Chapter 36

Author: Chweety
Winter could not help smirking, though she put on a surprised face. "A fountain pen? Noelle's so thoughtful, knowing how much grandpa loves his pens. She's on the same wavelength as me. Luckily, our gifts didn't overlap."

Winter was not wrong. The crowd started to piece together the sisters' gifts, weighing their significance. They looked at Noelle with new eyes. ‘Winter went for the obvious, thinking Grandpa would love some art, but she didn't see the pen coming.’

Noelle watched Winter's dramatic display, her feelings a tangled mess. She just did not know how to react, being the center of attention like this.

Charles squinted and shot Ronald a quick look.

Ronald felt a wave of embarrassment wash over him. How had he never noticed his boss loved to stick his nose into everyone's business?

Ronald might have been grumbling inside, but he knew better than to slack off. He cleared his throat and put on a look of mock surprise. "Hey, isn't that the pen we saw the other day at Curio Cor

"Shh!"Charles's eyes narrowed. In a swift motion, he grabbed Noelle's hand. Before she could even process what was happening, he yanked her arm, spun around, and whisked her behind a pillar. His strong arms encircled her waist, pulling her close into his protective hold.Noelle was puzzled and tried to push Charles away. Despite her efforts, his arms held her tight, his finger pressed gently against her lips, signaling her to keep quiet."You promised that you'd make Grandpa and Noelle see that Xavier and I are meant to be today. It still hasn't happened yet." Winter, fuming after her clash with Noelle, pulled Jade to the back garden. "Mom, did you see Noelle earlier? She was so full of herself, making me look bad on purpose. She knows Xavier and I are the real deal. Why is she being so difficult?""Don't worry, honey," Jade reassured her, scanning the area before speaking. "When have I ever let you down? I've got this." She continued, "Just stick with Xavier, okay? I'll handle t

"That's enough. You're my dad, and she's my sister, which means I can't really do anything. But it doesn't mean I have to forgive her or accept what happened." Noelle took a sip of her tea, grimacing at the bitterness. "New tea, huh? Mom probably never even thought about giving me the good stuff. It's always Winter this, Winter that. She never cares about how I feel. What about you, Dad?""Noelle..." Julian looked at her, his eyes filled with a hint of disappointment, and he shook his head, pained. "I've tried to get through to you, but you're still not getting it. How has your sister been to you all these years? Remember it was your sister who saved you when you were kidnapped. How can you be ungrateful enough to compete with her for your boyfriend?""Dad, what are you saying?" Noelle stood up abruptly, her body trembling, her face turning ghostly pale as she stared at Julian. She could not believe her father felt the same way about the situation. Sure, Winter had saved her back t

It was like being in an oven, heat blasting from every direction, frying Noelle's brain. Through the haze, she thought she saw someone. A cool touch on her cheek, a moment of relief, made her grumble in protest. Blinking hard, the figure looming over her took her by surprise. She felt like she was floating on a cloud, then suddenly, she was free-falling.Snapping back to reality, Noelle's eyes flew open to an unfamiliar face. "Who are you?" she croaked, shocked at the sound of her own voice. She shoved the guy away and bolted from the bed. "What did you do to me?"The man ran his fingers along his jawline, his gaze sharp and calculating. "Are you just playing dumb, or do you really have no clue?"Noelle's legs gave out. She stumbled into the coffee table before collapsing to the floor. The man watched her with a hint of amusement, his eyebrow arching slightly as he said with a smirk, "Your folks told me you were still a virgin when they gave you to me.""What did you just say?" Noe

"Interesting... you..." As Simon turned his back, Noelle seized a vase and hurled it at his head with all her might. The vase crashed against his forehead, and as he slumped to the ground, his eyes locked on Noelle's. "How dare..."Noelle had given it her all, and now she was totally wiped out, slumping to the floor in a heap. Outside, Winter's voice mixed with the others, worried because they could not find Noelle. They were outside the only locked room in the house, talking about busting the door down. Noelle's heart sank. She thought she was a goner for sure. Then, like a shadow slipping through the night, Charles appeared out of nowhere. His face, all sharp angles and soft skin, came into view as she looked up. She bit her lip so hard it turned a deep, enchanting red. Desperate, she grabbed onto Charles's pants and pleaded, "Charles, save me!" Charles narrowed his eyes, a fierce look flickering across his face as he took in Noelle's flushed cheeks and the figure on the floor.

"That little troublemaker could..." Jade started to say before she caught a stern look from Julian and quickly backpedaled, "Where could she have gone? She's probably off messing around somewhere!"Jade grumbled, though she could not shake off her concern as she glanced around. "Did you guys check the whole room? Since it's Noelle's room, maybe she's hiding in here. Keep looking!"Jade, determined, flung open the wardrobe. However, it was empty. In the bathroom, the pair were as silent as graves, barely breathing. Noelle, in particular, was like a coiled spring, her hands gripping Charles tightly. She bit down hard, fighting to keep the turmoil inside her at bay.The drug's grip proved too strong, and soon Noelle was struggling, her body burning up with heat.Charles knew exactly what was happening to Noelle. After all, he was a guy who understood the powerful effects of the drug coursing through her. He gripped her shoulders firmly, trying to snap her back to reality. Noelle, str

Noelle clung to Charles, her lips finding the curve of his neck, an oasis in the desert she felt lost in. His coolness was the perfect contrast to her fiery need. She was drawn to him, time and time again, desperate for a taste of his refreshing calm.Charles's gaze grew more intense as he gently caressed Noelle's cheek with his cool hand. "Wake up!" he urged.Noelle could not hear him. She just wanted to be close to him. "Don't push me away, it aches so much!" she pleaded.Charles caught his breath, his self-control nearly shattering at the sound of Noelle's soft, seductive voice. He was no saint, especially not when it came to Noelle. With her, he had always been a little more patient. Now, with this beautiful woman in his arms, willingly embracing him, he could not just stand there unaffected."Charles, it aches," Noelle's faint voice echoed in his ear. Her fiery lips brushed against his earlobe, nibbling with impatience. Charles's eyes darkened, his hand cradling the back of h

A chill flickered in Charles's gaze as he glanced at Ronald, who promptly stood up straighter and let out a nervous laugh. "Where to now, Mr. Hoffman?""To the Phoenix Tree Residence!" Charles gently settled Noelle into the car as if she were a delicate treasure. Ronald could not help but stare until a piercing look from Charles snapped him back to reality, and he hurriedly got the car going. The sleek black Maybach vanished into the cloak of the night. The drug coursing through Noelle seemed too potent. She feverishly tugged at her clothes and whimpered softly, even though Charles had covered her with his suit jacket.Even Ronald, who was usually oblivious, could tell something was off with Noelle. However, he resolutely focused on the road ahead and did not dare sneak a peek at her. Angering Mr. Hoffman was the last thing he wanted.Noelle was in agony, her body burning up. Noelle's head smacked into the back of the front seat, the pain almost bringing tears to her eyes. She let out a soft cry, propping herself up, only to frown in confusion, "What's this? It's so hard!" she said, giving it an accidental squeeze.Charles gasped, pulling her close, his voice tense. "Stay still."Noelle heard the edge in Charles's voice and pouted, giving him a woeful look, "Are you mad at me?"Although Charles did not know whether to laugh or cry, he managed to keep his composure, gently patting Noelle's head. "Calm down. Let go.""You still haven't told me what this thing is!" Noelle gave it another curious squeeze. "Why is it on you?" Her wide-eyed innocence was making it tough for Charles to keep his cool, let alone make a move.He took a deep breath, gently pulled Noelle's hand away, and wrapped her in a comforting embrace. "Try to stay still, okay?"As Charles rolled down the window, the chilly breeze rushed in, a welcome distraction to help him settle his racin

"Sean, it's late. I need to sleep."Sean just kept looking at her. Liliana could not make out what Sean was saying anymore. She felt awful and shut her eyes tight, not wanting Sean to notice.Sean thought Liliana had dozed off from drinking too much and had a headache, so he stopped talking. The car pulled up to Liliana's hotel, and Sean gently shook her. "Liliana, time to wake up. We're here."Liliana slowly opened her eyes and saw Sean's face close to hers. Her heart, which was already fluttering, started racing. She turned her head away, swallowing hard. "Are we here already?"Once she saw they were outside the hotel, Liliana quickly got out of the car and opened the back door to help Adalee. "Ms. Cobb, can you walk?"Adalee nodded. "Yes, I can."With a sigh of relief, Liliana told Sean, "Sean, we've made it. Ms. Cobb and I will head up now."Liliana rushed off, scared that any delay might make her lose her composure. The moment everyone in the private room saw Bob, they were scared out of their wits.It was Andy, the favorite son of the Jones family in Cascade City! Even though he was the second child, he was the one everyone knew would run the company one day.Everyone felt a wave of relief, glad they had not messed with Liliana earlier. They knew that if they had, they would not just be outcasts in Cascade City, but probably everywhere else too.Sean gently put Adalee in the back seat of the car and then helped Liliana into the front seat. Noticing Liliana's pale face, he asked, "Did you have too much to drink?"When Sean touched her forehead, Liliana felt a wave of heat rush through her, like she was on fire. Sean's hand was cool, and the moment it touched her, she could not help but sigh in relief."Maybe," she said.Sean shook his head. "Where's your hangover pill? Take it now. Where do you live?"After Liliana told him the address, she saw that Adalee was already fast asleep.Sean tur

Sean nodded. "It's all done."He glanced at Adalee, who was next to Liliana, and said, "Hi, I'm Liliana's brother."Adalee, seeing a man of such stature had arrived, did not bother to question if he was truly Liliana's brother. Her main concern was to get out of there, so she nodded. "I'm sorry to trouble you.""It’s no trouble at all. Looks like you really enjoyed your meal!" With that, Sean took over supporting Adalee from Liliana. He was a big guy, so he steadied Adalee with no trouble at all. He turned to Liliana and said, "Liliana, grab Ms. Cobb's bag. We're leaving."Sean acted as if he did not even notice the other people there. He just finished speaking and started to walk away with Liliana and Adalee. However, the other guys were not just going to stand there. Even though Sean looked pretty cool, they had not seen anyone like him around Cascade City before. They thought they had these two women in the bag, but then this guy had come along and messed it up. The others did not buy Liliana's story for a second.Adalee and Liliana were both from Brookville, and they were strangers in Cascade City. The idea of her brother suddenly showing up seemed far-fetched, so they did not really pay much attention to Liliana's claim. However, they had made a mistake because the brother Liliana mentioned was real, and his name was Sean.As soon as she felt things were going south, she had already reached into her purse and dialed Sean's number.Liliana was not sure if Sean would arrive immediately, but she was certain he would not leave her hanging.Seeing how Liliana acted, one of them smirked. "Do you have family here in Cascade City?"Liliana shook her head. "No, not really. But my brother came with me a few days ago for an academic conference. He's actually here having dinner too, and we planned to head back together."Liliana pulled out her phone with a small, nervous smile and waved it at everyone. She tried to keep her cool, always smiling.

As Liliana walked by Sean, he gently grabbed her arm, making her pause. "What's up, Sean?" she asked, puzzled."Don't drink too much," he advised, handing her a pill to help with the alcohol. Liliana looked at it, surprised. "What's this for? Don't you need it?""Nope, it's all yours!" Sean replied, a hint of concern in his furrowed brow. "Just remember to take it easy on the drinks, and give me a call when you head home, alright?"Liliana felt warmth radiating from where Sean had held her arm, mirroring the heat rising in her cheeks. Sean's expression remained unchanged. She wrapped her fingers around the pill, holding it tight in her hand, and nodded. "Okay."Back in the private room, Liliana found Adalee had been drinking heavily. Her face was paler than before. She waved her over and whispered, "I'll pretend I'm not feeling well in a bit, and you can help me get out of here."Adalee's voice was faint, and though Liliana did not know what was going on, she could tell she looke

After speaking, Liliana supported herself against the wall and headed to the restroom. Bob, still holding the bottle of hangover remedy, stood in place with a glimmer in his deep-set eyes.He smirked faintly, then chuckled and shook his head. Casually, he stuffed the remedy into his pants pocket and lingered there a while longer, lighting a cigarette before finally returning to the private room.Sean was inside drinking with a few others. They were all people brought in by Bob and were prominent figures in the pharmaceutical and medical industries.Truth be told, the entire dinner was simply Bob paving the way for Sean. Although these individuals were leaders in their fields, they still had to curry favor. The man they aimed to please was Bob—better known as Andy Jones, the second son of Jones Group.Though Bob was technically the second son, everyone in Cascade City knew he was the legitimate heir to the Jones family and, eventually, the Smiths as well. That made him a powerful fi

Liliana had not wanted to drink, but the other party insisted on making a toast. Under such circumstances, she could not exactly refuse. It was clear they would not even continue discussing the partnership unless she played along. She glanced at Adalee, whose expression was far from pleasant. However, given that they still had to maintain a working relationship with the client, Adalee subtly signaled Liliana to go along with it. Liliana understood—she could not say no.Hence, round after round, Liliana did her best to hold her own. She even tried to fake it occasionally, but she still ended up drinking quite a bit."Excuse me, I need to use the restroom," she said eventually, unable to take any more. Her head felt light, and her steps wobbled slightly as she walked.Though her alcohol tolerance was not exactly terrible, the combination of red and white wine tonight was rough. Even someone with a decent tolerance would struggle. She had not even reached the restroom when she stum

After finishing dinner, Liliana and Adalee went to pay the bill, only to be told it had already been paid for.Liliana instinctively suspected Sean, but Adalee, unaware, asked the cashier, "Who paid for it?""Are you Ms. Hoffman?" the cashier asked.Adalee shook her head and pointed at Liliana. "She is."The cashier smiled. "That's right. A Mr. Smith said to put the bill under his account."Liliana nodded. "Got it. Thank you."Adalee gave Liliana a curious glance. Judging by her reaction, she clearly knew the person. "Didn't you say you had never been to Cascade City before? How do you know someone here?"It was not until they got into the car that Liliana explained, "He's also from Brookville—a distant relative. I ran into him just now when I went to the restroom."Adalee nodded. Though she suspected things were not that simple, she did not press further.During their business trip in Cascade City, Adalee kept Liliana incredibly busy. Every day was packed to the brim, making
