettable chapter in my life, one that

  • The Dark Silhouette   CHAPTER 112 - Overcast Horizon

Athena's POVJust before you came across me, I allowed myself to drown and suffocate in an ocean of uncertainties. I figured it was fine as long as I got some, as long as I had a couple of them. I mistakenly believed that happiness consisted solely in giving your all to see someone smile, when in fact it is comprised of actually doing so while loving yourself at the same time. I've allowed myself to look outside of myself for happiness when it should have begun within me. And then you came along, making me feel valuable and sufficient all of the time. You look after me, taking advantage of every opportunity to demonstrate your affection. Even on your busiest days, you find the time. The fact that you never forget to check in on me is amusing, especially given the fact that it always happens when I am missing your presence the most. When I thought I was already deserving of less, you showed me that I am deserving of even more. And it was there that I disco
