Chapter 4

I wake to find my entire body heavy and sore. I try and sit up but is met with searing back pain and decide to lay down again. I rub my eyes seeking clarity and when they adjust to the light I see that I am in a hospital.

I look to my right seeing my arm hooked to an IV and cringe. I hated needles, nothing that intimidating looking should penetrate skin.

Looking at my arm I see blue bruising along the inside, my ankle is killing me along with my back and head. I did fall a few times trying to get into the tree and I suppose dragging the bear was not agreeing with my ankle. If I get on that scale and I am not lighter after all this I am ending bear man myself.

A lady that I assume was a nurse walked in, “ oh, good your awake. Everyone has been waiting.”

I furrow my brow…’everyone?’ I had no identification on me, who could possibly be waiting for me. Also thank god I was taken to a hospital and the buff boys didn’t murder me out in the woods. What the hell was I thinking relaxing and passing out like that. Not that it seemed much of a choice but still. I had always been the cautious type.

The nurse walks back in with the doctor. The doctor smiles at me and says “thank you”.

“For?” I go to ask and she simply smiles.

Odd.

“I am Doctor Anders, you were dehydrated and exhausted when you came in, you have minor injuries and a sprained ankle that should heal in a few weeks. How is your pain?”

“Okay” I say and she writes on her clipboard and hands the nurse a paper, she nods and heads off.

“If you are feeling up to it then you have some visitors.”

I nod and she turns to leave. I close my eyes and sigh before attempting to sit again. I hear loud boots hit the floor and then a group of buff men coming into view. I recognize the biggest one as the middle buff dude from last time and he sees me struggle to sit up.

I gasp as pain hits my ankle, he comes over and helps by lifting me a bit under my arms before putting my pillow up behind me. Another man walks to the foot of the bed and places a pillow under my ankle for better support.

What the fuck is happening? I guess anyone else would have been flattered but I visibly push back up against the head of the bed uncomfortable and wanting to back out of the situation. This is not normal, I am no fool and there is nothing in life that does not come at a cost.

All the men stop at once and seem to back up a bit. One looking down almost hurt and I am even more confused.

“We have no intention of hurting you miss”, middle guy says. “We are only concerned and trying to ease your discomfort”. He concluded.

“Why?”

The men all look to one another and middle guy smiles at me. “You are not one of us, yet you push yourself to your limit to try and save him. To us it is an act beyond measure.”

Us? “Oh this is because of the bear?” I say before thinking.

“No wolf.” One man goes to answer and I furrow my brows at him. Middle man glares at him and he looks down.

“I might have seen some in the woods, thought they would eat us when I hid us in a tree.” I go to answer and the man looks up again with renewed enthusiasm.

“Is that so?” middle man askes and I nod.

“They were very big and the bear had bled a lot so I was sure they would find us, but I suppose slipping and being completely covered in mud helped cover the scent of us.” I say looking at the men.

Middle man approaches me more and asks “What bear?”

“Obviously the huge guy I dragged!”

Middle man bursts out laughing, others snicker and a few looked worried.

“I will be sure to inform him of his new title as the bear.” Middle guy said and I am relieved to hear he is alive.

“Is he okay?” I ask and he nods, “the alp…. He is a very strong man.” Middle man said and I see some of the other men visibly puff out their chests.

The fuck? I raise an eye brow and dismiss the odd behavior.

“Where am I?”

“At our hospital, we are a small community. We mostly keep to ourselves.  There aren’t many roads in and out so we don’t get very many visitors. We work around the town and own most of the businesses but everyone resides here.” He answers.

Jesus it’s a cult, I helped a cult! The bear being the biggest among the buff club is most likely the leader. They are thanking me for bringing back a bad guy. I school my face as neutral of emotion as possible before giving a smile and asking how long I have been out.

They answer two days and I feel anxiety build within me. I need to leave this shit show and go back to where the normal people are as soon as possible. I look to the men, not sure if they will let me leave and worry about the situation I have found myself in.

“Mind if I lay down and rest for a bit, my head is killing me?” He nods and the men start to leave.

“I will call the nurse to help you, see you soon” Middle man turns and leaves, halting just outside the door. He looks back with a smile and says, “Should you need anything ask the nurses to call Alec.” I nod assuming it’s his name.

The nurse helps me to the bathroom and I shower before throwing on some clothes the nurse put down for me. Black leggings, socks, a plain white shirt with panties and a bra that is a bit too small. Boobs spilling out at the top I sigh and just pull the shirt over.

Passing the mirror I see my reflection and ponder making myself more presentable but decided against it, I have no intention of grabbing myself a man in this freak show, no matter how good looking they may be.

  • The Calling   Chapter 34

Chapter 34 Hadley Alucard raises a brow at my statement and I retreat to my nervous tick and fiddle with my fingers. I hope he doesn’t pick up on the light shake in my body. “I told her that I knew you would want to help us with the information we needed. The rogues don’t leave any scent and seem to disappear after every attack, they kill more people every time.” Zylith informs and that seems to catch his attention. His eyes dim and he straightens, “I would like a bit more detail.” He walks off halting just outside the door, “I will wait for you in my study.” He doesn’t wait for a reply and walks off. Zylith comes over to me taking my shaking hands into her steady ones. “Are you okay?” I quickly nod yes, “He scares me, I didn’t feel this scare with Cain and his people.” Zylith gives me a soft smile. We go to the study after putting on our shoes and a jacket. Alucard is standing with a book in hand but doesn’t glance up, he already knew we were coming. He closes the book with a l

  • The Calling   Chapter 33

Chapter 33 Hadley What caught my attention most was his burning red eyes in the dark. The sight terrified me to the bone. This was different from the wolfs, they had a sense of warning and intimidation to them but from this man I only sensed death. “Alucard. It’s me, Zylith.” Zylith said in a strained voice before dropping to the floor in a heap. “The little human?” His voice was smooth and emotionless, with an elegant English accent. Old vampire dude with an English accent, doesn’t that just sound right? I didn’t miss how both Cain and him called us little humans. We are not little these supernatural people are just overgrown. “Yeah you old bastard,” Zylith answered chest heaving. “So why the hell would you go and grab me like that? Scared of a little human girl?” The lights lit up again and his eyes faded to a beautiful brown. His nails pulled back into his fingers and I saw him give her a small smile. The only emotion to show on his face. She through insults at him but he was

Chapter 32 Hadley That night we couldn’t sleep, we probably needed the rest but my stomach wouldn’t allow it, doing constant flips and I considered not going a few times. We dressed warmly and prepared ourselves for the trip as best we could. We dressed warmly and rummaged the closet for any comfortable walking shoes. Zylith still had the boots they gave her for searching with the patrol. It was around 2 am when the call manifested in sound and light leading from my bedroom all the way into the woods. “Are you sure we will be safe?” I asked one last time and Zylith promised it would be fine. I wrote a small note for Cain, telling him that we were leaving to do something only we could and that we would be back. At the end, I put a small sorry and signed my name. I have to say the glowing trail did make things a great deal easier. We sneaked into the hall and saw a different path from before leading to a section of the mansion we had not been. I told Zylith about the path, the cal

  • The Calling   Chapter 31

Chapter 31HadleyAttempting to sneak back into the lounge was a resounding failure. Everyone gave us knowing glances and after passing the mirror above the console table I knew why. My cheeks were flushed and my hair a bit messy. From my rose cheeks, erased lipstick and the fact that Cain and I had been all alone, it was pretty obvious what went on.Everyone chatted till late at night and I have to say, it was the most fun I had in a long time. It was a wonderful feeling being so accepted, feeling so normal. I couldn’t help but look over at Cain the entire night, he was all I could see.Everyone went home leaving Zylith, Cain and I alone in the mansion. Zylith went off to take a shower and get ready for bed. I walked over to Cain in the hall after Zylith left and in an act of bravery, I cautiously embraced him in a hug.He seemed surprised at first but very quickly relaxed into my embrace and wrapped me up in his arms. It was warm, he smelt nice and I don’t recall ever feeling so saf

  • The Calling   Chapter 30

Chapter 30CainI love seeing the effect I have on my little human, the bond causes intense attraction between two mates and she was no exception. I had my eye on her throughout the entire meal, why the hell was she so far away?Seeing her looking our way I just couldn’t stop myself from going to her, but I required an excuse to do so. I handed her the drink and couldn’t help but stare. She hated it, I took advantage of the opportunity to inch closer to her.‘I see things are going well.’ Alec’s irritating voice comes through the link.‘Fuck off,’ I reply curtly, irritation laced in my words at the unwelcomed interruption. They have intruded enough as is. I do not look away from Hadley for a second.‘I see Zylith is all but forgotten.’ He still continues through the link.‘That was a misunderstanding. She likes men.’ I say with a bit of smugness.‘Oh thank the goddess! The entire pack has been on edge. Alec shouts through the link and shortly after I hear almost every wolf in the room

  • The Calling   Chapter 29

Chapter 29 Hadley After explaining that Zylith was not the love of my life, Cain guided me downstairs to the others and I apologized for my abrupt and very rude exit. Everyone was more than understanding, kind even, which only made me feel like more of an asshole. Cain told me that we would all be having dinner after eight. Erica swept me away for the day. Alec and Avery abandoned me to the never-ending energy that was Erica. Does she never tire? God my feet are killing me and I felt like I have lost track of all time. Erica put me in a black dress that was far too tight, reaching knee length with it being longer in the back and long sleeves. The front was high reaching my collar bone, while the back ran low completely exposing my skin. This was too much I thought until I saw the underwear… what was even the point, I can see right through it? The heels were painfully high and after tripping over my own feet four times she gave in and let me have lower but equally pretty heels. The
