Chapter 6

Mia’s POV

Adrian’s lawyer contacted me again later that night and asked me to meet at Sinclair Enterprise the next day.

I decided to hand in my resignation along with the divorce paper.

I had been working as his assistant even after our marriage. Now that our divorce is official, It was time for Andrian to hire another assistant.

On the day of our divorce, I woke up early to freshen up.

Looking at my pale reflection in the mirror, I decided to put on a little powder and lip gloss. As the one being dumped, I didn’t want to look so pathetic and defeated.

Just before I left my apartment, a text popped up in my phone.

[Kate: Mia, I know you are meeting with Adrian at the company. Can we talk for a few minutes before you go up?]

I stare at my screen for a long moment before texting back.

[Of course.]

Kate and I met at a café downstairs.

She was sitting by the window when I walk in, her chestnut brown hair giving a silky glow under the sunlight and her side profile is impeccable.

She didn’t look like a someone with a 28-years-old son.

I walked over and sat down, “Hello Mrs. Sinclair.”

“Oh Mia! my dear…I’m so sorry.”

She reached over holding my hand and let out a sigh. Her gorgeous blue eyes reminded me of her son, which made my heart ache.

“It’s fine. Really.” I forced out a smile, “I always thought this day would come.”

“But I thought things were going well between you two! So what happened?” she asked urgently, “Adrian wouldn’t tell me the reason.”

I lapsed into silence.

His parents didn’t know about our contract marriage. They thought all mates got married out of love like themselves.

I didn’t want to be the one to break the truth to Kate.

Kate watched my reaction carefully and asked, “Is there someone else?”

I stayed quiet.

She suddenly straightened up and huffed, “It’s that Lorelei, isn’t it! I knew things would go wrong when she came back! That witch! That’s it. I won’t let her sabotage my son’s marriage like that! I’m calling Adrian right now—”

She reached for her phone, but I stopped her immediately.

“Please don’t.” I begged, “You calling him would only make things worse. He has made up his mind. And so am I. I won’t beg for him to stay.”

If 5 years of working together and 3 years of marriage still couldn’t make Adrian to like me, maybe it was a dead-end anyway.

Time for me to move on.

“Oh love, you are too proud. Both of you…” Kate sighed, “It’s hard for proud people to acknowledge their true feelings. My son loves you. I’m sure! He just doesn’t know it yet…”

Adrian loved me?

That was the biggest joke I had ever heard.

“My appointment with the divorce lawyer is coming up, Mrs. Sinclair,” I sighed.

“Don’t give up yet, Mia!” Kate said in a determined tone, “There is something wrong with Lorelei. I am sure of it! She must be hiding some dark secrets…When I find out about that, I will break them up and help you come back to Adrian’s side!”

Dark secrets?

I let out a bitter laugh internally.

Maybe Lorelei had her skeleton in the closet. But even if I found aout about it, it wouldn’t change anything.

Adrian didn’t love me. That was the main issue.

“Thank you, Mrs. Sinclair. But I’d rather wish Adrian and Lorelei happy,” I said lowly.

After saying goodbye to the disappointed Kate, I left the café and headed towards the ironic skyscraper—The Sinclair Enterprise.

***

I still had my employer access. So I went up to his office on 27th floor directly and was right on time of our appointment with the lawyer.

Stepping out of the elevator, I was immediately welcomed by Ann the receptionist, who just stood up from the reception desk with a big smile:

“Welcome back Mia! Did you enjoy your break?”

I frowned.

Didn’t she hear about my divorce?

Before I got to answer, she shoved a big stack of files into my arms:

“These needs to get signed…And Development Department called to ask for a meeting with Alpha Adrian, please remind him of that…He also has a 7 o’clock dinner plan with an investor…Oh! And his lawyer is here already.”

“Ann, I’m not here to—”

She grabbed my arms looking relieved, “God I miss you in the office. What would we do without you?”

…Well, you are about to find out.

I had no choice but to walk into Adrian’s office carrying those files.

Adrian was making a phone call when I came in.

Golden sunshine depicted his body, behind him was a majestic view of the urban city.

I looked at him quietly, taking in every detail of his handsome face. He could easily make any woman fall in love with him at first sight.

Right now, he was speaking fluently in French, giving clear, direct orders to a manager in another branch.

I could still remember the shock on his face when he first learned that I didn’t speak any language other than English. But he didn’t scold me but instead hired a great language tutor for me.

After a year of hard training, I could finally catch up with him during international conferences.

He was a great mentor, focused, determined and harsh. He pushed me over my limit and made me a better person.

I couldn’t remember how many times I watched him standing in the spotlight and thought:

How lucky was I to be with a man like him?

I fell for a perfect man. Too bad he had a cold heart made of stone.

“Sit.”

He ended his call and walks over to me, casually loosening his tie and sleeves along the way.

He sat down across the table with his lawyer. The paperwork was already laid on the table.

I joined them without a word.

His lawyer had everything ready and instructed me through this process.

My mind was a blank.

I simply put down my signatures everywhere he wanted me to sign. Like a machine.

Adrian stayed quiet the whole time. I believed that he couldn’t wait to get rid of me.

Finally, his lawyer said, “Ms. Rivers, you signed a prenup. So now you can’t take away any properties or stock shares—”

“She can.” Adrian suddenly said.

I snapped my head up and found him staring at me with an unreadable look.

“Money, real estate, stocks…” he added to that, “You can ask for anything you want.”

I gripped my pen.

What was that?

Pity money?

“No, it’s fine,” I steadied my voice and turned to the lawyer, “I’ll stick to the prenup.”

Adrian slightly narrowed his eyes at me, “This is your last chance of social climbing. Don’t be an idiot and give that up.”

My anger flared.

What did he mean by that?

Was he implying that without his pity money I would be living a pathetic life as a loser?

How dared he look down at me like that!

“I will make my way up the social ladder with or without your help. So save your damn money and buy some pretty handbags for your mistress,” I said tartly.

He snorted, “Giving yourself too much credit is a bad habit, Mia. How do you intend to support yourself without the job that I provided you?”

“I have my ways.”

Seriously. Why did he still care? He was the one who abandoned me!

“What ways? Like seducing another man and have him pay your bill?” he asked sharply.

Where on earth did that come from?!

I was furious. Then I found him staring at my jacket sulkily, a jacket that I brought from Jace’s closet this morning because I didn’t have anything else to wear.

…He must think that I spent the night with someone last night.

I was going to tell him the truth. Yet on a second thought, I gave him a defiant smile instead and ran my fingers across jacket:

“He was wonderful…romantic, passionate and very, very generous. Actually can we wrap this up? He is still expecting me in the hotel room.”

Adrian jumped up from his chair.

“Watch yourself.” He gritted, “I don’t need people to know that my ex-wife is a slut.”

I got up to my feet as well, glaring back at him, “Then what about you? You had your mistress moved into your house even before our divorce is finalized. Jackass.”

The lawyer gasped as though he couldn’t believe that I just talked to Adrian like that.

Adrian’s face grew darker as he said, “I was cutting you some slacks…but looks like you want it the hard way.”

“Oh? What are you going to do?” I taunted.

He raised his chin, looking rather haughty:

“Apologize to Lorelei for breaking into our house and causing her mental and physical harm. Or you will be facing serious assault charges.”
