“This looks nice,” Mayeli said, pointing at a white three-step cake that looked beautiful.

Killian gave her a bored look that said, “Do whatever you want.” She had dragged him against his will to do the cake buying with her. Beautiful thing, he couldn’t say no to her.

Mayeli turned to the receptionist, a young woman in her early twenties. “Can we taste this?”

“Of course, Sir… Ma.” She had atransfiguredd smile on her face as she stared at Killian.

Mayeli felt the urge to wipe off the smile from her face.

Killian chuckled at her reaction.

He was enjoying the situation?

Mayeli glared at Killian, but in return he gifted her one of his charming smiles. He took the cake from the receptionist, cut a bit of it and gave it to Mayeli.

She smiled and ate the cake. It tasted lovely.

“How’s it?” Killian asked.

“It’s good.”

Killian tastes the cake himself and nods. “Seems like something I can easily beat.”

“You bake?” The receptionist asks Killian, still smiling, this time seductively.

Killian is dead.“It’s been a month now, Mayeli, and you’re still not eating well. You’re barely visible; all I can see are bones and dark circles. I know he meant the world to you, but how long would you keep this way? Everyone is worried and your daughter is broken too, and I know you’re trying to be there for her, but you need to look out for yourself too…” Doctor Andrea was speaking, but she wasn’t listening. She hardly ever listened this day.“Mayeli!”Mayeli’s eyes flickered open. There was Andrea, disturbing her peace again. She pulled the sheets around herself tighter, not wanting to be spoken to. Bryelle was lying beside her on the bed in a deep sleep. She hadn’t slept like that for weeks since Killian died.“What do you want?” Mayeli asked Doctor Andrea, her voice barely a whisper.Andrea walked into her room with a smile. “I left earlier because you fell asleep. The chefs told me you and Bryelle ate a few minutes ago. I’m so happy. It means you’re getting better. How’s Brye

Playing Malibu Nights by LANY as I write.Mayeli wandered along the trail near a pond from the melting snows of winter. The sky was crystalline blue, the air cool. She filled her lungs with it and held it for a moment before letting it out slowly. Two bluebirds flitted overhead, dipping and swirling in a joyful dance to the hint of spring. It was midweek, mid-afternoon, the ides of March. Five days short of the first day of spring. Killian died on this day, just a year ago. He had betrayed her, leaving her to raise their child on her own.He had left a message, that was the last reminder of his lovely voice. “I’m so sorry, my sweetheart. Mayeli, I wish I had done better, given you all the nice treats and treated you like the princess that you are. I’m sorry I hurt you so much, my love. I feel like a mess right now because I know I’m only hurting you more. I don’t have much time, so I’ll say this.I’ll always love you, my princess and I hope we get to meet in our next life. I promise

Mayeli’s black Audi was the only one in the reserve parking area. Nixen found her keys in the ignition and her white Chanel purse still sitting on the front seat.“Oh gosh, Mayeli,” he whispered repeatedly, his heart pounding.Retrieving the keys and her purse, he tossed them into the trunk of his car for safekeeping. If she tried to take off, he didn’t want her to go too far. At least he can comfortably chase her on foot.He strode along the lonely and quickly darkening trail, looking for her. What was she wearing? He only cut a glimpse of her this morning. They had not talked much since he had wanted to go to work and he had an important case to settle. He stood for a while to think. His brain was all over the place, but he needed to concentrate. She had been wearing a straight denim skirt, lace-up black ankle boots, a white sweater, and a dark blue parka.Jumping the creek, he ran along the trail beside it. The steam snaked toward the west. He followed it for a half mile before he

“Bryelle, can you please leave the bathroom?” Mayeli screamed at the top of her voice. It was hard to believe that her baby was already twelve years old. She was growing so fast and beautiful. She was amazingly smart too, just like her father. She easily topped her class and received a glowing recommendation from her tutors. She was already starting to have male crushes and spend so long in the bathroom, sometimes she wanted to apply make up too.Mayeli chuckled. She and Shaila had been worse than Bryelle when they were kids. She wondered how her mother had handled both of them.“I’m coming, Mom. Almost done!” Bryelle’s voice came from her bathroom.Mayeli carefully placed the black dinner gown she had brought up for her on her beige bedsheet. Unlike the usual girl, Pink, Bryelle had a unique love for beige. Her room was painted beige and white, and most of the celebrity posters hanging on her walls all matched the colour. Her room was always neat, tidy, and arranged, just like Killia

Mayeli climbed out of her white Bugatti Centodieci and locked her car. She was wearing a baggy black jean and light green sweatshirt over it. Her hair had been left to fall down her back. She stared at the huge supermarket and immediately felt mentally tired. Shopping for groceries was not her thing. She had mostly left it to Nina or Killian when when he offered to help. But she had given Nina and the other staff a week’s leave so now she was stock with the task. Buy groceries or starve the house! She had just two choices.Mayeli laughed at her laziness and headed for the entrance of the supermarket. Kreed had promised to assist her and he was going to be here any moment. She entered the supermarket and headed for the beverage section. Bryelle had wanted a new product because it something about a glowing skin. She picked two packs of the weird looking beverage, and turned to go, when her eyes caught a glimpse of someone. He ducked quickly when she turned to stare at him.Mayeli felt h

Mayeli took in the view of Hôtel Fouquet's Barrière as she and Nixen walked in, arms entwined. Her Mom, Shaila, and Bryelle were already waiting for them at the private suite Nixen had managed to reserve for them. It was one of the most popular hotels in paris and getting a reservations was more than a big deal.It was her birthday though, she deserved it.Mayeli smiled as she read the banner hanging on the entrance door of the suite.Welcome to your glamorous forty, our beloved Mayeli. She didn’t consider it glamorous, though, but she was grateful for the effort they had put in to make her happy. She had woken up thinking about what Killian had done on her last birthday with him, and her mood had turned sulky for most of the day. She’d probably still been lying in bed if Bryelle had not forced her out.Nixen led her to her seat at the head of the table and took the one opposite her.“Happy birthday, Mom, I love you,” Bryelle said, handing her a wrapped present.“Thank you, my love.”

Diora walked towards where Mayeli was sun bathing in her pool bench. She was wearing a blue bikini that showed off her flattering curves and blended with a glowing skin.Mayeli smiled. Diora had gotten even more gorgeous. What motherhood does to you! She could barely believe that are friend was married with a child already. It had been forever, and Mayeli was glad she was here, though not entirely because she had been nagging the whole time.Diora placed the glass of orange juice she had gone to get on the small stool beside Mayeli. “You’re not seriously getting married to him, Bess. Are you?”Mayeli chuckled. “There’s nothing wrong with Nixen, maybe you should give him a chance.Diora rolled her eyes, looking angry. “Give him a chance? Have you forgotten, Mayeli, or do you just want to pretend it didn’t happen?”Heid’s brows furrow. “What do you mean?”Diora sighs. “First, he is still a suspect for being Unknown, who we all think is responsible for Killian’s death. Mayeli walked to the her sitting room to meet Nixen who was waiting for her with their wedding planner. The woman was a young and beautiful twenty-three year old with lovely auburn hair and dreamy brown eyes. She blushed each time she looked at Nixen and was sitting a bit oo close to him.Mayeli chuckled to herself. She didn’t feel any anger or jealousy watching the woman’s flirty moves. We, Killian, she had always felt fierce jealousy when women came too close or tried to get his attention. She had asked herself severally why she was marrying Nixen, but the answer had always been simply the same. Because she wanted to.She had no great reason to justify her action, nor did she need to have one. Just a few minutes ago, while she was preparing to come downstairs, she had received a message from Diora, apologizing for yesterday, and saying they’d talk more about it.Diora didn’t understand, and Mayeli was tired of explaining. She had no reason to explain either. It was her decision and

Kreed laughed and stood up. He picked up the baseball bat he had been holding and threw it to Tyse.“Beat Killian to death with it, and I’d let you live. You did nothing to offend me, did you?”Mayeli’s eyes widened.“What?” Tyse asked.“You know it’s either you or him, right? Or mostly both. So why don’t you save yourself?”Mayeli thought of what to do to buy time. Of course, no one was coming to save them, since Kreed said he had taken care of the police, but she had no other option. She couldn’t watch what was about to happen. She’d rather die first.“Kreed, when did you become this evil? There’s still a way out of this, you don’t have to commit more murders.”Kreed laughed for a long time, and when he stopped, he faced Mayeli. “The day your father burnt down my family, he created an unrepentant monster. I only trained the monster. First I worked with the CIA, then with the FBI, then as a special intelligence security agent, and when I was convinced I had learnt everything I wanted

Mayeli and Killian turned to see Kreed standing a few feet from them. He was wearing the same outfit he had been wearing this morning before she had left him. Black turtle-neck top, black trousers, black boots and a dark brown long coat. But this time there was something different. He was wearing black gloves. But that wasn’t it. What was he doing here? How did he know she was here? She told no one.Kreed took a step forward, and Killian immediately reached for his pocket.Kreed was faster. “Let me borrow your words. I won’t dare if I were in your shoes because I’ll shoot you down without hesitation. Now rid yourself of your weapons and don’t try to play smart.”Killian did as he was told.Mayeli couldn’t believe her ears. This was Kreed, right? Or did he have a twin? Or perhaps was this a replica of him? Or cloning? She didn’t understand. Why was Kreed pointing a gun at them?“Kreed. What’s happening? I don’t understand.” But Mayeli was beginning to understand. She recognized the loo

“You should drive faster!” Killian barked at Tyse.“At this rate, we’d probably die in an accident before we get to her,” Truce screamed.Killian turned to him. “Do you deserve to live?”Truce shook his head. “No. Tyse, drive faster!”He was still mad at his friends for abandoning Mayeli when he was away for the stupid reasons they gave. He had trusted them to take care of her while he was away, but they had done just the opposite. They had begged and apologized severally, but he wasn’t forgiving them yet. He’d make them work for their forgiveness, and so far, they’ve been doing just that.“Maybe you should take the wheel!” Tyse barked at Truce. “I’ll drive faster, Killian,” he replied, Killian with a smile.“If that bitch, Shaila so much as touch my woman, I won’t hesitate to strangle her with my hands”, Killian said through his teeth. How could he have missed the signs? He had known Shaila wasn’t the sister she pretended to be, and he had known she was still obsessed, but he didn’t

“I don’t understand,” Mayeli said, carefully. Shaila was getting drunk, and Mayeli feared what she would do to her. At the moment, she wasn’t the woman Mayeli had known all her life, she was a wounded animal seeking blood.“I met Killian in our second grade. He was two levels higher than me, so we never really talked. Everyone loved him, everyone wanted him, and I wanted him more than any of them. And one day, I went home after school and he was with his parents in our house. Father had introduced them as his friends and ours, and had told us they were going to have dinner with us.I still remembered how overjoyed I had been that day. I had asked my maid, Nisha, to make me the prettiest little girl ever, and during dinner, I did everything to get Killian’s attention, but he didn’t care. He didn’t even notice my hair or dress or anything, but I didn’t give up. After dinner, he talked to me, he told me my dress was pretty and he liked my tiara. I was so overjoyed that I couldn’t sleep t

Mayeli typed Killian’s office floor number on the elevator keypad, 67.She could hardly wait as the box took her upwards. She hadn't met Killian since that day at the mall and she couldn't wait to see him. Her heart was racing already, and she could feel a hunger in her lower belly, a hunger he had awakened. The elevator stopped and the doors slid open. Mayeli stepped out eagerly, heading for the last building on the floor. When she reached, she rang Killian’s office doorbell. No one answered. She rang it again, but nothing. Thankfully, she knew the key pass.“I'm coming in,” she said, and pushed the door open. Surprisingly, the office was empty. The office was just the way Mayeli remembered, the same. White high walls, one glass wall showing off the breathtaking view of the City of London, a large oak table and a chair behind it and two in front. A mini-parlour of four black cushions and a white table, and lastly a glass shelf holding Killian's books, magazines, trophies, and aw

Mayeli braided the last strand of her sister’s hair slowly, listening to Bryelle’s tale of her latest BTS crush, Jungkook, and laughing. Her daughter was crushing on celebrities already.“I have a shoot with V soon, he might not be your favourite, but you should come,” Shaila said.Bryelle shook her head. “I want just him, no one else.”Shaila laughed. “Suit yourself.” She turned to Mayeli. “Be fast would braids, babe, I need to be somewhere soon.”Shaila had been going out more frequently recently, and she never said where she was going, no matter how many times Mayeli asked. Mayeli decided to let her be. She would come around when she wanted to.The doorbell rang, and Bryelle went to get it. She returned a few minutes later.“Mom, it’s Kreed.” She walked past them into her room. Shaila turned to Mayeli with a stupid smile on her face. “Your husband is calling.”Mayeli frowned, tossing her hair behind her. “His not my husband, stop with the joke.”Shaila laughed. “I have somewhere t

Killian covers the distance between him and Mayeli. She looked so flawless, so beauty more than he had remembered. Just a glimpse of her took his breath away, just a glimpse of her rose his hunger so intense that he hardly had control over it.He covered her slim waist with his arms and took in a breath of her.“Killian?” She called, her voice shocked. “Is this real? Am I hallucinating? How’s this even possible?”She started to check his body. “Are you real? Are you hurt or burnt?” Tears were already flowing down her pale cheeks again. “How’s this possible. Am I losing it?”Killian knew she had too many questions, but he couldn’t explain, not yet. He was here to warn her and he didn’t have much time.He turned her to face him and almost regretted it when his eyes fell on her fleshy, exposed, full and ready for him. He shook his head; just being near her drove him crazy, and it had been so long. He had watched from a distance and longed for her, but it wasn’t yet time. He had to think

“You should be careful,” Kreed said, helping Mayeli out of the car.Mayeli chuckled. “I’m careful as I am. You’re the unnecessarily worried one.”He had been fusing over her for months now since she got out of bed. She was fine now, but he won’t leave her. He was always by her side, and sometimes she wondered when he had time for himself.Bryelle came to Mayeli’s side. She pecked her. “I’ll see you later Mom, my friends are waiting.” She ran off before Mayeli could say a word. They were meant to eat dinner together after shopping for clothes, but she had come up with excuses that she had to meet up with her friends.“She’s growing up so fast,” Kreed said, laughing.Mayeli turned to him. Today was his girlfriend’s birthday, but he had been with her all day. “Aren’t you going to meet Sonia?”The smile faded from Kreed’s handsome face. “We met before I came by this morning.”Mayeli sighed. She knew Kreed had feelings for her, but she had no way to confront them. She wasn’t interested in

Mayeli slowly opened her heavy eyelids and tried to understand her environment. The smell of anthesptic filled her nostrils and her lungs burned. Her throbbed and her body felt as stiff as a log of wood. She tried turning, but her body had a mind of its own. The bright light streaming from the windows blinded her weak vision. She recognized the room after a while, it was her room, but why was she strapped to a bed, and why were there several equipment attached to her body? She couldn’t move or think; her whole body throbbed. The door opened and a familiar face walked in. She looked older, though. Mayeli tried to remember and slowly, her memory returned.Bryelle, her daughter. She tried to call her name, but her voice came out as a low whisper; even that effort was painful. Bryelle rushed to her side. She was wearing a short black skirt and a pink jacket. Her was packed in a high bun. She looked different, dazzling, and all grown up, not the little girl Mayeli had known.“Mom, you’re
