Catalina's POV
"Catalina! Guess who's here?!" Nana's voice rang through my room."Not now Nana," I said, pulling my sheets closer to me. I was still recovering from the humiliation I faced. I wasn't ready to meet the outside world yet but Nana wasn't having it. She opened my curtains, daylight streamed in and I quickly covered my face with the duvet.Nana walked around the room, placing stuff back in place. "It's your aunt and cousin. They are here to see you!"I sighed. "Have them wait for me, I'm not ready to see anyone yet.""Child, that's your aunt. She took care of you. She missed you so she came to see you. I can only imagine how worried she was for her to come all this way."I groaned. "I said I don't want to see anyone. Take them to their rooms or whatever. I'll go see them later." I waved her off, my face still under my sheets."Do whatever you want child. Just don't come crying to me when the regret sets in."I heard laughter a few minutes later. They were happy while I was sulking in my room because of some jerk. My workers would never take me seriously after that incident. They must feel I'm a joke. I grabbed a pillow, my face sank into it as I screamed. I relaxed a little, the heavy feeling that once sat in my chest was levitating.I continued my pity party for the next couple of hours. Taking a few bites from the food Nana sent up to me. She had someone bring it up to me, letting me know I annoyed her.The next morning, I was the first at the breakfast table. I planned on making it up to Nana so I made a little something for everyone so she didn't have to do anything. My aunt was the first to walk in."Cat, how are you feeling this morning? Paola said you were unwell?" The last part was meant to be a statement but it calls me out of questioning instead.I didn't have the heart to tell her I wasn't in the mood to see her so I went along with the lie, "yes, I think it's the change of environment but I'm much better now. How was your trip?""You've been here for a while now, you should be over that." She ignored my question, throwing one of her own."I wouldn't say that. You know how delicate my system has always been." She relaxed a little, falling for my little white lie.Mariana walked in, her bed hair and dropping eyes were evidence that she was just waking up. She stood by a seat on the table, her attention on us. "What are you two discussing?" She took a piece of bread, not waiting for others."I was wondering about your trip, how was it?"Filling the piece of bread with eggs, she responded, "It was exhausting. The old lady who sat beside me snored the entire journey. I felt like throwing her off the plane. She was so loud, it was irritating!""Maria, you are exaggerating. It wasn't that bad." Aunty scolded Mariana who pouted."Ma, don't call me Maria. You know I hate it." Her face flushed crimson as she took another bite. " We should have called Catalina, she would have arranged a flight for us, instead we went in coach!" Mariana was still going on about her bad trip. Aunty completely ignored her daughter, mumbling something to herself."You should have called, I would have made some arrangements. Maybe a hot pilot too." I winked at Mariana who gave me a disapproving stare and proceeded to completely ignore me. This was strange as the Mariana I know would have giggled, mentioning crude stuff that would make a nun choke in her seat."By the way, I'll be going into town. Might as well find something to occupy me with while in this awful town." She looked disgusted"Well, you shouldn't have come if you find the place so awful." She was prepared to retort to my statement and she did. "I didn't want to, Mama forced me." Aunty gave her a death glare, she immediately stopped talking.**Andre's POV"I'm heading into town, Felipe. I won't be back for a while."He walked through the front door, dropping a rake by the side. I shook my head disapprovingly, "I told you I was going to do that.""But it's my job, this is what I'm being paid to do. If your parents found out that I let you do my job, they could fire me." He blinked quickly, trying to get rid of the horrifying thought.I replied right away, trying to ease his mind. "My parents will never do that. You are family, and family sticks together, no matter what."He smiled from ear to ear. "You know exactly what to say. It's a wonder you aren't married yet. How are girls not fighting for you?" I knew this conversation was going to ride in that direction. Even my parents ask me that and I always had the same reply but this time, I said something different."You don't have to wait too long, I already found the woman I want." I grabbed a piece of apple from the table, munching straight into it."What?! Who is she? Is she from this town? When did you meet her?" I gave him a sheepish smile, pointed at the apple in my mouth, avoided his questions, and walked out the door."Do you need me to get you anything?!" I yelled from outside, getting on my already saddled horse. The reply I got was comical, "all I need is to see our daughter-in-law!" I simply shook my head in response as if he could see it.The town was peaceful. I rode towards the public clinic, ready to meet my long-time friend, Macario. He had lived in this tiny town all his life, committing himself to the public. I knew he earned nothing compared to what he would if he left this place. Fortunately, he was like that, he cared about the people in this town.Knocking on his office door, Macario called out, "Come in."I walked in, a grin already setting in on my cheeks."Andre! Is that you? What are you doing back in town?" We shared a brotherly hug. I was about to answer when I heard a toilet flush. Macario walked away from me, towards the toilet door. A lady walked out, handing him a container filled with a yellowish liquid. "Here you go, Doc." Her voice was angelic and her features looked familiar. I just couldn't place my finger on it.He quickly wore a glove, took the container, and placed it in a drawer under his desk. "The results should be out by next week. I'll have to take it to the nearest town to get it tested as we don't have the facilities here.""That's fine. I do have a question though." She gazed at him with hopeful eyes. He nodded, urging her to go on. "From the test, we conducted here, do you think I'm pregnant?" She asked, forcing the words out.I cleared my throat, finally making my presence known as it seemed the duo hadn't noticed me."Oh! I didn't know you have company. I'll be leaving then." She took her bag which I hadn't noticed from a nearby seat."Wait, let me introduce you. This is my long-time friend, Andre." He pointed at me. "And this is Mariana. She's visiting her family here."Catalina's POVA knock on my door pulled me out of my trance and I turned my gaze to the door. A worried Gilberto walked in. "Boss, I heard what happened. How I wish I had been here. That boy wouldn't have been able to lay a hand on you!" He was fuming as he walked quickly to my desk."It's fine Gilberto, you had to work," I astutely stated, picking up some paper works that had been calling for my attention."Elonzo and those good-for-nothings didn't do anything. I can punish them if you'd like Boss." He suggested with a hopeful gaze. I knew he liked violence but there'd be none on the ranch, at least not while I was here. "I said it's fine. I'll deal with it." My tone was firm"Okay, Boss." "And Gilberto," I called out, not looking at him once."The incident with the fire doesn't happen again," I warned, flipping the pages. Burning his house wasn't the punishment asked I for but Gilberto went ahead anyways."Yes, Boss. I promise it won't happen again."He was about to leave when he
Catalina's POV"You fool, how could you be so careless." I was by his side in an instant, helping him sit up with his back resting on the wall. It looked bad, the wound was slowly bleeding out and I could tell the venom was starting to spread as the veins around it blackened. He stopped moving around and sat still as he stared."Are you yelling at me?! At a time like this? I could be dying." He said in disbelief as he clutched his leg in pain. He winced and gasped. A hand ran through my hair as I felt helpless. A snake bite wasn't a part of the plan."You saw the snake, what type was it?" I asked. This earned me a thoughtful look from him before he gave up."I don't know, I didn't get a good look at it but the snakes found in these parts are poisonous." He was talking between breaths while I stood, torn and having a dilemma in my head."I don't know what to do! What do I do?" I ran a hand through my hair, I felt helpless and confused. I began biting my lips, an old habit of mine."Sta
Andre's POV"What?"She rolled her eyes. "To show my deepest apologies, I'll be helping you with reviving your ranch. Just tell me what you need help with." Her words came out like it was definite and I had no choice.I stared at the lady in front of me. She was different from the woman I met back then. Still cold but crazy has been added to the list. There's no way she expected me to take her up on her offer. "What are you apologizing for? You didn't do anything."An eye roll was what I got in response. "I didn't but I have come to realize I've not been civil and I'll like to make up for it." My gaze intensified on her features but her confidence didn't waver."It's good that you want to make amends but I think fixing the fence will be enough."She wasn't having it, she let out a heavy breath in frustration. "I don't think you understand. I want to help you. I don't know why you'd be bothered about that ranch but it must mean something to you if you aren't going to sell and I'll like
Andre's POV"From your tone and expression, I guess that's a bad thing?" It was meant to be a statement but it came out as a question."My mom is going to kill me! I can't be pregnant. I don't have a husband or a job, I could never raise a child on my own." She dropped to the foot of my bed, the test results tightly squeezed in her hand. I didn't know what to say so I just let her rant on. "My dad walked out on us when he found out my mom was pregnant with me and I vowed never to let that happen to me and now look! I'm screwed." She said as she held her head tightly, her finger digging deep into her scalp. She had gone quiet suddenly in the poorly lit room. A poorly lit lamp was at the far end of the room so I couldn't see her face but loud sobs soon filled the room and her body shook with each one. I move with hesitation over to her to comfort her. My arms awkwardly laid on her shoulders and just when I was about to utter a word, she hugged me tightly. I was beyond stunned. We were s
Catalina's POV"How was your talk with Andres?" I nearly jumped out of my skin. Nana stood by the stairs with a cleaning brush in her hand. She was humming a tune as she cleaned the railings.I sighed, walking closer to her as my hands stayed on my hips. "Not good. He turned me down." "Well, you can't blame him." She shrugged, returning to her cleaning."What do you mean? You wouldn't trust me if I offered you a hand?" Shock was written on my face as Nana laughed."I would because I know you and I trust you but he doesn't and you haven't done anything to make him think otherwise." She was right but that didn't make it hurt any less. Right there, Mariana walked in with distress written all over her face. The color drained off her and she just looked worried. Walking right passed me, she aimed for the stairs. Her usual made-up face was swollen with dried tears all over. Her brunette hair which was perfectly straightened earlier stuck out in all directions."What's wrong Mariana?" Nana
Andre's POVI was discharged the next day with strict orders from Marcario to take care of myself. Catalina picked me and we shared an awkward silence on the way home. The silence was so intense I glanced at her a few times to check if she felt it too. She didn't give off any emotions and just paid attention to her driving. I gave up a few minutes into the ride and made conversation. "The weather seems nice."While waiting for her response, all I got was a side glance. I was going to say something when she said, "it's nice, the sun is out. It would be good for a picnic." I didn't know what to reply to that so I just nodded. We spent a few minutes in another yet awkward silence."So how was your night?"She was talking to me without me starting it first. This was new, and I liked it. "It was good, I slept well even with a blaring alarm in the room."She turned to me, confusion written all over her face. "What?""Marcario snores," I replied with a knowing look"Right, you mentioned it l
Andre's POVAs I expected, Catalina was right on time. She caught me off-guard as I was in the shower and Felipe let her into my room. She stopped by to check the progress of the work that hadn't even started yet."They aren't here yet?" She said, referring to the construction workers. She looked through the foggy glass in the bathroom, her eyes ran frantically, searching for me."No, they aren't. It's still early, they should be here soon. Please leave now," I said in one breathe as I tried controlling my thoughts. Showering soon became the farthest thing on my mind."I wasn't planning on staying, don't kid yourself." She turned, now facing my bedroom door. I took the opportunity to grab a towel, wrapping it around my waist and then I stepped out.Noticing how quiet the room had gotten, she turned to me. "Aren't you going to get dressed? You don't plan on going out like that, do you?" She said as her eyes gave me a look over.I smirked, taking a step closer. "Does it bother you?" Thi
Catalina's POVI tried avoiding Andre all day, it wasn't easy. He tried making conversation even when I made it clear that I wasn't in the mood to talk to him. He was stubborn and persistent, only fueling my irritation. The day finally ended and I slipped away without anyone noticing. I was hot and frustrated from the events that occurred earlier. My mind kept wandering back and forth and I couldn't seem to stop thinking about him. I couldn't concentrate to get any work done. He was a fire while I was the moth. Sighing, I kept my documents in my top drawer. There was no point, I finally accepted that I wasn't going to get any work done. I leaned back in my seat for a minute and stared right at the ceiling, the incident of this morning haunted me. His wet body flashed through my mind and I pulled at my hair in frustration. I was going crazy but then again, the last time I met a man was months ago.His wet black hair begged me to run my fingers through them and I was tempted to move th
Catalina's POV"Don't go soft on me," I warned. "Give me everything you've got." My back lay bare on the soft grass. I felt every hair on my skin interacting with his, we couldn't have been closer. He pushed my hair away from my face, leaving the soft tendrils on the grass. I never did stuff like this in my past relationships, I always played it safe, never wanting to get caught in a compromising situation. The bed was always the option and in a way, the relationships ended because of me but with him, I turn wanton, crazy, and addicted. All the things I never was. My previous partners would kill to see me like this, letting the wild part of me out. A side they begged to come out but never got to see. A side of me that was too shy to come out, until now. The repressed emotions that I buried were coming out tonight."I just have to ask, do you want this? I don't think I'll be able to stop if we go further." His icy blue eyes were serious as he tried putting some space between us. Inst
Catalina's POVA picnic was laid out on the grass with Andre's fine ass making contact with the napkin. He hadn't noticed me and kept checking his watch. Slowly, I walked up to him but stumbled over a rock I didn't sight earlier. I swore out loud, my idea to sneak up on him long gone.He frowned when he turned to me. "Are you alright?" He got up. "What took you so long?""I'm sorry, I couldn't decide what to wear." I apologized as I checked my foot for bruises, my hands in my hair as I tried straightening the knots the wind caused. The brunette strands bumped with my fingers. He smirked, walking closer to me. "You are that excited, huh?" He said, commenting, referring to the mop on my hair that was a result of the wind with how fast I was driving."Don't kid yourself. It's windy and I knew it was going to be chilly so I stayed back to find something. I've been here for a while but I'm not done unpacking." I part lied easily and he fell for it."Come, I want to show you something." He
Catalina's POV"I'll agree to it." I spun to find Andre close to me. He had taken off his shirt earlier to work on the roof of the shed. His hardened man nipples gazed back at me. His chest rose and fell rapidly with sweat sliding from them."I didn't say anything." I voiced out, confusion evident in my voice. "Remember what we talked about last night?" He tried jogging my memory."Yes." I drew my words. "But what has that got to do with anything? And I thought we agreed never to speak of that." I whispered the last sentence as my eyes dashed around but everyone was busy with something else. My tensed shoulders visibly relaxed and my brows furrowed in annoyance as I hit his chest. The hard wall had my insides turning into mush. I could feel the colors coming to my cheeks."I know but I thought it through and I guess I want this as much as you do." He rubbed his chest which had turned red from my slap. A tiny part of me felt sorry but I was more interested in the conversation we were
Andre's POVI stood in the same spot we once stood some days back. The lights from the town shone brightly, illuminating the empty streets. All doors were unlocked as everyone in the town was trustworthy. We hadn't had a case of theft in decades and we continued to live peacefully. There were hardly ever tourists let alone movers which made Catalina's move here the talk of the town and her harsh personality was the cherry on top.Speaking of the devil, she walked up to me, her green truck just a walking distance from us. There was something different this time around and it was easy to spot. A huge smile sat on her lips, it was so different from what I was used to. The few times I saw her this happy, she wore a light smile but this was a full-blown grin."Hey." She touched my arm lightly, the smile still sat there like a sun on a sunny day. It turned my insides into bubbles."What's with the grin? You look happy." I pointed out, returning her smile with the same enthusiasm. With a non
Catalina's POVTrying to slip past the front door unnoticed, a voice called out to me. "Where have you been?" Auntie was all over me in minutes, making a fuss out of nothing. "We were so worried. Paola and I couldn't sleep.""I'm sorry, Aunt but I had to take care of an emergency and couldn't return home last night." I lied, my voice remained emotionless, not giving anything away."Well, you should have called! We were worried sick," she wailed, her fingers running over me again, checking for a bruise but she came up empty-handed. "I'm fine, how is Mariana? Is she still asleep?" I was heading to her room, trying to get away from the conversation when Nana stopped me. I was met with her teary eyes. Her usual cheerful face was solemn as she held my cheeks in her hands."Please don't start Nana. I'm okay." I was getting tired of the endless reassurance I was giving to them."Mariana isn't in her room as she left already. You just missed her." I turned back to my aunt who just like Paola
Andre's POVHer words played repeatedly in my head like a broken stereo. I didn't know my words and actions affected her in that way. She always had that bored look going on so I never thought much about it.I sat on the couch adjacent to my bed where she lay, her lips twitching ever so lightly with her hands pushing strands of hair from her face every few minutes. Her cinnamon eyes stayed hidden from me as her eyelids stayed close. She tousled her hair repeatedly and eventually gave up. Her dark eyes opened and I came into her line of view. She stared at me for a minute, blinking a few times to check if I was her imagination. She quickly took a survey of the room, her eyes returning to me every few seconds. "What are you doing here?" She asked the question I was expecting."You mean what at you doing in my room?" I rephrased her question, a smirk laying on my lips when she realized I was right."What am I doing here?" She held her head in her hands, her fingers moved to itch a spot.
Andre's POV"You already know I'm an only child, what else would you like to know about me?" We lay on the tiny blanket, gazing at the night sky that was painted with stars that had started twinkling out of their hiding place. The crescent moon stared down at us, its void face reminded me of the night breeze which ran cold, embracing our exposed skin. Leaving kisses in form of goosebumps. Half of our bodies lay on the hard ground but we didn't mind as the croaking of frogs and chirping of crickets filled the air, engulfing the comfortable silence. "How about why you guys moved to the city? You seem to love it here and everyone seems to love you too so why did you leave?" She asked, her gaze falling on me. I took a glance at her, returning my eyes to the night sky. "We did love it here, sadly it wasn't enough to run the place. Dad somehow made a bad investment, I'm not sure of the details as he doesn't like talking about it but it ended badly so we had to sell almost everything we ow
Andre's POVThe day rolled by painfully slowly and I was eager to see her again. She didn't show up at the ranch earlier due to some meeting she had. I found out because I crawled over to her ranch. I was worried but lucky, she wasn't home to see my frantic state. I meet Paola instead, her nanny who looked after us some years ago. She looked so different now, her hair turned whitish from the last time I saw her, and wrinkles danced on her soft features and hands. Her nose turned slightly crooked and her lips had thinned out. In contrast to all these, her eyes never lost their sparkle."Is Catalina here? She didn't show up today? Is everything okay?" I asked her while trying my possible best to hide my worried expression."She drove to town and said she had something to take care of. She should be back soon. Why do you ask?" She inquired, her eyes glinting with mischief as she pulled the bowl in her hand closer to herself.I blinked as my eyes widened, turning into a deer caught in he
Andre's POVThe phone rang loudly as I walked over to pick it up. "Hello?"A soft greeting came in. It was Catalina. I looked outside to find the night sky darkened with little illumination from the stars. The crickets crooked in the fields as the rodents ran freely. A particular rodent caught my eye as it tried crawling through my window into my room. Quickly, I locked it as my ears tune in to hear her voice which suddenly turned quieter."I wanted to ask something of you if that's okay?" Her voice was meek like my response could break her and have her in tears."What's wrong?" I replied with a question."I'm currently at your door," she chuckled before continuing. "Could you come to get the door? I'm freezing, it's really cold." Her teeth rattled against each other, the sound reaching me through the phone.I dashed towards my windows, tearing the blinds open, and true to her words, there she stood, shivering in the bitter cold. Her arms wrapped around her torso as the wind blew her
