*TW: Mention of a battle*
Gemma
She had been held in the pack for a little over a month now. Summer was just starting to take over from spring and she had started things that would make her escape easier.
She’d started opening and closing her bedroom window at intervals to get her guards used to the sound of her window opening without her trying to get out. From what she’d managed to study on the unblocked internet about wolves, her scent would be surrounding the area with the wind blowing into her room. She studied on wolves and dogs, since she didn’t know how trustworthy the information on werewolves were.
She had also collected water bottles, two contained water, one that she would drink from and one that she could douse herself in to minimize her scent for a while. The other contained bleach that she had collected from the small amounts she could collect from soaking the bleach wipes and then squeezing out all the fluids.
She also had a small stash of non-perishable snacks that she was keeping in her closet along with everything else she would need. She had gone through her handbag and was grateful that she was kind of a pack rat with all the useful things she had found.
When the opportunity came, she would be able to escape. She had managed to keep the alpha’s son at bay, though he came every week to spend time with her so she would be less inclined to flinch whenever he came close. She had been unable to stop that reaction since she always remembered how unexpectedly he had slapped her out of nowhere.
She was also pretty fit now with the amount of running she did. She could do five miles without a struggle now. Of course, she also studied ways to escape blood hounds and did other random searches in between, in case they managed to figure out how to check her research history. They might have kidnapped an IT specialist since they seemed to have gotten away with kidnapping her.
She wanted to find her way out of this pack, soon. She’d done more than enough to help their pack. They had three new businesses, the bar bringing in the most at this point, judging from the financials she had to go through. Some of the income was confusing though. She didn’t know what it could be.
Suddenly, a bone chilling howl broke into the late afternoon air, startling her. She went to her window and noticed her guard panic. That wasn’t good; what could make a werewolf panic? Her question had gone unanswered until her guard suddenly rushed away from the window and then she heard the noise.
It sounded like a dog fight...well, how she guessed a dog fight would sound like, but at a much larger scale. The growling, painful whining and terrified screams were deafening. It was terrifying, were they being attacked?
The alpha son appeared at her door and pulled her out of sight, closing the window and locking it from the inside. Then he looked at her with worry. “I need you to stay here, stay out of sight. We are under attack.”
He only waited long enough for her mute nod, before he disappeared, locking her door again. Gemma considered trying to escape at this moment, but decided that she would rather not end up in the middle of an attack, so she waited, listening to the noise levels rise as the attackers seemed to gain some ground.
Then the screams of terror inside the house and the growling increased. Gemma did the childish thing by sitting quietly in the bottom of her closet with the door closed. She felt so far out of depth that she didn’t even know what she could do to defend herself. The only things close to weapons were the small weights she’d been using to get stronger.
Finally, there was silence; an eerie silence, only broken by footsteps that sounded like boots going back and forth in the hallways. She waited quietly, trying not to make a sound if it meant she would not be discovered, since she had the eerie feeling that the attackers were now in the pack house. She fell asleep in the closet, waiting for her nightmare to be over.
Gemma was startled awake by the alarm and she rushed out of the closet to silence it before someone found out about her; she just hoped that no one had been close enough to hear it. Opening her window, she saw no guard placed there and she considered making her escape. She closed her window again, just to be safe.
Trying to collect her thoughts, she took a shower and then walked out of the bathroom in a towel, to find some clothes that would work for her escape plan. She only had sneakers, but she would need clothes that allowed her to move easily.
She squealed in terror when she suddenly found a strange wolf leaning against the doorway of her apartment. He was dressed like he had some military work and he looked her up and down with a raised eyebrow; yes, he was definitely a wolf with his predatory way of looking at her.
Meanwhile Gemma was still trying to get her heart back into her chest and calm down. “C-can I h-help you?” She squeaked in a small voice. She knew he was a wolf; he had the same power and height around him, the same predatory look and movements, the same intense stare that looked for weaknesses.
“Commander wants to see you.” He answered casually.
“C-can I get dressed?”
He rolled his eyes. “I’ll wait for you outside, you have five minutes.”
Once he closed the door, she rushed to put on clothes. Apparently, she took too long because he opened the door even before she could put shoes on; thankfully she had pulled all her clothes on before she had attempted to find her shoes otherwise he would have caught her half-dressed.
He grabbed her upper arm in a firm but gentle grip and then half dragged her down the hallway towards the office she now knew was the Alpha’s. The house that had been impeccable before was now in shambles. Blood covered the walls in certain areas; furniture lay mangled and broken on the floor, there were even claw marks that had damaged the walls and doors. It looked like she had made the right decision to remain hidden during the battle; because she was sure she would not have survived if she had ended up in the middle of a battle.
Wolves in military uniform were clearing up broken furniture and going about their day like they were in the middle of a military headquarters. Soon, they found themselves in front of the alpha’s office door.
The guy holding her like some disobedient child knocked firmly and a voice from inside told them to enter. The moment she set foot inside the office, the wolf standing near the window turned and growled; his eyes dark and menacing.
Gemma automatically stepped back in fear and bumped into the soldier behind her. “Leave.” The commander in front of her ordered and she found herself alone with him.
Was he intimidating? Yes. Did she feel as scared of him as she was of the alpha’s son? Strangely, no. Was he beyond lickably handsome? “Yes – wait, no! Bad, Gemma! This was not the time to find her will to live with a mean looking wolf.
Men, good; wolves, bad!
“I see from the alpha’s records that you are his secretary. Why would he hire a human?”
She swallowed hard at the lump in her throat. “Kidnapped, he kidnapped me.”
“His records show he paid you a salary.” He answered with a confused frown, while he paced in the ever proud military rhythm towards the desk and glanced at the computer screen. Man, that was hot!
No, Gemma, focus!
“According to the Alpha’s son it was to make me look like a runaway human and not a missing person.” She answered.
“But you had full access to their books and financial decisions.” He frowned with confusion. His dark hair was a mess, as if he’d pushed his fingers through it and there were dark circles under his hazel eyes that made it look like he pulled an all-nighter.
She also realized that he was apparently much more intellectual than anyone in this pack had been. He had already gone into the computer system and checked her usage of the programs. Gemma wondered if he had already gone through her search history or if she still had time to delete it all.
“They also had me locked in my apartment without any chance at walking outside.” She answered.
“I see.” The muscle in his strong jaw was jumping while he stared at her with an unreadable expression.
Man, this guy was hot; she just wanted to lick the pecks she could see through his tight shirt.
Get it together, Gemma! He’s the enemy until proven otherwise.
“So, you wanted to see me so urgently, because?” She asked, glancing down at her bare feet to prove her point.
“Oh, yes. I can’t seem to find out what this income from their bar is for.”
“Is it the amount of three thousand every two weeks?” She asked and at his nod, she shrugged. “I couldn’t figure it out either. None of the stock could be sold for that amount, not even in bulk. All I could think is it was for something that was never loaded as stock.”
“Fuck...” He growled with annoyance.
“I suggest you check his drawers or book shelf. They weren’t too smart with computers; I ended up doing most of it. He would probably keep notes written down somewhere. They didn’t think highly of intelligence in this pack.”
“Yeah, that much was obvious.” He admitted, absently. Then he met her gaze. “Now, about the other thing...”
“The other thing?” She asked in confusion. “You mean my captivity? I don’t suppose you’d let me go with a heartfelt promise that I don’t tell anyone about werewolves?”
He shook his head without breaking his intense stare in her eyes that were making her both uncomfortable and very hot. “I can’t let you go, you’re my mate. But I have no intention of acting on it with a human, though I can’t let you go and weaken myself at this point. So…” At that his eyes glazed over for a moment; what just happened to his eyes...
Gemma was still trying to figure out what his words meant when her arm was suddenly caught by the soldier from before and she was marched back to her previous prison.
“Your breakfast will be here, shortly.” The soldier informed her with a sad look on his face before he left her alone and locked the door.
Damn! She was still a prisoner, but she now had a different captor. Well, that was a wrench in the works if ever she saw one. Gemma paced back and forth in front of her bed, she assumed he didn’t expect her to still do office work. That could be useful in the long run.
Gemma quickly rushed to her office and sent through the safety check to her attorney. She needed to keep her finances running so she could escape. She had absolutely no intention of hanging around and waiting for the next batch of wolves to attack and take over. These wolves were no better than barbarians. She took the time to clear her search history and backed up all the important info she had on her computer onto a thumb drive she always kept in her handbag. Then she wiped the computer.
She now just had to find a plan of action she could work with. So she sat down and planned it out. She had the feeling she had to be smarter with these wolves, so she did not do any searches on the computer; she did it on her phone that she had successfully hidden from the pack, sitting on her bed in case they had discovered the camera system in her office.
Then she made a list of things that would buy her some time if she were being tracked or followed. She also looked up a map of the area and saved it on her phone. She quickly dumped her phone in her bag and pretended to be shuffling around for socks when she heard the lock on the door.
It was the soldier from before with a tray of food. “I didn’t know if you like coffee or tea, so I brought both. I also filled your tray with everything on offer.” He smiled at her.
“Thanks.” She said sourly.
“Look, don’t take the Commander’s attitude personally, he didn’t expect this or planned for it. He’s all about planning things out.”
“Well, he could’ve let me go.” She retorted as she grabbed the nearest pair of socks and slumped onto the bed.
“Sweetheart, you’re right dab in the middle of a bunch of packs. He cares enough not to just throw you out and leave you to their tender mercies, which, if we’re being honest, is not very tender.”
“So it gets worse than being slapped for not agreeing to work for your captors and then have to deal with the same wolf attempting to get in your pants for a month straight?”
“Wait, they did that to you?” He asked with shocked horror.
“Yeah, I should probably be grateful he didn’t lose patience and rape me, considering what you just said.” She snarled at the soldier with annoyance. “Should I worry about that with you?”
Yes, she was being a little salty, but she was entitled to be after her experience with wolves. She had applied for a job and got kidnapped, assaulted and attempted coercion into sex. And now she was still a captive with a new wolf in charge. And she knew what men wanted after a war; she’d read what happened to women when a battle was over.
The soldier looked insulted. “The commander would never allow that! You’re under his protection.”
“Forgive me if that doesn’t mean anything to me.” She snapped with annoyance as she took the tray out of his hand and left him standing in the doorway as she went into her office to get away from him.
Commander Dale Cleaver This mission was supposed to be a simple one. Track the money for the kidnapped she-wolves back to the root and then tear the root out. It had been an uncommonly easy route to follow. Surely the pack behind it couldn’t be that stupid? Apparently, they were. They didn’t have proper border control, nor did they have early warning of the attack. It had been surprisingly easy to take the pack house, so much so that he had expected to find an ambush inside. But there was nothing besides a greedy alpha and Luna and a muscle head future alpha. The Luna had even offered to warm his bed in exchange for her life, not once asking for leniency for her mate or son. He had taken her out, first, especially when his men informed him that the Luna had come up with the idea of trafficking the she-wolves. Turned out she was the brains and her mate and son were just the muscle to make it happen. Then he had worked through the files through the night and found that there
Gemma She couldn’t remember when last she had slept so well; she knew she hadn’t been so well rested since she’d been brought to the pack house. Honestly, it was strange that she’d slept so well, as if she feared nothing. That could only mean one thing; that she was becoming complacent. Complacency could cause her death, especially in the middle of all these beasts. She got up and made her bed, then she glanced out her window and found that there was still no guard posted at her window. This could be her chance to escape! Quickly, she rushed to the bathroom and took a shower. She came out of the steaming bathroom in her towel, like she always did and stopped short in her surprise. The soldier was standing there with the tray, holding her breakfast. Why did he show himself when everyone else tried their best to avoid her? “I’m starting to think you’re trying to see me naked…” She mused in distrust.
Grant He was half excited to visit Gemma; he could sense her intelligence, though he didn’t blame her for being untrusting. He couldn’t think that she’d had any kind of good experience since she’d been brought here and then his stupid commander and friend didn’t want his mate and locked her up again. Grant could see himself being friends with her; he felt drawn to her. Not in the creepy stalker type of way, but the ‘we could be friends and partners in crime’ way. He wasn’t sure how much humans ate, so he always put together a tray that would fill his own stomach. But this time he’d brought a plate for himself as well, maybe eating together would make her feel less like a prisoner. He just really wanted to get through her defenses and see the real person. He was sure she was an undiscovered treasure and he wanted to be the first to find who she truly was. Unlocking the door, he glanced around and then into her office and closet, but then he noticed the closed bathroom door and
GemmaShe’d kept going as long as she could, until her legs were about to give out and it was getting too dark for her to see the obstacles she could trip over. She kept going until she found a place that was relatively protected by large boulders. She was just grateful that it was summer and not winter, at least that was counting in her favor.Gemma dropped to the ground that was nearly surrounded with a rock outcrop with a sigh of relief and then rummaged through her bag, fishing out her blanket and jacket that she could use for the night. She felt utterly alone sitting there in the gathering darkness, but she didn’t dare make a fire to show them where she was in case they were still out looking for her, though the fire would have soothed some of her loneliness.Pulling out her bag with bacon, pancakes and toast, she chewed one pancake and one piece of bacon slowly, savoring the food that finally lined her stomach that had been co
Dale Dale had been annoyed with Grant, but mostly because he knew he deserved his anger. He had helped the wolf to deal with the loss of the mate he had never met, keeping his wolf from going feral. His friend would do anything to have a mate he could love fiercely since second-chance mates were beyond rare with their dwindling numbers and he had made a point of already abusing the gift he was given. But he hadn’t wanted a mate, least of all a weak human mate. But his wolf had been driving him insane since they had heard that she had escaped. So he had made a deal with his wolf that they would go find her as soon as their work was done, which helped when his wolf was quiet throughout his meeting with Elder Stuart and not attempting to break free. Once he’d managed to convince Grant to come back, he had requested another meeting with Elder Stuart after dinner and had asked the kitchen to make up travel rations. He and Grant would
Gemma It was early afternoon when Wade suddenly froze in his step. He was quiet for a long moment and then turned to her urgently. She could see he was worried as he glanced around them. Then he started pushing her towards a large tree with his nose, his sense of urgency urged her to move towards the tree as fast as she could. Then he indicated that she climb the tree, pointing his wolf nose up at the tree. Obediently, she started climbing the tree, grateful that her sneakers had a good tread and that she had grown up a tomboy. Wade watched her until she came to the third big branch and then spun round and growled as two other wolves suddenly appeared out of the woods. The two males were dirty and their clothes looked like they’d donned rags. They stared at him with speculation, then sniffed the air and looked up into the tree. They caught her fearful gaze in between the leaves and sneered lasciviously. “Come
Dale He was sure they were gaining on the human and the rogue, their scent was stronger and his wolf was getting excited at the prospect of seeing his mate again. Dale was still at odds with himself and his wolf, since he didn’t know what to do once he found her. His opinion on her had been changed somewhat with being on her trail, but she was still painfully naïve to follow a rogue when she didn’t know what he would do. Suddenly, his thoughts were interrupted by a squeal of fright and his first reaction was to run at full speed in the direction it had come from, but then he stopped short. What the hell? What was going on? He stood in a small natural clearing with one dead and drained rogue and the scent of a vampire along with the rogue she had been following. He followed the trails and what he could deduce was that the rogue she was following had led her towards the large tree, which she had climbed, but then the vampire scen
GemmaWhen the trees thinned out, Charlie finally put her down, but her legs were still wobbly from the speed at which they had travelled. They kindly waited a moment for her to catch her breath and find her strength again, then Wade nudged her hand with his nose and pointed his nose to her bag.She guessed he wanted the clothes and she took the bag from her shoulder before she opened it and took out his clothes. She had just stood straight and held the clothes out to him when she heard the bones snapping into place a moment before he stood naked in front of her again.“Geez! I wish you’d warn a girl before just flashing me like that!” She retorted as she turned her head away to stare into the trees as her cheeks warmed with embarrassment, only hearing both males chuckle at her bashfulness about his naked form.Charlie picked up her backpack and hung it over his shoulder before he held his arm to her, putting her
GemmaIt had been four years since they had become the royal couple. They had changed the werewolf world. At first, it was utter chaos. There had been an uprising of werewolves intent on bringing back the Elders, but they were mostly the wolves that had benefitted from the three elders’ wrongdoing. The uprising was quickly squelched when Dale called the army to clear the problem. The army had unanimously pledged their allegiance to the crown and for a while Gemma and Dale were working to find housing for the complete army. They were forced to expand their land to the west, where there was no pack.Barracks and a bigger pack house were built. Well, it became more of a stronghold. The old pack house was turned into the hospital, orphanage and halfway house for the rogues that had come for protection.Arcus had never left, playing a big role in their lives as mentor and guide, along with Elder Stuart and Elder
DaleThe full moon was about to rise above the tall trees, which signified the perfect time to hold the ceremony for their mating as the royal couple. He was still in disbelief that he had such an amazing mate and that she had forgiven him. She would be his tonight and he would spend every day of his life making up for how he had treated her when they had met.Once the wolves and the council were seated on both sides of the aisle and many more spectators had found seating on the ground around them for this momentous occasion that would make history, Tamara announced that she would find Arcus and inform his Gemma that they were waiting for her.He was nervous, not because he wasn’t sure about mating her, but he feared that she would see him for the undeserving bastard he was and change her mind about marking him. Grant was sitting in the front row, grinning like a loon with his amusement. Elder Gordon would be holding the ceremony to
GemmaHer day had been spent getting ready for the mating ceremony that night. It was apparently done under the full moon. She stood in the room, everyone had left and she was feeling emotional. Her father would have loved to walk her down the aisle. Instead she had to do this alone.Emily had left her momentarily to help with some arrangements. Apparently, wolves didn’t have the same type of ceremony that humans did. There was no maid of honor, best man or flower girls. It was just her, walking towards Dale that would wait for her at the front with the Elder. They would say their vows; mark each other in front of everyone there and then she would be crowned directly after. She would then lead them all in wolf form in her first run as the new queen. Could she really be queen? If someone had told her accepting the invitation for the interview would take her on the crazy path to finding a mate and
GemmaThere would be no formal dinner that night, since everyone would be enjoying the carnival. But Gemma went with Dale to their room – was it odd that she already thought of the room as theirs? He went to shower the dust and dirt off first; he was dusty after his headlong run, covered in the mud.Gemma took a shower in the adjoining bathroom, and pulled on some jeans and a cute top. A moment later someone knocked on her door and she opened it. Emily caught her hand and she was suddenly surrounded by laughing and cheering she-wolves.“What’s going on?” She asked with confusion.“It’s your bachelorette party! We’re going to be pampered and then meet the guys to dance outside under the moonlight.” The she-wolves cheered again while she was dragged down the stairs and into the parlor that had been converted into a large spa. There were nail technici
DaleHe’d been itching to try this obstacle course since he saw it. Of course, Elder Stuart had insisted that he only see it today, for the first time. But now that he’d seen it; he was excited to try it and he thought it would be a great training method for the warriors once a week. They could always add more onto the course later on and he was sure that would be the case for the next tournament. They were watching the warriors run the track first and he was proud to see that most of his warriors were leading the group. He could see from the sweat coating them, that this course was a good challenge for them. It tested all the muscles in their bodies and he was impressed with his little mate’s course. But then he scented her arousal. Was she interested in one of the warriors? He glanced down at her, but she seemed to be staring off in space with a sexy little smirk on her face and he couldn’t resi
GemmaIt was the sixth day of the tournament and she could say in all honesty that she might be in a little deeper than she had thought with Dale. The previous afternoon, he had made out with her and had brought her to another intense climax without removing their clothes. She had never expected that dry humping would be so intense. After that he had insisted she sleep a little and she woke up in his arms again. She had never expected to like the Viking like looks, but he was becoming more handsome to her now that she allowed herself to look at him. This morning he had awakened her the same way and she was still in a bit of a daze when he carried her down for their habitual morning run. For the first time she was looking forward to the mating ceremony just a little bit.Daisy snorted at her thoughts and she had to admit that she was looking forward to the mating ceremony more than just a little bit. “Can you n
DaleAfter their meeting with the supernatural council members they excused themselves to go to the office to get some of their work done. Tamara and Arcus assured them that they would handle the arrangements for the crowning after their mating ceremony so they didn’t have to worry about that. They hadn’t been in the office long when Jessica showed up with the new candidate she insisted would be able to replace her as assistant when she and Malcolm would take over his childhood pack. Turns out it was Emily, who had agreed to do online classes at night while she assisted Gemma during the day.Dale made a mental note to find some way to make Gemma slow down so Emily could finish her senior year in school and maybe some online college classes, as well. It would do them both good not to be overloaded with work all the time.Jessica had then linked him that she was close to finished with the bigger, better office that would give t
Gemma“I can imagine.” Tamara chuckled with amusement. “When we found out that you are a Finder, we knew something was different about you. The extra talents were always given to the royal Lycan family. So we started researching your family line.”“It took quite some work, since your father was an orphan.” Bain continued. “Luckily I have some connections, so we managed to run your bloodline all the way back to the baby that Tamara had handed over to the human family. You are indeed a direct descendant of Arcus’ brother, Bartoleus. You are the princess of the Lycans and werewolves.”“But I’m human – was human!” Gemma protested with confusion.“Your wolf is not a normal wolf, have you noticed how strong you are?” Bain smiled at her; he also had a creepy kind of smile.“She has a stronger alpha aur
GemmaSomething about the atmosphere around her started to change. She heard whispers going rampant while they watched the teenagers battling. These battles were more competitive and some of these teenagers were pretty impressive with their hand to hand combat, but something was drawing everyone else’s attention. She glanced around her with confusion, but she could see nothing that would draw their attention. Dale came to sit down next to her, pulling her closer to his side and she had an idea he knew what was going on.
