In the minute it took me to process what my eyes were seeing, Irene screamed and pushed Jackson’s Beta away. In the blink of an eye, she was smoothing down her skirt and Todd, the Beta, was buttoning his jeans. He was Jackson’s best friend and yet -

“What are you doing here?” Irene growled, glaring at me.

“The baby –“ I looked at her stomach and burst into laughter.

“You crazy bitch!” Her eyes whipped to Todd who was red in the face. “Why are you –“ I clutched my stomach and doubled over, wheezing as tears rolled down my cheeks. I laughed until my chest hurt and breathing became too difficult.

My mate threw me out for this woman. The same woman getting slutted out by his best friend.

“Todd, do something!” She exclaimed and the Beta started towards me with eyes filled with anxiety.

“Is it even his?” I asked, my voice hoarse.

“Of course, it’s his!” Irene screeched. “Todd – You fool, we have to get rid of her!” She yelled at the beta.

I choked as he grabbed my neck. Then we heard the unmistakable sound of the door opening. Todd’s grip on my neck loosened and I froze upon hearing my stepmother’s voice.

“Who is there!?” She shouted but before any of us could answer, Irene screamed as she launched herself into a wall so hard she bounced back and collapsed to the ground.

“My baby!” My stepmother shrieked, bounding up the stairs. “Oh goddess, what have you done!?” Eyes filled with hatred met mine as she crouched beside her daughter. “Call the Alpha! Quick, call the Alpha!” She screamed at Todd as she gathered Irene into her arms.

“What happened?” My father asked as he got to the scene.

“Mum, d- dad –“ Irene touched her belly as she groaned. “My baby – she tried to hurt my baby.”

My body pressed itself into a wall as Thelma, my stepmother, turned to me. There were few people in the world that scared me and this woman scared me the most of them all. She was a beta but she was as imposing and domineering as an Alpha in that moment.

“Is this true?” My father turned to me. Gazing at him, it was hard to decide whether he wanted to hear my side of the story or if he was asking just for formalities. However, before I could speak, Todd interjected.

“Yes. I saw it!” My father’s brows raised and Todd continued. “I was passing when I heard Irene’s screams so I came to check and saw Lu – Chantelle attacking her.”

“You ungrateful bitch!” Thelma growled, rising.

“Take your daughter to the hospital before she bleeds everywhere,” my father cut her off.

“Y – Yes.” She nodded, beckoning on Todd.

The Beta gathered Irene into his arms and just like that, the stench of blood spread. Thelma followed behind them, wailing and cursing my name.

I had to applaud Irene. She was a genius at making me into a villain without a second’s notice.

Alone with my father, my mind made up a hundred different scenarios. I thought of Jackson and shuddered, my hands quivering as I tried to wipe my sweat.

“I didn’t push her,” I muttered. “I swear – I didn’t – I didn’t push her.” I looked up to catch my father’s gaze.

“She is pregnant with the Alpha’s child and you are not the Luna anymore,” he said in a monotone. It was his way of telling me it was my word against Irene’s and my word held no water.

“You – Do you believe me? I – didn’t –  Do you believe me?” My legs locked, my heart raced and my chest tightened.

I needed someone to believe me. I did nothing. If only – If only someone believed me then maybe the future playing out in my head would be different. I needed a witness. Words choked me and spewed from my lips. My eyes raised to meet my father’s but his expression remained flat.

“What does it matter if I do?” He asked and I screamed. I screamed so hard that I choked but he barely flinched as he walked away, leaving me with a small pool of Irene’s blood and a headache.

My back against a wall, I slid down to the floor and grabbed my head in my hands.

My word against Irene’s.

Who would believe me?

Nobody. Nobody would believe I did not try to hurt my mate’s pregnant mistress.

Ice flooded my veins as our front door flew open. Back straightening, I stood as Jackson approached with fire blazing in his eyes.

“Jack –“ He didn’t let me complete my statement.

My head whipped to the side as he hit me and I saw stars. My ears rang and I tasted blood as my teeth cut into my tongue. I stumbled but a strong arm grabbed me before I hit the ground and another slap deafened my ears.

“Jackson – Please –“ I pleaded as he landed another slap that threatened to split my eardrums but a loud growl rumbled up his chest.

“My name – Who gave you the right –“ He heaved. “My mother was right about you.” His eyes darkened. “You are nothing but ill luck – a witch! That’s why you can’t have a child of your own. You’re evil!”

“May I ask what’s going on?” My father’s voice never sounded better than it did then.

“This witch you call a daughter tried to kill my child!” Jack growled, throttling me. “Is this how you raised her –“ He turned his anger and hatred on my father.

“Jack –“ I grabbed the hand throttling me.

“Careful,” my father murmured. “Do not forget who I am.”

As if remembering my father’s status as the biggest benefactor of the pack, Jack let me go, throwing me against a wall and dusting his hands. “You better hope nothing happens to my pup,” he spat, turning on his heels and exiting the house with a loud slam of the front door.

“What do I do? What do I do?” I sobbed into my palms, my chest constricted and my head banging.

It was truly over.

As my father said, it was my word against Irene’s and by the next morning, the news of how I attacked Irene out of jealousy had spread. It was no surprise that my mate –ex-mate– called me out before the entire pack to banish me.

“You are lucky she’s fine,” he hissed. “I would have killed you with my bare hands if anything happened to Irene and my pup.”

I looked up at Jackson and saw nothing of the man I fell in love with. It was as if an entirely different person was glaring down at me. There was no love, no fondness, not even familiarity in his harsh gaze, only anger and contempt.

I wanted him to know the woman he chose over me had been spread out by his Beta the previous day but I held my tongue. He would not believe me. No one would.

“I knew it! I knew you were nothing but bad luck!” Jackson’s mother came running at me, grabbing me by my hair and pulling until I saw stars. “Evil woman! Did my son make you barren? Why did you choose to make his life difficult?” She yelled at the top of her lungs, shoving me to the ground and pressing me down with her foot.

“Did he take away your womb?” She ground her foot into my belly. “Is it his fault you’re empty? How dare you attack our next Alpha! What did Blood Moon ever do to you?” She screamed and screamed, her shoes ripping my shirt and bruising my skin.

I stayed still as she stepped on me, kicked me and spat on me. I stayed still as she rained insults on me. I stayed still until she got tired and the pack warriors dragged me to my feet. Through it all, I stayed silent.

I was about to be kicked out of my pack, my home.

“From today henceforth, Chantelle Park –“ Jackson’s voice boomed in the hall but then he went white in the face.

I felt it. We all felt it; the shift in power as a predator higher than our Alpha entered our territory.

“Trouble,” a teenage boy came rushing in, panting for breath. “There’s trouble!” He shrieked.

“What’s happening?” Someone in the crowd asked.

“They say –“ the boy trailed off to catch his breath, “the cursed alpha,” he whispered and we all knew what that meant.

The gathering for my banishment turned into an emergency pack meeting. Everyone huddled into the hall as warriors trooped in and out.‘What do we do? Are we going into lockdown?’ A girl beside me asked her father.‘We have to hear the Alpha’s decision,’ her father answered, squeezing her to his side. They huddled into each other while I stood to the side wishing I had someone to hold for assurance. How could this be happening? Tales of the cursed alpha were nothing more than tales. We heard of his exploits but like every misfortune, we all believed it would never befall us. Other packs were invaded but no one ever believed theirs would also suffer an invasion.“Ahem.” The hall went dead silent when Jackson cleared his throat. “As you heard, the cursed Alpha Valens and his men have breached our borders and are currently on their way here,” he started and loud murmurings broke out in the hall.‘Dad, I’m scared,’ the girl beside me hugged her father tighter.I was scared too. The red eyes of his wolf became unfocused for a second and I tried to right myself but then they refocused and my heart jumped to my throat. “You’ve been rather elusive –“ The blood rushing to my head drowned out the rest of his statement.I staggered, gripping the chair closest to me as my knees buckled. A sudden fire roared in my guts, spreading up to my head and down to my toes. Clenching my teeth and my fists, I fought down the pants rising from my chest. My vision blurred. My teeth bit into my lips until I tasted blood. My entire body felt too hot for me. I’d felt nothing like this before – not even a tenth of this. I was burning from the inside out; tossed right into hell.Would I die a slow death after burning from inside? Was that my fate?“Ha, these bastards.” The Alpha’s pants reached me from a faraway place. “Shit – Hell – You –“ He hissed then groaned. “You have to come to me.” I heard his distorted voice that seemed to come from a long distance away.My hazy gaze cleared

VALENSIt started when I was nine. I wanted to go to this place and that, visit here and there. Everyone laughed at my enthusiasm for travelling, calling me an explorer but then it was confirmed I had inherited my father’s curse. No one laughed after that. Of all things to inherit, I just had to inherit a curse. While I slept, I dreamt of warmth, of a woman with beautiful amber eyes and reddened skin. Since I hit puberty and the curse came alive, I lost the ability to see colours. Even in my dreams, my world was grey, so it was a fascinating dream. The woman was the most fascinating to me but like a wicked prank, every time I reached for her, she slipped through my grasp like smoke.I woke up with my hands reaching for thin air and then I blinked once, twice, ten times. My eyes flitted across the room as my mouth dropped open. No matter how many times I hit myself, no matter how many times I blinked my eyes and pinched myself, the scene remained unchanged. The world around me was ali

*A Month Later* I had to move again. Ever since I fled Blood Moon, I didn’t stay at a place for more than a few days. I was too anxious to stay put. My feet dragged. My bones were weary but I had to move. How long before the cursed alpha forgot about me? I barely had any money left and moving as often as I did, I could not get a job. Because of one man, I had to hide out in different dirty motel rooms, fearing for my life. I could barely remember that night but it still haunted me. I was sick of running. I was also sick and running. ‘You should go to the hospital,’ Asia, my wolf, muttered as I dragged my tired body into the bus to my next location. ‘We can’t afford to,’ I reminded her. I’d felt off for a few days but I chalked it up to the stress of being a fugitive. If I went to a hospital, they would have a lot of questions, questions I could not answer. I didn’t know how many people the cursed alpha had on the lookout for me so I had to be careful. Until he forgot I existed, I

“A – Alpha,” I stuttered because my fried brain could not come up with anything else. Did my wolf just call this man her mate? Surely, she had to be mistaken. There was no way – My heart was pounding with the way he stared at me. My breath hitched when he took a step forward, crowding into my space. “Chantelle.” My name rolled off his lips like velvet. “You’ve been very, very bad,” he said and I avoided his gaze. “I – Sorry – Sorry.” What could I say? I could barely breathe much less think. His presence overwhelmed me – suffocated me. I felt like an insect about to be crushed while my wolf squealed like a little rat. “It’s okay.” I froze from head to toe when he touched my face. “I forgive you.” His thumb brushed against my bottom lip and a small shiver made my shoulders tremble. He took another step forward, eliminating the last bit of space between us and then his face drew closer. My shaky legs took a step back. “Hmm.” He hummed, raising his head. I got enthralled in his darke

I avoided his gaze as I nodded wordlessly, feeling both ashamed and nervous. Clearing my throat, my hand migrated to my stomach. While I prayed for the car ride to end, a stray thought entered my head that had me choking on air. I coughed so violently that even the driver chanced me a glance through the rearview mirror. “What is it?” The cursed – Valens asked and I pasted on a fake smile with trembling lips as I forced down another bout of violent coughing. “N – Nothing,” I managed to answer, feeling dizzy and suffocated under his piercing gaze – a gaze I wanted to escape. Rather than take my answer for it, he asked again, “What is it?” How could I tell him the thought that just crossed my mind? How could I tell him that I was pregnant and there was a chance the baby was his? Earlier in the day, I brushed off the thought of my baby being his because legend had it that only his curse breaker could bear his child but now – now we turned out to be mates. The chances that did not exis

VALENSI couldn't remember ever feeling as light as I did as I watched my mate sleep with a hand cradling her stomach. I had a pup in there. My baby. I found myself caressing her hand over her stomach. She flinched and frowned so, to avoid waking her, I moved my hand but she grabbed it, pressing it firmly against her stomach. My breath caught in my throat as heat spread through my chest. “When are you returning home?” Dami asked.Home.Cursed to wander, I had no home for the past seventeen years. Home meant nothing to me but as I watched the sleeping woman, I thought, ‘things are different now.“Mum misses you,” Dami continued. “Everyone misses you.”Things were different now but home still meant something different to me than it did to Dami.I left home seventeen years ago and I never looked back. It was an offer I’d never received before. Anywhere I wanted to go. Anywhere in the world. I was both excited and nervous at the same. A fresh start. A new life. Anywhere I wanted. I stared, in a daze, at the man offering me this opportunity but it was hard, almost impossible, to maintain eye contact with him when I remembered he’d had his tongue down my throat a minute ago and I felt a sensation too decadent to explain. They say the attraction between true mates was explosive but all my life, it had been nothing but hearsay to me. I couldn’t look up at him, embarrassed at how lustful I’d gotten from a kiss. I’d been on the verge of unravelling in mere minutes as pleasure I’d never gotten even from sex wracked through me and as if to taunt me, the sound of my moans from earlier echoed in my head.“Uh, a beauty – a beautiful place would be fine,” I said. Chancing a glance at him, I saw him already staring at me, his lips pressed together and his jaw grinding. “If that’s not too much tr

“Uggh,” I sighed as I collapsed onto the sofa. “I’m tired of being pregnant,” I muttered as I sank deeper into the new sofa. I was a few weeks away from delivery and I felt huge, as in HUGE. There were times when I saw doors and I was scared I wouldn’t be able to fit through. Of course, it always ended up being my imagination but my back was killing me and my feet were now atrociously large. Most of all, I was more than eager to meet my babies. “We’re done, Luna,” the pack members who’d come to help Valens and me move into our new home announced. I’d been looking forward to this day for a long time and it was finally here. The house was fully decorated and we’d set up the babies’ room a while back. Everything was perfect. Life was awesome. We hadn’t moved all those months ago because aside from having to decorate the house, I didn’t think it was right to leave the pack house when the pack was still grieving. Redville had not experienced a battle in decades and although there were a

The sun hitting my face forced me to open my eyes. The sterile smell of antiseptic assailed my nostrils and made me wrinkle my nose. The hospital remained one of the worst places for me. It reminded me of the many long hours I used to spend in fertility clinics trying to conceive. I touched my stomach or I tried to. One of my hands felt numb and the other was gripped in someone else’s hand.I took a deep breath to calm myself as a flood of memories passed through me. It was as if I was being held at knifepoint again and my heart trembled. My lips pursed and tears rapidly filled my eyes. I’d been so scared, goddess, I couldn’t remember a time in my life when I’d been as scared as I was then. My life had flashed before my eyes and I saw everything I was about to lose.I tried to breathe but my chest felt like it was caving in on me and I could still feel a hand around my neck choking the breath out of me. The nightmare was over but the scars it left were permanent. As I lay there in bed

As the howls faded into the night, I continued to pace. Beth tried to comfort me but I couldn’t listen to her. Lucian had dispatched more wolves to the battleground and I knew my mate was badly hurt from the pulsing pain I felt at my side. All I could do now was pray to a goddess that had never answered me. Although I’d trained a lot in the past to augment my lack of strength as an omega, I’d neglected training since I entered Redville. Even if I was not pregnant, there was nothing I could do to help my mate at this point and it made me feel like a failure. My mate was out there risking his life to protect me, to protect us, and all I could do was hide. As his Luna, I should be by his side always and if I should die, I was to die by his side but I was hidden here, biting into my nails and holding back tears. Nestled in the pack’s sanctuary, I could not keep still. I and many other women were wide awake like an owl, the air heavy with tension and fear.Even after the moon waned and nig

*VALENS*My moon stared at me and I stared at her. We both knew what was coming. My wolf was already bristling with anticipation. Chantelle’s face was pale and I needed to reassure her.“It’ll be alright,” I said and I was sure of it. In seventeen years, I’d conquered twenty-four packs. There was nothing to fear from Dahlia and Jackson. I told her just that and it almost felt like bragging.“Then, you couldn’t be killed,” she responded, her voice disturbingly quiet. “But not anymore. Anything could happen and I’d lose you.” Tears filled her eyes and my chest tightened.“I’ll be by your side forever. That’s a promise. You’re mine in every lifetime so I’ll always be by your side, moon.”“Don’t say that.” She shook her head. “It sounds like you’re planning to die and leave my side. Don’t make it sound like you’re saying farewell.”“Farewell? We’ve not even moved into our new home. I’m not leaving you to raise our pups alone.” I hugged her to me. The sensation of having her pressed tight

*JACKSON*“Alpha Jackson, you are a genius!” Alpha Shawn praised me.Shawn was one of the many Alphas I met through my mysterious benefactor and the most powerful of all the Alphas I’d been introduced to. I found him obnoxious and too talkative but he had a large number of resources to throw away as long as he could watch the Cursed Alpha get trampled on. His stocky build was more like a Beta’s and he constantly stank of garlic so he wasn’t the most pleasant person to be around. He was a man that I would have dismissed if I didn’t know the power he wielded. Sometimes while we conversed, I felt resentful that a man like this had so many resources to spare while I was now battling bankruptcy thanks to Alpha Park.As if that bastard had known what lay ahead, he’d started to sell his properties in Blood Moon. I heard he’d made investments in Redville. Thelma had somehow found out that he’d willed everything, including his clothes, to his daughter. Everything he had left would go to her. I

By evening that day, the entire pack was silent. It was weird to me because usually, I’d ask Dahlia to tell me what was going on in the pack and now she wasn’t here anymore. It’s like she’d disappeared into thin air. Knowing her better now, I knew she had planned that too. She was smart so there was no way he didn’t know she’d be caught one day so she must have put in thorough plans into escaping when her crimes were exposed. As for her brother, he was not in jail because he was Valens’ Beta. I’d had to step in when it looked like my mate would unsheathe his claws and take a swipe at his chest and I knew the Beta would not try to defend himself. He’d take it without a word. For now, we put Lucian on probation.I was stressed, feeling feverish and stewing over Dahlia’s lies and how well she played me. It was as if the puzzle of life suddenly clicked. Everything made sense now, from how protective she seemed of Valens to the things happening around me. A girl like Dahlia who could sell

It was chaos after that. Chaos and pandemonium and everything in between. The first thing I did when I got out of my office was to go find my mate and tell him everything Lucian had confessed. His expression, much like mine when I first heard from Lucian, transformed from surprise to anger in the blink of an eye.“That stupid bitch.” I caught him by the hand when he almost stormed out. I’d felt a sharp pain at the side of my rib so I held his hand and doubled over as I gasped for breath.“What – where does it hurt?” Valens doubled back, his anger morphing to concern in the blink of an eye.“It’s - it’s okay. Just a normal random pain.” I didn’t mention it hurt as much as getting stabbed. “I asked Lucian to put her in the dungeons.”“You trust him to not give her a heads up to run?” He asked. It was not an irrational concern and I was ashamed to say I’d never thought of that. Despite it all, I continued to see Lucian as Valens’ Beta. He was loyal to Valens and although he tried to pro

I was taking a break from work by scrolling through an online baby store when someone knocked on my door.“Who is it?” I asked, adding a cute set of baby sock-shoes to my cart.“It’s Lucian. May I come in?” It was rare for the Beta to visit me like this so I asked him to come in with a curious frown on my face. “Good afternoon, Luna,” he said, his expression as blank as usual.“Yeah, good afternoon,” I said as I locked my phone and sat upright. “Is there a problem?”“No,” he responded but after a bit, he spoke again. “Yes. Well, it depends on how you look at it.” Another pause during which he drew a deep breath and then released it. “What am I saying? It’s a problem.” He shook his head with a stiff posture. His beefy muscles were corded and he looked like he was on the verge of an explosion.“Have a seat first.” I offered him a seat, partly due to the tension I read on him and the fact that he was fucking huge and towering over me in an enclosed space.Lucian was supposed to be my Bet

I was going through an appeal from pack members to increase the budget for the kitchen when my phone rang. I picked it up with glee, not even bothering to check who was calling because I needed an excuse to escape the tedious work.“Hello?” I said into the phone.“You sound tired,” came a familiar voice. My eyes lit up and I could not stop myself from exclaiming.“Dami!” Even my wolf was excited to hear her voice. “How have you been?” As I asked that question, I felt a bit of guilt because I’d let myself get carried away to the point I forgot to even contact her.“Oh, I’m alright,” she responded with a laugh. She sounded a lot happier than the last time we spoke. “How have you been?” She asked.“I’m alright! How are things going for you? With the moving and all.” I brought the conversation back to her.In all honesty, nothing was going on with me except for the fact that it felt like Valens was hiding something, something that made him incredibly pissed.
