MATICE

I hated Cassandra. I hated how she hung all over Oliver. I hated how everyone looked at her like she was perfect because she was the last of her kind. I hated how nasty she was to the younger girls. Why did she have to make them feel so low? She was the lowest of low. It was totally worth being dropped into the pit for two days. Watching her run from the dining room covered in ketchup. I had to let VIctoria know I had her back. I had always kept my distance. I didn't want Lucian to punish her for my bad behaviour. They like to break us that way. Hurt the ones he cared about. That is why I only got close to Oliver and Anton. They could handle their own. Victoria was sweet. Oliver told me how her Grandfather Thadeus abused her. He founded the school and dropped her here as soon as her guardian would let him. The oracle for this continent had a special connection to her. That was not often oracled bonded to wolves or witches for that matter, and Victoria was both. She didn't know this, yet she was too young emotionally and mentally to know her true potential. Part of me thinks that is why Cassandra picks on her. She knows she is more powerful than her, but she hasn't unlocked her true power yet.

I will have my first solo assignment today. It was more a test than anything. They made it clear if my target didn't end up dead or I didn't return. They would kill Oliver. I knew they wouldn't. They needed him. He was by far the smartest. They were already getting him to make chemical bombs and supernatural poisons. He was ever the dutiful soldier. He had no family. The academy had killed his whole family. This is all he'd ever known. I styled my hair in loose curls and put on some overall shorts. I had to play the innocent little girl routine for my target not to suspect anything. He was a high-ranking city official. His wife would take the b**e, taking me in a lost little girl who didn't remember her family. They had given me a doll to take with me. It felt so foreign-looking at this doll. I had never had a doll or a toy. They taught us how to throw blades, not braid hair. I needed to get in place the poison Oliver had made in his brandy and then shimmered away when no one was looking. The poison would look like a heart attack. It was simple but more of a test than a real assignment. To see if I could kill an innocent man.

Made a wonderful and sweet woman a widow. A woman nice enough to take in a sweet lost child. I reported to my task supervisor Valen, he was a decent enough guy. He didn't try and touch us like some of the other supervisors—sick twisted men. I had willingly let some of them have me to protect some of the younger girls. I had a switch I could flip my emotions on and off. Feel nothing, nothing could break me anymore. They had done that when they killed my sister. My sweet, obedient sister. She wasn't as strong as I was. They didn't realize killing my twin would transfer her power to me.

*FLASHBACK*

I held my sister Melody tightly as the footsteps stopped in front of our room door. I knew they were coming to punish me for using magic again. The door opened slowly, and it took a minute for Thadeus and Lucian to come in. Lucian had a cruel smile on his face, and Thadeus just kept his hands in his pockets.

"Who used the magic?" I gulped. If I admitted it, they would hurt Melody, but if I lied, what would they do?

"It was me," Melody said without hesitation. Thadeus looked shocked.

"Really, girl? Not Matice? I thought you were the good sister?"

"I am sorry I won't do it again. I will take my punishment." I don't know if the shock or the fear on my face gave us away, but Thadeus grabbed Melody by the hair and yanked her away from me.

"Please, no, it was me, it was me. Hurt me, punish me. Please don't hurt my sister!" I cried.

"Well, I have to punish both of you. One for lying, the other for magic." Lucian grabbed me, and Thadeus pulled Melody along by her hair. They put us in a stainless steel room. They used this room for sterilization and torture. We weren't of age yet to remove our sex organs, so torture it was. I prayed to whatever being there was to save us from whatever was about to happen. We were six years old. The only Martel twins ever born. It was unheard of that vampires and witches would reproduce. Usually, the baby dies. In this case, we were both left alive. Soon to be the Coven Co-Leaders. Our joint power was great than even the white witch. We didn't lose stamina the way witches do. We draw on the magic of our vampire genes. The one spell I knew I could use would be our only chance. I had to do it now and quickly. I whispered the words I had memorized from the spellbook in the library. The lights shattered. I told Melody to run. She was the good one. She needed to escape this place and run the coven. So many witches needed her kind, loving guidance. She shoved me out the door, her hands glowing, and it locked the three of them inside. I screamed for her trying to use all the magic I knew how to handle. I put my hands on the door, feeling their heat. I knew I could syphon the magic from the binding spells on the building. It would give away that I was a syphon, but I needed to save my sister who knows what they would do to her. I opened the door. Thadeus had her by the neck. Lucian was unconscious, and blood was gushing from his eye socket. His eye is gone.

"You think you can kill me? Do you think you are strong enough? You don't know who you mess with, girl!" He spat girl with so much hatred I did the only thing I could think of—the merging spell. I started chanting the spell that I was born to use when we became coven leaders. I knew it would weaken me, but I had to do it, give Melody a fighting chance to get away. Before I could finish, I watched him rip her heart from her chest. Her body goes limp, and a surge of power lept from my body, knocking Thadeus back. I ran to my sister, holding her dead body, crying, rocking her back and forth.

"Go into peace, Go into love, find our mother and live a torture-free life. I am so sorry I couldn't save you." I set her body on fire in that room so they could not use her for experiments. I stood over a shaking Thadeus.

"I may be just a girl, but you are the devil himself, and the devil never wins." I raised my arm to snap his neck, but I felt a needle prick my arm. Darkness... Utter darkness.

I was pulled from the memory when the door opened and Marcus with his chocolate-coloured chair and honey-coloured eyes walked in. He was handsome in a natural kind of way and not as terrible as the rest of the guards.

"You ready?"

"I was born ready."

"Remember don't let your emotions get the best of you. It's a job, when it's done you will have past your final test for solo assignments." I just nodded and followed him out, shutting off the last of my humanity if I ever had any.

VICTORIA It was my birthday today, and I was so excited to see Damon and my little sister Hanna I had only met her a few times as she was a few years younger than me. Thadeus was driving us to the packhouse. I was forbidden to see Esmerelda. He said there would be consequences if I tried to reach out to her in any capacity. I was just happy to be free of Artamas for a week. For a whole week of freedom, I just had to stay away from Thadeus when he was in a mood. He was an excellent faker, pretending to be this loving, caring grandfather and Alpha around the pack, but people inside the packhouse knew. I was shown to my new room. It was in the tower on the other side of the castle-like packhouse, far away from Damon and Hanna. I knew it was because he had spelled it so that I couldn't use any magic. Also, I couldn't escape. It was the same as the last time I visited. Thadeus and told everyone it was because school was so intense I needed the silence, a break far from everyone. The one

VICTORIA It was past 3 am when I finally shifted, Zarina was fast, and I could tell she was black in colour from looking at my paws. I wish I could see what she looked like in a mirror, but I wasn't going to get that chance. I needed to sneak back into my room. It was way too late to be out for a stroll. I felt like a criminal creeping back into my room. One of the perks I learned at Artamas is how to be invisible. I crept back to my room and closed the door. I got into my nightclothes, and before I could drift off, Zarina spoke to me. "Good night, precious girl. I will always take care of you." Before I could even respond, I was asleep. I don't know how long I was sleeping, definitely not long enough when Zarina urged me to wake up. I opened my eyes, and Thadeus sat in a chair at the end of my bed, watching me. "Good, you are awake. I wanted you to take your punishment for disobeying me while awake to remember why you don't ever disobey me." There was an evil glint in his eye

Years laterVICTORIA Oliver and I sat outside a high school watching two students. They were sitting on a picnic table laughing. I thought it was a weird assignment. We don't usually target minors unless they are deemed dangerous or out of control. These kids seemed normal I couldn't sense any magic, so they weren't supernatural. I never questioned Anton. He sent Oliver and me on this mission. Surveillance only. Anton and Marcus had taken over leadership of Artamas and changed the name to Blood Moon Assassins. Anton was a good leader, and Marcus was a nice enough guy for a man who allowed children to be stolen and purchased for their abilities. We knew never to cross him. Even Anton didn't question Marcus. They kept Lucian on as the lead henchman, and it took everything inside me not to kill him. We still hunted dangerous supernatural beings and creatures that escape from the depths of places worse than hell, but with a new name and new types of missions. The "school" still owned us.

OLIVER Shifting always cleared my mind. My sister Lucy was in high school. I kept my eye on her since I found out where they put her. I killed everyone at the Academy who knew who she was. The Academy was the facility that killed my mother and sold me to Thadeous Nash and his band of wannabe assassins. Bennet wolves were extremely valuable. Our abilities and strong Alpha-blooded wolves make great killing machines. I was able to hide Lucy and Lanie's true heritage. Thadeous wasn't smart enough to figure out that while he made us all study and pushed us to the breaking point creating Child genius assassins. We were all better trained and more intelligent than he would ever be. He thought his brood of morons could contain us, but they did what we allowed, and he knew it deep down we ran things. What could go wrong? What an idiot. I can't believe it was Victoria who killed him. She was a poison expert, but they said her wolf tore out his throat. The thing is, she hates killing. She would

OLIVERI knew something was off when Matice never came into view. The target was sitting in his office drinking some amber liquid. She should have definitely made it in there by now. I left the rooftop where I was scouting and made my way into the building. I could feel the shift as Vadar perked up. Magic dampeners, they knew we were coming. I pulled an explosive arrow to knock out the power to the building. I let Vadar come forward to enhance my hearing and night vision. I could smell the thick tang of blood. A lot of blood. Matice came through here with her sword. There were heads all down this hallway. A lot of men for this target. He must be a big deal. I turned the corner and made my way up the stairwell. I could pick up Matice's scent. I followed it until I hit the 8th floor. It was quiet, too quiet. I Stopped to focus, leaning into Vadar's skills and special abilities. I could hear eight heartbeats down the hall on the left.Five humans, two vampires and a werebear. Shit, that'

VICTORIA Oliver was being sprayed with wolfsbane. His skin was horribly burned, and Matice was tied to a chair with silver and Jimson weed. She thrashed and screamed for Oliver, so distraught she didn't notice Mason, and I enter the room. There was a man who smelled like Matice but looked only twenty years old. It couldn't be her father. I heard vampires didn't age, but he seemed so young to have a 17-year-old daughter. Before anyone could do anything, I shifted and tore the man's arms off who was spraying Oliver. He would soon bleed out. He was some sort of vampire hybrid. I stocked towards Matice's father, who was just standing there watching all this unfold. Suddenly I felt my magic return. I shifted back to my human form and snapped his neck using my magic. I didn't want to kill him yet. I wanted answers. I want to know why they were torturing Oliver and how he found out about their mission. Anton placed cuffs on him, and Daniel shimmered him to the truck while Anton and I got Ol

VICTORIA I had never been this tired in all my life. I must have pushed myself too hard in training yesterday. I was even too tired to heal myself. What day was it? What class did I even have? My alarm clock sounded so weird—less of an alarm and more of a slow beep. Like a hospital monitor, my brain fog started to clear, and the panic set in. I was in the lab. They were experimenting on me again. How did Anton let this happen? He said that would all stop with his leadership. I started screaming and trashing I would never let this happen again. ZARINA I screamed, trying to call out to my wolf, but she was silent. What did you do to me? I screamed again but realized I wasn't restrained. This must be part of their experiment. Suddenly a familiar scent surrounded me, and I felt calmer. "Damon! Get me out of here, please!" I cried. I was so tired I had no fight left in me. "Hey, hey, hey, it's okay. I'm here. LUCY I had a vision of Devon's sister being held captive. I didn't know she was Devon's sister, nor did I understand the significance of the vision. I let it go, but when Damon called to tell me what had happened, I felt sick. I knew this was tied to us somehow. I was just too tired to put it together. This baby was killing me. I was a week overdue. After everyone left, I went to bed. I needed to lie down and put my feet up. I had been having Braxton hicks all week. This baby was coming, and soon. I drifted off to sleep and seemed to wake up when my phone buzzed like crazy. Thirty missed notifications. I opened my phone and called Damon back. "Angel, are you ok?" "yes, I am fine. Why?" "You aren't in any pain?" "I am always in pain, what's going on?" "I felt an awful pain in my back. I worried you had fallen. Ellen and Lanie are on their way to you now. I’ll be back when I can.” I swung my legs over the side and stood up. “Omg,” I think. I peed my pants. “What, Angel? What’s w

VICTORIA I don’t know what possessed me to message Devon. I missed him. Was it this quaint little town with all the families farming together or was the heat getting to my head? I guess I’ll never know. I thought with the rejection, the bond would fizzle out. I still felt incredibly drawn to him. Thinking of him constantly and that little dimple on his face when he tries not to laugh at something I’ve said. I had already completed the first part of my assignment. I was to hack the secure CIA server to find the safe house of one of their witnesses. Witness or not he was still the man who murdered innocent women and children for money. So it was his turn. I wanted to take my time, but Oliver needed it to look like a robbery; like it or not, Oliver out-ranked me. Mostly because he was politically correct and looked great in a suit, I, on the other hand, could not kiss ass to save my life. I said what I thought when I thought it, and I don’t really care if you’re offended. That’s why I

DEVON It had been over a week since my date with Victoria. Besides a few single-worded text messages, she was radio silent. Is she avoiding me? Is she on an assignment? Was the date not as great as I thought it was? I was a mess. Is this how girls felt when guys didn't call right away? No wonder girls were crazy. This feeling makes me crazy! I figured I would burn off some of this frustration with a run and a beer. I changed into some sweats and my Nike cross trainers and hit the trails. My head felt at peace in the trails along the river—nothing quite like birds chirping and the smell of pine in the fall. I made it to the clearing near the cliff's side. My favourite spot to clear my head. I couldn't let my anxiety get too high. Now that I was harnessing all the power from the warlock kingdom, I needed to be in control of my every thought, emotion and feeling. I daydreamed about Victoria for a while. VICTORIAI wanted to make it up to Devon. Rejecting him was not my original plan, but I panicked. I really wanted him to love me for me. Not forced by the stupid mate bond. What I didn't expect was to feel so empty after he accepted. I planned a whole romantic date at my secret safe haven. I wanted to be honest. I wanted him to know who I really was, and if he chose to walk away, so be it. But when he reached over and asked me how I felt about never having children, I didn't know how to respond because no one had ever asked me that before. No one really asked me how I felt about anything. Sure they would ask my advice on how to kill someone or hack into a secure facility but how I felt about anything was never something I had faced—that easy task of just shoving it down and not feeling anything. Yet when Devon touched my hand and asked me. I was momentarily stunned before our food arrived. I didn't know what to say. I had them prepare the best seabass and garlic fried rice and vegetabl

Zarina is mad at me that I gave up our mate, but he doesn't even have a wolf; who is she even bonded to? I can feel Lucy's eyes on me even as she talks with Damon. As we cross the border in our pack territory, I ask the driver to stop. "I need to go for a run. I'll meet you back at the packhouse?" "Ya sounds good. I'll put some tea on." Lucy smiles, knowing I need space but offering to be there in case I need her. "No, Macey will make tea. You are going to rest. It was a big long night out." I laugh, walking over to the closet. "This one is chocolate, so not black." I push a few things aside, and there is a three-quarter-length red dress that shows entirely too much breast but judging by the look on Lucy's face, she likes this one. "Tori, this one!
