Calm

Taking some deep breaths, Cassidy commanded herself to calm down a little bit. This was Christian, after all. At the very worst, he would get what was coming to him. Unless, of course, she ended up getting in trouble for helping him in the first place and not telling anyone.

In the silence, she remained in his head, pushing a little deeper than she meant to and caught the flicker of a woman’s face in his mind’s eye. She was beautiful, with long brown hair and lavender eyes. The way she was dressed, Cassidy could tell the memory was from a long time ago. Part of her wanted to dig even deeper and solve the mystery for herself, but that always seemed to feel unethical. So she decided to ask instead. “Who is she?”

It took him forever to answer, and when he did, he was still angry. “Why would I tell you that when you just threatened to reveal everything else to your sister?”

“That’s a fair point. L

Christian’s eyes felt like they were about to dislodge from his head. Going on eight hours without as much as a pinprick of light was painfully trying. A few times, his eyes started playing tricks on him, and he thought he saw shapes in the darkness. Other times, he imagined he heard crying somewhere out there in the blackness, but he decided it had to be his own mind messing with him because as far as he could tell, he was completely and utterly alone. For about the hundredth time, he decided to shout at Daunator and demand he come and face him. Taking into consideration what Cassidy had said earlier about the Findley sisters, a tactic he had yet to try, he called out into the darkness. “Daunator! I know you’re nearby! And I know you can hear me! I have something that you want, you know? I have access to the Findleys. I was just talking to Cassidy a moment ago. She can read minds. If you show yourself, perhaps I can strike up a deal with them!”

“All righty now, tell me again. What the hell did them damn things look like?” Heather took a giant bite out of her bacon cheeseburger, and for a moment, Cassidy marveled at her skills.“Uh, well, they were people, but they were completely jet black, like they’d been through a crisper. But they weren’t burned. I mean, they weren’t charred or anything. Just black. Except for their eyes. Those were red. And their clothes were weird. Some of them, anyway. Some of them looked like they were wearing clothes from a really long time ago, like villagers in an old movie or something. They crawled down the sides of the buildings, like spiders sort of. And they had claws. Maybe you should just jump into my head and then you could see for yourself.” She took a small bite out of the hot ham and cheese sandwich in front of her but she wasn’t really hungry.“Okay, sounds good to me. Pull ‘em up.”Cassidy felt a

Brandon grabbed the pizza he’d ordered and hurried out of the trainee apartment building, back to his own, but he kept an eye out for Cassidy the entire time he was walking, hoping he didn’t run into her again—literally or figuratively—since that had been one of the most painful experiences of his whole life. He couldn’t believe how far downhill their relationship had gone in just a matter of days.Back in his apartment, he dropped the pizza box on the coffee table and went to the kitchen to grab a soda and a napkin. While he felt a little like a loser eating pizza in his apartment by himself again, he didn’t want to go to any of his friends’ places because he didn’t know if Cass would be there. And since most of them were her friends first, it seemed a little bit wrong to make her be the one who couldn’t hang out anymore. He had a seat on the couch and picked up the remote, contemplating whether or not he could han

Cassidy did her best to shake off her encounter with Brandon, but even after a quick sprint on her treadmill, she still felt wrong about the whole situation. She wanted to reach out to him, to call him, to let him know she was sorry for keeping secrets from him. Maybe she should’ve told him what Alex had said, or about what Christian was up to. She knew the biggest strain on their relationship had been the fact she wasn’t telling Brandon everything, and her own experience told her how unsettling it was to know someone you care about is keeping something massive from you.It was too late to go back and tell him now, though. And if she let him read Alex’s letter, he might be even more mad at her than he was already. As for Christian, she needed to check in with him. It had been a couple of hours, and there was a chance he was ready for her to get help.Still dripping sweat from her sprint, she sat down on the couch and closed her eyes. “You ok

  • The Clandestine Saga   Hannah's Meeting

“Thanks for meeting with me. I know your time is valuable, so I’ll get right to it. I have some disturbing footage from a hunt in Hungary last night. Mila sent it to me a few hours ago. I’ve been trying to figure out what I’m looking at, but I must admit, I haven’t got a clue. Part of me thinks we should just wait a few days until Aaron and Cadence get back, but I decided to go ahead and let you see it. Maybe we can figure it out together,” Hannah said.“That sounds slightly terrifying,” Elliott mumbled. “Something you’ve never seen?”“I know. I thought I’d seen just about everything imaginable,” Hannah admitted. She pulled up the video Mila had sent her from the hunt on a large screen behind her on her office wall and swiveled her chair to watch it with them. The footage wasn’t steady at all, an indicator that the person recording was running, but eventually, Hannah knew,

We were just discussing a few situations that have been going on in other areas....” Hannah stopped talking as she noticed Cadence’s expression for the first time. The Hunter Leader w

Cadence was silent as they walked from the office building back to the apartments. Aaron didn’t ask her anything, and she was glad, because she really didn’t know what to say. Ever since she’d awoken in the middle of the day with those horrible images in her head, she hadn’t been able to think of anything else. Seeing that she hadn’t invented the creatures in her own mind was even more terrifying than believing she just had a warped imagination. They reached the apartment building and headed for the elevator. Lots of friendly faces greeted them, and it was evident everyone they bumped into wanted to stop and chat, but the McReynolds were on a mission. Cadence hadn’t bothered to contact her sister to see if she was home, and as the elevator climbed to Cassidy’s floor, she hoped she was because she wanted to talk to her quickly and then head back over to the office building so that they could get to the bottom of this—not that she

Hannah took Jo to give her a bath, and Ona helped Cadence get Cadon latched while Jamie left to go check on his own one-month-old baby. Cadence’s son was a pro almost immediately, latching on the first try to resting peacefully while he nursed. Cadence couldn’t believe how lucky she was to have even one sweet baby, let alone the blessings of two. He wore a tiny little cap to keep him warm, and she couldn’t help but stroke his head while he made soft baby noises in her arms.Hannah brought Jo back before Cadon was finished. It took her daughter much longer to latch. She kept turning her feisty little face away, growling her discontentment as Cadence tried to get her on and not disturb Cadon at the same time. With Aaron’s help, their daughter finally latched, but he had to have his hand on her back or else she’d pull off again. “She is definitely a Daddy’s girl,” Cadence declared, shaking her head at her strong-spirited daughter.

“For the record, there really is no comparison between us naming our son after a famous jazz pianist and you naming your daughter after a murderous dictator,” the Healer pointed out before getting back to the task at hand. “I think in two or three more pushes, we’ll have a baby.” He was looking at Cadence now, smiling at her above the draped sheet that made her feel a little more secure even if it didn’t really hide anything at all from the doctor.“Okay,” she said again, ready to get it over with. Jamie told her to push, and she did, as hard as she could, hoping for two and not three as the lucky number.“Keep pushing,” Jamie said, even though Aaron had reached ten. “She’s almost there.”Cadence strained even harder, giving it every bit of energy she had left, and a few seconds later, she felt her daughter slip into the world. “One more push, Cadence,” Jamie insisted, his normally friendly-tone replaced by his not-quite-as-friendly medical professional tone. “One more time, and we’ll have a baby.”Cadence could feel the sweat dripping off of her forehead and wondered how normal human women did this, especially the ones who refused any sort of pain medication. Even with her superhuman strength and resilience, she was tired. Jamie had gloves on so he wasn’t using any of his healing powers to help her, but she had opted for the epidural, which minimized her pain but did nothing for the exhaustion.“You ready?” Aaron asked, standing next to her, holding one leg while Ona, a Healer who was acting as Jamie’s nurse, held the other.“I’m ready,” she nodded. Her husband’s smile hadn’t dimmed since her water broke three hours earlier. It might not have diminished since they’d left Prague eight months ago,

Jamie had told her she was pregnant before the hunt. How it had slipped her mind was beyond her, but yes, she was going to have a baby.Or was she? Her eyes flew to Jamie’s face, all of her questions bottled up in her eyes as she raised both brows, hoping he could alleviate her worry.Jamie smiled and gave a small nod only she could see. All of the air rushed out of Cadence’s lungs again as her hand flew to her abdomen, sighing in relief.“What is it?” Cassidy asked. “What was the other thing you couldn’t remember before?”Part of her wanted to keep their little secret just that, and she was disappointed that she hadn’t been the one to tell Aaron. But Jamie, what about that serum you made? Do you think we should try it? If we can get the Hybrids back up there, we might be able to save some of those people who are still trapped in the holes.”“Oh, right.” Jamie scratched his head, like he’d forgotten about the serum. “Yeah, why don’t you and Cale start working on that. • The Clandestine Saga   Breathe

Lungs burning, body aching with the pain of soldering itself back together, eyes blinded by brilliant white, Cadence opened her mouth and sucked in air for the first time in as long as she could remember. Her legs still felt like they were on fire, like she’d been running for hours, but as she tipped her head back and began to cough the memories of what had happened to her, how she’d killed Daunator and then found herself in the air with no ground beneath her boots, flooded her mind, and every trace of memory about why she felt like she’d been running fled her mind.“Cadence? Cadence!”Aaron was there. She could feel his hands on her, even though she couldn’t open her eyes to look at him yet. Her throat burned as she continued to sputter, coughing and choking on the air she so desperately wanted in her lungs. How long had she gone without taking a breath? Jamie was at twenty-two, and Aaron was trying to focus, but the voices to his left were prominent in his mind. He could still hear Elliott’s murmurs, Cass’s sobs, sighs and gasps from others. Christian was pacing back and forth, back and forth, back and forth, behind almost everyone. Aurora, free of her handcuffs now that she was no longer a threat, was doubled over on the ground, her hands linked around her knees, her wails having lost their voice minutes ago so that she was no longer making a noise as her body shook and spasmed. Eliza had her arm around the much taller Hunter, trying to be comforting, but Aaron was aware that, of everyone here, Eliza Wrath was the only one who really didn’t care if Cadence ever opened her eyes again. He could feel it rolling off of her in waves of ugliness like the sea during the type of storm that leaves debris littered all over the beach, breaks boats in its wake, and sends sailors to the bottom of the ocean. There were
