Monica reached for her phone, which she had left in another room with the files. She unlocked it and discovered nearly ten missed calls and two texts. She read the texts as she slid the notification bar down.

"Ella, this is Ethen. I chose to leave this message because you are not answering the call. I need to speak with you about something really serious, which I cannot do over the phone. Meet me at 5 p.m. at West Side Cafe.

A single arched eyebrow expressed her confusion as she read the second text, “I am not bringing Diana along."

Monica sighed deeply as she sat in a chair, sensing in some way that her history was surfacing in the present. Her face became aware of what was happening; although she wished to escape her past, it appeared that those times had returned to her. She was visibly depressed as she ran her fingers through her hair.

Monica took another big breath and made the decision to meet Ethen.
