A Look Around
Cadence hadn't slept well. That was nothing unusual. She hadn't slept well for quite some time, particularly since the night she had pointed a loaded gun at her ex-boyfriend and pulled the trigger. Even though Jack's death had been an accident, it still haunted her.
She had been told eventually she wouldn't have to sleep as much as a human. Eight months into her Transformation, she was not there yet. She had been lagging all day from a lack of rest. For once in her life, she wished she were actually a coffee drinker.

Cale caught up to her outside beneath an expansive oak tree. He hesitated to say anything, unsure whether or not she was still working. After a moment, he finally whispered, "So, what do you think?"Cadence smiled. "I think it's fine. I mean, I think it's doable." She was nodding, her hands on her hips. Despite the fact that she had consumed no alcohol the night before, Cadence awoke feeling as if she had been hit by a Mac truck. The restless nights were starting to add up. "How's it going, Cale?" Aaron asked as the doctor got within a few feet. He offered his hand, which Cale accepted, the questioning expression still on his face. "I just happened to be in the area, and I heard that you had a pretty significant hunt going on tonight, so I decided to stop by to observe."Cale nodded and then finally spoke. "All right," he said. "I wish I would have known you were going to be around. I feel like you should know the plan."

They neared the driver's side window and the Vampire in the back opened fire. It was not a machine gun this time, at least, just a hand gun. Nevertheless, Cadence ducked back inside, fear of getting shot temporarily quelling her bravado.Aaron slowed down a little bit, partially to give her time to regroup and partially because they were approaching another car. He glanced over at her and could tell she was ready to try again, so he cleared the uninvolved minivan and accelerated.

Just before they reached the trees, Aaron shifted the car into neutral, turned the wheel the other direction, and Cadence instinctively slammed her foot down on the brake. The car spun the opposite way before Aaron corrected it. It came to rest just inches from the trunks of the trees.She didn't realize he had his right arm braced against her until they had completely stopped. Clearly, he had been trying to protect her from the airbag. They locked eyes, and she finally let the breath out she'd been holding for the entire skid.
The Clandestine Saga Take Off
Aaron had just completed his pre-flight check list when Cadence caught up to him. Somehow, he had known she was coming, despite the fact that her IAC was off, and there was no other way he could have known; he just knew.Part of him had hoped she would miss him, that he'd make it off the ground before she arrived. But now that she was here, he was also a little relieved. Better to get this conversation over with now than to let it continue to linger.
