Chapter 839

Author: Chweety
After Mateo left, Chloe and Henry remained seated in the living room. Chloe felt an overwhelming discomfort settle over her.

The Hoffmans were like a cage, imprisoning more than just Charles. The only difference was that Charles had the courage and ability to fight back—something she lacked.

"Uncle Henry..." Chloe's voice was soft.

"Go home. I'll handle your grandfather," Henry reassured her, waving his hand. "Charlie is still sentimental, at least enough to hold back. Remember that."

"I understand, Uncle Henry," Chloe replied quietly.

After leaving the Hoffman residence, Charles' expression remained dark. It did not take long for Henry to call him.

"Uncle Henry," Charles answered, his tone controlled.

"Your Aunt Nancy..." Henry began.

Charles replied, softening his demeanor slightly, "She's at Phoenix Tree Residence. Don't worry, Uncle Henry. I'll take good care of Aunt Nancy. She'll be staying at Phoenix Tree Residence for now, and Nelly will be with her. You can rest easy."

When Charles returned, he had already tamped down the anger and frustration he carried from earlier, but Noelle could still sense the lingering heaviness in his demeanor. She was chatting with Nancy, sharing amusing stories and anecdotes from her school days about friends she had known.Nancy seemed to grow even fonder of Noelle with every conversation and asked more about her life. She clearly appreciated Noelle's personality.Noticing Charles quietly entering the room, Nancy smiled. "You're back already?"Noelle looked up, her eyes curving into crescents with a bright smile. "Charlie, you're home?""Yeah," Charles answered. At the sight of Noelle's cheerful expression, the weight on his shoulders seemed to lift entirely. The harshness he carried melted away.He returned her smile. "What were you two talking about? You seem to be having a good time.""We were talking about you!" Noelle grinned, standing to take his coat and fetch him a pair of slippers. "Did everything get sort

"I know that," said Charles.Meanwhile, Noelle had gone upstairs, but she still felt suspicious about Charles' behavior. It was not that she was overthinking. After spending so much time together, she had grown familiar with his moods.Earlier, she had sensed the emotional turmoil he was suppressing. Things were not as simple as he made them seem, but since Charles had chosen not to say anything, she decided not to press him. After hanging up his coat, she lingered upstairs for a while. When she finally came down, she only saw Nancy in the living room. Charles was nowhere to be seen."Aunt Nancy, where's Charlie?" Noelle asked."He's in the kitchen. Come sit with me," Nancy replied with a smile, waving Noelle over. "But I told him I'd cook dinner tonight!" Noelle said, a little surprised."No need. Charlie is handling it. You just come and keep me company for a bit.""Alright." Noelle glanced toward the kitchen and saw Charles washing vegetables. Smiling, she tapped the kitche

Noelle was briefly stunned but then nodded. "Yes, we're married." She had no intention of hiding it. Since Clarisse already knew, there was no need to lie.Clarisse's expression darkened further. "Get in the car."Noelle nodded again. "Alright."As soon as Noelle got in, the car sped off.Neither of them spoke during the ride, but Clarisse's eyes roamed over Noelle without restraint, her disdain plain to see.Noelle took note of it—her future mother-in-law clearly did not like her.Clarisse silently scrutinized Noelle from head to toe, her gaze filled with contempt—especially since Noelle's face resembled Kelly's so closely.Noelle remained quiet, choosing to wait and observe. If her opponent did not act, she would not either. Not knowing Clarisse's true intentions, Noelle kept her guard up and made sure not to reveal any of her cards. After about ten minutes, the car stopped in front of a quiet-looking restaurant. Clarisse stepped out, casting a glance at Noelle, who followe

"You... have quite the sharp-tongue!"Clarisse had not expected Noelle to be this difficult to deal with. It was clear that Noelle had no intention of taking her seriously."Do you really think that by saying these things, you can compare yourself to me?"Noelle smiled calmly. "I never thought that. In fact, I'd rather you compliment my eloquence. After all, Charlie thinks I'm quite articulate too.""Insolent!" Clarisse slammed the table with a harsh thud. "It seems you really won't leave Charlie, will you?""I have no reason to leave my husband. So, I'm not sure what you hope to achieve by meeting me today. Which mother doesn't wish happiness for her child? Yet here I am, facing you—a mother determined to break her son's marriage. I find it... intriguing," Noelle replied, her tone firm and unyielding. "Of course, I want him to be happy, but not with you!" Clarisse's gaze turned sharp. It was filled with hostility as if Noelle were her greatest enemy. If Noelle did not know for

"Charlie!"Clarisse staggered backward, gripping the dining table for support as she gasped. "Charlie, are you really willing to oppose the entire Hoffman family and the Bakers for the sake of this woman?"Do you even know what you're doing? Is she worth it? You're meant to be the future head of the Hoffmans!""Whether she's worth it or not is my business. It has nothing to do with the Bakers," Charles replied coldly. If he had been holding back earlier, Charles released his full authority now, his sharp gaze locking onto Clarisse's. "I suppose your brother forgot to take you with him when he left Brookville recently, Madam Baker.""I'm the daughter-in-law of the Hoffmans, your father's wife!""How fortunate that you still remember you're my father's wife," Charles sneered, his smile laced with cold mockery. He was clearly unfazed by Clarisse's words."Your affairs with the Hoffmans are none of my concern. Likewise, my marriage and my wife are nobody's business, least of all you

Charles sneered, "Nothing wrong? The Bakers are the least innocent of all. Don't assume that just because I was a child back then, I didn't know what was going on."My father was merciful toward you out of affection, but that doesn't mean I will be. You trampled on his feelings and sought to take everything from the Hoffmans. Your family's schemes were just too perfect, weren't they?"Clarisse's face turned deathly pale. "Do you even understand what you're saying? How could I have done such a thing? I'm your mother! How could I possibly do that?""You wouldn't, but that doesn't mean the Bakers wouldn't," Charles replied, steadily closing the distance between them. "Go ask your beloved brother what he did 35 years ago. My father treated you with kindness and respect, but you repaid him by helping others hurt him. "Then ask your brother what he did to my father 25 years ago and what he did to Janet three years ago."Charles advanced step by step, forcing Clarisse to back away.At

Noelle stared at Charles, utterly stunned by what she had just heard. She shifted her gaze between Charles and Clarisse, her expression reflecting a mix of disbelief and revelation. Moments ago, she had wondered if Charles was being too harsh toward Clarisse, questioning whether his behavior was unfilial. Now, those thoughts had vanished entirely.Charles had seen with his own eyes how his mother had drugged his father and involved an innocent woman in the process. Hearing about it gave Noelle a new understanding of everything. She suddenly recalled Charles mentioning a woman named Liliana in the past—his half-sister. Could she be the child born to that woman from the night Charles witnessed as a child?"No, Charlie, let me explain! I did it only because—"Charles interrupted, his tone sharp, "Only because you wanted to divorce my father? And then you tried to ruin Uncle Henry's marriage? You wanted to break up Uncle Henry and Aunt Nancy so that you could marry him instead?""I…

"Charles began, "She's from a poor family. After what happened, she lost her job and went back home, but her family didn't forgive her. She raised the child alone while going through a lot of hardship. Eventually, with no other option, she turned to the Hoffmans, hoping they would adopt the child."Noelle stiffened, stunned by the revelation. "And... your father, what did he do?""My father had intended to divorce my mother, to set her free. They had both agreed to it, but at the last moment, my mother changed her mind and refused to go through with it.""Why?" Noelle asked, confused."Why?" Charles repeated with a bitter smile. "Have you forgotten the Bakers standing behind her? A divorce would've cut off all ties between the Bakers and the Hoffmans, severing the Bakers' foothold in Brookville. My uncle isn't a fool."Noelle let out a quiet sigh, feeling the weight of how cruel the situation had been."And what happened to Liliana?" she asked softly."My mother refused to divor

Just don't send me away now, please."With that, Eloise held out the glass of water to Steven again. "You need to take care of yourself. You haven't had any rest for days."Steven stared at Eloise's defiant face and suddenly laughed mockingly. He stood up, towering over her with his tall frame. He tilted her chin up with his long fingers, his icy eyes locking onto her bare face. His words cut deep. "You seem to have forgotten that you're just a pawn to me. Even your name, Eloise, was chosen by me. Remember your place!"Eloise's face went white as she heard his words. Her hands balled into fists at her sides. She tried to read his expression, but his eyes were like ice—no warmth nor emotion."Yes, I've always known who I am," Eloise said quietly, looking down. Charles squinted at him. "You don't seem too happy to have me around!""No, no, don't get me wrong. Noelle and Kelly are my sisters, and they’re part of the Smith family. I wouldn't ever dislike them! But don't you think you're wasting resources by being here?"Sean was practically pleading. "Look, if you're not smart with your money, that's fine by me!""Silly Sean! You just said they're your sisters, yet now you're talking about money?" Charles raised an eyebrow. Sean's face fell. "I messed up. I don't want your money. I'll pay you to leave, okay?"Charles just smirked. "Alright, I'll have my things packed up and head out in a couple of days."Sean let out a big sigh of relief. "Okay! Yves's car lingered long at the hospital entrance, finally pulling away as the last bit of night faded.Yves had been hanging around the hospital entrance for a while, and the secret guard who was watching him had already told Charles about it. Actually, Charles had seen the car parked outside the hospital on the security screen a long time ago.Charles was staring at the screen, lost in thought. After a bit, a tiny smile appeared on his face, and his eyes sparkled.Charles was surprised that Yves cared so much about Kelly. He was brave enough to come there all by himself, even though it was dangerous. The hospital was full of their own people. If Charles had not been sitting there and had caught Yves instead, this whole thing might already be over. The door to the hospital room opened, and Sean, who was tall and striking, stood there. He had been at the hospital a lot those days, staying close ever since he started looking after Kelly. Linda was there too.Every day, Linda was b

"You must really want to die!" Yves twisted his hand, and Elon's arm popped out of its socket. "Who told you the York family has a dungeon? My father? Or...""No! The old master has nothing to do with this!""Hmph!" Yves glared at Elon. "You never saw me as your master, did you? Only my father?" Yves squeezed Elon's cheek. "What did my father give you that made you remain so loyal, even years after his death?""Nothing... You are my master. The old master gave me my life and asked me to follow you for all of it, so no matter what you do, I will obey.""Then why didn't you listen when I said not to hurt her?" A dangerous look flickered in Yves' eyes. "Hmm?""Because I know she'll mess up your big plans, Sir. You don't see it now, but one day you'll understand that I am doing all this for you." Elon clenched his teeth against the pain. "Sir, please see the truth. This woman will only hold you back. Even if you take my life now, I won't complain, but don't let her ruin your big plans

Nobody knew if Kelly was alive or not because Sean's hospital would not let any information slip out. The place was locked down tight by Charles's crew, and not even Yves's toughest guys could bust in and rescue Kelly. Yves did not have a clue about Kelly's condition, so he could not just rush in without a plan.Somewhere hidden on the outskirts of town, a man was strung up on a scary-looking rack, his eyes shut and barely breathing.Yves sat on a chair nearby, fiddling with something in his hands, his eyes icy as he stared at the man hanging there. "Alright, then I'll leave my sister in your hands!"After spending some time with Linda, Noelle had come to realize that apart from being extremely serious when treating patients, Linda was otherwise quite childish. At moments like this, she was still very much a child at heart. However, spending time with Linda was easy. She had a way of making treatments feel relaxing, ensuring there was no pressure at all.Once Linda finished joking around, Charles led her away, taking her directly to Sean's lab for research. For the past few days, Linda had not stepped out of the hospital because she was entirely focused on finding a cure for the virus. She had practically made Sean's lab her home, eating, drinking, and sleeping there without a care.Despite her young age, Linda was undoubtedly a medical prodigy. She was only in her teens, yet she handled these complex medical challenges with astonishing composure.Sean had always believed his medical skills were exceptional—at least within h

His slightly rough fingertips brushed against Noelle's skin, his gaze filled with tenderness as he shook his head slightly. "It's okay now."Noelle, however, couldn't hold back her emotions. She leaned her head against Charles' chest and wrapped her arms around his waist. Her voice carried a hint of grievance. "Why didn't you tell me?"If she had not noticed Linda's secretive behavior and recalled Peter's and Tania's hesitation that night, she would have never known just how much suffering Kelly had endured. Not to mention, it was all because of her. If not for the virus in her body, Kelly would not have put herself in danger."Don't cry." Charles coaxed her gently. "She wouldn't want you to be sad, would she?"Through the glass panel of the hospital room, he saw Linda putting away the silver needles. He gently patted Noelle's back. "Do you want to go in and see her?"Noelle pulled away from Charles, took the tissue from his hand, and wiped her tears. She nodded firmly. "Yes!""

"Don't worry! You two really are sisters. Just as you're concerned about her, she's been worried about you too!"Linda was still young, and she did not quite understand the depth of sisterly bonds. She had grown up in a completely different environment. Though her family was large, there was never this kind of closeness. The person she was closest to was her older brother, but Saxon was a man, and his way of caring was completely different from that of a sister. Hence, Linda had a hard time grasping the emotions that Kelly and Noelle shared. However, even if she could not fully comprehend it, she could feel that these two truly cared for each other."During the time you were missing, Noelle could barely sleep at night. She kept having nightmares. Some days were better than others, but I could only help ease her pain temporarily." Linda sighed. "And now, you've only just woken up, and the first thing on your mind is Noelle.""How is Noelle now?" Kelly asked anxiously, her eyes fil

Kelly remained in the ICU for two days before she finally woke up. This was not exactly what Linda had expected, but at least Kelly showed no adverse reactions upon regaining consciousness. However, she barely spoke.Linda had already spent several hours in the hospital ward, checking Kelly's condition and even performing acupuncture to alleviate her pain. However, Kelly was like a puppet on strings—silent and unresponsive. She did not speak, did not complain, and did not even flinch at the pain.Linda stared at Kelly's face, which looked almost identical to Noelle's, and sighed in boredom."Hey... You don't have to worry. Once your body recovers, I can remove the scars on your face and body." Linda reassured her."Trust me. After all, I do come from a family of doctors… Kelly, are you mute? Why won't you say anything?"Linda had been observing Kelly for hours now, and she was even quieter than a mute person.Even those who could not speak would at least make some sounds when th
