Rafael stepped out of his car and so did five armed bodyguards from the two black cars that were following him.
"Ruhi, enough with your tantrums! I haven't complained even one bit about this morning." He followed her as she click-clacked her heels extra hard against the concrete floor when she heard the word 'tantrum'. She spun around when he caught up to her.
"I wish you complained. Instead of saying one or two classic jerk lines and be done with it, you are acting passive aggressive ever since the phone call. Is it my fault if you can't use those big eyes of yours with extra-long eyelashes to find me at the mall entrance? I was starving and was about to eat lunch when you called, but you talk like only your time is precious. I got time off from work after one year of slogging and guess how I'm spending it?"
"Don't blame me for your problems since you were born, Ruhi. We could have reached the lawyer's office by now if you didn't enjoy listening to yourself talk so much."
"Well, if you were a good listener, it would have sunk into your busy brain that I ain't going nowhere with you."
She turned around to resume walking. He caught her by the wrist when she refused to stop. She was about to protest but was taken aback by how rough his hand was.
"Y-your hands?" She grabbed hold of his other hand, discreetly touched his palm with her fingers, and looked at him in shock. Rafael pulled his hand out of her grasp and released her wrist to stand at least a foot away from her.
"What about my hands?" He asked, looking at them to see what was so interesting about them. "Have I grown Wolverine claws?"
"They are very rough. I never saw anyone's hands feel calloused except my grandfather's. He was a farmworker."
Rafael sighed, wondering if she was going to start talking about her entire family tree. 'She will get butt hurt and cause even more drama if I cut her off,' he thought.
"Are you an imposter? Like the poor coal miner twin of the wealthy heir who is temporarily taking the place of the rich, spoiled brat and running the company in his absence?"
Rafael thought she was kidding, but her face looked darn serious like she was really considering it as the only possible explanation. He felt the chilly air blow the first few raindrops as they hit him in the back, and a large droplet trickled down the tip of Ruhi's nose, but she was oblivious to her surroundings.
"I guess you watch a lot of downmarket movies to come up with something so ridiculous. I lift." He said, running his thumb across his forehead to wipe off the rainwater.
"Lift?"
"I lift weights at the gym. God, Ruhi. Do you even have electricity in your hometown?"
She rolled her eyes. "You know you can't help being a jerk, don't you?" Her brows scrunched in annoyance. 'Did he get extra handsome suddenly? Is that even possible?' She wondered while watching him run his hand through his thick mop of hair and put it back on his hip.
"I don't have to be nice to you. It will only take me a second to let these men put you in the back of their car and drag you to wherever I need you at." Ruhi followed his gaze to see that his armed bodyguards were waiting for his instructions, standing only a few feet away from them. 'How long have they been standing there?' She was surprised.
She was so lost looking into his eyes and examining his hands that she didn't feel the icy raindrops beating against her face. She glanced at the men and remembered seeing one of them last night at the rooftop. She thought he was the bouncer at the club, not his bodyguard. Once she was done staring at them, she let out a peal of laughter.
Rafael crossed his arms and said in a firm tone, "I'll count to three and you are going to be abducted after that." "One..."
She ignored him and prattled on.
"I thought bodyguards looked unnaturally grumpy only in the movies. The one on the left looks like he is constipated. The one next to him is so pissed as if his wife took the remote away when he was watching a football game. Do you specifically look for men with such appearances to qualify during the interview?"
She asked while facing the men in black, not noticing Rafael approach her to wrap his arms around her waist and pick her off the ground. "This buzz cut one-- ahh, Rafael! Put me down!"
She wiggled around and wrapped her legs around his torso in the fear of being thrown into the car trunk. Subtle notes of his perfume, patchouli and bergamot, filled her nostrils when she leaned in closer and put her arms around his shoulders.
"Guess we will be here all night if I let you talk." He pushed away her wet hair sticking to his face.
One of his men opened the passenger door before he reached for it. He unhooked her legs from around him and shoved her inside his car.
"Why is your hair wet?" She asked as a drop from his damp hair touched her chin when he leaned down to fasten her seatbelt. She forgot to unwrap her arms around him.
"You are wearing a thick sweater and this skullcap to cover your numbskull. You would obviously not feel--" He paused without knowing when he saw her cup her cheeks in surprise and suck in a deep breath.
"They are cold and wet, I didn't notice." She said in a shaky voice, unable to look away from his lips. She chewed on her own lips nervously, taking in every subtle detail of his wet face from up close.
He ignored her words and what she did to her lips and closed the door.
"Why don't you have someone chauffeur you around as some rich folks do?"
"I love to drive. It's a great stress buster after work."
She suddenly missed her new car.
"I also--"
He cut her off, "Not when I have company and they refuse to shut up."
He sped on the freeway while the wind howled against them. She only heard of speed maniacs until then but was seeing one today. Watching him maneuver through the rain and traffic without braking or slowing down made her throat go dry in fear.
"You are giving me palpitations," she said, holding her breath.
"Good. Now I know I should tie you up in my car and race it on the freeway whenever I want to talk to you... um, need, not want. I'd never want to talk to you."
She didn't respond and diverted her attention to the dashboard instead of looking at the road and be terrified. Scanning for the local radio station, she stopped when she heard a LoFi version of Frank Sinatra's Fly Me to the Moon.
"Your phone is buzzing," he told her, unable to suppress a smile when he saw her scared face.
"Please look at the road." She almost begged him while fishing for her phone in the handbag.
She saw her sister's name and dismissed the call. Adira was being very nosy about knowing every single detail these days, and it was getting on her nerves. Soon it will be morning in India and her mom will also call her and reprimand her for not calling them back on the first day of the new year. She saw Dhruv's missed calls as well, and it dawned on her then that she hadn't thought about him even for once since Rafael called her.
A cold draft of wind hit her on the right and she looked up to see Rafael holding the door for her to step out.
"Oh..."
"You okay?" He smirked.
She ignored him and walked to the nearest elevator in the underground parking lot to push the button as if she already knew the place. How did she forget about Dhruv's existence? She hated herself for being the unfaithful one while she used to get mad at him all the time for merely looking at someone. Stepping into the elevator, she put her phone back into her purse without calling him as there was no reception in that part of the building.
Rafael followed her and pressed number 15 and waited, watching her feel uncomfortable and angry.
'God, what is she mad about now. I just need her to behave until she signs the papers,' he thought. His dad already found a backup woman to marry if things with Ruhi and her parents didn't work out. He rather choose Ruhi, who had a boyfriend and a solid reason to not want the wedding just like him.
The entourage of bodyguards and some other man who was from the law firm followed them as they walked into the law office suite.
"Mr. Emhoff will be available in just a minute. He's wrapping up with a client." The lawyer's assistant said as Rafael and Ruhi sat down on leather armchairs. She brought out some light refreshments and Ruhi's stomach growled in agitation.
She devoured the muffins and gulped down the coffee in the blink of an eye.
"Wow, she's quite a spectacle," Mr. Emhoff's lips curled up in a sarcastic smile as he whispered to Rafael, staring at Ruhi's outfit. Ruhi wiped her hand to her pants and extended it for a handshake.
"Save your remarks. Don't fuck this up," Rafael whispered back and jabbed his lawyer friend in the arm.
"I'm Eddy. It's very nice to meet you, Ruhi." He smiled warmly and set up two stacks of papers on his mahogany desk.
"The wedding is in nine days? And it's not happening in India??" Ruhi stood up in disagreement when her eyes fell on the first page of the contract.
"Why would it happen in India? I'm a third generation American and have no ties with India." Rafael realized she was going to make his lawyer rewrite the entire contract by nitpicking and blabbering about big fat Indian weddings and how each one of her friends got married.
He sucked in a deep breath and looked at Eddy helplessly.
"Miss Ruhi Bakul, I believe this is a forced marriage on top of being a secret contract one?" Eddy Emhoff smirked at Ruhi."Yes??" She raised her eyebrow at him. Rafael's lawyer friend appeared pretty sarcastic and mean to her."Why would it matter if the wedding happens in San Francisco or Siberia? It's fake.""It's still a wedding, and my first one. I even know the color of the saree I want to wear. In my mind, I have planned it many, many years ago. Also, there is this sacred banyan tree in my hometown thatevery newly married couple visits for blessings. I have to take my husband there too, fake or real. I made a promise.""You made a promise to the tree?" Eddy mocked her and looked at Rafael with a 'She's a nutcase' expression."Yes, I did. Don't make fun of the tree."Rafael couldn't believe his ears. He took the paperweight from the loosely stacked contract papers, aimed it at her head, and did a mock throwwhen she was
Rafael tapped Eddy's office door with a key card when Emma got up from her desk and rushed to him."Oh, Mr. Carvalho. You didn't have to do it." She fidgeted with her fingers nervously and looked at the signed and stapledbunch of papers."I want you to make two copies of these and have them sentover to me." He handed her the contract."One copy for me too." Ruhi chimed in."Ignore her. She won't be getting a copy.""Why n--" She swallowed the lump in her throat when Rafael glared at her the way his dad typically does—the kind of look that turns legsto jelly. He gave Emma the key card back and grabbed Ruhi by thearm. He pulled her roughly out toward the elevator. Ruhi was shocked at his sudden change of demeanor."Rafael?!" She protested against his steely grip."Stop saying my name. And stop talking." He pushed the elevator button to reach the lobby."So you were just playing nice until---"
After sucking the air out of Ruhi's lungs, Rafael let her go. Her face was on fire from the rush of blood and the realization of what just happened.Even though she was twenty-five and considered herself an independent woman, she panicked about her parents' reaction when she saw the reporters continue clicking pictures. Her entire family, extended relatives included, were going tobrand her a shameless woman with no values or self-control.And Dhruv will probably say the same and break up with her."What did we do?" She whispered to Rafael in a panic. "What did YOU do?""I was left with no choice but to shut your mouth." His voice was husky but irritated."I have a boyfriend! What am I---""They don't need to know that. You have no filters or tact."He ignored the crowd and picked her up in his arms. With the intimate contact and his pleasant perfume, it took all of her willpower to not nuzzle his neck and take i
Dhruv got ready for his first day of work at the new company. He was over six feet tall and sleeping on the couch left him feeling sore and grumpy when he woke up. Ruhiwas sleeping peacefully in his bed. He avoided looking at her andwent about his morning business as quietly as possible. He wanted to stay mad at her, and he was sure he would forget all abouttheir fight and forgive her if he looked at that innocent face. She looked the most innocent when she was quiet and sleeping. It's a whole different story once she wakes up and starts talking. He was conflicted between waking her up and showing her his new business casual attire versusignoring her. It will only hurt her and make her cry. Maybe she was telling the truth, he wondered. He always felt he didn't deserve her because his physical needs were stronger than his feelings for her, and he did not have the patience to wait for them to get married to have sex.She called herse
Later that evening at Dhruv's home"I thought about it all day today. I don't want to end our relationship." Dhruv told Ruhi in an affirmative tone."Oh, thank God." She ran toward him and engulfed him in a tight hug. "Because I need a HUGE favor from you.""A favor?""I went to meet Rafael's grandma today at their mansion. I can't go on with this wedding arrangement. Please get me kidnapped!""What? Are you out of your mind?! How will I do that?""You once told me your colleague in Atlanta knows someone who knows someone---""Those people come with armed weapons and can kill people. What if they actually kidnap you and sell you off or something? We don't want to get involved with dangerous people and complicate our lives.""Wedding with Rafael is even more dangerous. We don't have to stage a full-fledged kidnapping. I will just walk to the black car waiting by the corner of the street before the wedding, and y
"Do you remember Ruhi? You met her many years ago," her dad asked Rafael when they were done posing for a zillion pictures with her parents and cousins."I didn't know that until she told me," he said toher dad and then muttered under his breath, only audible to her, "That stupid little shit. How old were you then? Seven?""Aha! A limo!!" One of the cousins squealed in excitement as a sleek white limousinepulled over the tarmac with its bright headlamps illuminating her face.Ruhi and the others peeked in to see the soft lighting, plush extravagantleather, and state-of-the-art entertainment system."Oh, look! Another one is coming... I'll take the black one." Riya, Ruhi's favorite cousin, hopped in to admire the interiors."A third one is here. I think we will all fit in these three. You are also coming with us, right?" Ruhi's mom asked Rafael as a pearlsilver limo came to a stop behind the first two vehicles."
She waited in the shadows for the noise to die down. When she couldn't hear anything except the not-so-distant excited shrieks and howlscoupled withrelentless beats from the west wing, she sat down by the fountain, overwhelmed with guilt and sadness. If only she was getting married to Dhruv and not deceiving him or her parents. He was doing hisbest to help her, but shecouldn't think about anything except Rafael. Staying at his place and not being able to see him was driving her crazy."I'm a horrible person,"she whispered quietly and sobbed. Once she felt better, shetook long strides to run indoorsas the cold breeze blew past her."Ruhi...?" She heard amagnetic, deep voice that put knots in her stomach every time she heard him say her name.Rafael walked up to face her when she stoppedrunning. Every other detail of the place blurred as his face came into focus. The subtle notes of his perfume filled he
The waterfront indoor venue on the sprawling 240-acre private beach was a sun-soaked glass buildingset atop a cliff that offered sweeping views of thebig, Pacific blue ocean and kelp forest. The crashing waves and seagull chorus blended in with the ambient music and guests' chatter.Rafael had packed his wedding bags and arrived at the adjoining beach house to get ready with his best man and groomsmen several hours before Ruhi's arrival. He wanted to avoid all the noise and the circus field that part of his once peacefulmansion had turned into, thanks to her folks. He couldn't wait for everybody to leave and for his life to go back to being normal, with his dad minding his business, Alisha in a better mood, and his friends not asking any more stupid questions or coming up with newtheories. The only unwanted addition would be Ruhi, a pain in theass, whohe has to slowly push away. He didn't expect her to act any better than a ho
SEVEN YEARS LATER It was a quiet Sunday afternoon with some cooling summer showers pouringdown outside the window whileRafael spent a good amount of time in his study. He was lagging behind quite a bit because he spent all day at the water park yesterday and left work early even on Friday afternoon to attend his daughter's ballet performance. He got up from his seat and stretched before stepping out to see what Ruhi and his little Snookums were up to. Even though he wanted to finish all the piled up stuff, he had gone two hours without seeing them and it felt like too much on a Sunday. He walked down to the kitchen to see what all the excitement was about. Ruhi was watching something very seriously on her daughter'spink laptop while the little girl was busy whisking butter and molten chocolate. She got chocolate mousse on both her chubby cheeks while Ruhi got a good amount on her nose. "Papa! You were not supposed to come out until w
Rafael had always imagined death to start with some blinding light where all the best moments of his life wouldflash by him and then follow with an abyss of darkness. At least that's what he heard people say it would be like. The gunshots were still ringing in his ears long after the darkness, but the blinding light never came. The pain and the hopelessness sure felt like death.Among the many regrets he had, he regretted not being able to say a proper goodbye. Ruhi had never believed how unconditionally he loved her. He knew he did a poor job showing his feelings toher, except that he could prove that he would die for her, willing to do so over and over.He wanted to hear Ruhi's voice one last time before falling unconscious. His body was going numb, but a shooting painunfurled in the deepest pit of his stomach when he thought about the image of Ruhi lying on the floor. Was she conscious? He couldn't remember. Everything happened too quic
"Oh, I seriously loved what you fed me. I don't know what this is.""Well, let me fix something light so that you don't go hungry. The doctor will be on his way if you throw up again." His voice trailed off as he walked back into the kitchen.Pushing the stray locks of her hair out of her sweaty forehead, she looked at the time on her phone and groaned, her head still slightly spinning. She slept for almost ten hours last night after getting rid of her dinner and felt exhausted at barely ninein the morning.Rafael stepped into the bedroom with a bowl full of chicken soup forty minutes later, and she was in for another surprise. She wished she knew how to cook a soup withthat perfect consistency and flavor he achieved seemingly effortlessly. Watching the heavy raindrops hit the window panes persistently, she stared out at the dark sky while sipping on the warm liquid."Huh, so no sightseeing today?" She asked Rafael, who was looking at her with
No matter how much Rafael hated to move to a different room, Ruhi was super adamant, and hehad no other option but to leave the room. He hoped the next morning to be better and planned a day full of fun things to do. He missed the good old times where all she wanted was to eat a good meal with him at a restaurant and make him watch some kids' movies. She answered his call after deliberately missing it the first two times. He assumed she was sleeping. Sleep was the last thing on her mind. Without him by her side, she tossed and turned until the stormy predawn sky gave way to some daylight outside the huge glass windows."Wake up, sleepyhead. We have reservations for breakfast at a lakeside cafe here.""What makes you think I'm still in my bed. I ate breakfast already."Rafael's face fell when he heard that. It was barely 9 AM and Ruhi was still in bed on weekends, so he didn't expect her to be out already when on vacation."Where are you
"Do I really want to talk to her? I don't think so." Ruhi crumpled the paper with Adira's number on it."Well, we can't trust anything she says, but I think we should hear her out. Also, I need to track her location. So just talk to her for a few minutes and---""I don't want to help you kill her, Rafael."Rafael entered the number into Ruhi's phone and made the call before turning the speaker on."Ruhi... I-I'm sorry. Please, please, help me. There are some half a dozen men with guns chasing me. I feel scared. Ruhi? Are you there?""How could you lie to Gus about something like that? Don't you know he still hasn't moved on?" Ruhi asked reluctantly, confused about how she felt when talking to her sister. She never wanted to talk to her again after finding outshe wanted Gus to kill her."It was... Um, it was Alisha's idea. I just told her Raina had a sister. She came up with this idea to make a deal with him
It took a lot of courage for Ruhi to utter those four words, knowing full well Rafael wasn't going to let her go that easily. If he was a person to reason with and walk away with mutual understanding, she would have never tried so hard to run away from him. As she expected, his eyes flared, smoldering with what seemed to be fury, and his body grew rigidabove her, taut with tension."What?"He rolled onto his side and forced her to meet his gaze."You heardme. I can't live like this anymore. I want out, and I mean it."He flinched slightly at the steely resolution in her eyes. His gaze was feverishly raking her up and down, with disbelief clearly written all over his face. She was equally baffled that he hadn't seen this coming. She wondered if he was being deliberately dense."Ruhi, I know you didn't deserve the treatment you got from me." He stroked her cheek back and forth with hislong thumb. "It's not fair that I make a mistake
"A honeymoon..."Ruhi quietly pushed Rafael's hand away and put her seatbelt on. He expected her to put up a fight orrun out of the car and was shocked to see her stare out of the window in resignation.Zack approached the car but was blocked by Harry. He handed Ruhi's cellphone, laptop, and money back to Harry. Rafael told him to hold on to them as he believed Ruhi wouldn't run without those things. He also wanted to make sure she didn't call her sister and ask her to run instead."Drive!" She told him in an impatient voice when he stalled inside the car, checking his work emails quickly."Ruhi, I don't mean to force you into---""What part of my intentions isnot clear to you? Doyou really think I'd run away from you to show you I want to go on a honeymoon? What kind of logic is that?"Rafael opened his mouth to defend himself but closed it when he saw the look on her face. She was royally pissed, unlike all those ot
"Are you serious?" Ruhi couldn't believe her ears.He ignored her and focused on his phone when Zack texted and then called him."No, no weapons and none of his men. He can go back if he doesn't agree."She waited for him to finish talking on the phone while peeking into the coffee mug he left on the table."Was that dark rum or black coffee? Didyou really mean it when you said I can go?""Pack your stuff before I change my mind."She darted upthe stairs but stopped when she heard Zack enter the house with a pissed off face and announce something to Gus. When did he ever look happy? She wondered and turned back to the room but stopped dead in her tracks when she thought she heard Rafael's name.Climbing back down the spiral staircase, she walked towards the door to listen to their conversation."Just one then. Check thoroughly.""Check who?" She asked Gus, who ignored her again and went to grab some stu
"Gus, she's gone." Ruhi held her breath when she heard Zack's infuriated voice. She was surprised to hear him address his boss by his name.Gus closed the bathroom door and walked over to the bed. Unlike Zack who wanted to kill Ruhi if he saw her again, Gus was relatively calm as he picked his cellphone up from the bed. Checking his messages on the locked screen and dismissing them, he opened the 'Tracker'."I'll get Nash to check the surveillance camera. She may still be on the premises if---""She's right here." Gus cut him off whileRuhi's heartbeat skyrocketed. "You can get back to work. I'll take care of this."Leaning down a bit, he grabbed Ruhi's wrist firmly and pulled her out from under the bed. She didn't dare to meet hiseyesand stared at the door Zack exited from.Gus moved a strand of her hair from her cheek while she froze.'Crap, crap, crap! He's probably twenty years older than me and wants to either kill me k
