Chapter 1985

Author: Chweety
Sean seemed to be busy on the other end. Liliana called several times without anyone picking up. When she tried again, someone finally answered, but it was a woman's voice.

"Hello?"

Liliana froze, momentarily unable to react. The woman spoke again. "Who is this?"

Then, it clicked. It was Joanna's voice.

Joanna had access to Sean's phone? She even answered his calls?

Liliana instinctively tightened her grip on the phone, her fingers trembling slightly.

Hearing no response, Joanna glanced at the screen. The contact was saved as "Little Brat", which made her gaze turn colder.

"Hello?" Joanna asked again, her voice icy. "May I know who's speaking?"

Liliana tried to keep calm and asked, "Isn't this Sean's phone?"

Joanna recognized her voice instantly, and her tone grew even more indifferent.

It was Liliana!

What exactly was the relationship between them that made Sean save her caller ID as that?

Jealousy surged in Joanna's chest. She let out a light laugh.

"Yes… So, what do you

"Peter, I don't know why you're getting involved with Tania… but she's my best friend. Can you… treat her better?"Peter chuckled again.Liliana felt increasingly uncomfortable. Though she had not met Peter many times, it was not that few either—yet she had never seen him laugh. Today, she had heard him laugh twice already. Was what she said really that funny?"Liliana, Tania is my woman now."Liliana's face flushed immediately. She clenched her phone and replied, "I know."She was not clueless. She had already seen the marks on Tania's body. However, hearing those words directly from Peter's mouth brought her an odd sense of relief.Peter might be ruthless, but he had one trait—once he claimed something as his own and once it bore his mark, no one else would dare touch it.For him to say Tania was his woman, that counted as a form of protection, did it not?"Well… if there's nothing else, I won't bother you further.""Mm."Peter ended the call with a faint laugh. He had not

"No need," Sean replied, clearly impatient. This dinner was orchestrated by the Smiths, and Sean already understood Savannah's intentions. Joanna had just saved Savannah's life by chance, which earned her Savannah's favor. Now, Savannah was trying to matchmake Sean and Joanna. They had already had dinner together once before, and Savannah's intention could not have been clearer. However, Sean did not believe that a life-saving favor meant he should sacrifice his own happiness—especially when he did not even like Joanna.Clearly, though, Savannah and Joanna were not ready to give up. Just today, right after he had finished an operation, Savannah called and insisted he meet Joanna for dinner.Sean rarely turned Savannah down, but he figured his attitude was already obvious. Unfortunately, neither Savannah nor Joanna seemed to get the message. His long fingers tapped rhythmically against the table, his gaze frosty. He looked completely different from the playful man who had joked wit

Joanna looked at Sean, her heart slowly sinking. Why did he have to be so heartless?"I've liked you for five whole years, Sean. Five years! I fell in love with you the moment I saw you in my freshman year. I don't believe that in all these years, you haven't felt a thing. Sean, I never knew that loving someone could feel so blissful and yet so painful. I... I really love you.""You love me? And because you love me, I'm supposed to love you back?"Sean no longer had the slightest interest in staying to finish the meal. He pinched the bridge of his nose with those long fingers."I'll say it again—I don't love you, and I'll never marry you. You'd better let go of this fantasy. If you keep doing things like this, I won't be so patient next time."He called over the waiter to pay the bill. The waiter, surprised that he wanted to leave even though the food had not arrived, hesitated.Sean handed over a card with his usual calm. "She'll be eating.""Yes, of course."The waiter took

"Are you crying?" Sean noticed the change in Liliana's voice. "Did someone bully you?"He thought of how she used to hold back tears as a child when others bullied her. His heart tightened. "Liliana, where are you? I'll come find you.""No need, I-I'm fine. I just accidentally tripped, that's all," Liliana quickly made up an excuse. "Really, nothing happened. No one bullied me.""Alright, that's good." Sean sighed in relief. "Then why did you call me just now?""I… It's nothing now." Since Peter had already said what he did, it meant Tania would not be in any danger.Sean frowned slightly. "Liliana, what is it really?"Hearing the sudden coolness in his tone, Liliana's heart tensed. She blurted out, "It's about my friend, Tania. I... It's not a big deal. Since you weren't available, I went to Peter myself. He said he wouldn't pursue what happened with Tania anymore."Though she spoke vaguely, Sean still raised an eyebrow. "Oh?"He had not expected someone like Peter, who usuall

Although Liliana had always kept an eye on Tania and Peter, it seemed that Tania was getting along quite well with Peter—almost as if nothing had happened. Liliana could tell Tania did not want her to worry, so she stopped asking questions about the two of them.As time passed day by day, Liliana's life remained relatively stable. Aside from her studies, she took on an additional part-time job. At the very least, there were not any major issues. She did not reach out to Sean on her own, but occasionally, Sean would take the initiative to contact her. Still, Liliana could see clearly that Sean only regarded her as a younger sister—nothing more. That Monday, just after the weekend, Liliana was called into her supervisor's office on her first day back to work."Liliana, get ready. We're flying to Cascade City tomorrow!""Cascade City?" Liliana was surprised and pointed to herself. "Me?"She was just an intern—why would they bring her on a business trip? Her supervisor, a sharp and

Several women continued speaking in flattering tones, all expressing envy over Joanna managing to work at Sean's hospital.Although Sean's hospital was a private institution, everyone knew how difficult it was to get in. While public hospitals were tough to enter, Sean's hospital was said to be even more selective, with incredibly rigorous recruitment standards.Sean had always been a legendary figure at Vista University. The university had practically placed him on a pedestal, often using his name for promotional purposes. Which student from Vista University did not dream of working at his hospital? However, it was so hard to get in that Joanna's success stirred nothing but admiration.Joanna let out a soft, shy laugh, feigning modesty. "Don't say that. I actually got in on my own merit. It wasn't because of Sean at all.""Right, right. Joanna's always been one of the top students in our department!" one of the women chimed in flatteringly. "Still, I really envy you. Finding a bo

"Ms. Cobb?""Mhm, Adalee was my student. If I didn't know her well, I wouldn't have recommended you to her." Sofia looked at Liliana's serious and focused expression."You're capable, but some personal matters affected your work recently. You'll be graduating soon. It's important to plan things out. Figure out what you want and how to get there.""Thank you, Ms. Chapman!"Liliana genuinely felt Sofia's concern. "I'll definitely keep your advice in mind.""Good, very good." Sofia nodded in approval, clearly pleased with Liliana's mindset. "By the way, that young woman who's often with you… Her name is Tania, right? How's she doing?""Thanks to you, she's doing well."Dinner went smoothly. Perhaps it was because Liliana realized she would soon graduate and that she would not have many chances to see the professor who had taught her for four years. After walking Sofia out, Liliana lingered by the roadside for a bit.Suddenly, a shadow loomed in front of her. Joanna's expression turned utterly sour. She had not expected Liliana to react that way. There was no admiration or envy, just a sharp, sarcastic jab that left her embarrassed. It was obvious Liliana meant to mock her, implying she had no authority to make decisions because she was not actually Sean's girlfriend.Joanna was furious with Liliana's attitude. She had thought that even if Liliana did not say much, she would at least show a bit of jealousy. Maybe she would act like her classmates earlier at the restaurant, casting admiring and envious looks her way.Liliana had no idea what Joanna was thinking at the moment, but if she had, she would probably think Joanna was out of her mind."Joanna, I've got something to do. I'll head off first."Liliana spotted a cab pulling up, waved it down, and got in before Joanna could even react.Joanna stood where she was, watching the car drive off with her fists clenched tightly. Liliana did not take any medicine. She just sipped some warm water and went back to bed.Her sleep was restless, filled with dreams of her childhood, the bullies, the schoolyard taunts, and Sean...Liliana could not help thinking she was a mess. Sean had been so clear about his feelings, yet she kept trying to get close to him. Was she really that pathetic? She was even dreaming about him.She slept the whole day, waking and sleeping in fits and starts. If Keith had not kept trying to call her, eventually coming over to check on her, Liliana might have been in real trouble. She would have been sick and alone in her apartment, with no one the wiser.Ever since Keith got home last night, he could not stop worrying. He had not heard from Liliana all day, and she had not answered any of his many phone calls. Finally, he decided to go see her himself. He rang the doorbell over and over, and just when he thought Liliana might not be home, she slowly got up from her bed and opened the do

Liliana felt a wave of guilt as she watched Keith being so thoughtful. She had never felt like that before. Even though she knew she did not love Keith, she was still with him. When Keith was so kind to her, all she could think about was Sean.Liliana felt awful, but she did not know what to do about it.Keith caught Liliana's gaze. Her eyes looked a little teary. "It must be the cold. Go on up," he said.Liliana sighed. After a long moment, she gave Keith his coat back and went upstairs.Keith stayed until he saw the light turn on upstairs. Only then did he leave.Once home, Liliana rushed to the window to check if Keith was gone. When she saw he had left, the uneasy feeling inside her grew. She pulled a pregnancy test from her bag and headed to the bathroom. As the seconds slowly passed, Liliana felt like it was the longest wait ever.Liliana's eyes widened as the second pink line slowly appeared on the pregnancy test. Keith spotted Liliana too. No one knew how long he had been there when he saw her step out of a car and freeze in place.Neither of them spoke. Liliana felt awkward. They were boyfriend and girlfriend, but it did not feel like enough. She knew Keith liked her a lot, and she had said yes to dating him. However, deep down, Liliana knew she was not being the girlfriend he deserved. Still, Keith was always so understanding.Just moments ago, she was in another guy's car, thinking about Sean.Seeing Keith just standing there and knowing the car was still behind her made Liliana feel like she was doing something wrong. She was torn about Sean but could not deny she liked how Keith treated her.Feeling more embarrassed than ever, Liliana gripped her bag, bit her lip, and managed a small smile. "Keith, what brings you here?"Keith had seen the car too. It had not left. As her boyfriend, he had a lot of questions, but he did not ask any of them. He just nodded. "I tried calling you, but y

Seeing Liliana still standing there, lost in her thoughts, Sean's anger flared. "Liliana, this is the last time I'm telling you. Get in the car.""How can I if you don't unlock the door?" Liliana said, feeling a mix of confusion and hurt.Even when she spoke, her voice was so soft. Next to Sean, she never seemed to be able to speak up confidently. It made sense, though. She was the one who had fallen for Sean first, and he did not love her back at all. She had always known that, had she not?Seeing Liliana looking so sad made Sean's heart clench, but he was getting impatient. "Look, I'm not used to playing chauffeur," he said. With that, Sean rolled up the car window. Liliana took a sharp breath and blinked in surprise at his words, but then she remembered he had not actually refused to drive her. She quickly opened the car door and climbed in.Once inside, she realized just how cold it was outside. She had only been standing there for a little bit, but she was already shivering.

Liliana's face turned even paler, but she could not deny Sean's logic. If something did happen to her, Charles would surely come after him. Even though her situation was awkward, she was still part of the Hoffman family. She was Tania and Peter’s guest today. If anything went wrong, Tania would surely hold Sean responsible, and Peter was Tania's boyfriend, after all.Thinking that through, Liliana almost laughed.Initially, upon seeing Sean's face, she had a tiny hope that he had forgotten their past and that they could go back to how things used to be.However, it was just wishful thinking. Sean was simply avoiding trouble, and since Peter had given him that responsibility, he was treating it strictly as a task.Liliana looked a bit pale as she pondered, and Sean noticed her unfortunate complexion. Despite that, she stubbornly refused to get into the car, and her face grew even more troubled. "Please get in the car," Sean urged. With a mix of emotions on her face, Liliana hesi

Liliana's arm throbbed where Sean had grabbed it, but she bit her lip, refusing to give in. "I didn't do it on purpose. I had no idea she invited you.""Oh, you didn't know? Isn't she supposed to be your best friend?" Sean's voice was edged with sarcasm. "Or maybe this was your plan all along?""I didn't!" Liliana felt a tightness in her chest at his accusation. She pulled her arm free from his grasp, her face twisted with both anger and shame. "I truly didn't know.""Who knows what the truth is?" Sean said with a light laugh, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "Tania doesn't know about us, and you think you're in the dark too? What if Tania found out who you really are? Would she...""Don't."Liliana's voice was loud and full of panic. "Please don't tell Tania." Deep down, she was being selfish. She did not want Tania to find out about her secrets. When she first became friends with Tania, all she wanted was a simple friendship. She did not want Tania to know about her embarrassi

Tania's lips quivered, as if she wanted to say more, but seeing Liliana so determined, she held back. However, as Tania paid, she leaned in and whispered something to the cashier, then scribbled down an address. "Make sure it gets here, okay?"Tania settled the bill, grabbed the shopping bags, and linked arms with Liliana as they headed out. "Liliana, you're joining me for dinner tonight!"No backing out this time. When Liliana returned from the restroom, she found not just Tania and Peter, but also Sean sitting there. Her first instinct was to turn around and leave. She was about to do just that, her foot already inching backward, when Tania caught sight of her. "Liliana, where are you off to?
