“Sign them. Sign the papers.” Samuel spoke in a monotone. I could not tell whether he was disappointed or sad. He sounded almost like a robot.

“But then your brother would take it all from you.”

He chuckled without. “Heather, I think that’s just karma. When I had it all at my fingertips, I ran. Now that I want it all back the most, it is the furthest away.” He sniffled dryly. “So choose your parents and don’t worry about me. I would still find a way.”

I let a few seconds fall before speaking. “And how about us? How about our relationship? What would become of us? Because if I sign those papers, I would be stuck in a four-year contract and I don’t think I would be allowed to see you.”

“Of course, we would see each other. Sterling has a girlfriend and would no doubt keep seeing her. No why shouldn’t you be allowed to see me? It all just has to be hidden from the public’s eyes; to keep the illusion of the marriage going.”

“Okay then. I guess that’s it, huh?”

Yup,” He replied, popping the p in the word. “Maybe I would be at the office when you both sign the papers. I’m sure mom and dad would want me there; to wave in my face all that I could have had.”

“Okay, Sammy. Bye.” My voice was small. “I love you,” I added before ending the call.

I then placed my on the bed and stood to my feet. Before heading to the bathroom to take a shower, I heard a knock at the door. I turned and walked in that direction. When I reached the door, I asked, “Who is it?”

“It’s Cece, ma’am…I mean, Heather,” She corrected herself quickly and I turned the doorknob and swung the door open slowly as I chuckled.

With the door now opened, I saw that she was not alone. A guard stood next to her. He gave me a small nod and I return it as if on instinct. “May we bring your things inside?” The guard asked.

“Oh, yeah, sure.” I got out of the way and the guard rolled my two huge suitcases inside the room. Cece walked in too along with a duffle bag that had more of my things.

Seeing them bring my things into the room just affirmed the fact that my whole life was about to change, if not already changing. I was scared and anxious. I was never one for change to begin with.

I liked routines and plans. I liked things going perfectly because I was a perfectionist. So the fact that everything was changing rattled me.

I was in another country. I was in another house that I would be living in for four years. I was about to be married to someone that was the twin brother of my boyfriend. So much was changing and I did not like it!

I would have to find a new coffee shop that would make my coffee the way I liked it. I would have to find a new route to run in the morning or when I’m stressed. I would have to find a new job!

Urgh!

“Do you like them here?” Cece asked as she placed the duffle bag on top of one of the suitcases; they were placed next to the bed.

“Yeah, of course,” I replied politely. I smiled at them even though my insides were slipping down into the pit of depression.

“Alright, then we would be on our way. Have a beautiful evening.” They both proceeded to walk out of the room. “Oh, you should also know that dinner is ready if you would like to eat.”

I shrugged lightly. “I don’t think I’m hungry. Thanks, anyway.”

I watched them leave and I closed the door. I glanced at my suitcases once more and the thought of me unpacking seemed too tiring. I walked past them and headed into the bathroom, which looked like it was pulled right out of a five-star hotel in France.

After brushing my teeth and taking a hot shower, I exited the bathroom with a heated towel around my body and one wrapped around my hair. I felt less stressed and calmer now.

I sat on the bed and proceeded to find someone comfortable to wear for the night from in one of my suitcases. After I had done that, I took care of myself by moisturizing and putting on my PJs, then I turned off the lights, lay on the bed, and fought very hard to find some sleep.

Though I spent a full hour laying in bed with my mind spinning and overthinking, I eventually found sleep. The comforting hands of the darkness wrapped around me and I was happy not being in the real world.

When morning came, the alarm clock blared loudly in my ear and I groaned as I opened my eyes. I was taken aback, this was a guest room, why was an alarm clock in here and set at an early hour like this?

“Who the hell puts a set alarm clock in the guest room of a house?” I mumbled in frustration as I used all of my strength to retire from my laying position on the bed to a sitting position.

“I do.” A voice startled me, causing any hint of sleep to flee from my eyes immediately. It was Sterling. He was dressed in a business suit that made him look like a banker. His hair was gelled to perfection and the smirk on his face irritated me.

“What do you want?” I sounded annoyed, and I was. I dragged my body off the bed, stood to my feet, and yawned.

“You need to get ready, Heather. It’s past eight.” He lay his back on the wall and then showed me what was in his right hand. “Which is why I brought this.” He waved the small alarm clock that was in hand.

I made a frustrated sound and rolled my eyes. “You are talking about the signing of the contract, right?” I scratched my hair and it felt so good.

“What else would I be talking about?” He scoffed the words out and retired from his position of laying his back on the wall. He paced the room slowly.

“Why does it have to be this early? It’s not like I’m going to run away.” I stared at him with dull eyes. “I’m not my best when I wake up this early.”

“Wh–what? This early? Heather, it’s past eight in the morning. It’s not like I woke you up by five in the morning.” Sterling made his case.

“Blah, blah, blah. Same thing,” I said in a nonchalant tone as I walked away from him and headed for the bathroom. I heard him laughing as I did.

“Okay. Good talk! I would be outside, in the living room, waiting for you!” He said a bit louder because I was now in the bathroom with the door closed.

As soon as I heard the door close, which signaled that he had left. I sat on the toilet, which was heated and very clean, and took a six to ten minutes nap. After that, I brushed my teeth and took a hot shower.

I was more accustomed to hot showers. I only took cold showers once in a while, they felt very extreme, in my opinion.

When I was done with all bathroom-related things, I walked back into the room, found a nice dress to wear, and wore it, put on light makeup, and did my hair. I let it fall to my shoulders freely.

I wore not-too-dramatic heels and less flashy jewelry. When I was comfortable and pleased with how I looked, I grabbed my purse and placed my phone in it. I then put on some perfume that reminded me of my mother, it was her favorite.

When I was officially done, I walked out of the room and headed down the hall before approaching the living room.

I could hear voices already. When I reached there, I saw that Sterling was with his girlfriend, Patty. “Seriously? You brought her when I’m about to sign a marriage contract between you and me? Don’t you think that would raise some eyebrows?”

“Well, good morning to you too, dear.” Patty chuckled. She stood to her feet and her revealing dress caught my attention. Her breasts were raised and were almost in full view. The length of the dress was also staggeringly short.

“Sorry, good morning,” I replied, and pressed my lips into a straight line.

Sterling was the next to stand to his feet. His cologne screamed billionaire. He buttoned up his jacket and then spoke, “Don’t worry, Heather. No one would suspect a thing. It’s not like she and I would be kissing and groping publically.” He laughed deeply and gave her a look.

“But if you want me to…” She bit her lip seductively, and Sterling’s face got flushed.

“Okay. Okay. I get the picture. Can we please leave now?” I turned my attention away from them and walked to the front door. I had not even had my coffee yet so seeing Sterling and his girlfriend being all sexy to each other was annoying.

Okay, maybe even with coffee they might still be annoying in my eyes.

When I was outside, my eyes landed on a very fancy vehicle. The man in a tux stood next to it. He opened the door and gestured for me to get in. I closed the distance between him and me and gladly got into the car.

The sooner I could get all this over with, the better. I was also looking forward to finding out how exactly my parents got caught in the web of the Willaims.

It took a full minute and some seconds for Sterling and his model girlfriend to get into the car. I knew that because I was staring at the time on my phone over and over. They sat next to each other and I sat on the left side, next to the door.

When the driver was behind the steering wheel and we all had our seatbelts on, the car began to move. The AC was on and the car smelt new. It was a very smooth ride to where we were going.

I was hoping that I would see Samuel there. Besides him, there wouldn’t be anyone there that I’d really know. My parents were not in the country yet, they would be arriving a few days later, so yeah.

The car finally came to a stop in front of a tall building made of glass. Sterling's side of the car was opened first so he and his girlfriend could get down before my side was opened.

When I got down, I was taken aback by the scene. There were reporters everywhere. Even photographers taking pictures of us. This was certainly not what I expected.

Even though my family was very wealthy, back in America, we were not treated like celebrities. We were just treated with more respect. But photographers and reporters? Come on! This was a little too dramatic if you asked me.

Sterling pulled me gently by his side and whispered to me, “Smile and look pretty. You look pale.”

I did as he asked even though I felt a bit uncomfortable. His girlfriend kept giving me death stares. When the posing was done, guards led us into the building.

“What was that? Is the contract marriage going to be public news?”

Patty and Sterling laughed lightly. We were now in an elevator. “Of course, it’s going to be public news. You’re getting married to a William, sweetie,” Patty replied.

“You got to be kidding me,” I mumbled under my breath.

The elevator then came to a stop. When the automated doors opened, Sterling led the way. Patty and I followed him to an office that was huge. From the view from the window, I could tell that we were on the top floor.

When we entered the office which looked like a conference room, my eyes fell on the few people that were there, but mostly on Samuel.

“Can we please have our seats so we can start?” A man spoke, his voice was a bit raspy. He was dressed in a business suit too. He was sitting next to Sterling and Samuel’s parents. I sat down next to Sterling behind the conference table. As Patty was about to sit down on the right side of Sterling, his mother spoke, “No, no, dear. Come sit over here. Sterling should not even be seen with you.” Her tone was cold. From that brief interaction, I could tell that she did not like Patty. And I don’t think Sterling’s dad did too because he was giving her some glares. She listened and walked to the other side of the table and sat next to Sterling’s mother who kept a careful eye on her. On the table lay three folders that had documents stacked in them. The stack did not look big though. “Hi.” Sterling’s mother waved to me as she flashed me a smile. She looked excited to see me. I smiled back in response, of course. “So to begin, I would like to introduce myself.” The man with the raspy v

The scene before me was not something that I would be forgetting anytime soon. My throat was dry like sand on a hot summer day and my eyes bulged from shock. Sterling had to pull me in his arms for me to notice that I was screaming. There on the bed lay Patty. But she was not okay. She was far from okay. She was dead; maybe even murdered from the way she looked. There was a huge kitchen knife in her chest and another one in her stomach. Tears blinded my vision for a few seconds before clearing. The sheets on the bed were soaked with blood and the room smelt like death. It was very traumatizing for Sterling and me. Soon, guards rushed into the room. They were all shocked as we were and tried their best to contain the situation. One of them called 911 and the other few entered the room with us and closed it for privacy. “Ho–how?” My voice broke. I was still sobbing. “She was okay. How did this happen?” I did not even recognize my own voice. Sterling released me from his arm and wal

I was sitting in a five-star hotel room a few blocks away from the mansion. I was not going to stay in that house again. I was not going to allow myself to be a target for any psycho. I did not need that kind of drama in my life. I did not even know self-defense, which made me even more nervous. I mean, my parents recommended that I take them a few years back but I was stubborn and told them no. Now I was lowkey regretting why I did not take those classes. I had told no one where I was except Samuel and I told him to tell no one. I did not need anyone trying to convince me otherwise to stay in this country or to stay married to Sterling. Whatever they had against my parents, I was sure we could figure something out. But putting my life in danger did not seem appealing. I heard a small knock on the door and I stood up from the bed and placed the tea that I was drinking on the coffee table. When I reached the door, I looked through the peephole and I saw Samuel. He was alone. I unl

“Yes, now we barely have enough to keep ourselves going but because of this marriage, our sins could be forgiven and everything could be made right again.” My mom sounded so sure. “It would all work out for our good if you just stay married to Sterling for the four years.” I scoffed lowly. Hold up. Let me get this right. You two got con by someone and lost a billion dollars just after you had merged with the Willaims?” “Yes, Heather. It’s simple as that,” My dad said numbly. He stood to his feet and placed his hands in his pocket. “We got conned. I mean, it has never happened to us before, but I guess there is a first time for everything.” “No. I feel like you two were set up.” I stood to my feet. I glanced at dad and a look crossed his face that disappeared just as quickly as it came. “By the Williams.” My mom laughed lightly. “Oh, please darling. Seriously? Why would one of the richest families in the world want to con us? Yes, a billion dollars is a lot but they surely have mor

When I was at the dining table, I reached for a glass of water and drank half of it down. I released a satisfied sigh when I was done and placed the glass back on the table. I glanced at Sterling when I began eating and he was just playing with his food. I cleared my throat lowly and then asked, “So, um…how are you holding up?” “Hmm?” He looked up at me as if I had just pulled him from another world and had no idea what was going on. “Oh, yes.” He nodded when he realized what I said. “Well, um…I’m trying, I guess.” He flashed me a sad smile. “I don’t think I ever told you sorry about her. About Patty.” I scooped some eggs and placed them in my mouth, chewing as I waited for a reply from him. “Oh, it’s okay. You never really knew her.” He chuckled very lightly and continued to play with his food. “And I don’t think you liked her either, so no worries.” He made a small sound with his mouth. “I–” I wanted to argue that he was wrong but that would be stupid because it was true, I cer

Sterling allowed me to enter the room first, so I walked in, followed shortly by him. The detective led us to the seats in front of her desk and then went around before sitting in her comfortable-looking chair. I sat down in one seat and Sterling sat down in the other one. It felt like we were here for a doctor's appointment and like the detective was the doctor that was either about to give us good news or bad news. “How are you two keeping up?” She purposely stared at me for a second longer, making me feel a bit uncomfortable. I had a small feeling that she thought that I was Patty’s killer and that I was covering it all up by bringing up Sterling’s ex. Or I was just overthinking since I could not obviously read her mind. “Uh, I’m hanging in there.” Sterling forced a smile and then glanced at me to say something. I pressed my mouth into a straight line before speaking. “I’m not okay, but I would be,” I said truthfully. They both stared at me for a few seconds longer than

Sterling had parked the car right in front of the barbwire fence. He turned the engine off and then unfastened his seatbelt. When he was done with that, he opened the door, and before getting out, he glanced at me. “Are you not coming? I’m sure you would want to keep a close eye on me before I land myself in prison, right?” His tone was a bit hard. But I did not care. I did not care whether his tone was hard or not. He was not supposed to be here. And if Patty’s parents saw him, who knew what would happen? I think it was best that I go along, that way if anything happened, I could help de-escalate the situation if need be. Sterling waited for me as I placed my phone in my purse, unfastened my seatbelt, and got out of the car. When I was out, he did the same by getting out too before closing the door of the car and locking it with just one press of the key in his hand. I am not going to lie, I was very nervous. “Hi, sir. I’m so sorry for your loss.” Sterling walked closer to the man and extended his hand for a handshake. I was so nervous for him. The man chuckled dryly. “Get out.” His voice was calm. “Get out before I call the police.” He avoided Sterling’s hand, walked right past him, and headed to his wife. “What are they doing here? Especially after what we now know,” He asked his wife in a tense whisper. “I–I um, they came to apologize and to give their condolences.” “Well, they can give them elsewhere. Have them leave and I’m seriously going to call the detective.” His tone was hard and serious. “I think we should leave.” I tried to touch Sterling but he flinched away. “No,” He said firmly and my heart dropped. “I did not kill Patty. I loved her with every fiber of my being! I gave every part of myself to her and the only reason I’m even now married to Heather was to secure a future for Patty and me!” He lashed out.“Sterling,” I warned him. My heart was pounding and I stood up from the chair and breathed out a labored sigh. I stared at the screen on the computer and it was still loading. There was literally one minute remaining and waiting for the one minute felt like torture. I knew that the guys that the IT guys had sent were already on their way, and that made me even more anxious. “Come on, come on,” I repeated to myself like a mantra as I stared at the screen of the computer. “Come on!” I yelled and then the countdown started. There were only forty seconds left. “Excuse me, ma’am, would you kindly step away from the computer?” One of the guys said as he entered the office with two more guys with him. My heart dropped and it was like everything was in slow motion for a few seconds as my brain tried to process everything that was happening. Then my mind resumed back into real-time. I turned in the direction of the computer and quickly pulled out the small device expertly. The screen of the computer went back t

It was the next day and the morning was beautiful. The sun was shining brightly in the sky and the birds were chirping away. The air was warm and the smell of pancakes lingered. Sterling was dressed in a really nice black business suit and a red tie. His hair was styled to perfection and he looked really good. He smelled really good too. I watched him as he admired himself in the full-length mirror until he turned and locked eyes with me. “How do I look?” He asked as he flashed me a gleeful smile. “Hmm, okay, I guess,” I replied to him as I shrugged. I walked past him and checked myself up in the mirror. I was wearing a beautiful red dress that was a bit short. It stopped me right above my knees. I allowed my hair to flow down my shoulders and I even did my make-up. I was a bit skinnier than I usually was because of everything that had been happening but I looked really good regardless. I turned back in his direction and asked, “How do I look?”“Smoking hot!” He did not miss a be

The car radio was playing a popular African song as Sterling and I were being driven to the hospital. It was a few minutes past midnight and the windows were rolled all the way up, as the AC blasted, producing cold air. Sterling and I were sitting in the backseat and the one who was driving was Zack. I could not stop my heart from racing and maybe would have had a panic attack if Zack was not there with me. “You look nervous,” Sterling pointed out and then chuckled. “You should not be if you’re telling the truth about your dad being at the hospital.” He smirked and then tried to touch my arm but I pulled away from him. “I’m not nervous, I’m just pissed that you think I’m lying and that you’re dragging me out at this hour because you’re insecure,” I said in response and he made a small throaty sound before looking out the window. I caught Zack glancing at me from the rearview mirror, there was worry in his eyes and I was praying that he would come up with some kind of plan to get m

My heart dropped and I swallowed as I tried to compose myself. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” I stood to my feet and still held the device behind me. “I’d suggest you leave, I would like to be alone.” The guard stared at me as humor danced in his eyes. “Let’s talk outside, hmm?” He smiled lopsidedly. I furrowed my eyebrows and scoffed. “There is no way I’m walking even two steps with you.” I kept my eyes on him and kept scanning his body for any kind of weapon. My mind kept asking the same question over and over and I could not get it to stop. It kept asking, “Is this guy going to kill me because he knows what I have?” “Will you calm down for a second?” He chuckled and ran his hand through his wavy brown hair. He took a few steps closer to me but I backed away in caution. “I’m Zack.” He extended his hand for a handshake but I only stared at it. “Okay? The AC was on in the car and even outside was cold but after Sterling asked me, I felt hot. I looked everywhere but at him, refusing to make eye contact with him. I fidgeted with the tips of my hair and my mind reminded me of what to say. “Was I not clear on the phone?” I asked him boldly, despite how wildly my nerves were. “The accident happened out of nowhere. A billionaire helped my dad and me by taking us to the hospital.” “I know, I called the hospital.” He breathed out a short sigh. “There is a record of you being there.” “Then why are you pressing me for information that I have already given you?” He stared at me for a few seconds and then chuckled to himself. “You know what? My bad, I’m sorry. I’m just a little paranoid. And you can’t blame me, can you? Considering the family that I come from.” He reached for the steering wheel. He pressed on the gas and we were on the move in no time. “It’s okay,” I brushed him off as I release a breath of relief before looking out the

We all watched my dad with pleasantly shocked expressions on our faces. “Dad, are you for real?” I asked him, and he chuckled as he nodded slowly. “The truth is I actually forgot about that until now. She took her laptop and typed on the keyboard a couple of times before handing it over to my dad. “Is that for him to log in?” Daniel asked as he stood to his feet and walked from behind his desk. Patty nodded as she sat on the other side of the couch. I was sitting on the left side of him so I had a great view. Daniel and his colleague soon joined us and had to stand but it was worth it, of course. My dad used the laptop to log in to his email account and in a full minute, the display showed a bunch of emails; it was now logged in. There were a lot of new emails but the main one that we w

When I got down, my dad followed shortly after and we were led into the building. We got a lot of stares when we reached the lobby. Almost everyone was staring at us. It made me feel a bit uncomfortable and I was trying to weigh if being here was better than going back to America. We finally had the chance to get back to our old lives, but we were pulled right back into the drama of the Williams. It was the next day; all our bags had been packed and were being placed in the back of one of the many cars parked in the compound. My dad and I were standing on the porch as it drizzled. The air smelled of wet soil and the clouds were dark and gloomy. We had an hour to get to the airport so we could check in. I could not believe that we were finally leaving London. But it was indeed happening. What made my spirit heavy and my heart bleed was that I was going back to America without Samuel. It pained me that I was going to go back to our apartment and get to sleep on the bed that we had been sleeping on for years. I was pretty sure that that apartment had a lot of reminders of Samuel. His scent on the bedsheets, his clothes in the closet, his favorite cereal in the cabinet. There would be so much that would remind me of him. I wished that I had the guts to take Sterling down. I wished that I could continue to try to vindicate Samuel and give him the justice that he deserved. But I

Even though they left the room, I could still hear them mumbling right outside of the closed door. “Sterling, you promised to let us go. Please do as you have promised.” I locked eyes with him. “He won’t,” My dad scoffed the words out. “He scammed us. He tricked us into doing his bidding. Now, he is going to do whatever the hell he wants.” He stood to his feet and paced and walked towards me. “Glad to see that you have no faith in me.” Sterling chuckled. “You two have nothing to worry about.
