Ciara was taken aback. It suddenly hit her that today was Samuel and Linda’s engagement party. She had heard Colt mention it the day before when she returned the money to the Luscious family.

Linda, dressed in a stunning wedding gown with a diamond necklace and earrings, and a flower crown, looked like an angel. Compared to her, Ciara felt out of place. She was dressed in a white blouse covered in cinder block dust and a black skirt marred with scratches and lint.

Ciara wondered why Samuel had invited her, making her feel foolish.

A wave of anger surged within her. She faced Linda with a calm yet sad expression. “What am I doing here?”

“You!” Linda snapped. “Ciara Summers, how dare you show up like this! Today is my engagement party with Samuel! You’re dirty and limping. Did you come here to ruin everything? Get out!”

Linda’s engagement party was important to her. Samuel wasn’t fond of attention, so the party was kept low-key. The Luscious family found out only after her father asked

The woman before Samuel had shed her worn pencil skirt and white blouse, transforming into a striking figure in a wedding dress and crystal heels. The heels, standing ten centimeters high, accentuated her already long legs and added to her imposing height of 170 centimeters. Although she had changed clothes, she hadn’t yet applied any makeup.Without makeup, Ciara’s natural, aloof beauty was striking. The wedding dress only enhanced her effortless elegance, as if she was untouched by the world. She met Samuel’s gaze with a blend of innocence and detachment, remaining silent.Samuel’s irritation flared unexpectedly. “What were you doing this morning? Do you realize you almost ruined my event?”Ciara responded with a direct question, “Is this our wedding?” She added quietly to herself, “I don’t need this wedding, and neither do you. You’re marrying Linda in two months. Holding this wedding now, in front of the Luscious family, would only make me their enemy.”Samuel’s frustration grew a

Even though Ciara wanted to feel terrible, the joy on Mary’s face was enough to quell whatever ill feeling she might be getting. They would share a few light drinks before Mary returns to the hospital.“Don’t think all is well now,” Samuel whispered into Ciara’s ear. His voice was very cold, and he probably mistook the smile on Ciara’s face for acceptance; she was merely trying to sustain Mary’s happiness.Ciara’s comeback retort was just on the tip of her finger when Mary voice filtered to her ears. “Come darling, let us take some pictures. It might be the first and only family picture we would have.”“Mom, please do not sound that way,” Ciara started to say, but Mary waved her off.Ciara and Samuel stood behind Mary. They did not even realize that Mary had hired a private photographer. When Mary saw the surprise on both the faces of Ciara and Mary, she giggled like a happy teenager and said, “You did not think that a wedding would hold between you two and I would allow this moment b

“Her vitals are good. Her pulse is responding. She will be fine.”Ciara heard the voice of someone faintly. She could feel warm hands on her skin; neck, eyes, chest, stomach. Even in her subconscious, she could feel the piercing ray of light deep inside her eyes. The last thing she could remember was talking to Mary…at her own wedding, right?Ciara stirred awake and when she opened her eyes, the blurry vision of a doctor and a nurse stood hovering above her.“Oh, she wakes,” the doctor said, his voice no longer a distant sound.Ciara swept the room with her eyes, taking in everything, and then it dawned on her that she was in a hospital. She was under examination. That realization made every unconsciousness disappear. She remembered what was at stake now.“How long have I been out?” Ciara asked the doctor who smiled at her along with the nurse.“For just a couple of hours, and you gave us quite a scare,” he chuckled lightly.“Us?” Ciara asked dreadfully, her fear creeping in on her.“

Thankfully, the doctor had obliged Ciara and hadn’t told Samuel more than he needed to know. Few hours after that, Ciara was discharged, but she went straight to Mary’s ward.“You are here,” Mary said happily the moment Ciara entered her ward. Even though Mary’s nurse had told Ciara that Mary was awake, she had expected the woman to be resting.“Yes, I am,” Ciara said and settled beside Mary.“The doctor said something about an allergy, and I am just grateful that it wasn’t more than that,” Mary said genuinely. Ciara wanted to ask her if she had taken any drink at all, but it might arouse suspicion and even make Mary uneasy, which isn’t what she needs at the moment. There was no other way for Ciara to know, because asking Samuel wasn’t even an option, so in as much as she hated it, she would just have to let it go, the most important thing being that she did not lose the baby. Samuel entered the ward, and Ciara concluded that the man had a problem with knocking. Instead of berating

Ciara hadn’t seen or heard from Samuel since she eavesdropped on his call. Not that she was eager to see him, but the earlier she saw him, the better for her, because then she would be able make him cancel trip that she knew quite well neither of them was going to enjoy. “Would you like me to serve you some light snacks?” Aunt Quinton asked as Ciara paced about the living room of the luxurious duplex. Ciara shook her head almost immediately. “No, Aunt Quinton, I think I will pass,” Ciara answered flippantly because her mind was stationed elsewhere and her gazed firmly fixed on the door as though willing Samuel to stroll into the apartment. Then Aunt Quinton left.As if on cue, the door opened and Ciara looked on with anticipation, barely resisting the urge to rush over to the door and grab Samuel for showing up right on time. Kingston entered into the living room instead, making Ciara’s shoulders slump in disappointment.“Miss Summers,” Kingston started to say but then caught himsel

The hairs on Ciara’s neck stood up. She could feel dread sweeping through her entire nervous system, and Ciara knew even without turning that she was in danger. The breath of this person landed at the back of her neck, causing her chills.Carefully, Ciara dreaded to turn and look at whoever he was, to at least catch his face before he did whatever he wanted to do with her, but just then, she heard a beeping sound, and Samuel’s voice filtered to her ears.“You may come in,” and the moment he said that, the gate swung open, granting her access into the penthouse. Ciara turned, but the person had disappeared. It felt unreal, but she knew deep down that someone stood a few inches away from her barely a second ago otherwise she would not have felt his breath on her skin when he talked, and also, the creepy way he called her name. Her full name.Ciara hurried into the penthouse, and the gate shut firmly behind her. She felt safe now, but still, she could not shake off the feeling that the w

Linda paced about impatiently and furiously. He was taking too long to get back to her. He was taking too long to show up, and Linda was almost bursting with anticipation. The sound of Linda’ heels clicked on the marble floor, and if it was possible for them to bore holes with the way she was pacing back and forth, the entire room would be perforated by now. She drummed her long manicured nails together, waiting. This bastard had better had a good explanation for this delay, Linda said to herself. He was the best at what he does, so why on earth was she so worked up. Linda’s phone beeped. She rushed over to it, thinking that it was either him or Samuel, and frankly, right now, she would not mind either of those. It has been difficult getting through to Samuel for hours now, and after their last argument, he had completely stopped taking her calls. She needed to do something. Even if someone was to win her over anything, especially a man, it should not be Ciara Summers. She would rathe

Ciara walked beside Samuel as they followed their tour guide to their hotel. It was a luxurious hotel, one that spoke of wealth and class, and Ciara could not be more awed, but in as much as she wanted to take in the beauty of the place, she could not shake off the fact that she left an unfinished business back home.“Happy honeymooning,” the young lady grinned at Ciara and Samuel as she led them to their hotel room. “You could not have picked a better place,” she added cheerily.Neither Ciara nor Samuel responded to her. When they got to their room, she handed their door card to them, congratulated them once again and left them to go into their room. Samuel placed the card on the door and it buzzed open. The moment they stepped in, Ciara’s breath was caught in her throat by the sight that greeted her. It was not the magnificence of the room that took her breath away, it was the decoration on the spacious king-sized bed. On it were rose petals shaped in the form of love while scented

Linda had locked herself up in the room ever since the scandal. She could not even bring herself to go anywhere as close as downstairs, because she did not even want to deal with curious stares from the employees. Not only had she been skipping meals, she had also been avoiding her parents, especially her mother, because she could not deal with any firm of judgments right now.In truth, the Luscious mansion had been somewhat gravely quiet ever since. Linda was a nervous wreck as she called Hayes. She had been calling him almost every ten minutes, but she could not bring herself to stop.“Anything else?” Linda asked the moment the call connected.“No, Linda. He has been in the main house for hours now. Maybe he has called it a day, and I think I should too,” Hayes said, sounding tired.“Don’t you dare move from there!” Linda barked. They had missed Samuel for days, unable to trail him, because he had gone to hide somewhere unknown, and Linda had quickly told Hayes where to find Samu

Samuel got into the main house and flopped on the couch, extremely tired. From what he could see outside, all his domestic staff were in good shape and doing their jobs well, so Samuel closed his eyes and tried to take in as much rest as possible. He did not want to think much about anything for now; he just wanted to rest. If he could stay here for a couple of hours, and even take a nap in the process, he would be relieved, but shutting his brain off completely was not something he could do, considering all that was going on at the moment. He would need to take extra caution dealing with Colt henceforth, but Samuel could not tell if Kingston was now strong enough to get back to work. He knew he should have called Doctor Pedro to ask about Kingston’s improvement, but he had been swamped with things. Anyway, now that he was here, he would ask him personally. Samuel opened his eyes and looked around, and everywhere seemed quiet. Samuel was now used to catching Quinton standing by the

Samuel drove home, his mind muddled up in thoughts. It was a card he played on Colt, and like a mirror, he saw right through Colt.More than ever before, and for the very first time, Samuel was certain that there was something amiss. Colt could not even answer the last question he asked him. Samuel thought of going to the penthouse, but he changed his mind last minute. He hadn’t been to the main house in days now, and since he was still in charge of the Fury house and wealth, he needed to go there and ensure that everything was okay.Changing directions now, his mind went back to Colt Luscious. Samuel knew what he hadn’t known for years now; he was also a victim of Colt and Ruby’s games, but he could not exactly put the points together. All along, he had been worrying so much about understanding what was going on in Ciara’s life and trying to piece together bits and pieces of the things he knew, and he had no idea that he might also need to piece them together. Now, Samuel was begin

Samuel and Colt stared at each other for the longest time, each refusing to break the ice, and equally refusing to be less deadly in their stares.“You are ungrateful,” Colt said angrily.“How so?” Samuel asked, refusing to back down.If it was before, he would allow Colt Luscious to guilt-trip him into feeling like he needed to set things right.“I did everything for you, Samuel Fury. I showed up for you when no one else would. I became your benefactor when there was no one to even help you. I aided you to get back the Fury name and wealth, and what did I get in return?” Colt said, his eyes spitting fire.“Say how I fucking betrayed you, Colt, and stop beating around the bush,” Samuel stated bluntly, almost cutting Colt off. Colt ground his teeth in annoyance, and was also surprised at Samuel’s disrespectful tone.“You got my daughter pregnant!” Colt barked.“Did I?” Samuel asked, looking at Colt square in the eyes challengingly. “How am I certain that your daughter was the one I ha

And to think he had actually believed Linda when she said that Ciara had come into their home to steal. Now, things were beginning to click together, piece by piece. How on earth did someone go through all that? A woman for that matter? “Thank goodness I did not end up marrying Linda,” Samuel said quietly. When he had arrived at the venue and had walked up to the altar, and had looked at Linda in that dress, he had just known that he could not go through with the wedding. Even if it was some sort of an arrangement, and nothing based on love, he just couldn’t. Even though he had wanted to marry Linda to get to know what was really going on, he just couldn’t, and now, he was grateful

There was a deafening silence after Ciara said Linda Luscious.Samuel felt as though he was hearing differently. Yes, he knew that he suspected something was off, but he had no idea, and now, he was even more confused.“Linda Luscious?” Samuel asked, wanting to be certain he was hearing rightly.“You asked who Rudge was referring to when he said ‘she’, right?” Ciara asked. Now, they were both seated on Ciara’s bed, quietly. It was the first time they would be having a conversation in this manner. All the times they had a conversation, they had always been talking in high tones, and throwing unpleasant words to each other.“Was she the same person the previous time when Rudge had contacted you and struck a deal? Samuel asked calmly. He could not even bring himself to shout. In fact, he was even struggling to ask questions that were not silly, because while they talked and he listened to Ciara, he was still trying to clear out his confusion.“Yes,” Ciara answered soberly.“How on earth d

Lori got up from bed, feeling deep pains in her lower back. She groaned in pain, but she was not about to give up. In fact, she was beginning to get sore just being there. It was a difficult attempt, but Lori struggled and got out of bed. Then she staggered and made her way to the living room. She kept groaning in excruciating pain, and when she was finally able to get to a seat, she sat down, but then again, she could not even sigh in relief, because sitting down was causing her more pain than she anticipated. The door opened and Martin entered, holding a sack of potatoes. The moment he saw Lori sitting down, he dropped the sack and ran over to her, as the potatoes spilled out of the bag and ran in different directions.“Hey, how did you get out here?” Martin said, deeply worried. He knelt in front of Lori, held her hand and watched her closely. “Let me take the call,” Samuel said firmly, stretching his hand to collect the phone from Ciara. “Let me handle it.”Ciara would have given the phone to Samuel to “handle” it like he said, but she could still vividly recall what happened the last time she had allowed Samuel to handle her business with Rudge. If he was calling again, it meant something, and for all Ciara knew, she could still have a shot at getting to know what truly happened that fateful day.“No,” Ciara said firmly also.“What?” Samuel seemed amazed by Ciara’s firm rejection. Although why he was surprised, Ciara could not tell. He should be used to her constantly doing the exact opposite of what he wanted her to do by now.“I am not letting you handle this, Samuel,” Ciara stated. The phone was still ringing.“For all you know, Ciara, this guy could just want to get money from you! She saw that Samuel had flown on one of the couches. “Oh my gosh, did I hurt you?” Ciara asked, looking for where the bullet might have hit Samuel.“Get off me!” Samuel said and pushed Ciara far away from him. Ciara was still worried. From her position, she tried to look at Samuel to check for signs of blood, but she wasn’t seeing any. Then she looked around the living room and saw the bullet beside the door. She sighed in relief; thank goodness that she hadn’t mistakenly shot
