"I hope Paxton and Smith can handle watching Laney, too," Shane admitted. "But I have them on the IAC, and they did okay yesterday during the memorial. Surely they can keep an eye on her for a few minutes...."
"Hope so," Cadence mumbled.
"We have an election date," Hannah offered. "Not sure if you heard."
Aaron had insisted on walking Cadence and Jamie down to the holding pen where Laura was being kept, despite the fact that Jamie had been down there dozens of times by himself in the last few days. Though Aaron wasn't lying when he said it wasn't a prison, it was a small room with no windows and a door that not only locked but was reinforced against the possibilities of any being--Hunter, Guardian, Vampire, or otherwise--finding a way to muscle through it. Standing outside of the room, he watched as Cadence double-checked that her Glock was loaded with the titanium bullets and then shoved it into the back of her waistband beneath her shirt.
The slight change in expression on Laura's face at the word fiancé was not lost on Cadence, and even though Laura tried to hide it from her, as she did her growing fear, Cadence was willing to exploit it. "Oh, you didn't see my ring? He's got fine taste, that one." She held her ring up to the light so Laura could have a better view."You're engaged to... Aaron?" Laura asked."Sure am,
In the apartment where Laney was being held, Shane and Meagan were not only providing assurance that she didn't attempt to escape and free her sister, they were also present as she watched the interrogation of her sister, Laura, the result of which was more than a few tears being shed by the younger of the two. When Cadence entered the room, followed closely by Aaron, it was evident that Laney had been crying. She began to formulate an apology, but then remembered what Aaron had said and hardened her expression instead. This was no time to show weakness. She hadn't seen Laney since arriving ba
The US Customs and Boarder Control Office in Miami, Florida was just like any typical government office. A flag flew out front, assuring Hannah and Aurora that they had reached the appropriate building, and when they entered the agents were as unfriendly and uncooperative as one might expect from their governmental cousins in similar offices. Aurora approached the counter, badge in hand, with Hannah standing over her shoulder, concentrating on persuading the wiry, dark-haired agent to be cooperative. It took him several minutes to notice the women at all, staring blankly at a computer screen i
"We believe Finn is hiding out within the cave system here, although it's possible he could be finding shelter any number of places out here on the mountain range. There are some old hiker cabins, plenty of rock formations, areas with dense foliage." Morgan concluded her explanation standing behind Sylvia's chair, both hands grasping the black leather, surveying the team to see what questions they had. Clearly, she had been doing this a long time, and Cadence was impressed with her polished skills--despite the odd looks she kept giving Aaron."How large of an area are we talking about?" Jamie
Tracking Travis ended up being less difficult than they would have imagined. It turned out he was a straightforward sort of a Vampire. He basically seemed to stick to Highway 89 as he approached the Crazies and there were plenty of accounts of seeing a suspicious character, as well as the body of one elderly drifter that never made the evening news.Aaron was content to let Cadence make the calls, under his careful observation, and once she verified Travis was holed up for the day in a shed behind an old abandoned home near the foothills of the Crazies, she decided to coordinate the hunt for t
As much as Cadence appreciated having the opportunity to plan the attack and place everyone in position, she was not confident enough in her own ability to actually call the hunt at this point, so she deferred to Aaron and his decades of experience when it came to actually running the show. This would be a little more difficult for him because he would be on the ground, rather than overseeing movement from above, as he generally preferred, but considering the importance of this particular assault, not to mention that he felt compelled to personally cover Cadence, he insisted on coordinating while actually participating. Cadence agreed that it was for the best and that if anyone could multi-task in such a stressful situation, it was the Guardian Leader.
As if they were actually heeding Finn’s words, the helicopters pulled away, leaving him in darkness. An uneasy feeling overcame him. For a moment, he began to wonder if they had actually left him. Had they listened to his pleas? He glanced over the top of the bolder again, hesitantly, and saw nothing. He ducked back again, just in case. Listening intently, he froze. In the darkness around him, he no longer heard the footfalls of the LIGHTS team members. The helicopters were far enough off now, he could hardly see or hear them. Keeping his gun drawn, he slowly stood, preparing to run again. Just as he got to his feet, a force hit him squarely in the chest, the impact jarring him much like a runaway freight train colliding with the side of a mountain. As he careened through the air, he reali
